Liza Borches, president and CEO of Carter Myers Automotive, a long-time Cvillian, shares her favorite things about our town.
Please share your Cville story. I moved here with my family in the summer of 1989. My father had opened Colonial Auto Center and the business needed his full attention so we moved from Richmond to Charlottesville to help grow CMA into Charlottesville. At the time, we had several dealerships in Richmond and a car rental company, AutoRent.
How long have you been here? I lived here from 1989-1997 while I went to high school and then attended UVA. After I graduated from the Comm School, I left Cville for six years to go work for American Honda Motor Company in Torrance, CA and around the country before returning to Charlottesville. I had the opportunity to buy the local Volvo dealership in 2004 and my husband and I moved back to put down our roots, open a business and join the Cville community for life!
Now for a list of favorites...
Thing about the town. The sense of community – we have the most generous community yet also one with many families in need. I am so proud of the conversations that are happening, the air of collaboration and the desire as a community to come together. In a more physical sense, I love the outdoors and the opportunity that Charlottesville gives us to explore nature in town and all around us. Being able to bike to the farmer’s market, head up the mountain to Wintergreen, run through the UVA grounds, and hike the Rivanna trail is what brings joy to me daily! Having high level college athletics to cheer on throughout the year is an added bonus. Go Hoos!
Season: Spring is my favorite time of year in Charlottesville as I watch the blooms appear all over town. I am lucky not to have allergies so I can deal with pollen better than most! After hibernating a bit in the winter, I feel like our town comes alive in the first several weekends of Spring. The Charlottesville Ten Miler is my gateway into Spring. I love running this race and it is usually one of the first long runs of the year when I don’t have to dress for the cold!
Neighborhood: We live on the west side of town now but we lived in the city for 11 years. The Oxford Road and Rugby neighborhood will always hold a special place in my heart – both of our kids were born there and we spent many days at Greenleaf park, pushing the stroller to the downtown mall or through UVA, walking to the Dogwood Festival, and making so many friends for life through all of the families that lived on our street.
Place for a drink: We love to sneak over to Vivace and have a drink at the bar or at a table outside. The staff there are so friendly and make it feel like our neighborhood spot!

Event in the area: I can’t name just one. I love The Women’s Four Miler, The Big Gig and the Dogwood Festival. I still ride all of the rides!

Alkaline batteries vary in size, voltage and shape but you will likely recognize them as the same ones you use in household items like flashlights and toys. They are also known as single use or general purpose batteries.
In 1993, alkaline battery manufacturers stopped the production of batteries containing mercury. Because of this, it is now considered acceptable to dispose of your batteries within the household trash container.
Although they no longer contain mercury, it is still recommended that you take precautions with alkaline batteries. We recommend avoiding collecting large numbers of alkaline batteries in the same bag for disposal.
Oftentimes, even when a battery seems dead there is still power remaining. Grouping used batteries together can bring them into contact with each other, causing safety risks.
And what about recycling alkaline batteries?
Though this is an option in some areas, the ease at which it is made to dispose of alkaline batteries with regular household trash has limited the infrastructure for alkaline battery recycling. If you know of an alkaline battery recycler in your area, verify that not only are they collecting your batteries but also are recycling them properly. (In our own undercover research, we have found that despite their claims to recycle, many alkaline battery collection points will simply discard alkaline batteries in the trash)
It is important to note, alkaline batteries cannot be recycled with your single stream recycling, so make sure to keep them out of your recycling bin!
Also, NEVER dispose of alkaline batteries in fire (and always keep them away from heat and flame) as they will explode!

Automotive Batteries:
Car batteries are one of the most recycled products in the nation, with a 98-99% recycling rate. But, like rechargeable batteries, they require their own form of recycling and cannot be included in your single stream recycling at home.

Honda is celebrating its 60th anniversary in the United States with a blast from the past with classic motorcycles and a replica of the delivery truck it used during its early years. When it first arrived into the U.S. market back in 1959, Honda bought a fleet of Chevrolet Apache 10 pickups to use as delivery vehicles for the products it was importing over from Japan. Back then, Honda only sold motorcycles and would use its trucks to ship its two-wheeled goods across its dealership network in Southern California. Last week, Honda celebrated its 60th anniversary in the U.S.
In an attempt to recreate a photo of one of the delivery trucks parked in front of its old headquarters on 4077 Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA, Honda bought a 1961 Chevrolet Apache pickup and restored it to like-new condition, painting it in the same livery as the original delivery trucks by referencing archival images and getting insight from employees of that era. The truck was powered by a 160-hp V-8 engine mated to a three-speed manual transmission. Additionally, two restored classic motorcycles, a Honda 50 and CB160, are placed on the truck bed, and the recreation is now on display at Honda’s headquarters in Torrance, CA.
It took a few years before Honda expanded into the automobile sector. From 1959 to 1968, the company only sold motorcycles. The first Honda vehicle imported to the U.S. was an N600, a modified version of the N360 kei car that went on sale as a 1970 model.
