What awaits are songs of outlaws (“Pretty Boy Floyd,” “Life In Prison”) and natural beauty (“Hickory Wind,” “Blue Canadian Rockies”) sweetened by the pleasure of the pedal steel guitar. Hearing Parsons, McGuinn and Hillman play country music with rock sensibilities is a revelation. It’s not hyperbole to say that the New Riders of the Purple Sage, the Eagles and the entire country-rock genre owe a deep debt of gratiitude to the groundbreaking work of Gram Parsons and The Byrds. In a very real sense, Sweetheart of the Rodeo opened the floodgates for country music to mix with rock and roll ( Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead and other psychedelic acts would soon follow suit). It’s the most “normal” album they’ve ever recorded and yet, at the same time, the most daring thing they’ve ever done. The Byrds unplug their instruments, disconnect from the drug scene (musically, not personally) and play country music without a trace of irony. The Dylan parallels are interesting here, as I keep coming back to the shock that listeners felt when Dylan and his band plugged in electric instruments Sweetheart of the Rodeo is the inverse of that. As for Roger McGuinn, who seems to have abdicated the leadership role (I never saw the band as having a leader to begin with), his versions of Bob Dylan’s “You Ain’t Going Nowhere” and “Nothing Was Delivered” may be the album’s most obvious links to the past. Byrds fans, however, were unprepared for an entire album of country classics complete with pedal steel guitar, fiddle, banjo and mandolin. Chris Hillman’s roots were in folk music and, as a Christian, songs such as “I Am A Pilgrim,” “The Christian Life” and Woody Guthrie’s “Pretty Boy Floyd” were likely already familiar to him. Of course, there was always the undercurrent of folk/country in the music of The Byrds, but we never knew how deep those waters ran until Rodeo arrived. By turning their back on their psychedelic past, The Byrds helped to create a new genre of music: country-rock. Calling this album a “complete reinvention” or “radical departure from the past” doesn’t capture the shock of hearing Sweetheart of the Rodeo for the first time. Gram Parsons didn’t join The Byrds, he hijacked them. Think Bob Dylan’s electric revelation, but in reverse.

Album Review: Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman with Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives - Sweetheart of the Rodeo 50th Anniversary - Live

Recruiting Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives to back them on their Sweetheart of the Rodeo 50th Anniversary tour wasn’t the only stroke of genius Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman had in 2019.

Once on stage, the former Byrds wisely bookended the 1969 LP - recorded with temporary Byrd Gram Parsons and widely considered to mark the birth of country-rock - with such songs as “My Back Pages,” “Wasn’t Born to Follow,” “I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better” and others and made no effort recreate the album. Instead, they played the songs as they would sound many decades down the pike and allowed Stuart & His Fab Supes to play like themselves.

As such, the band adds some extra country flavor to such songs as “Mr. Spaceman” and “Mr. Tambourine Man,” while proving themselves proper psychedelic warriors on “Eight Miles High” and injecting a touch of rock ’n’ roll attitude to Sweetheart of the Rodeo tracks like “Nothing Was Delivered” and “You’re Still on My Mind.”

That’s not to say they bastardize the Sweetheart - because they don’t. But it is to say they present it in a purely in-the-moment fashion that’s captured beautifully on Sweetheart of the Rodeo 50th Anniversary - Live. As it goes, performing a landmark album such as Sweetheart when it’s a half-century in the rearview has no business working so well.

The audience goes fairly bonkers when the phantom album ends on “I am a Pilgrim” and their enthusiasm continues when the hybridized Super-Byrds launch brilliantly into “So You Want to be a Rock N Roll Star.”

McGuinn and Hillman emcee the show, telling short stories about the songs to present what McGuinn calls “the back pages” of Sweetheart, and allowing Stuart to take over the stage on “A Satisfied Mind.” The 25 songs fly by in 80 minutes providing a stupendous document to those who attended the tour and a robust you-screwed-up-buddy to those who did not.

Gram’s vocals transform the song. The mix of pain and exuberance in his voice suggest a deeper meaning to the lyric than perhaps even Haggard realized. Haggard’s version is a straightforward prison lament:

My life will be a burden every day

If I could die my pain might go away

Over Hillman’s old school walking bass line, Earl Ball’s deranged whorehouse piano, and Jay Dee Maness’ spacey theremin-like steel lines, Gram finds increasing release in the bleak lyrics. He briefly turns into a prep-school boy with his English “rawther” pronunciation, but roars back in full voice to change the song’s meaning in the final verse. When Gram sings “My life will be a burden every day”, it’s clear that at age twenty-two he has cut to the heart of country music’s inescapable pain. It’s the pain of self-loathing, the prison of being inside of one’s head when one’s own head offers no kind of refuge. Gram turns “Life in Prison” into Samuel Beckett: The life that burdens him is his own, the prison his identity. The only release is death: “If I could die, my pain might go away.” - David N.
