All other version of Ken would NEVER but of course this version of Ken would. Of COURSE he would because he’s been treated how little girls treat Ken, not how Barbie Brand treats Ken in the Barbie Animated Cinematic Universe/Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse. Barbie Brand treats Ken with the respect and love that he give back to Barbie + co. in spades meanwhile little girls are treating Ken like how they want to treat boys, playing out what they THINK should be happening (a romantic little aside between Barbie and Ken) but then tossing Ken away because they don’t ACTUALLY care about that sort of thing. And often girls will have this underpinning of resentment towards their Kens too, because they see men mistreating women everywhere around them in the home and in the street and in media and they might not actually understand it but they still are sensitive to it. That insecurity is the girl’s own insecurities reflected back, more so than it reflects back on any Barbie doll, because Ken is who she can marginalize just like she herself is being marginalized.

since the barbie movie brainrot is getting to me, have some
ben reilly x reader headcanons (when you go to watch the barbie movie)
btw spoilers for the barbie movie under the cut !!
Tumblr media
when you came up to him, asking him if he'd like to watch the barbie movie with you, he'd perk up a little from his 'moping pillar' and think about it, but he'd go back to facing it while telling you, "i got no time to watch some silly dolls movie, babe... i have real things to do and think about, not watch a bunch of dolls come to life."
you'd nod sarcastically and tease him about wanting to see it for ryan gosling because "blonde himbo men are your type", you'd say while side eyeing him with a sly smile as he perks up at those first three words.
"o-on second thought... i'm your blond himbo men. i'll go, but not because you asked me to."
he'd grumble a little and ask what's so good about the barbie movie, and you'd argue, "because it's barbie!" and he'd groan as he stomps his feet and trudges behind you, grumbling, "oh please, you just wanna see it for ryan gosling, i'm already right here for you, babe."
as you two are watching the first few minutes of the movie, by the time you get to the first song, HE'D BE VIBING ALONG AND SWINGING HIS HEAD TO THE MUSIC
"you're vibing" "huh? no, no, i... i'm shifting in my seat, is all" "but you're smiling and swaying to the beat" "i just have a major itch in my butt right now, okay, babe?" "sureeeee"
the minute you saw ryan gosling in the beach scene and feigned simping over him, like shielding your eyes from him as you smiled widely, or fanned yourself and muttered some words under your breath, he'd watch you and fold his arms in front of his chest and scoff.
"i can do that, i have more abs than he does, watch," he says as he readies to take his hoodie thing off him, BUT YOU STOP HIM IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE YOU TWO ARE IN A PUBLIC THEATER
"i just wanna prove to you he's got nothing on me! you don't need a ken, you have a ben! me! i'm your ben!" he says as his voice rises a little, irritating the people around you two, and you have never been more embarrassed in your entire life 😭😭😭
"okay, okay, you have lovely abs, benny, now keep them under your hoo--" "so you like me more than ken?" "...yes, i like you more than ke--" "do you love me more than ken?" "of course!" "well, kiss me to prove it. come on, babe." you sighed, shook your head, and he keeps pestering you for kisses, but you cover his face with your hand as he puckers up and leans closer towards you :>
IN THE SCENE WHERE KEN IS ONLY HAVING A GOOD DAY WHEN BARBIE NOTICES HIM, YOU LAUGH A LITTLE BECAUSE THAT SCENE IS ALL TOO FAMILIAR TO YOUUUUU
"why's it funny?" "oh, nothing, nothing, it's just... i know that all too well." "what do you mean, you don't know any kens, do you know any kens? i'll challenge them to a flex off." "no, benny, i don't know any kens." "well good, because i'm sure if you knew any, they'd--" "hush now, the movie's getting good." "dammit, you like ryan gosling more than me." (he says that as he puts his hoodie up and pulls the drawstrings and crosses his arms over his chest LMAO)
AND IN THE SCENE WHERE KEN TRIES TO KISS BARBIE BUT DOESN'T ACTUALLY KISS HER AND PULLS AWAY SATISFIED, YOU CHUCKLE AND LOOK AT BEN, AND HE LOOKS AT YOU, "why's that funny?" "because you used to do that when you were asking me out, remember?" (he does not remember, or pretends not to) "well i always get a kiss in the end, unlike ken over here. what a crappy name, anyway." "it's close to yours." "hey! leave my name out of this, hmph... ben's the best name in the world. second to yours, of course--" "hmm?" "nothing!"
during that one scene where ken's wearing the long sleeved clothing that said something along the lines of "i'm kenough", he'd be tearing up during the context of that scene and mumbles, "i'm benough..." "that you are, benny. you are benough."
out of the two of you, ben would come out crying, but he'd mask it as his usual brooding state and claim he just had some dust in his eyes. "in a theater?" "y-yeah... the pink p... powder fr-from the p-p-popcorn ente... red my e-eyes." "benny, it's completely okay to cry... like how barbie told ken..." you'd tell him as you hold his arm and caress his bicep, AND HE LETS OUT ALL HIS PENT UP EMOTIONS AND SADNESS ON YOU FROM THE MOVIE RIGHT THEN AND THERE, GUSHING ABOUT HOW HAPPY HE WAS FOR KEN FINDING WHO HE WAS WITHOUT BARBIE AND HOW BARBIE BECAME HUMAN.......
he loved it. and bought a barbie doll that looked like you, and you bought a ken doll that looked like him to match :>
a/n: i have so much more for him in store I SWEAR

People be calling the Barbie movie "anti-man" as if "I'm Just Ken" isn't the most pro-man song ever recorded.
Yeah I think it's just kinda clear that the people who say "what about men" when it comes to feminism don't actually want to know "what about men". Men having to fit ideals they don't always want but have to uphold isn't good for anyone. In What Was I Made For there's a line "I'm sad again, don't tell my boyfriend, It's not what he's made for" which definitely felt for me like a criticism of how men aren't allowed to be emotional or be in touch with their feelings due to the same cultural ideals that put women down.
Having cultural ideals that hurt one group hurt everyone in the long term. I think the movie definitely cared about men and was very thoughtful in that respect. People who are saying that it's anti-men or whatever totally missed that men are also negatively effected by these cultural ideals and they're often lost in mental health research and can't get diagnosed with anxiety and depression as easily. Honestly I think the people who are saying this don't care about men, they just care about the idea of men. People aren't ideas!!!

Everything in the Barbie movie broke me. It was amazing. Everything it had to say was so powerful. About gender roles. About the minority. About discovering who you are and your worth. About growing to love yourself, despite your flaws. About being human.
But why did “What’s Barbie’s ending?” “Barbie’s in love with Ken.” “I don’t love Ken.” break me the most.

Barbie movie spoilers!!!
*******************************
Something about Barbie being both filed with emotion and numbness and crying for the first time over the complexities of humanity and earth and the beauty of aging really did a number on me. It’s the acknowledgement and acceptance of change and life and death and the constant challenges of being human. Ate

okay so i knew to prepare myself for how hard the Barbie movie would hit on the “growing up as a woman” side, but I was NOT prepared for certain feelings and emotions that the beginning of Ken’s arc being Seen And Respected By Other Men For Simply Being A Fellow Man For The First Real Time Ever would hit on the transmasc side.
also. I may be slightly ashamed at how literally EVERY and I mean EVERY outfit scumbag!era Ken wore ticked all my fuckcing buttons 🥵🥵🥵
Alright alright hot Ken jokes aside that was. TRULY a phenomenal movie. Everything I expected and more. So worth going to see.
and I REAAAALLY really wish I could’ve afforded to cosplay now T.T They may have taken his cockring away for the movie, but he was still THERE damnit!!! My boy earring magic Ken was THERE!!!

This is just a detail I noticed now, rewatching the Barbie movie but when ken runs forward and bounces off of the wave he flips in the air the way a kid would show someone flying through the air (with lots of flips and way too much air time) I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!

men criticizing the barbie movie for being ‘anti man’, is so funny to me, because the whole movie they are just treating the kens like women in men’s media/irl

I will say. I wish I had gotten to see More. Wanted to see BarbieLand with the new changes to their society. Were all Kens just sorta homeless before these changes? Did the Barbies band together to provide housing for them? Does Ken get his dojo casa house back on a smaller scale?
Unrelated, but. Justice for Earring Magic/Cock Ring Ken. Give his cock ring back.
I do love seeing Barbie and Ken as a couple, but it's neat that they changed it up with Ken having an unreciprocated crush on her. It was interesting to show that she was quick to brush him off and tell him to go, and he was like a lost puppy, afraid to leave her alone (he's very dependent on her for his own sense of identity before he discovers and reads about the patriarchy of the Real World). And she is apologetic for how she treated him and he is encouraged to figure out who he wants to be without her, which is what he needed so badly.
I ADORE that the person Barbie was connected to was Gloria, because you can see that she was very drawn to her even before the actual Reveal. And she reminisces about her time with Barbie and her memories-- it's so sweet and reminds me of when I dig up memories from my own childhood. I kinda wish there had been more with Gloria and Barbie. They already have great moments together during the climax/turning point of the movie, but I just like them a lot. They're sweet. The beloved childhood toy giving inspiration to Gloria, and in turn, she gives inspiration to Barbie.
I think the best moment (or the scene that I liked most) in the movie is when Barbie is looking around at people just living their lives outside, kids, young people, couples, middle-aged people. They're playing, laughing, talking, thinking, struggling, and Barbie is picking up and feeling these emotions with these people she doesn't even know. And then finally she fixates on the old woman sitting next to her at the bus stop. And Barbie is so in awe of this woman and tells her she's beautiful and the woman says she knows. And they smile and laugh. I don't know why exactly I love this scene so much, I think it's just like... it's so clear that Barbie loves humanity.
And then the ending. Barbie is human. Imagination. Life is your creation. Real. She is a dreamer, making ideas. She is no longer just an idea.

not me imagining ben reilly getting himself a "i am kenough" hoodie after you guys watch the barbie movie and him replacing the 'k' with a 'b', so it spells, "i am benough".
he wears that to comfort himself when miguel, jess, peter b or anyone else accidentally hurts his ego or makes him wanna cry 😭😭😭
you usually catch him crying on y'all's bed (i heard he was 26 so this shouldn't be weird, should it..........) the same way ken did in the movie, and after y'all watched the barbie movie, he just sniffles to you as you comfort him,
"I'M JUST BEN, I AM... I AM BENOUGH..."
then he keeps crying until you tell him how benough he is, how great he really is, how much you love him and everything about him. "even my... even my harrowing memories of the past?" "yes, benny, even your harrowing memories of the past." (he only believes you when you say it that way)

Probably only time I bought a movie ticket and that is for The Barbie Movie premiere in my country and I must say it's worth the money.
Major spoilers ahead in the keep reading link. Don't click if you haven't watch it yet.
-At first, I thought that this movie would be sorta like Barbie and Ken being a duo of dolls living undercover in the real world and Mattel would like chase them down which it sorta does for a bit. It was until when Ken went back to the Barbieland and take over Barbieland with the ideas of patriarchy from the Real World where I was like "Oh, shit... Ken, you traitor."
-I knew Ken is going to be sorta trouble but I didn't expect this type of "take over Barbieland" trouble from him jsdfhglkjhdfskljhfd. Legit though like cowboy shit is the least likely stuff I would expect for a Kendom but anyway.
-Anyway, loving all of the Barbie history references because I love history of anything I love and this movie is filled with it. LIKE HELLO MAGIC EARRING KEN? MITCH? ALAN, KEN'S BESTIE? Also I love how every single non specific Barbie and Ken or not Barbie's friends are called Barbie and Ken. So fun that I legit ended up calling a bunch of people my age Barbies.
-Also, the mom and the kid who helped Barbie restore Barbieland are so aaaaa.
-AND RUTH? THE WOMAN WHO CREATED BARBIE? Meta ass shit right here.

I might be thinking too deeply about the Barbie movie and also I missed the first five minutes but my main question is if Barbieland represents all the Barbies being played with, then what happens when they are not being played with? Do they still have the best day ever every day? We know Margot Robbie Barbie started having existential thoughts because the mom started playing with her daughter’s old barbies, which presumably haven’t been played with in a long while. Was Margot Robbie Barbie in a perpetual state of play based on the last time her daughter played with her? Or was she just in a state of limbo, not alive and not dead, not moving and interacting with the other Barbies because she wasn’t being played with at all? Then when the mom started playing with her, she came alive again as though nothing had happened? And she didn’t realize that so much time had passed because she does not age, and therefore it felt like no time passed at all?
Just ignore all this if it was explained in the first five minutes of the movie.

I was complaining about not having any 2000s barbies, but then I found her.
Tumblr media
I found her at goodwill a couple years ago and forgot I had her to be honest. Was she part of the fairytopia line?
Anyway, I've seen people post on tiktok about finding their emotional support barbie after watching the barbie movie and i might go to target tomorrow to find another barbie. Maybe one that looks like me. Honestly, I want a barbie from one of the old movies because their outfits are gorgeous. Sometimes I wish I didn't give my barbies away.
