AU-gust 2020 - Prompt 5: Post-Apocalypse AU
I love AUs, so I will fill some of the prompts for the @augustwritingchallenge. Most of these will be short stories in my typical style.
AU-gust masterpost.
I didn’t have a good idea for this, but my husband said I should go solarpunk.
Fandom: Dragon Age, Words: 443
Gen background Solas x Iwyn Lavellan | Solarpunk AU | gen Rating: Gen. Varric, Self-sufficiency, what are the Wardens doing, thirst, unanswered questions, slice of life.
Friends
“My friend has sent a message. She says she has some information, about the Wardens.”
“Hmm.”
Cassandra leans on her garden hoe, and looks at Varric suspiciously.
“She needs a place to hide, along with some of her friends. My friends too, all good people. Promise.”
“It’s Hawke right? Isn’t she part of the problem? She was there, when the refinery got blown up.”
“You ask too many questions, Cassandra. And does it really matter now? Would you turn away someone in need?”
Cassandra sighs.
“You’re right, Varric.”
She shades her eyes with her hand, and glares at the too-hot sun. She picks up her hoe, and forcefully hacks away at the weeds. Varric fiddles with his shirt.
“Are you going to help, or do you have more to say?”
“You see – they’ll be here in a few hours.”
Cassandra straightens again, and makes some sort of annoyed sound.
“We better go tell the others.”
They walk across the floor of Skyhold’s courtyard, through the little gardens there. Tomatoes, beans, peas, basil, and more. They can manage here, without much from Outside.
At the entrance, they split, Cassandra will start with Leliana and Josephine, and Varric sets off in search of Iwyn.
He finds Bull first, working with Krem and Dalish on the well.
“Iwyn came by with lemonade earlier. Real sweet.” He gestures towards the picnic table in the shade, with three empty glasses. “She went to find Solas on the tower. Probably hasn’t moved on.”
Varric makes his way up the stairs, the sides abundant with greenery, and up to the ladder leaning against one of the towers, the one newly repaired.
“Heights. Almost as bad as depths,” he mutters, and climbs up.
There are rows of gleaming black solar cells on the roof, and tools spread around where the last rows are being installed. Iwyn has put down her tray of glasses (Varric has no idea how she got it up the ladder), and wipes the sweat of Solas’ brow. He is shirtless, and Iwyn’s other hand is almost improper.
“Sorry, sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt your little makeout session. I’ve some news.”
Iwyn laughs, and Solas blushes.
Thom Rainer pops up behind a row of solar panels, sweating as well, but not shirtless.
“You mean Solas and mine secret tryst?”
Varric holds up his hands.
“I’ll pass no judgement!”
“What’s the news, Varric?” Iwyn asks.
“A friend of mine is going to come later today. You’ll want to meet her. She has some information about the Wardens.”
“Thanks, Varric. We will be there.” Iwyn sighs and leans against Solas. “Looks like Outside might not be done with us.”
