drawing character reference sheet for other people to use: “just do whatever you like, even the colors or markings don’t have to be exact!”
making character reference sheets for my own personal use: “If I don’t get the shapes and proportions right i will die”

concepts for where my character The Botanist stays while studying the plant life of the Isle of Vylk. It used to be an old explorer's house, but it's pretty dilapidated now. backgrounds are hard. also a map of Vylk with just some of the notes The Botanist has made on it.

An assortment of Griffolk villagers. As cubs they start out with spotted down, then slowly grow manes as they enter into adulthood. Manes are present in both sexes and it can be hard to tell the two apart. The only way to tell visually being that females end up slightly taller and their plumage a bit more vibrant. Both sexes rear hatchlings and provide food. They come in many colors, usually soft, warm pastels, but cooler variations in plumage aren’t uncommon. Adults often adorn themselves with bits of a gem-like coral they find in the sea and fashion into jewelry or tools. Though omnivorous, their staple food is the abundance of fish in Vylk’s reefs. The majority of the island’s animals and plants don’t readily lend themselves to domestication, thus they have become seafarers.

This is Ranu, a villager on the isle of Vylk. She’s part of a species I’ve been calling the Griffolk for a while now, but really they’re just lion-chickens. She acts as an ambassador for her people to the botanist as he studies the island’s vegetation. She’s very knowledgeable about the wildlife of her home, an excellent hunter, and an incurable prankster.

sorry for uploading so many of the same images lately. i decided to just do a full reference of this character for myself. i don't think i’ve ever done a proper character turnaround before and wow, keeping consistent proportions is hard..!! it’s not something ive been very conscious about before in my art. there’s still a lot of stuff in this design that is pretty nonsensical (their dumb anime hair and tail i refuse to give up) but im very fond of it, stylistically. i created this boy in 2014 and im still very attached to him....but..still nO NAME..
