After having located the 290 entrance to the Violet Crown Trail, I was eager to give it a shot and explore as much of it that I could. I parked in the Spec’s Parking Lot making sure not to park too close to the store so as not to impact the shoppers or the store’s business. After the usual preparation work of boots, harness, backpack and cameras, I was ready to go. A short walk from the parking lot brought me to the very nice entrance to the trail. A couple of bike’s came through and as I always do, I moved to one side to allow them to pass. Heck, I am so slow that I am constantly moving to one side to let others through.
Tumblr media
There are a couple of signs at the very beginning of the trail which warn people that the trail is sometimes very steep and is also very rocky in many places and to, “Take every precaution” whatever that means. True to the signs, especially on the way down the very first hill, the trail is very rocky and uneven coupled with the steepness so one has to be a little careful. In many places, the trail is nice easy walking and much of it is in the shade. The trail follows Gaines Creek pretty much all of the way to where it connects to Barton Creek and there are several low water crossings on the way. This time of the year is not a problem as most of the Creeks have long dried up awaiting the next rainy season but I imagine, during the wet season, the trail is prone to being closed after heavy rains. Not being the case today, I crossed Gaines Creek at least four times.
I headed in about 2 miles to where the cliff face trails are very interesting to walk. The trail is narrow and the cliffs overhang on one side and Barton Creek is on the other. I decided that I would turn around at this point and make my way back. This is just past the turn off for the existing greenbelt Trailhead at 360. I would like to hike all of the way to the Zilker Park Trailhead but would need a friend with a car to meet me there otherwise it would be a 10 mile round trip. Not sure I can do that anymore especially on a rough trail.
There were a few flowers but so much of the trail is in the shade, not too many are growing.
The return trip was uneventful as I made my way back to the 290 Trailhead. Several cyclists passed me in both directions and there were even a couple of runners and hikers who were also using the trail. It is probably a lot busier on the weekends. I found the trails to be a little tiring. It was probably a combination of the rocks underfoot and the changes and steepness of the terrain but I was glad to get back to my car. Altogether I covered 4.5 miles.
The first slideshow is of the trails which are pretty varied.

This slideshow shows the rock face on one side of the trail and the creek on the other. In many places, the rocks overhang the trails. I wonder what the chances are of any of them coming down….

Travel Tips to Plan Your First Bike Tour in the ATX
Cycling tours are the most environmentally friendly and healthy way to explore Austin, Texas. They also get you closer to the most interesting places and enable you to pass through stunning landscapes at the best pace to admire their beauty.
However, if you’re planning your first bike tour in Texas, there are some things you need to consider. Here are 5 tips to help you plan your first bike tour in the ATX:
Build up to your vacation
You know the expression “It’s like riding a bike?” Yes, of course you remember the way you used to ride your bike back in middle school. However, you’re no longer a kid, and you no longer cycle every evening after school or all weekend. The chances are your body isn’t ready for a long cycling tour.
If you’re only planning on cycling 5 to 10 miles a day at a slow pace, this probably won’t be a problem. Just take your time on the tour. But if you want to enjoy all the longer trails through the Barton Creek Greenbelt, you need to be better prepared.
If you haven’t ridden for 10 years, don’t just turn up to Austin and expect to be capable of cycling 50 miles per day for a whole week. Drag your old bicycle from out the garage and practice. Cycle a little bit each day and slowly build up your stamina. Once you’re strong enough, go for longer rides on Saturdays or Sundays.
Research the best places to cycle around Austin
The area within and surrounding Austin boasts many fantastic bike trails and city sites. For example, the Barton Creek Greenbelt contains 6 popular trails. These range in levels of difficulty and length.
The 10.4 miles long Lady Bird Lake Trail includes ascents and descents that total 266 feet. However, the slopes are gradual and the trail relatively easy. The 5.5-miles-long Violet Crown Trail is shorter and includes an ascent of 151 feet but a descent of 394 feet. It is a more challenging trail than the Lady Bird Lake Trail, with rock ledges, rock gardens, and roots.
If you plan to hire your cycling equipment in Austin, you should research the reputable hire companies before setting off on your vacation. Ensure you hire the right bike for the terrain you intend to cover. And if you’re planning on a more relaxed cycling tour where you join expert-guided tours around the city’s attractions, research the top-rated cycle tour companies in Austin, such as Austin Bike Tours & Rentals.
Be realistic
If you’re used to traveling by car, this will shape your perspective. When you examine the map of Austin and its surroundings, you’ll picture the journey from the city center to McKinney Falls State Park as an easy drive that takes just 16 minutes. By cycle, it will take closer to an hour. Longer if you’re unaccustomed to cycling.
Also, you don’t get as tired while driving as you do while cycling. Your thigh muscles won’t ache after driving for 8 hours. If you’re unaccustomed to regular cycling, factor in a lot of breaks and fewer miles per day.
You should allow extra time in your planned route schedule. Think about breaks for drinks and snacks. Allow plenty of time for visiting the attractions along the way. And allow time for unexpected emergencies, such as punctures and mechanical problems.
Ensure you’re carrying what you need for touring Austin
To rent equipment, such as bikes and helmets, you’ll need a credit card and valid ID in the same name. It’s sunny in Austin, so bring sunblock and carry bottled water to stay hydrated. For casual cycling, wear closed-toed shoes and comfy clothing. If you’re planning longer tours through the countryside, then consider investing in specially made cycling shorts and a bike jersey.
Because you might need to pay for food or drinks, carry sufficient cash. And if you plan to play in the water during any of your adventures, ensure your backpack contains a towel and water shoes. If you don’t like wearing a backpack while cycling, hire a pannier (saddlebag) for your bike.
Stay safe. You’ll need lights for riding at night, a helmet to protect your head, and a lock so you can enjoy attractions without worrying over your bike.
Be extra prepared if you’re headed out alone
If you plan to cycle along remote trails, ensure you carry basic spares and tools. Replacement inner-tubes and the cycle manufacturer’s recommended multi-tool are essential. Spare spokes and brake pads might come in useful over difficult terrain.
And don’t forget your “red-neck tool kit”.  A good quality, waterproof duct tape can come in useful for temporary fixes of many problems, like loose mudguards. And if you get into difficulty completing a repair, don’t be ashamed to ask for help from other passing cyclists. She who never made a mistake never made anything.

Things to do in Austin, Texas, all year round
(CNN)Even if you’re not visiting during the madness of South by Southwest, visitors can clearly see that Texas’s ever-changing capital city thrives on new sights, sounds, and eats.
New stays
In South Austin, Hotelier Liz Lambert (of the Hotel San Jose and Hotel Saint Cecilia) continues to push (and preserve) mid-century Texas chic with the Austin Motel.
In Lambert’s remodel of the circa-1938 motel, each of the 41 rooms gets cleaned-up, retro touches like vintage desks and old-school telephones; the neon sign and kidney-shaped pool remain.
Just up the street and slightly upmarket is the recently opened South Congress Hotel.
The modern, 83-room building features an ideal location on the busy strip it’s named for, and is steps from local-approved but tourist-friendly locations like Allens Boots and the Continental Club. If you overindulge, brunch at the hotel’s Caf No Se might be the perfect prescription.
Cross the South Congress bridge — the “bat bridge” — and you’re close to another of Austin’s newest stays, the Hotel Van Zandt.
The 319-room property opened in 2016 and pairs corporate polish (it’s a Kimpton) with rustic dcor and live music (the on-site restaurant Geraldine’s hosts acts every day of the year.) Venture outside and there are plenty more live acts and libations on Rainey Street.
New eats
June’s All Day is the latest from local food-and-drink impresario Larry McGuire of the fancy BBQ joint Lambert’s.
It’s a casual bistro where you can feast on a burger while watching people roll down South Congress in freshly bought Stetsons.
Everyone’s got a favorite ‘cue spot. Our suggestion: try a bunch ’til you’re all smoked out.
One recent, undisputed great for your short list: La Barbecue where the brisket will fall apart on your plastic fork.
The East Austin food truck is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. — or when they’re sold out. Pre-order online or prepare for a line.
On the lighter side, there’s Launderette, a James Beard semifinalist featuring modern takes on southern and Mediterranean cuisine, all served family-style.
New drinks
An old print shop in South Austin is the new home of the 150-year-old carved mahogany bar from the Cedar Tavern in New York, which closed in 2006.
Bakery during the day, beer garden at night, Easy Tiger is a casual hang spot no matter the time.
Early in the day, go for a locally roasted coffee and a Tiger Claw — a riff on a bear claw pastry, with a spiced pecan filling.
Another option, if you have time: Take a short drive to Jester King Brewery. It’s a destination for beer geeks searching out some of the country’s finest farmhouse ales, set on a rambling, 200-acre ranch.
Getting outside
To burn off the inevitable booze and BBQ calories, hit the Violet Crown Trail, whose path runs from Zilker Park (and the must-visit Barton Springs Pool) through the Barton Creek Greenbelt, a canyon forest studded with swimming holes and sport climbing routes.
And for an outdoor pursuit that’s a little more unexpected, there’s surfing. Yes, really.
NLand Surf Park offers legit waves — from steep, over six-foot-high reef waves to gentler stuff, in a 14-acre manmade lagoon.
The park opened in October, then closed for repairs less than a month later; it’s set to reopen this spring.
One-hour passes are pricey ($60-$90), but unlike the ocean, every wave is predictable, and catchable — so after an hour, you’re torched.
Live music
As the self-proclaimed Live Music Capital of the World, Austin has plenty of places to hear world-famous acts.
The latest: 3TEN ACL Live, a cozy, 350-capacity space located in the basement of its big brother venue, ACL Live at the Moody Theater.
Despite its modest size, the acoustically focused room boasts a stellar sound system befitting artists like Son Volt, who performed there unannounced in 2016.
To see a modern take on the honky tonk, drop in to The White Horse where two-stepping by those of all skill levels takes place in front of a low stage.
