Once Lord Christopher Coorthopp, an aristocratic vampire in late 17th century England, The Master was cursed by a witch in 1706 to take the form of a “biting fly.” Starting again from the ground up (quite literally) The Master refused to abandon his past. He learned to use his now dampened vampire powers, combined with the speed and tenacity of a horsefly, to become just a downright menace to both human and fly society. After a couple centuries as London’s lesser-known cryptid, he learned that the “Queen of Horseflies” lived in North America. And so, as vampires are often wont to do, The Master stowed away on a boat to America. While there, he located the queen, murdered her while staging it as a peaceful relinquishing of the throne, and has been hidden away in a fly-built castle somewhere in the salt marshes of the Delaware Bay ever since.
Since taking over the Horsefly Kingdom, The Master has organized the once solitary insects into The Swarm, and elected the queen’s former bodyguard, Bruce, as the new horsefly army’s general. It is yet unknown what he plans to do with his newly militarized kingdom…
On the surface, The Master is charming, friendly, and a bit of a goof. As The Master is rarely without a sleepy smile on his face, it seems to most outsiders that Bruce is the one actually running the show. As far as anyone knows, The Master is the charisma, while Bruce is the brains.
And The Master prefers to keep up that facade.
Actually conniving and sadistic, the bloated horsefly spends most of his time bossing Bruce around, hunting, and doing his darndest to get under people’s skin, both metaphorically and physically. When he’s not secretly eating other bugs (including his own subjects) The Master likes to return to his roots: luring humans deeper into the marsh with his charms (and an odd knowledge of human drugs), for either The Swarm to drain dry or to satiate his own lust for violence. Combining the speed of a vampire and the speed of a horsefly, The Master is able to shoot straight through humans like a living bullet… so unfortunately the witch that cursed him didn’t fully incapacitate him.
She just made him smaller.

A Rare Bruce Out of Uniform
(I wanted to add some rain too but then I remembered that he is a fly and rain is large and scary to flies lol)

Listen y’all, sometimes you gotta just draw a bunch of random goofy stuff to distract you from The Horrors

I still haven’t had the chance to see the ~Bruce Movie~ but I felt like I had to draw this now as I don’t anticipate Renfield 2023 still being relevant by the time Halloween comes around 😅

Whelp here we are. Folks in my Instagram stories voted for #TheMasterHorsefly to be the last character I draw as different (anthro) animals, as well as which animals to draw him as! I also took the chance to use some of the fancy outfits I don’t normally get to put him in 🙃

I’ve been drawing nothing but dinosaurs and anatomical charts for a month straight and I needed to warm up so I can remember how to draw characters again. My entomology professor compared horsefly antennae to little mittens so. Here’s this I guess.

Happy Lunar New Year! Time to continue my tradition of drawing my characters as their Chinese zodiac signs and apparently since it’s the year of the tiger that means… Master tiger.
This was a struggle, ya’ll. Apologies to all the tigers out there…
(Also btw, I had originally drawn Ozzy as the rat for 2020 but after considering it and reshuffling some birthdates I’ve come to the conclusion that he’s actually a rabbit. Just uh. Fyi for next year)
