Yay TMA22!
Poor Martin (though one hell of an entrance, bursting into Jon’s office and dumping a load of worms on his desk) saying Jon can vouch for the soundness of his mind and Jon dodging the question.
Jon is not comforting at the beginning, dismisses most statements as lies and mental problems, and being quite sharp with Martin.
Martin saying he didn’t want to come back to Jon without due diligence - he’s learned that lesson - he’s obviously had a telling off from Jon before - so he breaks in!
At the beginning you’d assume Jon will end up telling Martin he’s been ridiculous, he’s made the whole thing up, maybe he should see psychiatrist or maybe implying Martin is covering up for skiving off.
Over and over again it’s implied that Martin kept pushing and going back because he didn’t want to let Jon down and Jon had already made it clear Martin was a disappointment to him - more guilt for Jon. Maybe some realisation of how badly he’s been treating Martin - although he did phone Martin. Over and over again, he says, he called Martin and got no answer. Just the texts. For all Jon’s dismissal of Martin, he did reach out.
I just imagine Jon intently watching Martin and seeing his face and his gestures and realising it’s all true and Martin was and is in danger and also, probably to Jon’s surprise, realising this is unacceptable to him.
And this is a turning point for Jon and Martin. Jon believes him. Jon gives him a safe space, right where Jon can keep an eye on him. In fact, it’s Jon’s own bed in the archive. He goes out of his way to keep Martin safe and assure Martin he will be safe. All this much to Martin’s surprise..:
Jane Prentiss sends a message saying ‘Keep him’ and Jon’s reaction is ‘yes, I think I will’
And when I first started listening - I knew there was a JonMartin ship, I didn’t get it until this episode
