De fontein aan het Hofplein, met op de achtergrond het stadhuis, in 1955.
Het Hofplein is een (verkeers-)plein in Rotterdam. Het plein is gelegen op de kruising van het Weena, de Schiekade en de Coolsingel.
Het Hofplein werd aangelegd op de plaats van de vroegere Hofpoort en lag oorspronkelijk iets meer naar het noordoosten. Na het Bombardement op Rotterdam in 1940 is het plein echter op een nieuwe plaats aangelegd, om beter aan te sluiten bij het stratenpatroon. Hierdoor is wel het station Rotterdam Hofplein verder van het plein komen te liggen. Aan het Hofplein stond tot 1939 de Delftsche Poort.
Het is een verkeersplein uitgevoerd als een rotonde met verkeerslichten. In het midden van het plein bevindt zich een grote fontein. Het beeldhouwwerk van de fontein is van Cor van Kralingen.
In het gras rond de fontein liggen de sporen van de Rotterdamse tram. Er is intensief tramverkeer over het plein (bijna alle tramlijnen rijden via het Hofplein), waardoor de wachttijden voor het autoverkeer bij de lichten kunnen oplopen tot meerdere minuten. De trams kunnen zowel rechts- als linksom over het plein rijden, waardoor het mogelijk is rechtstreeks linksaf te slaan.

Michel Piccoli, de man die moest roken
Ook door geconsuminder in de samenleving denk ik veel aan La Grande Bouffe. In die schandaalfilm van Marco Ferreri heeft de Franse acteur Michel Piccoli een glansrol. Met drie vrienden eet en drinkt hij zich dood, misschien bij wijze van aanklacht tegen de consumptiemaatschappij, maar dat weet ik niet meer zeker. La Grande Bouffe ging in 1973 in première, dus het zou kunnen.
De film werd een heel schandaal op het filmfestival van Cannes. Volkskrantrecensent Peter van Bueren omschreef de première als volgt: “De onrust in de zaal nam per minuut toe en een hels gefluit begeleidde de slotbeelden. Met gebalde vuisten en zich ternauwernood beheersend omdat het avondkostuum een ordinaire vechtpartij verhinderde, trokken de geteisterde bezoekers in een walm van woede naar een terras.”
Ik herinner me Michel Piccolo vooral als een acteur die overtuigend een sigaret kon roken, bijvoorbeeld achter het stuur van een Citroen DS. Ernstiger was dat hij zijn vriend Arno Hintjes een rol aansmeerde in een van de eerste films die hij zelf regisseerde: Alers voilà (1997). Michel Piccoli overleed twee jaar geleden.

Today we have youth engaged and ready to fight. But many struggle with misinformation from adults, a lack of awareness of their rights, and a lack of knowledge of how to use the specifics of their rights, applying them to the country and circumstances in which they live. We need to give them the tools to strengthen their fight and empower them. Amnesty, Geraldine and I hope to get these books into the hands of young people, and for them to be a guide that they can carry with them and use. Not just to inform them, but to activate them and serve as a source of reference where needed.
