You were sleeping peacefully. You were resting your head on Jamie's chest as you snuggled with him and heard his heart beating, alongside with the feeling of warmth that he could always provide you. You were indeed in deep sleep, until a noise coming from the hallway woke you up slowly.

You could hear footsteps, little feet hitting the wooden floor, making you smile lazily, knowing exactly who it was that was running through the hallway on the second floor of your home, that you've shared with your husband Jamie for about eight years now.

You met him about fifteen years ago when you were teaching your first class. You were an elementary school teacher and you had started working that year when Jamie and his partner went to the school your worked at and visited every class, including yours, to teach little kids about the importance of policing and that whenever they were in trouble they could seek a cop for help... that kind of stuff. You honestly can't remember very well what it was that he was telling the class because you were mesmerized by him. He was the most handsome man you have ever laid your eyes on, plus he was great with the kids. And he was nice and kind... Anything you could hope for in a man. By the end of the lecture, you walked them out of the class and you must have caused that very same effect on him because he too seemed stunned by you and was brave enough to ask you for your phone number. Two little bodies jumped on the bed, knocking you out of the doze you were in, and waking up Jamie from his peacefull sleep.

"Wake up! It's Christmas!" Your six year old daughter said as she laid on her dad's back.

"Whoa..." Jamie said with his raspy voice, that you loved, from still being a bit sleepy. "Is it?"

"Yes, daddy! We have to go downstairs to see what Santa got us!" She replied, her voice full of excitment.

Jamie turned his head to you and you simply just smiled at him with shrug of your shoulders.

"Yes mommy, let's go!" This time it was your three year old son, who laid down between his parents with pleading blue eyes, just like his dad's, starring right into yours.

"Alright who else wants a piggy back ride down the stairs?"

Jamie got up from the bed, Emma hugging him, legs wrapped around his back and her little hands tugging at his collar.

"I do!!!" Joe, your son, said before jumping on his father's back.

"Anyone else?"

"Oh, I would love to but I can't live with my conscience clear if you break your back with all the three of us on top of you." You said as you sat down on the bed.

He let out a little laugh and started walking down the stairs, slowly, carrying your children on his back. You got up and put on your robe before walking down the steps to meet them on the living room where you had your very well decorated Christmas tree,with all the handmade ornaments your kids made in kindergarten, with all the wrapped gifts underneath. You found them sitting on the floor and joined the group, taking your place next to Jamie.

"Can we start opening them?" Emma asked, looking at her parents.

"Sure thing, love." You said before kissing the top of her head.

She didn't know how to read yet, at least not perfectly, so they needed help with you and Jamie telling them which gifts were to.

"Wow! Santa gave me a chalkboard! I'm so happy!"

"Let's see if he got you something else too..." Jamie said as he searched for his gift to Emma under the tree. He had a hard time finding it but once he did, he smiled and handed it to her. It was something she really wanted too, and he was positive she'd be thrilled once she opened it.

She tore the wrapping paper apart quickly and gasped in surprise when she saw what it was.

"The Frozen castle!!"

"You like it?" He asked, even though by admiring her expression, she didn't need to say anything to answer his question.

It was the castle from Frozen, the Disney movie, where Else lived and she's been saying she wanted it ever since she saw the movie. Last year it was sold out and this year Jamie made sure he was the first one to buy it, getting up an hour earlier than usual just to be the first one entering the mall, able to escape the big crowd of parents that wanted to buy their kids the perfect gift, on the Black Friday extravaganza. And to say that castle was huge was the understatement of the century.

"Yes!!! How did Santa know I wanted this?"

"You did wrote him a letter saying that's what you wanted, didn't you?" You asked, as you tucked a strand of blonde hair behind her ear.

"Yes, I did."

Before Joe could open his gifts, she still opened her other gifts from the other family members, which included three DVD's of her favorite movies from uncle Danny, a very very very cute dress from her aunt Erin and few other stuff from her greatgrandpa and grandfather.

"You know why Santa gave you all these things? Because you're on the nice list." He said before benting down to kiss the top of her head.

Your kids were indeed very nice kids, not only during this time of the year, but also throughout the whole twelve months. They definitely got their kind hearts from Jamie. Not that you hadn't one, but he was a whole different level of kindess. And you were glad your kids got it from him.

Joe was no exception, and he too received lots of gifts but the one he liked the most, was the one you had bought him.

It was a Hot Wheels track set... And it wasn't just any track set, it was the biggest one they've made during all these years. It was his only wish for Santa, and you knew he'd freak out when he saw the big box and what it had inside.

"No way!!!" He said before gasping and looking at the blue and orange box with his eyes wide opened.

Yes, you know that was maybe a little too advanced for a three year old but that's what he wanted and even if he didn't play with it much during this first year, you knew that at least in a year or two, that'd be his favorite thing to play with.

"You wanna open the other gifts?" Jamie asked, already handing him the box that contained his gift for him.

Joe took it from him and started ripping the paper apart, just like his sister did, and smiled big when he saw what it was.

It was an NYPD set. And that contained one NYPD uniform, a plastic shiled and weapon (you were totally against that but Jamie was raised by cops and he turned out fine so, what's really wrong with it?), a (real) walkie talkie that had a matching one for someone else to play with him, plus miniature cars of every vehicle the NYPD owned. Jamie and his brother were really trying to get Joe to like the job but the thing is... He's still too young and at this point, he doesn't care a lot about it.

"Wow, that's really cool, isn't it, daddy?"

Jamie was so proud and happy that he actually liked the gift that he could not stop grinning.

"Yep, it's pretty cool. You gotta show that to uncle Danny, he's gonna love it!"

He said that but Joe was already into the other boxes. He got a perfume from Erin and a huge box set of playdoh, that he was thrilled about, from Danny, plus some other great gifts from Henry and Frank.

"Mommy, why don't you and daddy open your gifts from Santa?"

Jamie and you shared a smile and got your boxes. You had agreed that you were only opening the gifts that you had bought in you kids' names for each other, and that the ones that you bought for him and that he bought for you, you were opening in your bedroom, alone, since you had all the receipts and well... Santa doesn't usually give kids that.

Emma had offered you a red and cozy sweater that you loved and that you were craving for a couple of months and yes... you might have given a hint to Jamie. And Joe, bought you a new school brief case, that you also liked very much.

Now Jamie, had gotten a watch from Joe and a new suit from Emma, that he also liked a lot.

"Alright, I think we're all done here... Why don't you go sit at the table and wait for us to get back and cook breakfast. Daddy's gona shave and mommy's gonna brush her hair okay?" Jamie said, walking them to the kitchen table, making sure they were sitting there quietly while they waited for you to get back down.

"Okay, so I really hope you like it. I think you will but, see it for yourself." You said before handing Jamie your Christmas gift to him.

"It's from you so, I know I will." He said, before opening the box carefully. He picked up the card and started reading on the back.

"Wow... This sounds amazing!" He stated, before looking at you.

"Really?"

"Yes, thank you so much!"

You offered him a two night getaway, just for the two of them, on a hotel near the beach.

"I figured we both needed at least two nights of rest and three days of peace and quiet and just a few days to spoil ourselves." You explained yourself to him.

"Well, I hate to dissapoint you but those two nights aren't gonna be that restful..." He said before kissing your lips.

You laughed at him and opened his gift, that he was giving you.

"Same speech for you, I hope you like it."

You smiled and opened the box, gasping when you saw what it was.

"Aw, thank you so much! You're so cheesy, I love you!" You said, leaning in to kiss him.

It was a thin gold necklace with a heart that was engraved and that said "Jamie & (Y/N)" .

"Did you really like it?"

"Yes! I loved it! Thank you." You said before kissing him again.

"Merry Christmas, babe."

"Merry Christmas." You said before a noise interrupted you. Or better saying, a voice.

It was Emma calling out for you two, and you quickly put the gifts away before going down the stairs and cooking and eating breakfast with your adorable children.

Love Around The Holiday Tree (An Olicity fanfic)

Felicity sat quietly at the dining room table, staring at the present in front of her.  She admired her handiwork as she raked her eyes over the small square box covered in red and green striped paper.  The corners were folded perfectly and a green bow sat neatly on top.  It was definitely her best wrap job to date, but it wasn't the outside of the box she was worried about.  No, the pit in her stomach was solely formed based on the contents inside.  The idea came to her today at work: the perfect holiday gift for Oliver. She had been so excited about it all day, but now that it was all wrapped up and ready, she was having second thoughts.  Maybe it was too cheesy.  Maybe he wouldn't like it.  Or maybe... maybe she just wasn't ready to give him this particular present quite yet.

As she groaned in frustration, she heard a door open and shut.

"I'm home!" Oliver's voice rang out.

Instead of replying, Felicity grabbed the present and jumped to her feet, looking for somewhere to hide it.

"Felicity? William?" Oliver called out as he entered the kitchen in search for his fiancée and son.

"Hey." Felicity spoke sweetly as she rushed to hide the gift behind her back.  "How was your day?"

"Good." Oliver answered none-the-wiser, giving her a quick kiss.  "Where's William?"

"He's in the living room with Zoe."  Felicity answered, smoothing out the fabric of her dress nervously.  "They were finishing decorating the Christmas tree."

"Holiday tree." He corrected, taking her free hand and kissing her knuckles before leading her down the hallway to the living room.

Felicity could help but smile.  She loved how respectful and inclusive he was of her Jewish heritage, especially at this time of year.  He rarely used the words Christmas or Hanukkah.  Oliver almost always said holiday: holiday party, holiday gifts, holiday tree. One of the many things she loved about him.

As they reached the living room, the couple stopped in the doorway, watching the scene play out in front of them.  Sure enough, William was in there with Rene's daughter, Zoe.  They were decorating the tree and listening to "Jingle Bell Rock" on the music television channel as they talked and laughed.  It was such a precious sight, especially when the preteens reached for an ornament at the same time and brushed their finger tips together.  They both jerked backed immediately and blushed then quickly went back to decorating.

"How cute are they?" Felicity asked rhetorically as they kept watching the kids.  They hung a few more ornaments, and then, as the music faded into a slow rendition of "Somebody's Angel," William followed Zoe's lead and laid down on the floor.  Once the teens were staring at the ceiling in supine position, they scooted upward and slid their heads underneath the tree to look at it from below.

"What are they doing?" Oliver whispered.

"Taking in their hard work from a new angle."  Felicity explained simply, remembering how she used to do the same thing to admire the lights and ornaments on her friends' trees when she was young.  Never having one herself, since her family celebrated Hanukkah rather than Christmas, she had always enjoyed seeing them wherever she could.  There was just something so magical about them.

"Ah." Oliver nodded in understanding.

"Oh, look." Felicity gestured with a nod of her own and a slight smirk.

Returning his gaze to his son, Oliver noticed William's left hand moving little by little, closing the gap between him and Zoe.  Finally, his hand found hers, and he squeezed it gently.  Zoe welcomed the gesture, threading her fingers easily through his.

As the kids laid there with their hands intertwined, Felicity bit her lip to hold back a squeal, wishing she could see their faces right now.  Their cheeks had to be rosier than Santa's Suit.  Peering over at Oliver, she noticed his facial expression change from happy to something wistful as he let out a soft sigh.

Bumping his shoulder with hers, she questioned, "Hey, what's wrong?  You worried about Rene being an in-law someday?" She added teasingly.

"No, it's nothing like that."  He told her with a lopsided smile.  "It's just... apparently, he's ready for his first girlfriend."

"Isn't that a good thing?" Felicity queried.

"Yes," He relented.  "but it's just another reminder of how fast he's growing up and of how much of his life I've already missed out on."

"I get it, you won't ever get back those early years with William, and that sucks, but you still have right now and plenty more years to come." She pointed out.  

"Only five, then he will be off to college and starting his own life."  He tossed back.

"Yes, he most likely will be going to college and most definitely will have a life of his own one day, but when that does happen, he's not going to just stop being your son." Felicity assured him.

"I know that deep down." He replied.  "I guess I just wish that I would have known about him sooner... that I could have been there for him sooner."

Felicity's heart broke and swelled all at the same time as she listened to his words.  All her worry from before was suddenly gone, and she knew that this was the moment.  She was ready and pretty sure that he was ready too.

"Here." She said softly, lifting the small box into view and holding it out to him.

Oliver took the box and arched a brow as he inquired, "What is it?"

"Your Christmukkah present." Felicity answered vaguely.  "Open it."

"But it's not Christmas yet." He stated obviously.  "Or Hanukkah."

"I know, but this can't wait until then and neither can I."  She told him as she nervously tucked some loose hair behind her ear.

"Okay."  He relented then began tearing off the wrapping. Once it was all off, he shoved the remnants of paper into his suit jacket pocket and took in the small white box that sat in his hand.  Carefully removing the lid, Oliver brushed aside a layer of tissue paper, revealing a tree ornament.  It was a small gold shoe with a white chiffon ribbon at the top.  Feeling confused, he looked at Felicity.

"A tennis shoe?"

She just smiled and said, "Look closer."

Oliver obliged, picking the ornament up by its ribbon and letting it dangle in the air.  It was indeed a tiny shoe.  However, there was a heart-shaped charm hanging off the side of it that he hadn't noticed before.  Rotating the ornament, he read aloud the words etched in the middle of the heart.

"Baby's first Christmas?" He queried.

"Yeah,"  She replied.  "I would have went with baby's first holiday, but I couldn't find one, and, believe me, I tried.  I went to, like, ten different stores today. There were some Hanukkah ones, but they weren't as pretty, and besides, this was for you, and you are the Christmas side of our Christmukkah holiday so--

"Felicity." Oliver cut her off, emphasizing each syllable of her name.  "Why are you giving me this?" He wondered aloud, wanting confirmation of what he thought the ornament meant.

"Well, I know you sort of missed out on raising a child once, but, as it turns out, you're about to get another chance." Felicity paused, took a deep breath, then finally said the words out loud.  "I'm pregnant."

"Really?" He found himself asking, partly in shock, partly in excitement.

"Yes." She smiled.

Oliver barely had time to smile back before pulling his fiancée into his arms and showing her just how happy he was to hear this news.

As soon as their lips met, Felicity felt like a huge weight had been lifted from her shoulders.  She was incredibly happy that he was so happy, and for the first time, she felt truly excited about taking this next step in their life together.

Pulling back slightly, Oliver left a hand on her cheek and his forehead pressed against hers as he whispered, "I love you."

"I love you, too." She whispered back then gave him another quick peck on the lips.

"Hey, dad." William interrupted as he entered the hallway.

"Hey, kiddo." Oliver replied.  He was still not quite used to being called the "d" word, at least not that "d" word, but apparently that was going to change and soon, much sooner than he ever would have expected.  "What are you guys up to?"

"I'm going to teach William how to make popcorn garland."  Zoe answered.

"We do have popcorn, right?"  William asked hopefully, looking between his father and soon-to-be stepmom.

"In the pantry." Felicity nodded.

"Sweet." William answered before continuing down the hallway with Zoe in tow.

"So... how do you want to tell William?" Felicity questioned quietly, figuring he was the next one on the need-to-know list.

Oliver, knowing exactly what she was referring to, thought for a moment then said, "I don't know, but probably not with this."

Watching him lift the ornament into the view once again, Felicity understood.  "Yeah, well... no worries, we can just hide it until next year."

"Actually," Oliver responded with a cheeky grin.  "I have a better idea.  Come, on."  He urged, leading the way into the living room.  

They made their way over to the holiday tree where he dropped the small, white box he had been holding into the plastic storage bin for ornaments.  Glancing back at the golden ornament in his other hand, he smiled sweetly at what he now understood to be a bootie, a baby bootie... for his baby, the baby he made with Felicity.  Oliver felt like his heart was going to explode with euphoria.  It was all so surreal.  Sighing in contentment, he took a step forward and hung the ornament around the side of the top part of the tree. Stepping back, he put an arm around Felicity, and together they stared at the tree.  It was perfect, hidden in plain sight, totally unnoticeable among the other bulbs and decorations unless you knew it was there.

"Merry Christmukkah." Felicity said as she leaned her head on Oliver's shoulder.

"Merry Christmukkah." He repeated with a grin then turned to kiss the side of her head.  

They continued to stand there for a long blissful moment until a familiar boyish voice called out to them.

"Do you like it?" William asked as the kids re-entered the room, each with their own giant bowl of popcorn.

"It looks fantastic." Felicity replied as she and Oliver turned to look at the teenagers.

"You guys did a very nice job."  Oliver agreed.

"Wanna help us with the garland?" Zoe asked excitedly.

"Sure." Oliver nodded then headed to the large sofa sectional where the four of them sat and began to string popcorn.  For the next hour, they talked and joked around and ate more popcorn than they actually strung, causing them to have to make two more bags.  Eventually, though, they managed to finish the task then decided to order Chinese take-out for dinner.  The four of them ate family style in front of the television, watching the 2000 version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  As they did so, Oliver felt happier than he had in a long time.  He quite liked this family of four thing, and, by the end of the movie, as Zoe slept against his shoulder and snored softly, he realized something else.  Looking from Zoe to the tree across the room and back, he realized that he really liked the idea of having a daughter.

Daughter or son, girl or boy... deep down, it didn't really matter to Oliver.  Either way, a baby Smoak-Queen was on the way and that was the best Christmukkah gift he could have ever asked for.

My motivation

The first thing I want to do when I get up in the morning is surf. With school, variating weather and tides, I can’t go every day but it’s always my first thought in the morning and no matter what, I always check the ocean from my balcony and fantasize about the waves. I’m really passionate about surfing which has led me to get involved into environmental conservation. Surfing is a magical sensation, you’re literally riding a wave, doesn’t that sound fantastical enough? As if it came from a movie or another planet?

I started “surfing” when I was about 5, my dad would take me out and push me on some waves. Here is the first picture I ever got taken surfing:

Throughout my life, I went through phases of surfing and I didn’t quite take it seriously until over two years ago when it became real. The moment that marked the beginning of this stage in my life was when I started using one of my dad’s old boards and I caught my first wave by myself. At this moment, I felt capable of surfing and I wanted to continue, learn and improve. I gradually started getting more and more interested and obsessed with surfing. At the start, I would only surf for about an hour with my dad, now I surf up to 5 hours straight, with or without him. I have gone on surf trips to Dominical, Santa Teresa, Ollie’s Point, Witch’s Rock, Marbella, Junquillal and Ostional. My home break is Avellanas and I would never trade that beach for anything else, it is simply perfect and I have grown to be comfortable and attached to it. Here is a recent picture of me surfing:

Even before I started surfing, I was always connected with the ocean. I love the ocean with all of my heart because it has such a great influence in my life, specially since I have been living next to it since I was born. I enjoy sport fishing even though I don’t do it as often anymore, because it has helped me become aware of the consequences and the importance of marine conservation and environmental care in general. Ecosystems need to be healthy and through fishing I learned how to care for the marine animals and take only what is worth it and truly necessary. The key for everything in life is balance. 

Coming in contact with marine wildlife made me fall in love with the ocean and its’ wonders even more. Out on the boat I’ve seen manta rays and billfish jumping, turtles mating and dolphins swimming and playing around the boat. Once, I even swam around the boat with dolphins that just happened to appear when we had stopped to take a break from fishing. I used to be jealous of people who went to vacation at Hawaii and would come back bragging about how they got to swim with dolphins at an aquarium, but not anymore! I got to experience this out in nature without any obligation from the dolphins! You don’t even need to go out on a boat or to an aquarium to experience this, the magic happens surfing or simply swimming too; you see stingrays chasing you around or flipping and jumping in the air, fish swimming next to you, turtles popping up ahead of you or baby ones climbing onto your hand or board, etc. 

Exploring the sea is remarkable, until you find human footprints, and it becomes devastating. Floating piles of trash, marine animals stuck in plastic or found dead due to intoxication from plastic ingestion or simply trash washed up or thrown on the beach. It really sparks my anger and I can’t believe this is how people treat the only home we have. With unhealthy marine ecosystems, we won’t have an ocean to enjoy, sea food to savor and soon enough we won’t have an Earth to live on because the imbalance will be irreversible. I have always appreciated time spent outdoors, specially at the beach or in the ocean, and all my experiences in nature have shaped me into who I am now and have driven me to become protective of it. I believe that not only love and passion for the environment and animal life should be what inspire people to take care of it, but at this point, simply the fact of assuring having a planet to live on; which is why I want to raise awareness and work towards a healthier and cleaner world. 

Every day I work on becoming a positive, patient and outstanding leader. I want to make a change in this world and help save the planet. I’m proud of myself for choosing a healthy lifestyle and becoming a surfer because it has helped me become the best version of myself possible. I try to make my surf sessions last as long as possible because surfing and the sea are like meditation for me, it helps clear my mind and become aware of my surroundings. When surfing, you really need to be there, in the moment, because anything could happen; a set could come, someone could run you over or throw their board at you, etc. Whenever I feel down, the ocean is always there for me, it is a place where I can go think and do something I enjoy to calm myself and be able to think clearly. Not just when I am surfing, but every day, I try to stay positive because it is so easy to let yourself go and sink in with all the issues happening worldwide. It’s tough staying positive when there are so many people out there suffering for conflicts that aren’t their fault, entire ecosystems being destroyed just for the needs of selfish humans and simply ignorant people who go about without even being aware of this. I utilize my love and passion for the ocean and surfing to reflect on my life and surroundings so I can appreciate what I have and continue forward with a positive mindset and ready to overcome any inconveniences.

My Aspirations

I’m not 100% sure of where I am heading in life but I know I want to make a difference. I am interested in studying Business Management and incorporating my environmental knowledge and conservation skills into a business to hopefully make a change in the world. A business that has greatly inspired me is Patagonia; they really go through a lot of trouble to make their products sustainable, environmentally friendly and the company is a huge success. Something I would like to achieve in these upcoming weeks is to actually sell some of the natural surf wax that I brought into the school store, it is a small change for surfers that can make a big difference in the environment because regular surf wax uses petrochemicals and is not biodegradable. I also want to help my neighbor (who is distributing these waxes) with marketing the product so surfers in the area collaborate and become aware of the environmental importance and impact. Another specific goal in the near future is to help restore the Avellanas mangrove in collaboration with ConnectOcean, which is basically my entire CAS project, but I would like to add my own creative twist which I still have to develop. Other specific goals I have for my future in the long run is to travel and surf some of the most famous spots worldwide because I want to explore nature and experience new waves.

My Work

I work the hardest and put my best efforts in to pretty much anything I do as long as it interests me and is important to me, for example school and surfing. My dad has always told me that if I’m going to start something, I have to finish it, do it well and never leave it “a medio palo” which is a Costa Rican expression for not finishing it and basically abandoning it. A few skills or types of work I have learnt to do well are math, marketing products and many arts and crafts. I enjoy and understand math really well, I learn it fairly quickly and form part of the advanced math class which trains to participate in the Costa Rican math olympics. During the trimester I worked in the marketing team for the school store, I felt like I developed the skill properly and used my strong passion for nature to promote sustainability. I am creative and enjoy painting, coloring, crafting and drawing. My grandma is a painter and I believe I got the talent from her; since I was little I was always into art and over the years I have practiced and learnt new skills and used different mediums. 

Kids love the magic os snowglobes, but the obvious danger of glass makes parents anxious. This simple DIY involves a small plastic jar with a lid, a form of fake snow (a white powder, glitter, styrofoam balls etc.), a small decoration like this model tree, and a form of glue to fasten the lid to avoid spills. This tiny snowglobe puts the magic of snowglobes safely in your little one’s hands.

  A less expensive alternative to ornaments is a homemade present box. Simply find some smaller boxes or cube-shaped objects laying around your house, find some wrapping paper (this is a great way to make use of scraps of paper) and ribbons. This is a great way to teach your child how to wrap presents and add unique items to your tree.

  Capturing memories and adding them to a Christmas tree makes it so personable and cheery. With a polaroid camera, send your child around to snap a photo of things that make them happy, and hang the pictures up along the tree. These already come out as the perfect size, but you can also use a regular camera or phone and print them out smaller.

  Tags are a quick and easy Christmas craft. All that is needed is paper, scissors and string or ribbon. Your child can write a seasons greeting, note to Santa, or just a cute scribble. Then pierce a hole through the paper and tie the ribbon/string. This can be used as an ornament, a name tag on a gift, around a centerpiece.

  A fun way to make use of all the cardboard from amazon boxes and toys is to design a playhouse. Let your child imagine a fun building in a small corner of your house, or closet like pictured above, and measure out how much room and cardboard you will need. This will be a fun family project that lets the child and the parent flex their imagination. Have fun bringing it to life and add special touches like paint, drawings, a window, and even door.

Palisade and Venue: Hyundai’s got you covered no matter what size you need

You’ve got to hand it to Hyundai, just months after launching their largest SUV to date, the three–row Palisade, they bring us their smallest, the Venue. Both of which I’m sure will be a hit with many a household. 

Hyundai Palisade: Getting it right the first time

The Palisade shares the same platform with its corporate cousin, Kia’s Telluride. With giddy up coming from the same transversely mounted 3.8L, 291-hp V6 producing 262 lb-ft of torque mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission riding on the same suspension and brakes. Prices for the Palisade start at $38,826.20 for the front-wheel-drive Essential trim and climb to just over 51 grand for the top of the line Ultimate trim. In between you’ve got the $45,699 all-wheel-drive Preferred (Hyundai needs to get more creative with their trim names) and the $50,399 Luxury, which as the name implies gets leather seating, a 10.25” touch screen and surround view and blind spot monitor.

Even the base Palisade gets you heated seats, heated steering wheel and reclining second row seats – competition take note. As well you get trailer sway control, vehicle stability management. Hyundai’s HTRAC all-wheel-drive system, along with multi terrain control modes is a $2,000 option on the Essential if you don’t want or need to step up to the Preferred which adds 20” wheels, auto-leveling rear suspension, three-zone climate control and the usual safety features; blind spot collision avoidance, rear cross traffic collision avoidance and safe exit assist. As mentioned earlier the Luxury will get you into cowhide seating, a 10.25” touch screen and surround view monitor.

My tester, the top tier Ultimate trim featured Nappa leather, heads-up display, a good looking 12.3”digital cluster (not available on the Kia) that spanned half the dash and didn’t look like an after thought add on, a chrome grill and fancier 20” wheels set the Ultimate apart from the lesser models.

On The Road

I can’t really pin point what it was but my ride in the Palisade was a lot more enjoyable than in the Kia. The Hyundai is a lot easier to toss into a corner, the electrically assisted steering feels precise and light, but dial in Sport mode, and it becomes better weighted, making twisties that much more fun. For a bulky vehicle, body roll is well controlled and in par or superior to others in the segment. Yet for all the sportiness that the large Palisade offers it still provided a comfortable ride when the local dirt roads turned into washboards.

The V6 is vibration free delivering smooth power throughout the rev range and though I did find it a tad louder than the Kia when I shut off the sat radio, the greenhouse is still very quite when compared to lesser seven and eight seaters. Push the go pedal up past the five grand mark and the V6 becomes a different animal growling through the gears as the torque kicks in and revs grow.

Towing capacity is 5000 pounds when properly equipped.

The Greenhouse

All too many SUVs are plagued with bland, hard plastic interiors. Happily the Palisade is not one of them. The airy cabin is comes dressed in a faux-suede headliner and premium leather with quilted door panels that give it a touch of luxury.

Seven USB ports should keep everyone happy.

 My seven passenger Ultimate came with ventilated second row seats, in car intercom so you can talk to third row occupants without raising your voice.

There’s 86 cu.ft. of cargo room behind the front seats. With four passengers and the third row folded you still get 46 cubes. Add more passengers into the third row and the volume shrinks to a modest 18 cubic feet, three less than the Kia because the Hyundai has power folding seats. There’s an additional cubbyhole underneath the load floor. I liked the floating center console that offered additional stowage underneath. Perfect for keeping your camera nearby when the seats are full.

Cargo volume behind the front seats is 86 cubic feet, which fit 33 carry-on suitcases in our testing. With the second row in the upright position and the third row folded, there is 46 cubic feet. Store the third row and the volume shrinks to a modest 18 cubes. Underneath the load floor, there is plenty of room to store muddy or wet items. The cubbies in the doors are tight, but there is reasonable storage within and below the floating-bridge center console.

Conclusion

You can’t review the Palisade without comparing it to the Telluride and the two are so closely matched that the final choice will more often than not be down to personal tastes on styling.  The Kia has a classic front end that would be right at home when stepping out to the opera, but the Hyundai’s shark mouthed front end gives the truck a more aggressive appearance. The rear end however is a different story, at least in my eyes.  I found the Kia’s butt busy and the Palisade cleanly executed. Both incidentally have real twin exhaust tips unlike some fakes you’ll find elsewhere.

At test’s end I found the Palisade hard to surrender. It was there in an impromptu stop to pick up an end table and coffee table for a project, and during a particularly foggy day I appreciated the seating height and large glass to see out.  Oh and for those who think that seven and eight seat SUVs suck a lot of gas, think again. During my weeklong test it only drank 9.5L/100kms of the good stuff.

Hyundai Venue: GREAT things come in small packages 

There’s been a slew of cutesy subcompact crossovers flooding the market and going after consumer dollars over the last couple of years.  Thankfully Hyundai’s latest creation, the Venue, breaks tradition. Yes it’s targeted at Millennials – what vehicle isn’t these days?  But unlike other crossovers the Venue is more butch looking than cutesy and it’s also only available in front wheel drive.

I got lucky and procured mine during a snowstorm, as evidenced by the opening photo, and it never stopped snowing during the entire week.  The Venue proved, or rather reminded me of several things, you don’t need all-wheel or four-wheel-drive to get around in the snow and you don’t need gobs of horsepower.  How did we all survive back in the day when 4x4s were for the military and your local service station plow? What the Venue did have was a set if fabulous winter tires to help it, but more on that later.

The Venue represents Hyundai’s fifth vehicle in the lucrative SUV/crossover market. It joins the Kona, Tucson, Santa Fe and Palisade making the Hyundai showroom a one stop shopping experience for all your crossover needs. At 4,040mm (159 inches) long, the Venue is shorter than its closest competitors, by 255mm (10 inches) against the pricier Nissan Kicks and 125 mm (4.95 inches) shorter than corporate sibling the Kona.

There’s a bit of give and take here, what you gain in parking space and around town maneuverability you loose in trunk space. If there is a downside to the Venue, it’s just that, the lack of cargo room behind the rears seats, a mere 18.7 cubic feet. Good news is that with the rear bench folded almost flat, it expands to 31.9 cubic feet is nearly the same as the Nissan. Unlike the Kicks, the design does allow for taller items, so again some give and take.

Egress and ingress are excellent. At six feet, I never felt crammed, even with my winter layers on. The front buckets are soft and comfortable but the rear bench is on the tight side for someone with my stature. Still I’ve seen worse. 

Unlike its swooped back competition, the boxy design gives great forward, lateral and rear visibility. Though the thick C-pillars do slightly hamper parallel parking. Yes I still look out the back and don’t use the cameras most of the time.

Four trim levels make up the Venue line up with prices staring at $17,099 for the six-speed manual tranny equipped Essential. The CVT automatic is a $1,300 option.  Entry level once meant you got a steering wheel, seats and an engine. Not any more, even the Essential comes with Bluetooth connectivity, 8” touch screen, HD/AM/FM/MP3 audio system, remote keyless entry, heated front seats, heated power side mirrors and front and rear skid plates.

The grab handle in the rear hatch ( above) may not seem like a big deal but when pricier trucks have you grasping at the outside of salt laden hatches it makes all the difference.

The Preferred adds blind spot collision and rears cross traffic warning along with lane change warning. The Trend includes a power sunroof, 17” alloys and cloth seating, drive mode selector, rear view camera, downhill brake control, remote start, heated steering wheel, LED headlights with cornering lighting My tester, the Ultimate added more driving aides, nav with MapCare support, 4-wheel disc brakes and a chrome grille.

I’m going to use the Venue’s formula and make my assessment this short and sweet and in plain simple terms. I love this thing. It does everything it’s supposed to do, take you from point A to point B comfortably, with as little effort as possible without emptying your wallet. Critics will balk at the plastic interior trim. What do you expect for under twenty grand? Hell there’s acres of plastic trim on vehicles costing two and three times as much.

 There’s a good balance between ride and handling and driving on country roads with multiple successive bumps, it feels planted and not at all jittery and for a vehicle with its dimensions, it doesn’t exhibit an overabundance of body roll either.

 The normally aspirated double overhead cam 1.6L inline four pumps out 121 horses and 113 lb.-ft. of torque. Simply put that is all you will need. Whether passing semis on the highway, plowing through half a foot of snow while climbing several grades I never felt under powered.  

Oh and did I say how easy the controls are to use! Thank you Hyundai.

I could easily see the Venue in my driveway if it had just a tad more cargo room for my business and farm needs. Sadly you can’t mix and match options these days the way you used to. My perfect Venue would have the 6-speed manual transmission with the heated steering wheel from the Trend and the Ultimate’s four-wheel disc brakes.

I suspect for most buyers there’s more than enough room behind the second row for your groceries and I know that the Venue will appeal not only to Millennial hipsters but also to older drivers who want a no nonsense vehicle that’s easy to drive, get in and out of and easy on the pocket book.

Winter tires:

As mentioned earlier, my snowy week with the Venue’s couldn’t have been as enjoyable were it not for the Pirelli Cinturato Winter tires. As you can imagine I come across a multitude of tire brands and models on all types of vehicles and with prices to match. Having a pricey tire no matter what the brand doesn’t assure you great performance. A tire that is good in the snow might fail miserably on ice and the other way around. Likewise in slushy conditions, dry roads and mix and match. Tire size is also a big factor with most cars/trucks wearing the wrong size winter boots.

 One of the most difficult areas to get even braking is on hard packed snow, you know the kind that’s still snow before it turns to ice. The Pirelli proved itself in uphill acceleration and downhill braking. I also had the chance to do a panic stop with my passenger tire on ice and the driver’s side on dry pavement, again, flawless. Climbing my driveway with six inches of snow, no sweat. The Cinturato proved itself time and time again to be worthy winter ally. You will want to equip your Venue with these tires.

Review: Riding the new Indian FTR 1200

For a brand that only relaunched five years ago, Indian Motorcycle is making some bold moves. The Scout FTR750 racebike has cleaned up in the flat track scene and Indian has now released a matching flat tracker for the street: the hotly anticipated FTR 1200.

When the FTR1200 Custom concept broke cover 18 months ago, everyone with a pulse and a love for two wheels went all giddy. And even though the production-ready FTR 1200 has been watered down by practical and regulatory considerations, it’s every bit as appealing.

It’s as if Indian have taken the classic ‘win on Sunday, sell on Monday’ approach—but that’s only half the story. The motorcycle industry is morphing, and Indian are looking to attract younger, hipper riders; riders that want a slice of Americana, but have no interest in cruisers or baggers. (And yes, they’re obviously riding the wave of flat track racing‘s popularity, too.)

It’s also no secret that the American cruiser market is struggling. But Indian has seen significant growth in Europe—so the FTR 1200 is a bid to appeal to a wider audience, and pitched directly at European motorcycles.

Does it succeed? Does the FTR 1200 look half as good in real life as it does in photos? And does it go as good as it looks? I headed to LA for a day of Californian canyon carving to find out.

Even when parked up, there’s a lot to like about the FTR 1200. It’s closer to a full-on flat tracker than any other production bike out there. Indian very wisely parked it next to their FTR750 racer at the launch, and the shared DNA is unmistakable.

The FTR comes in three flavors: The $13,499 base model (above), the S version at $15,499, and the ‘S Race Replica’ at $16,999. The S is the benchmark and comes in two colors (below right): the base model sacrifices a number of features and comes in plain black, while the Race Replica adds Akrapovič cans, race replica paint and a red frame (below left).

All three share the same chassis, and the same liquid-cooled, 1,203 cc 60-degree V-twin motor. Numbers are respectable; 123 hp at 8,250 rpm, and 120 Nm of torque at 5,900 rpm. Power is handled by a slip assist clutch, a six-speed transmission and chain drive.

The S models also get a TFT touchscreen display, traction control and three switchable riding modes: rain, standard and sport. And they have additional rider aids like stability and wheelie control. The base model has an analog clock, no traction control, and no riding modes. Its fueling is equivalent to ‘standard’ mode on the S bikes.

All three models share the same Sachs suspension; 43 mm inverted forks and a mono-shock, with 150 mm of travel front and back. Both ends are fully adjustable for preload, rebound and compression on the S models, but on the base model, you only get preload and rebound adjustment at the back. Nothing up front.

The ten-spoke alloy wheels are a perfect compromise between flat track style and day-to-day practicality: a 19” up front, with an 18” out back. (The 18” rear offers a wider tire selection than a 19” would.) They’re wrapped in Dunlop DT3Rs—road-ready versions of Dunlop’s popular DT3 dirt track tires, developed in collaboration with Indian for the FTR.

Rounding out the impressive parts spec are Brembo brakes, with twin 320 mm discs up front. ABS is standard on all models, but on the S it utilizes a six-axis IMU, and is switchable.

Everything’s packaged in a steel trellis frame, with an aluminum subframe. And it’s one hella clean package too. From the cable routing on the handlebars to a distinct lack of visible plugs and gadgets on either side of the motor, Indian’s design team went to great lengths to keep things as tidy as possible.

It’s quite a compact design too. The airbox sits right on top of the throttle bodies to improve airflow, with the 13-liter fuel tank dipping down under the seat. So the faux tank you see up top is really just a set of plastic covers, with a shape that mimics the FTR750’s tank flawlessly.

The FTR 1200 has a premium feel, right down to the paint. The base model’s black is a straight-up gloss black, but all three S bikes have a deep flake that’s just stunning when the sun hits it. And the Race Replica is a dead ringer for the race bike, with multi-colored flake in the black paint that’s downright hypnotic.

The FTR 1200 does stray a little from the look of the FTR1200 Custom prototype. But according to the Indian product team at the launch, this was unavoidable. That concept had a one-gallon fuel tank, no airbox, an uncomfortable seat, and a high exhaust that ran hot—making it impossible to homologate and sell.

Still, there’s a lot to love on the FTR 1200. The LED lights at both ends look great, especially the taillight, which even has a subtle Indian script logo in it. I don’t even hate the chunky dual exhausts—though I will say that the Akrapovič option looks miles better, and the catalytic convertor lurking under the bike is an eyesore.

But it’s only when you swing a leg over the FTR 1200 that you realize just how much thought went into its development. Indian has absolutely nailed the ergonomics. It starts with the beefy ProTaper handlebars: they have a flat track feel to them, but the measurements are more suited to street riding.

The foot pegs are ever so slightly back from mid, and titled a touch forward. Combined with the seat height and bar position, it makes for a rider triangle that hits the sweet spot between comfort and control. Oh, and the seat is remarkably cushy too—even for a full day of riding.

The cockpit area is a letdown though. The TFT display on the S models is hit and miss—it packs a lot of information into an easy-to-read package, but the display itself is a lot smaller than the physical enclosure, and the graphics aren’t particularly great.

On the positive side, the touchscreen works great, and the unit has a lot of functionality—like the ability to interface with your phone and Bluetooth comms. But it’s also tricky to navigate.

There are three buttons on the switchgear, and three buttons on the display itself—some of which do the same thing. Switching modes means hitting one button to flick the display to the next screen, then either using the touchscreen or the joystick (which is on the other side of the bars) to pick your mode. (Oh, and you can’t switch traction control and ABS off independently.)

To be honest, I far prefer the analog clock on the basic FTR. Plus, the actual handlebar switches are incredibly dinky too, and the grips look and feel cheap. Which is a downer when compared the level of finish everywhere else on the FTR.

Can you look past these niggles when you’re out on the road? Absolutely. Indian took us on a route that lead out of Santa Monica along the Pacific Coast Highway, and into the twisty hills above Malibu for some spirited canyon riding.

I spent most of my time on the S model, and it was bags of fun in the canyons—as soon as I got used to a couple of things. I applaud Indian for being brave enough to put street-legal flat track tires on the FTR, but it took me half of the day’s riding to get along with them.

I’m not sure if they just suck when they’re cold, or if I’m just not used to the way they behave, but there’s little to no feedback from the Dunlops. By lunchtime I’d figured them out, and realized I could push them a lot harder than I thought—and from a style perspective, they’re perfect.

The 19F/18R wheel combo is not as sharp as a set of 17s would be, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It just makes for a different ride characteristic. Its compactness also belies how heavy it is. At 222 kg dry the FTR 1200 is several kilos heavier than the BMW R nineT, which is 208 dry and 220 full fueled. It’s a lot heftier than it looks.

To put this into perspective with other roadsters with sporting pretensions, the Ducati Monster 1200 is a mere 185 kilos dry, and the Triumph Speed Twin is 196 kg.

Luckily the FTR 1200 carries its weight well, with the low fuel tank helping to centralize mass. But it does mean that you need to manhandle it—rather than simply flick it—through corners.

The spot-on ergonomics help muscle it from turn to turn, and once you’re pitched over, it holds its line like it’s on rails. With the right kind of riding style, and plenty of body English, the FTR’s capable of setting a fast pace.

Thanks to solid suspension and brakes, it doesn’t get bent out of shape too easily either. Those Brembos are sharp and predictable, and the suspension felt dialed out of the box, even on shoddier road surfaces. (With extra room for adjustment, expert riders should be able to fine-tune it to perfection too).

Twisting the throttle will remind you that you’re riding a chunky American V-twin. There’s a lot of torque, but the throttle’s snatchy—even more so when you switch it into ‘sport’ mode. The FTR 1200 gets enough power down to keep you entertained, but current emissions controls have it sounding a little bunged up (even with the optional Akrapovič units).

The slipper clutch is feather light, and shifts from the six-speed box are rock solid. I’ve been riding a lot of bikes with quick-shift systems lately, and immediately missed it on the FTR—but Indian’s people assured me it’s on their radar.

All in all, the FTR 1200 will give as much back as you’re willing to put in. Whack the throttle, trust the tires and throw your weight into it, and it’ll respond. Even the base model FTR is a hoot to ride, and might just be the ticket for riders that want a simpler bike, and don’t need to fuss with suspension settings.

The FTR’s biggest win though, is what it signals for Indian. It’s a far cry from a cruiser or a bagger, but doesn’t sacrifice one iota of the brand’s heritage. Think of it as American muscle, with a European twist.

As for customization, Indian have launched four accessory packs alongside the FTR 1200. But in my opinion, they add too much fluff to what is essentially a super-clean bike, as OEM offerings go. I reckon customers are more likely to pick and choose individual pieces (like the carbon fiber body panels in the ‘Sport’ kit).

I asked Indian’s VP of Industrial Design, Greg Brew, how much room for pukka custom work there is, and he reckons there’s a lot. He has a point too—at the end of the day, the FTR has good bones, and in the right hands we could see some exciting builds come out of the woodwork.

He also mentioned that they’d been playing with a few configurations in-house, but wouldn’t get into specifics. What’s clear though, is that the FTR hints at a whole new platform for Indian, rather than just a one-off.

It’s also carving out its own niche. Its closest competitors in capacity and price are the BMW R nineT, Triumph Speed Triple or Ducati Monster, but none of those are quite the same bike. And Harley-Davidson’s product line is woefully missing anything that could compete.

And that’s really the FTR 1200’s biggest selling point. There’s nothing else like it.
