Zawe Ashton reveals she got into the 'best shape' of her life in The Marvels but had to reshoot the film after becoming pregnant
Tumblr media
Zawe Ashton has revealed she got into 'the best shape' of her life while filming The Marvels but ended up having to reshoot the film after becoming pregnant.
The actress, 39, portrays the warrior Dar-Benn in the film opposite stars, Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani.
Zawe, who admitted to being 'traumatized' from working in Hollywood, felt the grueling training regime required for the blockbuster 'empowered' her.
Speaking at the Bazaar At Work Summitt 2023, she said: 'There was this opportunity for me to get in the best shape in my life [with The Marvels] which I really hadn't been in – getting fit and in shape, but strong and eating well, was a massive part of this journey for me.
'And then the process of learning stunts and fighting is probably one of the most empowering things that I've ever done.'
Zawe welcomed her first child with her partner Tom Hiddleston last October, with the pregnancy interfering with the shoot.
She said: 'I thought the film was finished, and I got pregnant and had my baby. And then they told me to come back and reshoot basically the whole movie.
'That, to me, has been the biggest journey with this movie: my physical wellness, my ability to endure, to mentally switch back into that place, postpartum, and come back, and try and kick some ass again. That's really what the landmark of the film is to me now.'
Zawe also spoke about working in the film industry as a young actress and how there were not many measures in place to protect performers from exploitation.
She said: 'I'm probably deeply traumatised! I was working at a point in our industry that is so different from industry that we are working on making for ourselves now. There were no safety protocols.
'There were no conscious ways that we were thinking about protecting young women. I sort of wipe my brow sometimes, thinking: 'Wow, I actually emerged quite unscathed.'
'There are so many different ways that we're thinking consciously about protecting the people who are working in front of and behind the camera now.'
Zawe elaborated on sexism in the industry, saying she felt 'fatigued' from spending so much time worried about her looks.
She said: 'I realised that I'd spent nearly 30 years as an actor, but I'd also sort of spent 30 years performing as a woman, and I felt suddenly so tired.'
'That kind of patriarchal eye, that just gazes on you since birth, it suddenly felt really like that had depleted me in a very deep way.'
'I was suddenly hit with this fatigue, where I didn't want to think about my face, or about my hair and my looks. I didn't want to think about how I could keep presenting myself for a camera or a lens that basically represents this very, very problematic gaze.'
'Where do we draw the line? This is all part of the same spectrum. If you're not seeing women's humanity, if you're not seeing a full human life when you're thinking about the ways that you're putting these kinds of [character breakdown] descriptions together, then the extreme end of the spectrum is you're not valuing women, and that's a much bigger conversation than my industry.'
The actress, who was born to a Ugandan mother and an English father, also spoke about representation on screen.
She said: 'When I starred in period drama, Mr. Malcom's List, there was suddenly this healing moment. I had never ever seen any actor who looked like me invited to the table to perform these entertainment pieces.
'I hadn't known necessarily that I was hurting so much, until I saw that representation happen, and the success of it take everyone by storm.'
'Growing up as a young biracial girl in Hackney, I was really drawn to the left-field, drawn to the alternative. And part of the bullying I encountered in my teens was because of that.
'There weren't really any people of colour who were representing this alternative landscape. When I got the part of Vod in Fresh Meat, I thought: 'This is now my opportunity to be that for someone else who didn't maybe have it.'
'I was willing to do whatever it took to make that character as edgy and authentic as I felt she could be, so that it would invite that person who is not seeing that kind of representation on screen, to really feel seen.'
Zawe, who has not revealed the name or sex of her child, told how she feels like she is 'growing up' with her baby.
She said: 'The most surprising thing for me has been how quiet I feel like I've gone in motherhood.'
'Right now, it's been really about collecting women's stories. For some reason, we don't value ageing in our society. And there are women who have given me nuggets of wisdom that I literally could not live without. And they are all over the age of 60.
'Why we're not opening a platform and listening to women who have actually lived life is crazy to me. I'm a new mum. I know so little. I'm growing with my child… the child is going to teach you and lead you if you're open to it, and that's the moment to enjoy so much.'

Nalongo Catherine Zawedde Muwanga, the wife of Uganda’s former Vice President and Prime Minister, Paulo Muwanga, has died. The details surrounding her death have not been made public.
Paulo Muwanga, a significant figure in Ugandan politics, served briefly as the de facto president of Uganda and later as its Prime Minister. He was known for his crucial role during a turbulent period in Uganda’s history, particularly around the time of the 1980 elections, which eventually led to the government under President Milton Obote.
Nalongo Zawedde Muwanga was celebrated for her support and resilience during her husband’s political career, often providing a stabilizing presence behind the scenes. Her legacy includes not only her political and social contributions to Uganda but also her role in nurturing future generations.
The couple’s family extends into the international spotlight with their granddaughter, Zawe Ashton, who is a well-known British actress. Ashton, recognized for her roles in various British television series and films, has often spoken about the influence of her grandparents on her life and career.
——
Condolences to Zawe and Tom, and the Ashton and extended Muwanga families.

SPANKING ON TV #3
Flirting (1991) d. John Duigan
Tumblr media
A six-stroke caning over pyjamas for Danny Embling by his Housemaster. At least one member of his dorm has already been dealt with; the rest are nervously lined-up outside the study. Later, the boys compare stripes after lights out. The film is set in Australia in 1965 and deals with the burgeoning romance between the socially-isolated Danny, who has a stutter, and Thandiwe Adjewa, a Ugandan-Kenyan-British girl he meets at a school rugby match. Between them they confront the authoritarian regime in their respective boarding schools.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The film is a coming-of-age melodrama and is a semi-autobiographical piece by the director. It’s the second in an intended trilogy that wasn’t completed. Noah Taylor who plays Danny also starred in the first film: The Year My Voice Broke (1987). It marks the film debut of Thandiwe Newton; Nicole Kidman is in it too, before Hollywood and mega-stardom.
The school is shown as a harsh, uncompromising place where the boys are caned regularly. They bully each other too, and Danny is frequently the butt of their jokes. Even his nickname mocks his stammer. His romance with Thandiwe is something of a revelation to them, then, especially when he sneaks her into the dorm and later hides her in the boys’ showers.
The Housemaster in particular is vindictive and sadistic. As well as the caning at the start of the film, he’s heard caning another boy during prep. It’s telling that he has to chalk his cane, which suggests he enjoys terrorising the boys and inflicting the pain of a caning but isn’t all that expert at it. He always gives out six of the best, too, which shows no discretion or understanding of justice.
The canings we see/hear are massively exaggerated, especially the audio. If a boy was beaten that severely in real life, I doubt he’d just get up and walk off with a nod to the next boy in line.
There is an ongoing joke of one boy, Green, saying or doing the wrong thing and being told to report to different teachers for a caning.
Despite being set in Australia in the 60s, the boys wear long grey trousers throughout, although some wear shorts for rugby and tennis.
Noah Taylor, Thandiwe Newton and Nicole Kidman are all still acting (fancy that). You might recognise Noah from Game of Thrones amongst other things. Thandiwe has won various awards, including a Best Supporting Actress BAFTA for Crash (2004) and an Emmy; she was made an OBE in 2019. Nicole, meanwhile, bagged a Best Actress Oscar and a BAFTA for The Hours (2003), and is also the recipient of two Golden Globes, an Emmy and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Noah was 21 when he filmed this. Australia ended corporal punishment in 1985, so it's not inconceivable that he was caned at school. I wonder if shooting these scenes brought back any memories?

is the issue with casting that they cast the gods as black, or that they cast them as non-greek? were the gods played by mixed race black&greek actors would that be fine ?
Hi! We are talking about US movies now and perhaps the Greek ones, yes? I don't speak for every single Greek here, I just say what I've seen in the reception of Greek audiences through the years.
In Greece, the "race" categorization is not a thing, so I'll speak with a bit different terms. As I always repeat, the desire of Greeks is to see the gods as their depictions have been, aka like Mediterraneans. That's it. The gods looking Irish or Norse pale is usually also frowned upon for the same reason. I think appearance is the first thing Greek audiences look for, and then there's the culture.
Now, if a Greek is not found in big productions but someone non-Greek who looks like the average Greek is cast, then there is no issue. Like, if the actor/actress in the USian movie is Syrian, Iraqi, Egyptian, Bulgarian, or Greek-Syrian, Greek-Egyptian etc, Greek audiences wouldn't care as long as the actors fit the depictions.
Same goes for Greek people/citizens. Like a short blond Greek wouldn't qualify for Hades in the Greek public's eyes, like me not qualifying to play Aphrodite (I am far from the ancient and modern beauty standards), similarly, a Taiwanese-Greek woman wouldn't qualify for Hestia and a Greek-Nigerian wouldn't qualify for Poseidon. Everyone's appearance matters for the cast, even if one comes from no other ethnicity except Greek, for the last 600 years. Are you a white dark (μελαχρινός, aka black-haired man capable of tanning) Greek in your fifties and want to play Apollo? Nope, that won't pass the appearance test, I am afraid.
Likewise, if my child was Greek-Taiwanese in Taiwan and looked entirely Mediterranean, I don't think they'd qualify to play a Taiwanese deity, for obvious appearance reasons. Alternatively, if I was in Uganda and my "mixed-race" Greek-Ugandan child looked the part, according to how the locals imagined their ancient gods, then they could be given the role. But if they looked a lot like me, they wouldn't be given the role. It's simple, right?
There might be exceptions, like, if a local community want to honor my child as an immigrant, and they see no issue in giving them the role. That's up to the locals to decide. If the movie is to be played for the whole country, I would like the majority country to agree with the casting choice. Similarly, for Greek immigrants in Greece who don't look like the depictions (there are many Greek immigrants, even from N. Africa and the Middle East, who do), most of the country must feel comfortable with changing a depiction of 3.000 years.
If the actor comes from the culture that's great, but appearance goes first, from what I know. I am not saying all discussions should seize on this matter, but I am writing the opinion of the majority of Greeks.
I'd like to note that not being able to play the gods of the nation you reside in, doesn't make you less of that ethnicity. (And that still qualifies you to play literally any Greek person in a series, except the historical ones who don't share your appearance). For example, there are Black people in Japan who were born there and know the culture in and out, and there is no reason to not see them as Japanese. At the same time, the Japanese don't cast them as figures that were never depicted as Black in their culture.
P.S. I'm not talking about the cases where people in a country that has no Mediterranean-like people want to make a production on Greek or any other mythology. Obviously, there the gods or foreign people will be played by the only people available around.

A Passing Resemblance
According to comments that arise occasionally, Zawe looks a little like a number of her colleagues. Perhaps seeing similarities involves a little squinting, or leaning on one leg and looking through interlaced fingers. It’s mostly in terms of basic characteristics like cheekbones. It’s like when Tom is compared to Michael Fassbender or when someone calls T&Z Harry and Meghan.

Roxy Sternberg is a British actress currently appearing in “FBI: Most Wanted.” Interestingly, she has a Ugandan mother and she was the star of a British cult favorite known as “It’s a Lot.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nathalie Emmanuel had a big role in “Game of Thrones.” Their eyebrow game is similar. Have seen a clip or two of hers mistakenly identified as Zawe’s.

Golda Rosheuvel has played Lady Macbeth as well as Queen Charlotte in “Bridgerton” and “Queen Charlotte.”

Elizabeth Bagaaya, Princess of Toro (Ugandan Kingdom).

In addition to being the first black woman to graduate from Cambridge and becoming the first woman lawyer of Uganda.
“I hoped to bring to the attention of the world my pride in my heritage, to emphasise my ancestral identity. ……. The language of clothes, of fashion and its attendant publicity is a significant one.
