Fort San Pedro; The Oldest Triangular Bastion Fort of the Philippines
Cebu boasts many beautiful things such as pristine beaches, breathtaking waterfalls, fresh and yummy seafood, and some of the most historical places in the Philippines, and one of these is Fort San Pedro.
As the oldest and smallest fort in the Philippines, Fort San Pedro was built in 1565 under the direction of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the country's first governor-general, to fend off Muslim pirates. Its walls are eight feet thick and twenty feet tall, forming a triangle with irregular lengths; two sides face the sea and the other land, where the current entrance gate to the fort is situated. It also has a surface area of 2,025 square meters.

Mount Samat National Shrine A.K.A Dambana ng Kagitingan
Hindi kumpleto ang bucket list ninyo kapag bumisita ka sa Bataan nang walang Mt. Samat National Shrine sa listahan mo, ang lugar na ito ay nagpapakita sa kabayanihan ng Pilipinas at mga relics ng World War II.
Maikling kwento kung paano kami nagpunta sa Mount Samat National Shrine sa halip na Dunsulan Falls noong bakasyon taong 2023. Nagplano kaming pamilya na pumunta sa Dunsulan Falls para sa huling bakasyon namin ngayong Hulyo taong 2023. Ang kaso, sarado ito dahil malakas ang ulan at nililinis ang Talon, nakakatuwang alaala sa amin ito dahil pagdating namin doon, sarado pa sila at huling araw na bago ito muling magbukas sa kasunod na araw. Kaya para hindi masayang ang aming biyahe, dumiretso kami sa Mount Samat National Shrine.
Kung nagbabalak kayong magpunta ng Mt. Samat ay maaari na rin kayong mag-relax sa Dunsulan Falls na matatagpuan sa paanan ng bundok, ito ay ilang minuto ang layo mula sa Mt. Samat. Gayunpaman, sa blog na ito, tututukan ko ang pagbabahagi ng Mt. Samat. Kaya kung meron pa kayong oras, sulit na daanan na din ang Dunsulan Falls.
Noong Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig, isang makabuluhan at malungkot na kabanata ng kasaysayan ang naganap sa Pilipinas, partikular na malapit sa Mount Samat sa isla ng Luzon. Nasaksihan ng lugar na ito ang isa sa pinakamahalagang labanan sa digmaan. Ang mga sundalong Pilipino at Amerikano ay magiting na nakipaglaban sa mabigat na puwersa ng Hapon ngunit nahaharap sa matinding pagkatalo. Sila ay umatras sa Mt.Samat, ngunit napatunayang napakalakas ng mga Hapones. Ang labanang ito ay nagresulta sa pinakamalaking pagsuko ng mga sundalong Amerikano sa kasaysayan ng digmaan. Matapos sumuko, ang mga pagod na pagod at may sugatan na mga sundalo ay sumailalim sa kasumpa-sumpa sa Bataan Death March, isang brutal na sapilitang martsa na nasa mahigit 65 milya upang marating ang Camp O'Donnell. Nakalulungkot, ngunit humigit-kumulang 10,000 sundalo ang nasawi sa nakakapagod na paglalakbay na ito.
Bagama't hindi maitatanggi ang makasaysayang kahalagahan ng site na ito, ito ay nagsisilbing matinding paalala ng mga paghihirap na dinanas noong panahon ng digmaan. Ngayon, nakatayo ang Mount Samat bilang simbolo ng katatagan at pag-alala, na nag-aalok sa mga manlalakbay ng pagkakataong pagnilayan ang nakaraan at bigyang pugay ang mga sakripisyong ginawa ng mga nakaharap ng ating mga Pilipino sa panahong ito.
Ang buong paligid ng krus ay napanatili na maayos at malinis ang kapaligiran, nakapaligid ang magandang hardin na puno ng namumulaklak na mga bulaklak sa bawat sulok ng lugar.
Sa entrance gate, may mga stalls kung saan makakabili ka ng mga souvenir. May nakasalubong kaming sorbetero vendor sa harapan. Tag init pa naman kaya hindi ako nakapagpigil na bumili ng isang cone ng ice cream.
Bago pumasok ay kailangang mag-oryentasyon ng mga dapat gawin at hindi dapat gawin ang mga pumapasok upang matiyak na ang lugar ay mapapanatiling malinis kaya bawal magdala ng pagkain sa loob at maging maingat ang mga tao kapag nasa loob ng museum. Kaya naman agad rin naming inubos ang sorbeter na kakabili namin bago maglakad. Pagkatapos ng oryentasyon, mamarkahan ang likod ng mga kamay at kung wala ito, hindi ka makakapasok. Ang marka sa likod ng kamay ay nagsisilbing tiket upang makapasok at umakyat sa hagdan patungo sa museum at sa pinakatuktok kung nasaan ang krus.
Ang footpath mula sa Memorial Cross sa Mount Samat ay patungo sa Colonnade, bahagi ng Dambana ng Kagitingan (Shrine of Valor). Dito, makikita ang isang grand shrine complex na nakatuon sa pagpupugay sa kabayanihan at sakripisyo ng mga sundalong Amerikano at Pilipino noong Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig. Pag-akyat, dito matatagpuan ang bandila ng Pilipinas.
Sa loob ng Colonnade, mayroong isang eleganteng altar na may mosaic glass mural, isang maliit na WWII museum, at inscribed marble walls kung saan nakasulat na madetalye ang Battle of Bataan. Marami ang nakapalibot na mga armament, eleganteng kanyon, at napakagandang hardin.
Katabi nito ang entrance ng museum sa loob, Bawal kumuha ng litrato sa loob kaya ito lang ang mga litrato na nakunan ko pagpasok.
Bukod sa kung ano ang nasa loob ng museum, mayroon ding mga naglalakihang kanyon sa labas, nasa tabi lang ang mga ito ng kalsada. Ang mga kalsada naman na ito ay hindi pwedeng daanan o pasukan ng kahit na anong sasakyan dahil nasa paradahan ng sasakyan ang mga ito. Kaya naman maglalakad talaga paakyat kung gustong pumunta sa tuktok kung saan nakatayo ang krus.
Sa kasamaang palad, noong bumisita kami sa krus, hindi na pinapayagan ang pagpasok sa krus dahil posible ang mga aksidente sa loob, mayroon nang kaunting mga bitak na makikita sa mga dingding. Hindi na ligtas para sa mga turista na maglakad-lakad sa loob o gumamit ng elevator kaya naman ipinagbabawal na nilang pumasok dito. Ngunit, maaari ka pa ring kumuha ng litrato at maglakad-lakad sa paligid ng krus. Napakaganda ng tanawin dito at kitang kita ang mga bahay-bahay at bukid na tanaw mula sa taas ng bundok.
Instagrammable ang kuhanan ng mga litrato dito, lalo na't ang paligid ay may mabuhay na hardin na puno ng mga makukulay na bulaklak.
Ang Mt. Samat ay isang makasaysayang, kultural at pamana ng turism zone na gumugunita sa kabayanihan ng mga Pilipino para sa bansang Pilipinas at mga labi ng World War II, na naglalayong ipakilala ang higit pang mga pag-unlad sa Shrine of Valor at ang locator site na nito upang gawin itong isang umuusbong na world-class na makasaysayang lungsod at turismong destinasyon sa bansa.
