“Where is everybody?” My roommate Johanna shouts into my earover the blasting techno music. “And, why is it so crowded in here?”

Capitol is our local bar and a walking distance from our condo.We’re often here on Friday nights to celebrate the end of our respective work shifts.Johanna is the CFO of a new startup in SOMA (South of Market) while I work for GuestServices at the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park.

As you can tell, our financial brackets are very different.

However, Johanna never blinked an eye when I showed up ather doorstep one year ago on a foggy Saturday morning in tears—and in mypajamas.

“Jesus Katniss…what are you wearing?” she asks as she helpsme out of my jacket.

I look down at my fitted black trousers and rust orange t-shirt.“It’s what I wore to work!”

Johanna sighs, her sharp eyes looking me over inexasperation.

“You look like your vagina is impenetrable.”

“I do not!” Yes, maybe the shirt could be a littlesexier…but I was just here for a beer. “And, what the hell am I supposed to doanyway? I’m not walking back home.”

“Must I do everything?”

She yanks me by the hand towards the back of the bar to the women’srestroom. Pushing through the door, we go to the full-length mirror in theback. Around us, women are going in and coming out of the stalls. Others areapplying makeup in front of the sink mirrors.

“Take off your bra,” Johanna suddenly says.

I cup my miniscule breasts protectively. “No!”

“You have very little tit and the bit you do have is coveredin this uniboob bra,” my friend responds. Without warning, she reaches under myshirt and unhooks it quickly. There’s a struggle and somehow, she triumphs inthe end as my cotton bra is suddenly in her hands. “Holy shit—what the hell isthis?”

“It’s a bra!”

“No, this is a joke.” Somewhere behind me, someone snorts ather words. “How the hell am I supposed to introduce you to anyone in this?”

Discarding my bra into a nearby trash bin, Johanna puts herhands on my shoulders.

“Don’t hide away. You’ve been mourning too long.”

With a weary sigh, I give in. “Alright, do what you have todo.”

Johanna smiles, giving me a quick hug before she pulls awayto examine me. “The shirt…” Her index finger goes to her chin. “I got it!” Shegathers the fabric so it’s tight against my body and then knots the excessfabric so my shirt is now cropped. Then she kneels to bring the hem of my pantsto my ankles. “Now what?”

“Her hair, honey.”

We look behind us to see a woman who has just finishedputting on her lipstick staring at us. She is all long legs, Ruby Woo red lips,and big hair.

“Undo the braid,” she suggests. “I’m a hair stylist—my salonis between Sutter and Post.” The woman gives us a pretty smile. “I’m Portia.”Reaching, she takes the elastic from the tip of my braid and unravels my darkhair. “Very nice…good texture…”

Portia makes quick work of my hair, smoothing it in one spotthen reaching into her bag for a comb to tease some other parst. When I’mfinished, I am looking at a stranger in the mirror with pretty face-framingwaves.

“Thanks Portia,” I tell her appreciatively. “It’s been along time since anyone has even noticed my hair.”

“She was in a bad spot last year,” Johanna tells her.“Boyfriend left her…for his assistant.”

“Well, you know what?” Portia smiles at me. “It’s hisloss…and I have a feeling tonight is going to be special.”

Johanna looks at the screen of her cell. “Running late? Dothey have no sense of time?”

I nurse my glass of whiskey against the bar. “Who?”

“Some family from Berkeley.” She quickly types back.“They’re running into traffic on the bridge.”

“Excuse me?” We turn to see a very good-looking hipster��hehas horn-rimmed glasses and very tight jeans—offering his hand to Johanna. “Doyou want to dance?”

She grins and looks to me in question.

I push her towards him. “Go on! I’ll be right here when youget back.”

“I won’t be long…”

However, by the look of lust in my friend’s eyes, I have afeeling that I’ll be needing to wear headphones when I get back home.

I don’t mind though.

Johanna has been really good to me. I met her during aninternship with her former company. We’re both Bay Area natives—a raritynow—and bonded over our love for sushi burritos and movie singalongs at theCastro Theater.

That was years ago.

Johanna has made strides in her career and can afford theastronomical San Francisco rent.

I’m just her thirty-year-old roommate who spends her days ina humid greenhouse telling people not to touch the flowers.

“I like your necklace.”

I follow the deep timbre and my eyes turn to the dirty-blond,blue-eyed man suddenly next to me. My gaze wanders from his gorgeous face, downhis fitted white tee displaying washboard abs, past the jeans—oh God, don’t look at his crotch—andfinally to the leather oxfords.

“What?” I manage to push out.

He reaches over to the pendant pressed against my shirt,fingering it gently. “Primrose.”

My mouth widens into a smile. “How did you know?”

“I worked as a gardener when I was in college,” he explains.The man smiles at me. “Why this flower?”

“My sister’s name,” I explain.

“That’s different,” the man replies and snorts. “My nameisn’t any better.” He holds his hand out. “I’m Peeta, by the way.”

I shake his hand, ignoring the warm current rushing throughmy skin. “Katniss.” I look around for Johanna, who has somehow disappeared withthe hipster. “What brings you here?”

“Meeting someone for a little reunion,” he tells me. “I’vebeen in London for two years.”

“London?” That bit of wanderlust grips me. I’ve never beenanywhere—too timid to leave my hometown. “And, what did you do there?”

“International relations, of sorts,” Peeta says. “I’m amusic producer and the artists that I’ve been working with were from the UK.”

I nod. “Impressive.”

Looking around, I spot Johanna in a far corner of the packedbar, her arms around Hipster Boy with his glasses perched atop her head.

Suddenly, the hairs on the back of my neck prickle and myeyes go to a couple just a few feet away from her.

The dark-haired man wears a fitted flannel shirt and I fist myhands remembering that I had picked out that very flannel shirt for him yearsago. Next to him in a black body-con dress that I would never wear and a body Iwould never ever have was the golden beauty he left me for.

Of all places, why did Gale have to be in this bar?

“Please don’t look this way,” I mutter under my breath.

There must be someone up there who hates me because I seehis perfectly-coiffed head begin to turn my way—

“Peeta, I know that this is completely out of left field,but my ex is here with the woman he left me for and I just can’t let him see me.So…if it’s not too weird…would you make out with me?”

Peeta chuckles softly—probably at my flaming-hot face—beforepulling me flush against his oh-so-tight body and cupping my cheek with hisfree hand.

“Remember, we’re madly in love, so it’s all right to kiss me—”His mouth presses fully onto mine and I taste whiskey—his or mine, I have noidea—against my tongue. He suddenly pulls away, his forehead against mine. “—anytimeyou feel like it.”

My mind is blank, still reliving the feel of his lips onmine and the taste of him. There’s a flux of heat rushing through my body andpooling in my center. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted anything—or anyone—morethan I want the stranger in front of me.

“Again,” I manage to breathe out.

Peeta smirks—and somehow, he’s gotten even hotter. “Is yourex still watching us?”

“Who?”

He’s totally mindfucked me.

“Nevermind.” We’re pressed between barstools and the frictionis killing me. Peeta deeps into my mouth for another kiss and I’m a goner. Myarms are around him, my nails gripping the back of his shirt as we grindagainst one another.

Someone behind me tells the bartender to hose us down.

However, it all becomes a haze when Peeta’s hand weavesthrough my hair to deepen our kiss.

“HEY!” We reluctantly rip our mouths apart to glare at thebartender. “I don’t care if you hump your brains out but if you’re going to doit here then you best buy a drink!” He waves his hand at the crowd. “There areother people willing to take your spots.”

I meet Peeta’s eyes. “My place is a few blocks away.”

“Really?” Peeta grins. “I do have to meet someone here—”

“Katniss!” Johanna is rushing towards me sans Hipster Boy.Her eyes go to Peeta and she squeals before pulling him into hug. “Peeta, youmade it!” She ruffles his hair affectionately. “It’s been too long!”

“Too damn long!” Peeta agrees. “Cinna is outside, probablyon his fifth cigarette.” He looks around. “I thought you were bringing yourroommate?”

Johanna looks to me. “She’s right here!”

Peeta meets my eyes and I can see he’s trying to keep ittogether.

“Remember I told you that my mom remarried when I was incollege?” Johanna explains. “Well, I got a little brother out of it.”

My mouth goes dry. “Little brother?”

From what I felt, there is nothing little about Peeta.

“Stepbrother, actually,” my friend says, oblivious to thefact that I can no longer feel my face. “This is him. Katniss, this is mybrother Peeta. Peeta, this is my roommate Katniss.”

Peeta raises a brow before holding out his hand for me toshake. “Nice to meet you.”

I take his hand, suppressing my need to bring it between mylegs. “Nice to meet you, too.”

“He’s going to be bunking on our couch,” Johanna informs me.“Until he finds a place of his own, of course.”

Peeta gives me a smirk, his blue eyes heated as he looks atme. “Hope it’s okay for me to stay over.”

Stay forever.

I meet his stare. “Of course. Let me know if you needanything.”

“I will,” he responds.

There’s a shout and Johanna is pulled away by a coworker whojust entered the bar.

Peeta leans over, his mouth to my ear. “After all—” He nipsmy ear and I clench…everywhere. “—you owe me.”

I know…totally open ended.

Secret proposals to ration care by age in pandemic branded ‘unacceptable’

Secret plans to withdraw hospital care from over-70s in the case of a catastrophic pandemic have been branded “totally unacceptable” by charities representing older people.

Confident documents produced following a pandemic planning exercise in 2016 proposed a “triaging” system to be put into operation if healthcare resources were exhausted, under which people in nursing homes could be offered “end of life pathways” instead of medical assistance.

The government said the proposals related to “hypothetical scenarios” and had never been adopted as official policy.

But Age UK charity director Caroline Abrahams told The Independent that Britain had come “perilously close” to an approach of this sort at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic last year.

And she said that the government and NHS should be clear that treatment decisions must always be based on clinical need.

The documents on “NHS surge and triage” and adult social care in the case of a pandemic, labelled “confidential” and “official sensitive”, were obtained by an NHS doctor under freedom of information legislation and published on Saturday by the Daily Telegraph.

Written in 2017 and 2018, they suggested that in the case of a serious flu outbreak which overwhelmed the NHS’s ability to respond, patients could be “triaged” – or prioritised for treatment – based on their “probability of survival” rather than “clinical need”.

In a severe pandemic, the health secretary could authorise medics to prioritise some patients over others and even stop providing critical care altogether, the documents suggested.

Ms Abrahams expressed deep concern that the approach had even been considered.

“Whatever the status of this planning document may be, we know from other reports that during the early part of this pandemic we got perilously close to triage approaches being introduced in hospitals that took age heavily into account,”she said.

“If they had been put into practice the result would have been that a relatively healthy 70-year-old would not have got access to the intensive treatment they needed – they would effectively have been written off.

“At that time there was huge uncertainty and fear, as doctors struggled to cope with a virus that was threatening to overwhelm the NHS.

“However, we said at the time and repeat now that there is no place for treatment decisions based on age in a civilised society. Whatever the pressures, these decisions should always be based on clinical need.

“To do otherwise is blatantly ageist and totally unacceptable.”

Prof Martin Green, chief executive of Care England, which represents independent providers of adult social care, told The Independent: “The NHS should not have blanket policies and every single person should be assessed on the basis of need.

“The NHS should be available to all citizens and any scenario planning for a pandemic should focus on the needs of citizens, not the needs of organisations.”

Dr Moosa Qureshi, who obtained the plans, said it was “unprofessional” that they were not given to medics.

“The Information Commissioner held that clinicians must be supported by a clear framework when allocating care during a severe pandemic, and that the framework needs public debate,” he said. “The NHS triage paper provides real guidance for front-line staff if NHS services are overwhelmed. Why did the Department of Health, NHS England and BMA keep it secret from healthcare professionals?”

An NHS spokesman said: “The NHS was asked to produce this discussion document based on a specific and extreme hypothetical scenario to inform the Government’s pandemic flu preparedness programme rather than for operational use and it did not form the basis of the NHS response to coronavirus.”

A government spokesman said the reports were “historical draft briefing papers that include hypothetical scenarios which do not and have never represented agreed government policy”.

It’s hard to put into words what our first week on trail has been like, but I’ll try.

Tiring. Hot. Cold. Amazing. Beautiful. Adventure. Ouch. Hungry. Thirsty. Dirty. Smelly.

There you have it!

Starting out the PCT was an emotional experience. It was surreal hiking those first few miles, and then it just sinks in “oh right, this is just hiking. And hiking is just walking. And walking is tiring. Wow it’s hot. Wait, how am I already this dirty?” We only made it about .3 miles when we came upon a little campground with some trail angels that we talked to briefly. One of them was an older man with long white silver hair and blue eyes named Legend who apparently is a triple crowner (has hiked the PCT, AT and CDT). He told us to put our hands towards the trail and then grab some air and cup it into a ball in our hands. He said we had grabbed a little piece of magic from the PCT and it is carried in all the hikers who had gone before us and that we were all connected. He told us to hold it up to our hearts to absorb, but being the brilliant nurse that I am, I held it to the right side of my chest instead of the left, so I guess that means the magic went into my rib cage instead. I’m not an expert in PCT magic 🤷🏻‍♀️ so who knows how it will affect me. Magic ribs? Time will tell. He also told us to take another piece of PCT magic and put it in our pocket to give to a friend. I will sell mine to the highest bidder. Authentic PCT magic, hard to come by, Bitcoin will be accepted as a trade.

Hiking has been very physically exhausting for me, more than I expected to be honest. We’re going about 2-2.3 miles per hour at this point, and have done 10-16 miles per day. We wake up between 6-7 AM, pack up our stuff and head out. Generally we eat breakfast at our first break of the day after 3-4 miles, and I’ve found that I need a break about every 3 miles. If we can get to a great spot for lunch, we will generally take at least an hour and sometimes more if it’s in the heat of the day. We try to stop hiking between 5-6 pm, so we can have time to set up camp, make dinner, roll out our feet and sore muscles, and write in our journals before bed. We are very tired every night, but sometimes we don’t sleep very well if it’s windy or very cold. I always take my trusty Benadryl and sleep better with it!

The hardest part for me so far has been the wear and tear on my feet. The biggest mistake I made at the start was not putting inserts in my shoes. My feet have been in a lot of pain and I’ve had to take more breaks to roll them out to continue hiking. No matter how tired I am, I have to roll out my feet at the end of the day or they fee pretty rough the next day. I’ve also been dealing with some blisters and some chafing, so basically everything hurts! Doing miles on miles every single day is a lot of work, and we are sore every day. Other hikers that we’ve met who have done other thru hikes assure us that we will get our trail legs (eventually) but it’s going to take about 3 weeks

Ok, enough complaining!! We have met some amazing people. Landon’s cousin Justin hiked out with us the first day and it was fun to give him a taste of the trail. There was a small group of people that we started with who have been a bit faster than us and are now ahead of us on the trail, but maybe we’ll run into them again!

We met a mother and son duo named Chris and Pat. Pat is a psychologist at a University and counsels students. She was the nicest friendliest little lady and I immediately liked her. Chris, her son, works in film media and is trying to become a landscape photographer. They were both lovely but Pat can't go very fast so I'm not sure we'll see them again, but we're following each other on Instagram now.

We’ve spent quite a bit of time with a small group of hikers, hiking and also hanging out with them in Julian (where we are taking our first zero day, no hiking and only lots of resting, eating and socializing). Half of them are not American which is exciting! Florian is from Germany and is a super interesting guy. He works for Google and has lived in Australia, the UK, and most recently in San Francisco. We talked about the differences between Germany and Europe, some about politics (how crazy American politics are compared to relatively boring German ones), gun control, Mental illness and lack of resources in America, our messed up healthcare system, the largeness of Australian huntsman spiders, and a whole bunch of other things. Lauren is from Canada and loves to quiz you about geography and ask fun questions. Today she asked "which animal most represents the place that you live?" Landon and I debated for a while and decided on a big horn sheep 🐑. She and Florian met on the JMT and are hiking together as friends as they both have significant others. She is always scavenging for everyone’s extra food and someone suggested that her trail name be Trash Panda (people give each other “trail names” on thru hikes, and then that’s how people introduce themselves. We haven’t gotten ours yet but it’s only a matter of time). I don’t think she accepted that trail name though 😂

 Another woman from the group is from Germany named Silke who is a bit more shy but still friendly, and man is she fit. She just blazed past us on the trail today. We also gave her a piece of pop tart and some skittles to try, and she hated both, which was very funny to watch her disgusted reaction. She hasn’t built up the junk food tolerance that we have I suppose, it takes years to build and I started very young! Carolina is from the Czech Republic, and has a great sense of humor. I can’t imagine the kind of bravery it takes to go to a foreign country where you know no one and the language spoken isn’t your first language, and taking on a monumental task like hiking the PCT. It’s pretty incredible and I have a lot of respect for all the hikers, but especially the foreign ones. We took a picture yesterday before Carolina had showered and she said “I look so dirty and crazy!” 😂 I ask just about everyone “what does your family think of your coming out to do this?” and the most common answers include “they don’t really get it...” and “They think I’m crazy.”

Otter is a 58 year old guy who was in the airforce for 30 years and has spent the last 5 years of his retirement hiking and traveling. He hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2019. Otter said that he decided to hike the AT initially because he read a story of a guy in his town who hiked it when he was 18. The guy had to ask permission from the board of education in Virginia to graduate high school early in order to hike it, and they told him no, so he quit high school and did it anyways. Otter told us that he read that and it stuck with him, and he made it a goal of his to hike the AT someday. He said it took 35 years, but he always remembered that guy and wanted to do it. Just goes to show that you never know what kind of impact you can have on the people around you! He has been very kind to us and let us come to the Airbnb that he had rented to do laundry and shower when we got into Julian, and we have used the Airbnb as a hangout zone for our whole group yesterday and today, which has been great. After showering and having clean clothes, we almost felt like normal people 😂. In Mt Laguna at mile 42, we showered in a campground bathroom and washed our laundry in the shower like the hiker trash we now are. Real food from a restaurant and a cold drink from a trail angel (people that provide food/drinks/rides to hikers) is also incredible. When you’re living so minimally, the little things are a big deal!

Lastly we have Brandon, who I met on Instagram last year and was also supposed to hike the trail but canceled due to Covid. He ended up getting a permit for this year too and started the day after us (coincidentally he is also a travel nurse). Last night, after hanging out at the Airbnb, We camped behind the Julian Market (they allow PCT hikers to camp there) and Brandon came too. At 5:30 in the morning after just settling back down into his sleeping bag after getting up to pee, he hears a voice say “oh good, you’re up. I really need someone to talk to.” He looks over and sees this strange girl that he doesn’t know (and wasn’t there when we went to bed) who is wrapped up in her sleeping bag. He says “Oh, um..are you ok?” And she says “I have no pants”. And proceeds to tell him that she ripped her hiking shorts and didn’t carry any warm sleeping clothes because they were too heavy. He tells her that she needs to have warm base layers if she is going to continue hiking (and not die) and that she can pick some up at the gear store in town. She tells him that she asked the guy she was hiking with if she could come and cuddle with him and he told her no, so she knocked on some random strangers window at 3 AM and asked for a ride from Mt Laguna to Julian, and the stranger gave her a ride (and luckily didn’t murder her). So that’s how she ended up on that back porch in Julian, possibly staring at Brandon for hours and willing him to wake up to tell him this. Apparently she talked to him for about 45 more minutes and at some point said that she was waiting for her meds to arrive. He said “Maybe you should call your family?” And she said “no way! They’ll freak out” 😬. Landon and I were returning from using the bathroom and we walked right past them, I thought that they knew each other somehow and somehow missed the pleading desperation in Brandon’s eyes to help him in this incredibly awkward 5:30 AM conversation with this random girl. Eventually she ended up going to the pie shop across the street and sitting in there to get warm and charge her phone. Long story short, I really hope that girl is ok, because hiking the PCT is hard enough as it is without having any warm pants. Also, hiking is not a replacement for a support system and therapy. Be safe and get mentally healthy before you hike!!

One last funny story. This morning we were eating at a diner when the waitress came over to take our order. She looked at me hesitantly and said “Um...I’m not sure how to handle this...you have a spider on your hat.” I yelped and threw my hat on the table. She grabbed my hat and took it outside and gently shook it off and de-spidered it for me before bringing it back to me 😥. What a good lady!! Please tell people if they are wearing spiders and help them out. I guess I am just becoming one with nature now.

Anyways, this is long enough, but I just want to say that we’ve had lots of great experiences, seen beautiful scenery, and met awesome people. Even though this is incredibly hard, it’s such a cool adventure and I am loving having a great partner to experience it with me. Hoping my feet are doing better in the next section and that none of my blisters get infected! Our friends helped me shake down my pack today and I was able to get rid of at least a pound in weight. When you carry everything on your back, hips and shoulders, every little ounce makes a difference! Much love to everyone and thanks for the support, it’s been a great first week!

Stage 2, week one in Trieste

One week into stage 2 and all is well. Trieste is starting to feel like Trieste again. During the past week in my street the main coffee bar has opened for takeaway drinks and snacks, also the shoe repairer, and the car bodywork repairer. The mini market, greengrocer, butcher, baker, fishmonger, newsagent and pharmacy never closed, they are working as they were during lockdown with only one or two people inside at one time, everyone else lining up outside suitably spaced out. The florist and hairdresser have still to open.

Italy’s numbers keep declining, today only 802 new infections and 165 deaths. Our region saw only 6 new cases and 2 deaths.

Spain’s numbers are also declining, but still higher than Italy with 1,880 new cases and 143 deaths today. Spain has really ramped up the testing and has now tested 52,781 people per million population, one of the highest rates in the world. In comparison, Italy has tested 42,439 per million, whilst the UK has managed only 26,829. Denmark is managing their low numbers of new infections very well in spite of having opened schools, kindergartens and most shops. Nobody wears masks, nor gloves, they are living quite normally. Their numbers have been more or less stable for a month in spite of lifting restrictions. I don’t really understand how Denmark has managed this because most countries saw exponential growth in the beginning without restrictions, now in spite of having few restrictions they are managing to keep new infections under control. I believe the reason must be because of the huge numbers of tests they are carrying out; 54,873 per million, the third highest in Europe after Iceland and Luxembourg. Looks like test, trace and isolate is the way to go.

In the past week I managed to get to work in Ljubljana twice, on Monday and Thursday. Things are much more relaxed there, the sense of isolation and fear that still persists in Italy is absent in Slovenia. I also managed to get a morning coffee every day, not sitting in the bar watching the world go by as I love to do, just a takeaway cup. Takeaway coffee is completely alien to Italians. Coffee is served warm, not piping hot, so that you can stand at the bar and drink it quickly and be on your way. Trieste is known as ‘La Citta di Caffe’, or the City of coffee, being home to Illy, and 500 other companies that work in the coffee business. There are some historic cafes that have changed little in 100 years, and the identity of Trieste is inextricably linked with coffee.

Restaurants with terraces are allowed to serve food outside in Ljubljana, I had a treat on Thursday, lunch served to me for the first time in 9 weeks. An indicative date for opening hotels and restaurants in Slovenia is 1st June, this is still to be confirmed.

The builders are back at work in my new house, and making good progress. They hope to finish by 6th June. I got bad news yesterday however, the local municipality has rejected the architect’s plans - I am not entirely sure what this means but I think I have to pay a fine for non compliance with building regulations. Many things are sorted in Italy with a fine.

I joined fellow expats Maria, Francesco, Vaselica and Liria to sing happy birthday to Nick. We all stood 2 metres apart, with masks on, outside his apartment building, and serenaded him on his special day.

My Mother’s cousin sadly died and of course the family was not permitted to arrange a large funeral, so the service was attended by only his close family; but live streamed to everyone else. Like most Scots, our family is spread over the world, and people joined from all over. It was very moving, I hope this technology will continue after Covid in order to let people who cannot physically get there join.

Bad news from a friend who works as a nurse, she was working in a ward with 8 patients that had been transferred from another hospital. They had all been tested for Covid and were clear, however one was actually infected and went on to infect all the other patients. My friend had one test and is clear and needs another test on Thursday.

It is so nice to be able to get out and walk long distances again. I walked the clifftop Napoleonica yesterday, it was so nice to see the panoramic views of the bay of Trieste that I missed so much during lockdown. Today I walked from Barcola to Miramare and back.

There have been demonstrations in both Trieste and Ljubljana. 800 Business owners in Trieste protested about delays in being able to open their shops and restaurants. Students and young people in Ljubljana have been protesting on bikes about what they see as an infringement of their civil liberties.

I watched a new Netflix series from Belgium called ‘Into the night’. Highly recommended. It is an end of the world drama, and puts our own problems into perspective. I actually felt very positive about my own situation after watching it.

Today I joined the flashmob crew for our last song, ‘That’s what friends are for’, (pictured) I was on the balcony, singing my heart out, but unfortunately there was nobody in the street below to appreciate my efforts. But Peach, Theresa, Laura and Paola all agreed that our daily songs have been important in keeping positive and supporting others as well as ourselves.

Finally, my friend Roby posted a link on facebook to an article that tracks the number of teams in the world working on Covid vaccines. There are an incredible 72 teams working on four different vaccine types. Let’s hope for an effective and safe vaccine soon. In the meantime, I believe that governments and health authorities will become much better at testing and tracking the virus, and also treating it with plasma and other initiatives. We have many reasons to be hopeful.

Smartphone UTI test available at home during COVID-19 lockdown

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Healthy.io has launched a smartphone-based diagnostic for urinary tract infections available to women at home, without a trip to the doctor or pharmacist.

The new service comes amid concerns that some people are deciding to stay away from healthcare services during the COVID-19 crisis, either to avoid adding to the stress on the NHS or for fear of being exposed to the coronavirus.

Healthy.io launched its first Dip.io UTI test kit in the UK through Boots and Day Lewis Pharmacies last year, but now says women can use the new Velieve service to get “a test, diagnosis and antibiotic treatment without leaving the house.”

The company also says it is “significantly subsidising” the service of the next 60 days as the COVID-19 lockdown continues, reducing the cost to the patient to £10.

UTIs – also known as cystitis – are one of the most common types of infection dealt with by GPs, accounting for an estimated 3% of all visits. In England alone, that adds up to around 10 million consultations a year.

A Public Health Survey suggested recently that 95% of women with UTI symptoms visit a doctor and 74% take antibiotics to resolve them.

Healthy.io’s Velieve test combines the traditional dipstick test used by GPs and a pop-up cup to collect a urine sample with a coloured panel that can be used to get a diagnosis using a dedicated smartphone app. It is carried out with guidance from Emily, an in-app nurse who facilitates the test step-by-step.

To make it suitable for use at home, the company has now partnered with online clinician firm Medicspot to launch a new service that does away with a face-to-face healthcare consultation, which it says is a first for the UK market.

The urine testing kit can be ordered and delivered to a home within hours, and after testing an online clinician will diagnose whether the patient has a UTI.

If the result is positive, antibiotic treatment can be ordered for another £15 and delivered by courier to their door “within…three hours”, according to Healthy.io.

That is only the case however for patients living within its initial roll-out area in central London, although the company says it plans to expand the service to the Greater London area in the coming weeks.

“Traditionally, women suffering from a UTI need to secure a GP appointment for treatment and if they are prescribed antibiotics, they need to pick the medication up from a pharmacist,” according to the Israeli start-up.

“Now, women suffering from the painful condition no longer need to leave their homes and risk exposure to COVID-19 for diagnosis and treatment.”

The Velieve test is the only home urinalysis kit with US and EU approval, it says.

ROBOTS ON PRIVATE SECTOR JOBS

Four million jobs in the British private sector could be replaced by robots in the next decade, according to business leaders asked about the future of automation and artificial intelligence.

The potential impact amounts to 15% of the current workforce in the sector and emerged in a poll conducted by YouGov for the Royal Society of Arts, whose chief executive, Matthew Taylor, has been advising Downing Street on the future of modern work.

Jobs in finance and accounting, transport and distribution and in media, marketing, and advertising are most likely to be automated in the next decade, the research says.

The RSA’s prediction of the impact of robotics on working lives is lower than some other estimates. Four years ago, academics at the University of Oxford predicted 35% of jobs could be rendered obsolete by new technology, while the Bank of England predicted in 2015 that up to 15m jobs in Britain were at risk from robots “hollowing out” the workforce.

The RSA is also more optimistic about the potential of robots and artificial intelligence than US tech billionaire Elon Musk, who has said AI was “the scariest problem” and “our biggest existential threat” because he predicts, they will be able to do everything better than humans.

Research by the University of Oxford and Deloitte last year predicted more than 850,000 public sector jobs could be lost by 2030 through automation.

Asda operates a fully automated distribution warehouse in west London; white-collar tasks are being automated by PwC, the accountancy firm, and Linklaters, the law firm, which have been developing software robots that use artificial intelligence to learn to do research tasks usually undertaken by junior accountants and lawyers.

The RSA warns that artificial intelligence and robotics will “undoubtedly cause the loss of some jobs, whether it is autonomous vehicles pushing taxi drivers out of business or picking and packing robots usurping warehouse workers”. But it argues that new technologies could phase out mundane jobs, raise productivity levels and so deliver higher wages and “allow workers to concentrate on more human-centric roles that are beyond the reach of machines”.

It found that business leaders largely believed that new technologies were more likely to alter jobs rather than eliminate them and that this, combined with the creation of new types of jobs, would lead to greater prosperity in the long run.

Care homes are also trialing robots. One in Lincoln plans to use one to help residents remember daily necessities such as taking medication. The robot will also monitor their movements and habits as a nurse would. A care company in London, Three Sisters Home Care, will soon try the use of robots for lifting people so only one care worker will be needed rather than two.

Three Sisters’ chief executive, Jobeda Ali, told the researchers: “If I don’t have to send a person to do a transfer job [lifting], I can send them to have a cup of tea and a chat. This is a much better use of their time than carrying patients or cooking meals.”

The prediction that millions of jobs will be lost to robots led the Trades Union Congress to warn against “shredding good jobs”.

“The UK must make the most of the economic opportunities that new technologies offer,” said Frances O’Grady, general secretary of the TUC. “Robots and AI could let us produce more for less, boosting national prosperity. But we need to talk about who benefits – and how workers get a fair share. The productivity gains must be used to improve pay and conditions for workers.”

Benedict Dellot, the author of the report, said the technical limitations on robots, evidenced so far by driverless cars crashing and the difficulty of getting robots to read at an adult level, would restrict the speed with which jobs will be automated.

The RSA has also warned that Britain needs to invest more in robots or risk falling further behind countries including the US, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy where companies are buying more robots than in the UK.

“AI and robotics could solve some of the gaps and problems in the labor market with low-paid, dull, dirty, dangerous jobs that nobody really wants to fill,” Dellot said. “The technology has the potential to fundamentally improve productivity levels in the UK.”

The report also warns that increasing automation could deepen economic inequality and “demographic biases could become further entrenched”. It argues that to avoid this policymaker should take control of the development of the technology by creating an ethical framework to guide the behavior of AI and to encourage investment in “benevolent technology that enriches the worker experience”.
