I'd love to know what you think about this, the CW's fall schedule and, of course, most of all, what you think will happen to Walker. Thank you. deadline*com/2024/05/the-cw-renewal-decision-all-american-walker-1235918928/
Link. More of the same thing. Again, the negotiation is over license fees and streaming profits. CW wants to keep the license fee low because they will have to pick up all of Walker's budget in season 5. Now CW admits they want cuts of the streaming licensing profits outside of CW app and website. Remember that Hollywood Report's article when Nexstar was buying majority share of CW, “content produced for [CW] is a valuable asset for other platforms at the parent companies”. CBS is reaping profits from distribution license fee to foreign markets and to Max, profits that CW won't see. CW's goal is to become profitable in the foreseeable future with their own streaming distribution deals.
The article confirmed what I was before that Netflix paying license fee for All American makes it easier for WB to accept the low license fee by CW.

I know we haven’t seen much of dune marketing as it’s just starting but do you think the budget is at least half of Barbie’s?
I think that the marketing budget for Dune Part Two will be $100Ms+ and Barbie’s marketing budget was estimated at $150Ms so yes.
$150Ms was how much WB spent for Barbie’s marketing (allegedly) but the impact made it look like they spent $300Ms+ and that’s because of:
- Strategic partnerships
- Organic (not paid) social media engagement because influencers/brands wanted to be a part of the Barbie/Barbenheimer conversation because of how massive it became
I think Dune Part 2 marketing budget clears $100Ms because (I said those things before)
1) It’s one of WB’s biggest release of 2024 and it’s not as crowded as it would usually be so they can get a great ROI
2) Capitalize on the All-star cast
3) They are planning for a sequel and series spin-off so they need it to be a successful franchise to justify these things.

I've heard that Disney+ will be removing some of it's content. Do you think there is any danger they will remove So Weird, or other disney channel shows or movies? I really hope not. The disney channel stuff was a huge part of the reason I got disney plus, since I probably own most of the theatrical movies anyway, so I don't need disney+ for that.
(For anyone who hasn’t heard the news, Disney plans to decrease what it creates for Disney Plus in the next two years AND remove content that doesn’t get a lot of views in order to save money. Think of what happened with Warner Bros./Discovery/HBO Max last year.)
I think there’s a 60-40 chance right now that So Weird could be removed. The DCOMs are probably safe though.
Disney Channel celebrated its 40th anniversary a few weeks ago and one of the PR tactics was to have ESPN ask a question about DCOMs and then have their other Disney-owned properties answer. I don’t believe they would have bothered doing that if they had it in mind to cut them out.
Tumblr media
Also, Disney wants to cut royalties and music licensing fees. They’ve already gone through the trouble of replacing songs in their DCOMs (Bewitched in Rip Girls, Youngstown in Genius, etc.) and in the case of The Other Me where *NSYNC was replaced at launch now the movie is gone entirely.
So Weird’s original music belongs to Disney BUT it was only the second season - with SheDaisy and The Moffats - that went missing back in 2019. Those songs are "live" performances cut between scenes so the rights would have to be paid.
Tumblr media
Other than EvD, who is mostly remembered but still out of the spotlight, there aren’t any “notable” stars. (No offense to Dionne and Mackenzie but it's safe to say Disney isn't keeping the roofs over their heads.) And despite the similarities and connections to Sulphur Springs, Halloweentown, Parallels, etc. the show is rarely included as recommendations along with them.
Tumblr media
Note how Double Teamed - with EvD and Levis costar Mack - isn't even first.
What might help is that the residual checks are small (i.e. budget friendly) and with the upcoming Goosebumps series, having So Weird as an original, dark 90s throwback could be useful if Disney wants to maintain some sense of history in their quasi-rebranding to “expand their audiences”.
Plus (no pun intended)
they did include it in their original launch lineup to begin with
we hear often from people who say they watch it frequently
so while little watched it is consistently so
season two did return shortly after
and it's been left alone since
to the point where our livestreams marathons haven't been hit with copyright takedowns
I imagine the highest payouts go to Henry Winkler for being an EP, but what monster would keep a check from that guy?
Then again, we've spent more time watching So Weird OFF Disney-owned platforms than we have with the last three years on one. And if WB can scrap a $90 million dollar movie now would be a great time for Disney to erase any memory pre-2001 in favor of "general entertainment".
As for other Disney channel shows, it might be a case by case basis. There's also the possibility of a "Disney" show moving to Hulu or vice versa until the merger is done. And that won't be until after January 2024. The news only broke this week.
Thanks for the question.

I'm squinting a bit at the ad world right now regarding Walker. I already mentioned Jared's signaling leaning towards retirement dirges for entertainers, but in particular, Windy's showrunner being like, yeah, we aren't hoping for much, is really telling me that my instincts were right, and the bulk of Walkerverse marketing was a moment of it actually bulking out a mix of retirement fallback and attempts to convince both the public and the network to keep either or both shows, which leaves me staring into Walker squinting. They're technically free to shop it around but would CBS really fund it alone on Paramount without the writeoffs and other licensing stunts?
WB is talking about moving most properties over to Max starting like 2024, so things will start filing in early 2025. And that isn't near as far away as it sounds (this fall will be the Fall 2023-Spring 2024 season). For example, S&L is going to be tested for its run here, then Nexstar will decide on it. If Nexstar passes, WB is ready to bring it to Max, because CW's current lifespan is really about propping it up sustainably long enough for, well, streaming itself to be sustainable.
Meaning another reason everyone's on bated breath is they do not know about things like on-channel renewals. For example, Windy can try to still convince Paramount, if they don't look too desperate. It would take Zero to convince Max to fund TW with its numbers for the fractional cost compared to competitors, so again, if Nexstar lost its mind, it can just go home where it tops the charts for pennies, WB is just using Nexstar to mitigate costs as long as possible while Max tries to hit its 2025-2026 year globalization plan.
But I just am not reading. Great signs for Jared in that marketing boom. If AA as a top provider can struggle to negotiate budget and finances with co-production, singular productions like Walker aren't in great stable waters to begin with before production delays, Nexstar's noose and whatever else. Because who wants to even pick it up afterward?
Like will this young show from an underwhelming franchise with proven meh digital traction REALLY bring more subscribers to paramount to pay for itself?

Superman and Lois officially ending with season 4 in 2024
Tumblr media
The CW's DC TV era will officially come to an end in 2024 as Superman & Lois season 4 has been confirmed to be the final season of the DC TV drama.
The DC era on The CW is coming to a proper end as Superman & Lois season 4 will be the last for the superhero drama. 2022 and 2023 were an emotional rollercoaster for Greg Berlanti's Arrowverse franchise as several shows got canceled in light of new ownership, while The Flash season 9 brought the series to a natural conclusion earlier this year. Following the Superman & Lois season 3 finale, the series will be the only DC TV show on The CW in 2024.
However, 2024 will be a bittersweet year for long-time viewers who have been following the Arrowverse and other DC TV shows on The CW since 2012. Superman & Lois season 4 will be the last for the series, as The CW announced to the press they are finishing the beloved DC TV show. Executive producers and co-showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher shared the following statement about the Lane-Kent family drama's conclusion:
While we’re sad to say goodbye to SUPERMAN & LOIS at the end of Season Four, we’re grateful for the time we’ve had with our amazing cast, crew, vfx teams, editors, musical geniuses, and writers. Since the day this show was first discussed, it was about family. And that’s what was created—on and off screen. We’d like to thank our partners at Berlanti Productions, DC, WB and The CW for their endless support and enthusiasm during this journey…and give a very special thank you to all the fans for tuning in. We’re thrilled about what we have in store in our final season, and can’t wait for everyone to watch as Superman, Lois and all our heroes face off against the biggest threat in the show’s history—Lex Luthor.
Why Superman and Lois is ending with season 4?
As disappointing as the news is, Superman & Lois season 4 being the final year for the show was likely always going to be the outcome. The CW's new owners, Nexstar, are targeting different demographics, and they are moving mostly away from original programming while airing acquired shows. The fact that Superman & Lois got renewed for another season is, without a doubt, a miracle, due to its massive budget costs.
In order for Superman & Lois season 4 to become a reality, Warner Bros. TV and The CW had to trim the cast and let go of seven series regulars. Even though some of them may be back in a few episodes here and there, Superman & Lois season 4 will only have ten episodes, making it the shortest season in the show's entire run. The only main cast members right now are Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Alex Garfin, and Michael Bishop, with Michael Cudlitz's Lex Luthor being the only new addition as a full-time regular.
Superman & Lois season 4 ending The CW's DC TV era is also coming as James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe is getting ready to start, with Superman: Legacy arriving in 2025. While details are being kept under wraps, it will be interesting to see what type of threat Lex will pose in Superman & Lois season 4 as the final big bad. Hopefully, once the SAG-AFTRA strike is over, Superman & Lois season 4 can finally start production on its last ten episodes.

Aggregation of What is Known, Rumored and Speculated About the New Godzilla Series
(Feel free to offer corrections, changes or updates)
Most official information comes so far from the Apple TV+ Press synopsis and Deadline articles.
Tumblr media
They state the series takes place following Godzilla 2014 before KoTM when Godzilla has largely gone back into hiding, minus the battle with Muto Prime in the Dominion comics. Nothing confirms the time period for the majority of episodes though, just that it begins after the events of Godzilla 2014.
Many expect it to focus on the human characters and drama aspects, and have a tone more like Godzilla 2014. May involve a lot of retconing.
Will likely show some of the other Titans previously mentioned or glimpsed in the Monsterverse so far.
Chris Black is making it alongside Matt Fraction, Safehouse Pictures' Joby Harold and Tony Tunnell. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita will execute produce for Toho.
Chris Black: Star Trek Enterprise, Madmen and Desperate Housewives.
Matt Fraction: Marvel Comics comic book writer. Wrote successful Hawkeye comic series which was adapted to a tepidly recieved TV show.
Hiro Matsuoka: Worked on Godzilla KotM.
Takemasu Arita: help maintain Godzilla character consistency.
Toho has licensed the rights for Godzilla to Legendary for this series.
The Godzilla series will be a separate series from the Netflix Monarch series.
Netflix Skull Island Netflix animated series comes out this year.
Toho plans to release a new Godzilla film before giving Legendary releases another. The new series does not halt the Toho film production.
Toho and Legendary have a friendly relationship.
Monsterverse has already begun building a large mythos and amount of lore.
Will likely release 2023 or 2024 (but possibly as late as 2025) along with the new Toho Godzilla film around similar time.
Tumblr media
Reasons for Legendary choosing Apple TV+:
Apple TV+ is available internationally. HBO Max is not internationally available. Currently $5 a month. Some scifi effects series on the service includes Wheel of Time.
Dangerville: Thinks Apple will provide a large budget.
Omni Viewer: Thinks WB and AT&T merger might be related to Legendary not going with HBO Max. Agrees that HBO Max isn't as accessible since it isn't international. Toho might want it to be internationally accessible. HBO Max might not be long-lived and successful.
Deadline: Apple TV+ was chosen because it offered the best financial incentive.
Aggregation of notable commentary:
Kaijuologist: The series may have some similarities to the show Surface with the focus on the human characters and using its limited giant monster scenes effectively.
D Man1954: Will probably just be Godzilla and Mutos. Most episodes probably won't show monsters, saving them mostly for the premiere and finale. Could bring about outsiders digging into the conspiracies and shadowy organization known as Monarch before the public was really aware of the organization.
D Man1954 doesn't think it will have a large budget. Thinks Apple may provide a lower budget than other streaming services. That it went to Apple because of the quarrel between Legendary and Warner Bros/HBO over GvK being released on streaming rather than exclusive to theatrical release. [Which PingPongFlix agrees] He thinks the show may return Muto Prime and some of the comic material. Doubts Toho will put out another G film before Legendary. Monsterverse is Legendary's big franchise right now. They are all in for Monsterverse, especially after the success of Godzilla vs Kong. Films will probably still be Legendary with WB distribution and eventually going on HBO Max, but the shows will be spread out among various streaming services so Legendary can make more from it.
Omni Viewer: Series will likely not feature other major Toho kaiju it might want to premiere in films, but may have some D-listers like Gezora or Varan.
Dangerville: Could possibly visit Skull Island, but not likely since there's already a series set there. Maybe a few scenes there, but probably not a major location for the show.
MurphysMultiverse claims the show is being tentatively called Hourglass.

on a scale of 1 to barbie how much do you think wb will invest in marketing dune
Reasons why they should go crazy:
1) The first one was successful especially when you factor in when/how it was released
2) They have an all-star cast including a few that many call the “future of Hollywood”
3) They are building a franchise with Messiah in the works and whatever they got going on with the TV show on HBO
4) The whole point of postponing it was to make sure that their cast could go all in on promo.
5) It’s arguably their biggest release of 2024. Their marketing budget needs to go somewhere.
Reasons why they might drop the ball:
1) Greed
It won’t be anywhere near Barbie’s rollout (for many reasons) but 1/3 of that budget would be great.
