If you're in the mood for contemporary novels this summer, we've got you covered! Here are six contemporary YA novels that are out in July and August. Which ones will you be adding to your TBR list?
Boys I Know by Anna Garcia Peachtree Teen
*A high school senior navigates messy boys and messier relationships in this bitingly funny and much-needed look into the overlap of Asian American identity and teen sexuality.*
June Chu is the “just good enough” girl. Good enough to line the shelves with a slew of third-place trophies and steal secret kisses from her AP Bio partner, Rhys. But not good enough to meet literally any of her Taiwanese mother’s unrelenting expectations or to get Rhys to commit to anything beyond a well-timed joke.
While June’s mother insists she follow in her (perfect) sister’s footsteps and get a (full-ride) violin scholarship to Northwestern (to study pre-med), June doesn’t see the point in trying too hard if she’s destined to fall short anyway. Instead, she focuses her efforts on making her relationship with Rhys “official.” But after her methodically-planned, tipsily-executed scheme explodes on the level of a nuclear disaster, she flings herself into a new relationship with a guy who’s not allergic to the word “girlfriend.”
But as the line between sex and love blurs, and pressure to map out her entire future threatens to burst, June will have to decide on whose terms she’s going to live her life—even if it means fraying her relationship with her mother beyond repair. -- Cover image and summary via Goodreads

Twice as Perfect by Louisa Onomé Feiwel & Friends
The only things worth doing are those that will lead to success.
For seventeen-year-old Adanna Nkwachi, life is all about duty: to school and the debate team, to her Nigerian parents, and even to her cousin Genny as Ada helps prepare Genny’s wedding to Afrobeats superstar Skeleboy (“Skeleboy me, Skeleboy this money, everything na Skeleboy…that Skeleboy!”). Because ever since her older brother, Sam, had a fight with their parents a few years ago and disappeared, somebody has to fill the void he left behind. Ada may never know what caused Sam to leave home, but the one thing she’s certain of is that it’s on her to make sure her parents’ sacrifices aren’t in vain.
One day, chance brings the siblings back together. Although she fears how their parents will react if they find out she and Sam are back in touch, Ada’s determined to get answers about the night Sam left—Sam, who was supposed to be an engineer but is now, what, a poet? The more she learns about Sam’s poetry, the more Ada begins to wonder if maybe her own happiness is just as important as doing what’s expected of her. Amid parental pressure, anxiety over the debate competition, a complicated love life, and the Nigerian wedding-to-end-all-weddings, can Ada learn, just this once, to put herself first? -- Cover image and summary via Goodreads
How You Grow Wings by Rimma Onoseta Algonquin Young Readers
Sisters Cheta and Zam couldn’t be more different. Cheta, sharp-tongued and stubborn, never shies away from conflict—either at school or at home, where her mother fires abuse at her. Timid Zam escapes most of her mother’s anger, skating under the radar and avoiding her sister whenever possible. In a turn of good fortune, Zam is invited to live with her aunt’s family in the lap of luxury. Jealous, Cheta also leaves home, but finds a harder existence that will drive her to terrible decisions. When the sisters are reunited, Zam alone will recognize just how far Cheta has fallen—and Cheta’s fate will rest in Zam’s hands.
Debut author Rimma Onoseta deftly explores classism, colorism, cycles of abuse, how loyalty doesn’t always come attached to love, and the messy truths that sometimes family is not a source of comfort and that morality is all shades of gray. -- Cover image and summary via Goodreads
This Is Why They Hate Us by Aaron H. Aceves Siimon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Enrique “Quique” Luna has one goal this summer—get over his crush on Saleem Kanazi by pursuing his other romantic prospects. Never mind that he’s only out to his best friend, Fabiola. Never mind that he has absolutely zero game. And definitely forget the fact that good and kind and, not to mention, beautiful Saleem is leaving L.A. for the summer to meet a girl his parents are trying to set him up with.
Luckily, Quique’s prospects are each intriguing in their own ways. There’s stoner-jock Tyler Montana, who might be just as interested in Fabiola as he is in Quique; straight-laced senior class president, Ziggy Jackson; and Manny Zuniga, who keeps looking at Quique like he’s carne asada fresh off the grill. With all these choices, Quique is sure to forget about Saleem in no time.
But as the summer heats up and his deep-seated fears and anxieties boil over, Quique soon realizes that getting over one guy by getting under a bunch of others may not have been the best laid plan and living his truth can come at a high cost. -- Cover image and summary via Goodreads

THE HODGDON STORY
Success in the American tradition demands the qualities of motivation, determination, willingness to sacrifice, hard work, timing and a true element of luck. Even in our modern times of high taxation, escalating costs, and governmental regulation, it is still possible for the “common man” to become successful if he has a good idea and most or all of these qualities.
The Hodgdon Companies, as they exist today, are an example of this tradition. Until he began the surplus powder business, Bruce Hodgdon was a salesman for the Gas Service Company, traveling local territory selling gas appliances. From a few dollars borrowed on the cash value of his life insurance policy has evolved a manufacturing and distributing company that has customers in all 50 states and many foreign countries.
All his life Bruce Hodgdon was interested in shooting, hunting, and reloading. He custom-loaded ammunition for friends during World War II while he was in the Navy and after, while working full time as a salesman for the Gas Service Company. Somewhere Bruce had heard that the government burned huge stocks of surplus powder after WWI because of the lack of market for them, and he figured that the same would be true after hostilities ended in 1945.
Tumblr media
Even though he had no place to store gunpowder, and did not know if enough shooters would gamble to purchase unknown types of propellant, Bruce cut government red tape and soon owned 50,000 pounds of government surplus 4895. An old boxcar moved to a rented farm pasture served as the first magazine, the first one-inch ad placed in the American Rifleman, and Bruce was in business.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first 150-pound kegs of powder sold for $30.00 each plus freight! Early shipments also consisted of metal cans with hand-glued labels sent out in wooden boxes made from orange crates and sawed on a homemade circle saw by Bruce and his grade-school age boys, J. B. and Bob. A little later, the boys delivered shipments to the REA or the Merriam Frisco train terminal each morning on their way to high school. The trunk of the family 1940 Ford served as carrier for hundreds of thousands of pounds of powder during this time. Bruce’s Wife Amy served as bookkeeper and saleswoman. Very quickly mail order sales grew to include other reloading components, tools, and finally firearms and ammunition.
In 1952 Bruce resigned from the Gas Service Company and B. E. Hodgdon, Incorporated, was officially underway. J.B. and Bob entered the business full time after graduating from college in 1959 and 1961. After considerable expansion in the 1960s, it became apparent that splitting the wholesale firearm business from the nationwide powder business would save confusion among customers and facilitate bookkeeping. Hodgdon Powder Company came into being in 1966 as a result. Eventually, the wholesale firearms company was sold in 1984.
Tumblr media
If it were not for the efforts of a handful of men seeing that changes were made, shooters all over the country would now have much greater difficulty obtaining their powders. In 1963 and 1964, Bruce Hodgdon, Ted Curtis, Homer Clark of the Alcan Company, and Dave Wolfe of Wolfe Publishing Company, were successful in persuading the ICC – now the DOT – through exhaustive tests by the Bureau of Explosives to downgrade certain packages of smokeless powder to the much-easier-to-ship “4.1 – Flammable Solid” Classification. As a result, containers under 8 lbs. each and in approved packages of shipments weighing less than 100 net pounds can today be handled by any common carrier, including UPS and FedEx. Previous to this, all Smokeless powders were considered “Class B explosives” for shipping purposes, which is nearly as restrictive as the almost impossible task of transporting black powder.
After retlentless testing, Hodgdon Powder Company received approval for 1.4C shipping in 2014. Now, nearly all canisters up to eight pounds can be shipped under the 1.4c classification, making shipping much more efficient.
In 1967, the Hodgdon’s built what was then billed as “the world’s largest indoor shooting range,” an indoor structure allowing 44 shooters to share a 25 Yard range at the same time. This range and store is open to the public at 6201 Robinson, Overland Park, Kansas (www.thebullethole.com). Although this business was sold to outside parties in November 1982, we invite any of our nationwide customers to visit when in the Kansas City area.
Bruce Hodgdon passed away in 1997. Bruce was among other things an avid reloader, competitive rifle shooter, trap shooter, hunter, NRA Benefactor Member, and World War II Veteran. The industry honored Bruce for his contributions to the shooting sports in 1995/1996 with the Shooting Academy Award of Excellence. The responsibility of running the company then fell to his sons, J.B. and Bob Hodgdon, the two grade-school boys back in the late 1940’s, who worked hand in hand with their father to establish and grow this company.
Bruce’s oldest son, J.B. Hodgdon is still active in the business today and serves on the board and as Chairman Emeritus. He still remains passionate about shooting and hunting pursuits.
Bruce’s youngest son Robert Eltinge “Bob” Hodgdon went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 14, 2023. Up to his last year, Bob was still active in shooting and hunting activities with friends and family.
Today, Hodgdon smokeless propellants are developed and manufactured to meet the needs of every reloader. The powder that started Bruce Hodgdon’s business, H4895, is still produced and sold along with world-class powders available for just about any Rifle, Handgun, and Shotshell load.

Smokeless propellants are only half of the famous Hodgdon story. Muzzleloading shooters and hunters around the world recognize Hodgdon as the company that makes the best performing, most convenient, safest, and easy to clean black powder substitute propellants. Pyrodex®, introduced in 1976, is the most successful black powder substitute on the market. Pyrodex products are safer, cleaner burning and produces 30% more shots per pound than common black powder. Pyrodex also makes it easier to clean the gun after shooting.
Innovation is a key part of Hodgdon’s philosophy and values. The patented Pyrodex Pellets give the modern muzzleloader speed and safety in a convenient preformed charge. They offer quick and safe no-spill loading, instant ignition, and faster second shots.
Always looking to the future, Hodgdon took muzzleloading to the next millennium with Triple Seven® muzzleloading Pellets and granular propellants. Introduced in 2001, Triple Seven has proven to be very consistent and accurate but is most recognized for its easy water clean up and no sulfur (rotten egg) smell! In 2007, Triple Seven Magnums were introduced. Magnums deliver higher energy for serious hunting knock down power.
Hodgdon Powder Company offices are located at 6430 Vista Drive in Shawnee, Kansas. The Powder magazine, packaging and manufacturing facilities are maintained about 140 miles southwest of the main office, in Herington, Kansas. In 2020, when Hodgdon Acquired Accurate, Ramshot and Blackhorn 209, the Miles City, Montana location was also acquired. The Miles City location is still occupied with office staff, warehousing space and a world-class ballistics lab.
Tumblr media
To better serve our reloading customers Hodgdon Powder Company continues to grow. Hodgdon purchased IMR® Powder Company in October 2003. IMR legendary powders have been the mainstay of numerous handloaders for almost 100 years. IMR powders continue to be manufactured in the same plant and with the same exacting performance criteria and quality assurance standards that shooters have come to expect.
In March 2006, Hodgdon Powder Company and Winchester® Ammunition announced that Winchester® branded reloading powders would be licensed to Hodgdon. Winchester smokeless propellants, the choice of loading professionals, are available to the handloader to duplicate the factory performance of loads from handgun to rifle and shotgun.
Tumblr media
In January 2009 Hodgdon acquired an American icon GOEX Powder, Inc. GOEX has a rich history dating back to 1802 where E.I. Du Pont de Nemours broke ground on his original black powder plant along the Brandywine River in Delaware. Goex Powder, Inc. manufactures black powder used for sporting applications such as civil war re-enactments and flintlock firearms, and is a vital component for industrial and military applications. Located in Minden, Louisiana, GOEX Powder, Inc. is the only U.S. manufacturer of black powder. Hodgdon then sold the GOEX plant and brand in 2021.
In October of 2020, Hodgdon purchased the Accurate Powder and Ramshot smokeless brands from Western Powders, along with the Blackhorn 209 black powder substitute brand.
The company continues to drive innovation in smokeless powder through the Hodgdon, Ramshot, Accurate Powder, IMR and Winchester brands. On the black powder substitute product side, brands Blackhorn209, Hodgdon Pyrodex, Hodgdon Triple Seven and IMR White Hots continue our history of bringing technologically advanced and unique propellants to the marketplace. Today, as over the last seventy-five years, the success of the Hodgdon Companies depends upon the goodwill and satisfaction of our loyal customers. Thank you for the trust you continue to give our products; we hope our products are a part of the reason you enjoy your chosen sport of hunting or shooting.

Logos
As part of our unit 2, I had to research logos to then develop my own logo.
Tumblr media
Vivienne Westwood
Iconic. Punk. New Romantic. Vivienne Westwood was the brand of the 70's, embellishing t-shirts with shocking anti-establishment slogans and graphics, bondage trousers—black pants featuring straps inspired by sadomasochistic costume. She was ready to take a turn on the industry, working with bands like the sex pistols to take fashion to the next step. Her approach to the fashion industry was always with a dash of rebellion and fun that can be easily detected from her romantic corsets, outgoing slogans, and beautiful statement jewellery pieces. Upon entering the 80s, the orb emblem was born by combining the royal British symbol seen on crown jewels and rings of Saturn. Westwood, who admired Britain's deep history of monarchy and astronomy, wanted to pay homage to both facets.
Tumblr media
Playboy
The Playboy logo is one of the most iconic logos in the world, recognizable everywhere as a symbol of prestige, sexiness, and a little bit of mystique. Clean, simple, and yet entirely unique, the Playboy logos widespread reorganizability has no doubt played a role in the international success of the magazine. While Hugh Hefner was essential in creating Playboy, he was not actually the one who created the iconic logo. That distinction goes to designer Art Paul. Mr. Paul sketched out the logo for use in the second issue of Playboy. Since that second issue, the logo has not once been changed from the original design. This in itself is a remarkable fact considering how often companies redesign their logos these days and is a testament to the effectiveness of the original logo’s design.
Tumblr media
NASA
Conspiracy nuts are often accusing Nasa of covering up all manner of things such as; UFOs, secret space technology and even controlling the weather. And, although you'd think the space agency's logo is pretty innocuous, there are those that believe it also has a hidden meaning. Well, the surprise is that there's no big secret! The blue disc and stars represent a planet and space, with the red chevron adding the upward flight of aeronautics. The grouping of stars is said to mirror the constellation of Andromeda. However, some urologists claim that it doesn't match current star maps and may actually be linked to Nasa's alleged work on extra-terrestrial life.
Tumblr media
Stussy
The logo defining the brand started in the early 1980s, when he scrawled his surname on handcrafted boards with a simple broad-tipped marker. He then used the logo on T-shirts, shorts and caps that he sold out of his car around Laguna Beach, California. The signature was derived from that of his uncle, Jan Stussy. A piece to Stussy is the 8-ball which means “ball of destiny” and it symbolizes those who never give up, in the urban language it represents the last man left standing The brand grew during a time when epochal shifts that now frame contemporary popular culture were taking place. In the music scene the late ’70s gave us punk, while the early ’80s brought us a new DIY type of music called rap. Punk broke creative and aesthetic barriers and taught us that anyone could have a band. Rap pushed social boundaries and explored the ideas of remixing and sampling. These new ideas and territories created a new modern platform for fashion and cultural expression. The designs and overall aesthetic touched on references from a range of underground subcultures that resonated with Stüssy. This approach appealed to a worldwide network of creative youth who shared a common interest in surf-culture, skating and music. Limited distribution fuelled the desire internationally, and those who wanted the gear found it and felt a part of something bigger in the process.
Tumblr media
Porsche
the Porsche logo pays homage to Stuttgart, where Porsche’s headquarters are located. Stuttgart is located in southwest Germany and was actually built atop a horse-breeding farm. Stuttgart used horses in its city seal, inspiring Porsche to make a black horse the centrepiece of its logo which represents power and the seal of Stuttgart. Furthermore, the antlers and black and red stripes on the logo were influenced by Württemberg’s state seal, as the state colours are red and black. The Porsche logo design also honoured Swabia, the Porsche family’s second place of residence.
Tumblr media
Juicy Couture
The playful and glamorous mood characteristic for Juicy Couture is reflected in its logo. The name of the brand is given in an intricate, highly decorative script. While it has been inspired by Old English scripts, it does not look dated. The golden glyphs are decorated with highlights creating a 3D effect

Collage
Collage is a process and method in which using an image or multiple images to overlap on top of other images to portray an Idea or an image. For my college, I decided to use my face and try to college it to disguise my face. I have done this by photocopying multiple copies of my face and cutting out certain facial features for example a nose or an eye on top of the original face image. I placed the photocopies in a triangle overlapping them which came out successful as I was able to disguise my face using elements of my facial features which portrays my version of disguise in which I was able to do this by using primary sources and making it look effective as you were able to see the different facial features but in a distorted disguised way. This is linked to college artist Charles Wilson who uses the original image for example of a farm overlapping different parts of a magazine to keep the original image as well as a new image. This is what I tried to portray in my college which just overlaps on to the original image Then for my second college I decided to use an image of my face in which I ripped off half of the face and in its place placed I redrew the facial features in more of a clown way by adding the red smile and red face paint. Then with the parts, I ripped away I stuck the image away from the face so it had the effect of the face being ripped away and still being able to see what was ripped away. This was successful as it gave the illusion of the disguise of my face being ripped away and the clown being the original face rather than the other way around. This refers to the college artist sparkle in the new black also known as Stephanie who disguises faces using college which breaks away parts of the face with other images to separate the face and show a hidden face for like a disguise similar to my second college

What Is The Number One Home Business?
Tumblr media
People have various meanings, as far as what a home based business should be. The number one home business for every one is different. For some people, that means being able to work from home and for others, it means running a business from home. Running a business from home does not mean that you are home a lot. You can still run a home business from home and be out on the road more than even for a regular job. Many self-employed people like plumbers, handymen of all sorts, or even copy machine maintenance guys, can spend even up to 12 hours on the road sometimes. Many people just kind of settle because they do not know any better. In fact, they would argue like it is life and death, that they are in the number one home business on the planet. There is a proverb that your father has the largest acres of farmland until you go to another person's father's farm.
One thing I would like to address, is that a business man should never assume that they have the best anything. A business owner needs to understand that there should always be room for improvements. This is how we all grow in life and business. There is a thin line between being confident about your business and being straight up blind and not open to bigger and better things. There is also a thin line between jumping from one home business to another one due to your lack of skills and moving to a better situation simply because it is a better deal. There are way too many home based business owners jumping from one home business to another thinking the grass is greener when in fact they need skills.
One day, I went out to Barnes and Nobles to pick up a few Magazines. We were looking up business names to bid on in Pay Per Click (PPC) marketing, which is a pay per Ad click version of online advertising on Google Marketing platforms, like Adsense, where clicks received are through mini search engine Ads, based upon chosen keyword searches. I was astonished at how many companies that are offering business opportunities. Inside the franchise opportunity magazines, so many business were calling themselves home business franchises.
If your goal is to have more time with family at home, many of these home based opportunities do not cut it. You will end up in another rat race that is just worse than having a job. Many home businesses will only take more hours away from the free time you had after your day job and reward you with an empty bank account. Today, when you say home business to some people, it is a buzz word. It automatically reminds them of some type of scam. This is simply because many have lost their life savings on investing in home business opportunities that have not been so clear up front with people.
Instead of investing hundreds of thousands in borrowed money in an opportunity first, invest in your education first, along with knowledge and proven techniques from successful business people. In fact, home business education, and even training, is free these days. Note that you do not have to invest your life savings in some number one home business opportunity. Many home businesses cost less than $1,000 to start up these days. The rest of any other investment will be in even further education for you--the business operations itself.
There are so many people who have started a work at home business that are making full-time finance. This is great news because working from home gives you the opportunity to be flexible whenever you need time for in your personal day-to-day lifestyle. However, you still need to operate your home business with priority in mind, as your business is your means of financially sustaining your personal life, whether you are single or have a family.
Making finance in a successful home business is one thing, and another thing is actually spending what you have earned on frivolous things that quickly deplete your hard earnings.  It is always a good idea to save, while building your financial stability long-term, when running any home business... no matter how successful it starts and plays out in the long haul.  Things can always happen in everyday life, which can easily cause financial setbacks and hardships.  Therefore, it is always a great idea to have "nest egg" when operating a work at home business.
A lot of people, who are making regular finance, from home, are spending their finance as soon as they get their hands on it, which isn't a very smart thing to do. I made that same mistake several years ago, but have since then learned from my mistakes. Of course, you need to have some finance for yourself just to keep your sanity intact, but you first need to plan a budget for your business as well as for yourself. If you do not make a budget for your business, you are jeopardizing the future of your business due to the fact that you are not preparing for any slow periods or potential downfalls (even if only temporary).
Overall, a number one home business consists of something you choose in particular as enjoyable for you. When running any type of work from home business, your attitude should be operating a business that you truly enjoy, which can bring success based upon whatever product or service you are offering. As with any business, the products and services being offered on a public or private bases, can determine  your success potential, as products and services are essentially inclusive to what people want versus what they need. More businesses in modern days tend to focus on offering things that people actually need, therefore plugging-in to the 'supply and demand' factors in life. On the other hand, many businesses tend to focus on what people want, based upon popular products and services that revolve around desire and entertainment factors for peoples' personal enjoyment.  These are just some of the things to consider when choosing the number one home business for you to be successful in your financial endeavors.
Here is what many have considered a number one home business for 2022 and the future economy. You can get started by visiting: http://thesilversolution.net

Charlie Watts, whose strong but unflashy drumming powered the Rolling Stones for over 50 years, died on Tuesday in London. He was 80.
His death, in a hospital, was announced by his publicist, Bernard Doherty. No other details were immediately provided.
The Rolling Stones announced earlier this month that Mr. Watts would not be a part of the band’s forthcoming “No Filter” tour of the United States after he had undergone an unspecified emergency medical procedure, which the band’s representatives said had been successful.
Reserved, dignified and dapper, Mr. Watts was never as flamboyant, either onstage or off, as most of his rock-star peers, let alone the Stones’ lead singer, Mick Jagger; he was content to be one of the finest rock drummers of his generation, playing with a jazz-inflected swing that made the band’s titanic success possible. As the Stones guitarist Keith Richards said in his 2010 autobiography, “Life,” “Charlie Watts has always been the bed that I lie on musically.”
While some rock drummers chased after volume and bombast, Mr. Watts defined his playing with subtlety, swing and a solid groove.“As much as Mick’s voice and Keith’s guitar, Charlie Watts’s snare sound is the Rolling Stones,” Bruce Springsteen wrote in an introduction to the 1991 edition of the drummer Max Weinberg’s book “The Big Beat.” “When Mick sings, ‘It’s only rock ’n’ roll but I like it,’ Charlie’s in back showing you why!”Charles Robert Watts was born in London on June 2, 1941. His mother, the former Lillian Charlotte Eaves, was a homemaker; his father, Charles Richard Watts, was in the Royal Air Force and, after World War II, became a truck driver for British Railways.Charlie’s first instrument was a banjo, but, baffled by the fingerings required to play it, he removed the neck and converted its body into a snare drum. He discovered jazz when he was 12 and soon became a fan of Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus.By 1960, Mr. Watts had graduated from the Harrow School of Art and found work as a graphic artist for a London advertising agency. He wrote and illustrated “Ode to a Highflying Bird,” a children’s book about the jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker (although it was not published until 1965). In the evenings, he played drums with a variety of groups.
Most of them were jazz combos, but he was also invited to join Alexis Korner’s raucous rhythm-and-blues collective, Blues Incorporated. Mr. Watts declined the invitation because he was leaving England to work as a graphic designer in Scandinavia, but he joined the group when he returned a few months later.
The newly formed Rolling Stones (then called the Rollin’ Stones) knew they needed a good drummer but could not afford Mr. Watts, who was already drawing a regular salary from his various gigs. “We starved ourselves to pay for him!” Mr. Richards wrote. “Literally. We went shoplifting to get Charlie Watts.”In early 1963, when they could finally guarantee five pounds a week, Mr. Watts joined the band, completing the canonical lineup of Mr. Richards, Mr. Jagger, the guitarist Brian Jones, the bassist Bill Wyman and the pianist Ian Stewart. He moved in with his bandmates and immersed himself in Chicago blues records. In the wake of the Beatles’ success, the Rolling Stones quickly climbed from being an electric-blues specialty act to one of the biggest bands in the British Invasion of the 1960s. While Mr. Richards’s guitar riff defined the band’s most famous single, the 1965 chart-topper “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” Mr. Watts’s drum pattern was just as essential. He was relentless on “Paint It Black” (No. 1 in 1966), supple on “Ruby Tuesday” (No. 1 in 1967) and the master of a funky cowbell groove on “Honky Tonk Women” (No. 1 in 1969).
Mr. Watts was ambivalent about the fame that he achieved as a member of the group that has often been called “the world’s greatest rock ’n’ roll band.” As he said in the 2003 book “According to the Rolling Stones”: “I loved playing with Keith and the band — I still do — but I wasn’t interested in being a pop idol sitting there with girls screaming. It’s not the world I come from. It’s not what I wanted to be, and I still think it’s silly.”
As the Stones rolled through the years, Mr. Watts drew on his graphic-arts background to contribute to the design of the band’s stage sets, merchandise and album covers — he even contributed a comic strip to the back cover of their 1967 album “Between the Buttons.” While the Stones cultivated bad-boy images and indulged a collective appetite for debauchery, Mr. Watts mostly eschewed the sex and drugs. He clandestinely married Shirley Anne Shepherd, an art-school student and sculptor, in 1964.
On tour, he would go back to his hotel room alone; every night, he sketched his lodgings. “I’ve drawn every bed I’ve slept in on tour since 1967,” he told Rolling Stone magazine in 1996. “It’s a fantastic nonbook.”Similarly, while other members of the Stones battled for control of the band, Mr. Watts largely stayed out of the internal politics. As he told The Weekend Australian in 2014, “I’m usually mumbling in the background.”Mr. Jones, who considered himself the leader, was fired from the Stones in 1969 (and found dead in his swimming pool soon after). Mr. Jagger and Mr. Richards spent decades at loggerheads, sometimes making albums without being in the studio at the same time. Mr. Watts was happy to work with either, or both.
“Never call me your drummer again,” he told Mr. Jagger, before grabbing him by the lapel and delivering a right hook. Mr. Richards said he narrowly saved Mr. Jagger from falling out a window into an Amsterdam canal.“It’s not something I’m proud of doing, and if I hadn’t been drinking I would never have done it,” Mr. Watts said in 2003. “The bottom line is, don’t annoy me.”At the time, Mr. Watts was in the early stages of a midlife crisis that manifested itself as a two-year bender. Just as the other Stones were settling into moderation in their 40s, he got hooked on amphetamines and heroin, nearly destroying his marriage. After passing out in a recording studio and breaking his ankle when he fell down a staircase, he quit, cold turkey.Mr. Watts and his wife had a daughter, Seraphina, in 1968 and, after spending some time in France as tax exiles, relocated to a farm in southwestern England. There they bred prizewinning Arabian horses, gradually expanding their stud farm to over 250 horses on 700 acres of land. Information on his survivors was not immediately available. Mr. Doherty, the publicist, said Mr. Watts had “passed away peacefully” in the hospital “surrounded by his family.”
Eventually the Stones settled into a cycle of releasing an album every four years, followed by an extremely lucrative world tour. (They grossed over a half-billion dollars between 2005 and 2007 on their “Bigger Bang” tour.)But Mr. Watts’s true love remained jazz, and he would fill the time between those tours with jazz groups of various sizes — the Charlie Watts Quintet, the Charlie Watts Tentet, the Charlie Watts Orchestra. Soon enough, though, he would be back on the road with the Stones, playing in sold-out arenas and sketching beds in empty hotel rooms. He was not slowed down by old age, or by a bout with throat cancer in 2004. In 2016, the drummer Lars Ulrich of Metallica told Billboard that since he wanted to keep playing into his 70s, he looked to Mr. Watts as his role model. “The only road map is Charlie Watts,” he said.Through it all, Mr. Watts kept on keeping time on a simple four-piece drum kit, anchoring the spectacle of the Rolling Stones.“I’ve always wanted to be a drummer,” he told Rolling Stone in 1996, adding that during arena rock shows, he imagined a more intimate setting. “I’ve always had this illusion of being in the Blue Note or Birdland with Charlie Parker in front of me. It didn’t sound like that, but that was the illusion I had.”

Julia’s Kitchen  + a glimpse of Julie’s kitchen
"The subject of cooking and eating is so intimately bound up in the physical, practical, social, psychological, aesthetic, creative, spiritual and romantic needs of mortal creatures in the earthly here and now that any attempt to reduce it to rules and formulas is doomed to failure." - Bill Stumpf
Tumblr media
Julia Child was an American chef who introduced French cuisine to her fellow Americans (and to the world) with an easier, more accessible approach through her TV show and her cookbook, which was a collaboration with two of her French friends. She started taking cooking classes at Le Cordon Bleu while her husband, Paul Child worked at the American Embassy in France. After six years of living in France, the two returned to America, Cambridge, Massachusetts, bought a house and hired architect Robert Woods Kennedy to redesign the kitchen. However, they ended up decorating their kitchen mostly by themselves.
Julia expressed her and Paul’s attitude towards designing their kitchen in an article in Architectural Design (July/August, 1976), where she explained how they see the kitchen as a place not only for cooking, but also for living and communicating: “The kitchen proper was our major concern because, to us, it is the beating heart and social center of the household. Although this was our ninth kitchen, we never before had the luxury of a well-proportioned room. We intended to make it both practical and beautiful, a working laboratory as well as a living and dining room.”
In this post, Initially I will make an effort to paint a picture of Julia and Paul’s kitchen’s interrelationships. I then will take a look at Julie Powell’s kitchen, from the movie Julie & Julia, a considerably smaller kitchen which has to provide for the making of all Julia Child’s recipes from the cookbook that brought Julia fame.
Julia’s kitchen consists of four rooms: pantry, pastry, storage and the largest room for dining, cooking, cutting and mixing which is 24x18 feet. These rooms are all connected through frame-like openings on the walls that separate them.
Tumblr media
^ Julia Child’s kitchen plan indicating the four main rooms and different zones
The house has two entrances, the southern main entrance and the northern backdoor that opens to the courtyard. However, the backdoor was mostly used. Guests, friends and students entered the house via this door and were immediately ushered into the kitchen. The front door seems as ornamental and unused as those on every farm house in America. This kitchen, like the classic farm kitchen, is friendly, open and is the core of the Child’s household.
Guests walk about, then sit at the table, and we have aperitifs and talk while I am finishing the dinner. It is easy and pleasant, and I am one of the party the way I like to be. Food is better, too, infinitely better because the cook is in the kitchen, the way a chef is in his restaurant. No fresh green beans sit to warm up, losing their texture while I am in a dining room; no sauce will boil away nor custard curdle. Furthermore, nobody minds a bit of public stirring, tossing and tasting; in fact, most seem to enjoy being witness to the affair. (Julia Child, New York Times Magazine, May 16, 1976.)
In addition to being functional, Julia’s kitchen is artless, meaning that it’s not a monument, but a place that reveals process and personal involvement, failure and success. The kitchen is easily perceived, the information is ready-made and can be easily observed and described. It’s also small scale because it evolved through personal initiative, unblemished by commercial commitments, or by the American reverence for technology and over-consumption. Her kitchen expresses result as well as process and for that, it’s very productive. One doesn’t buy a collection of cooking tools and then hope to cook with them. One learns slowly, adding tools to suit new recipes and processes. Only by knowing how to cook can a cook truly evaluate the worth of a tool.. particularly a new tool.
Tumblr media
^ Six sequences of Julia working in different zones of the kitchen from the cooking zone to the pantry (Pardon mon mauvais dessin de personnages.)
The pantry is a place for wine storage, it contains of a small sink and cupboards full of various kinds of dishes. The butler’s pantry is also used for mixing aperitifs and other drinks. This room has a window which conveys the southern light into the room and two entry openings, one on the left leading to another part of the house, perhaps the living room, and the other connecting it to the pastry room.
The preparation of drinks is an obvious interference with meal preparation and therefore, it makes sense to set this function aside if space permits. -Paul Child
The pastry room has its own oven, a large horizontal marble surface on a cupboard for the process of making pastry and bread, a mini fridge under it for storing fruits, vegetables, stocks, ice creams, sweets and meat and also a high surface that goes around the area of the room for putting extra dishes and pots. The walls are covered with other pans, measures, pastry molds and so on.
Tumblr media
^ Sections cutting the cutting, mixing, cooking and dining area (left) and the pastry room (right)
The storage room to the west of the dining room, seems to be an extra storage space for wines (red or white) and it contains a small TV that Julia can watch while sitting at the dining table in the other room, while cutting and mixing ingredients.
Tumblr media
^ Watching TV from the dining table
The kitchen dining, cutting and mixing area is approached through the kitchen entrance that is placed to the right of the backdoor. The three large windows of this area convey northern light to the room, which is the best light for the kitchen area since it’s not direct and doesn’t warm up the kitchen too much. This zone is connected to the TV room and the pastry room. The main kitchen appliances such as the refrigerator, the stove (the big black monster as Julia called it), the oven and the Kitchen Aid mixer are here and there are pans, pots and cutlery hanging on the walls wherever there’s a free surface. There’s a small book case containing often used reference books and cookbooks next the the fridge and also a mini fridge under the horizontal surface on the north half of the kitchen. The table has the dual function of extra work surface for cooking, discussions and teaching.
Tumblr media
^ Section from the cooking, cutting, mixing, dining area and the TV room
The advantage of entertaining in the kitchen is, of course, that everything does not have to be ready... The capital point about kitchen dining, I think is not to make a “thing” about anything. Keep the place neat and professional looking, be informal and unhurried and above all, be firm in requesting your guests to remain seated throughout the meal. You do not want people leaping up to help you, since it disturbs the conversation flow which you, the cook, are participating in while performing your chefly functions. (Julia Child, New York Times Magazine, May 16, 1976.)
One of the special features of Julia’s kitchen is the utensils hanging on the walls. This was Paul’s plan for which he laid all the utensils on the floor and made various trial arrangements before permanently mounting and storing the objects.
Tumblr media
^ An isometric indicating the walls that are covered with kitchen utensils, the kitchen’s main entrance and sunlight direction
The kitchen’s plan was not determined purely by ideas of convenience: it was planned around the prevailing constraints of the architecture and several activity areas. These activity areas are interlinked by putting down space or counter tops.
I want as much working and putting down space as possible; there can never be enough for me.
The principle “out of sight, out of mind” is fundamental to the access of Julia’s kitchen.
The harder the utensils are to see, the less you will use them.
Many objects remain on display that are not used often, as she feels they are beautiful and it’s fun to have them around; but the majority are in serious readiness. Each object has a rightful place to be and to be seen, so much so that Pail has outlined the silhouettes of key tools to insure their safe return after use.

^ Pastry tools hanging on the pastry room wall
Julia’s view is that cooking and the kitchen should be of equal importance to the other daily functions, like leisure, working or sleeping and that the kitchen requires an expansive expression.
Can a conventional small house or apartment be converted into a studio house? Julia believes it can, if the desire is there to live creatively.
Living in an apartment with a small cramped kitchen is no excuse for not cooking good food. It’s possible to cook a good meal on a hot plate.
This brings us to Julie Powell’s kitchen, a tiny space with its two entries that make it seem like more of a corridor.
Julie is a telephone answerer at Lower Manhattan Development Corporation by day, and a home cook by night. Her kitchen is the place where she finds joy after a long work day of dealing with her soul killing job. A sort of jealousy towards one of her pretentious friends in her friend group, who recently started blogging about her daily life, encourages her to start a blog by herself for whose content she challenges herself to cook 524 recipes from Julia Child’s cookbook, whom Julia adores, during one year, 365 days. The movie, Julie & Julia is based on her book with the same title.
Tumblr media
^ Julie and Eric’s apartment building (from Julie & Julia)
She lives in a small, cramped apartment, on top of a pizza place, with her husband, Eric. Their flat consists of just a large hall and two rooms, one the kitchen and the other the bathroom. The couple have dedicated a corner of this hall to their bed, dividing the zone from the living area by a transparent shelf.

Unlike Child’s exclusive research and writing office, Julie does her routine blogging on her laptop, while sitting behind a small desk facing one of the three windows on the south half of the flat.
Tumblr media
^ Julie and Eric’s flat plan
The kitchen is a small area, the same size as the dining area in the center of the flat, and it is the first thing in view while climbing up the entrance staircase. The kitchen contains of very small work surface on two cupboards, one beside the stove and one in front of it. There’s little in Julie’s kitchen that resembles Julia’s, except for her pans and utensils hanging on the wall that’s technically outside the kitchen zone, between the kitchen’s southern wall and the last step of the entrance staircase.
Tumblr media
^ Julie’s kitchen view from the entrance staircase, The pans and pots are hanged on the left wall (from Julie & Julia)
Julie’s kitchen consists of a fridge with a microwave put on top of it, a tiny wine shelf, a four flame stove, a sink and a couple of small cupboards with a basket for onions and potatoes and such. Although there’s so little wall surface that’s not covered with kitchen appliances and cupboards, the remaining space is covered with art and picture frames.

^ Julie’s kitchen isometric view
Truly there’s so little similarity between Julie’s kitchen and Julia’s spacious and efficient one. However, it provides for the 524 recipes from Julia Child’s cookbook (including three lobsters) and many more, and it is the place Julie can finally free her mind and get to be creative and courageous, and in that concept, these two kitchens aren’t actually that different.

Model Who Feels Empowered Showing Off Her Boobs
Tumblr media
Sara Blake Cheek says ‘OnlyFans is empowering and it makes her a better mum!’ A model who feels empowered showing off her boobs on OnlyFans says it’s also made her a ‘better mum.’ Mum-of-four, Sara Blake Cheek, works as an OnlyFans model and sports analyst and is currently making in excess of £275,000 a year. She says despite getting hate and trolls, sex work actually makes her feel like ‘a boss.’ Sara Blake Cheek, @thesaracheeky on TikTok and @thesarablake on Instagram, started her OnlyFans account in 2020. ONLYFANS She immediately began pulling in up to $30,000 a month by sharing raunchy content and doing custom photos and videos. Sara said: ‘Doing OnlyFans has enabled me to be the mum and wife I have always wanted to be. ‘I am able to provide for my family, put my sons in private hockey lessons, pay for their travel hockey, and see them do things that will shape who they become in the future. ‘To anybody who doesn’t do this for a living, they don’t understand how someone can be a good mum, do regular mum stuff, tuck their kids in bed at night, and then start sexting on OnlyFans. ‘But it makes me feel incredible to be a boss arse bitch!’ TROLLS It’s not all plain sailing, however, as haters crawl out of the woodwork wherever Sara goes. She said: ‘The majority of society thinks that they can treat someone like crap for doing OnlyFans or that I am less than. ‘I get glares in school pick-up lines. ‘People who have never met me write horrible things about me, but none of that matters. ‘I have thick skin, Jesus loves me, and my family loves me – I turn the hate into motivation. ‘I’m chasing my dreams.’ PROUD ONLYFANS MODEL One of the reasons Sara is a proud, confident OnlyFans model is because her work allows her to show off her hard-gained figure. Sara added: ‘I work out for my body, so I love wearing revealing clothing. ‘It makes me feel sexy, empowered, and desirable. ‘I love showing off my bobs, I paid a lot of money for them and had the best surgeon. ‘I’m proud of those suckers! ‘Daisy Dukes and a tiny tank is my outfit choice hands down.’ OTHER WORK Sara isn’t only a sexy model, as she’s also building a successful sports coverage career that keeps her busy and she runs a six-acre farm too. She explained: ‘I do OnlyFans, TikTok, Twitter, sports analytics for ProSports Extra and Egotastic, YouTube, podcast and model professionally – my life is chaos. ‘But the confidence I have is from me being self-aware. ‘I don’t do something just to get likes or recognition. ‘I’m a huge Tennessee football fan, I bleed orange, and my fan base knows that from me talking stats, recruiting, Lane Kiffin, they appreciate real. ‘I want to be on the cover of a magazine, so I went and did that, I want to be a sports analyst, so I’m doing that. ‘I’m an OnlyFans model but I’m also so much more than that, there is a difference in doing this or letting it define you.’ DAILY LIFE Combining all that work with being a full-time mum and wife is tough – and Sara gave the low down on her daily life to prove it. She said: ‘My typical day gets started with my husband waking me up at 5:30am to get ready to workout while he gets the kids ready for school. ‘I make breakfast for my picky kid who only eats egg whites, I head to the gym, come home and help with our farm animals or give them love. ‘Then I answer emails and messages, get dressed, make content, post content, schedule photoshoots and appearances, answer DMs in OnlyFans, do interviews, catch up on sports news and try to call my friends and family so they know I still love them. ‘I get kids ready for hockey or cheer, tend to the animals, order DoorDash because I have zero time to cook or grocery shop, tuck the kids in, and spend time with my husband creating content until 1am in the morning. ‘My schedule is tough, and my time is extremely valuable. ‘I make as much content while the kids are at school as I can because when they’re at home, I’m mum.’ The dedicated mum and OnlyFans model added: ‘I’m incredibly hard on myself because I put all my effort into everything I do. ‘I’ve always known what I wanted and have always had a drive that the impossible is possible.’ ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ CASTING DIRECT SUCCESS ONLY HAPPENS WHEN WE work work work work work work work work work ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ CASTING DIRECT ARE FIRST AND FOREMOST: Modelling Agency Advice Center Marketing Management Social Media Management Camsite Management Studio Account-Based Camsite Management Tubesite Management Fansite Management Profile Management Casting To Studios Worldwide Casting Casting For Movies Broadcasting The World Casting For TV Webcam Model Management Female Webcam Model Management Male Webcam Model Management Transvestite Webcam Model Management Trans-sexual Webcam Model Management TIPS & STORIES Got a tip to share? MODELING INTO THE MOVIES
August 8, 1936
Tumblr media
By Jeannette Meehan, HOLLYWOOD
From the women’s angle, there are simply too many gorgeous newcomers in Hollywood. That fact is plain.
From the gentlemen’s angle, Hollywood is pleasantly crowded with the most alluring bits of femininity ever to delight the bald-headed row. This fact is even plainer. Oh, say it isn’t so, but there a new day dawning in the west for the Stage Door Johnnies.
Whence comes this influx of Eves? Who are these girls of such attractive physical make-up?
Well, sir, most of them are ex-models.
The highway and by-ways to Moviedom are past counting. Those most traveled have been the extra route, the beauty contest route or the I-have-a-relative route. Yesterday our newcomers were night club crooners, radio personalities and million-dollar heiresses. Today the majority of candidates for stardom are no longer being recruited from these avenues. It now quite obvious that any girl who has been a model approaches the casting office with an asset that permits her to pass up the waiting list.
Oh, phooey, what’s a model got that the others haven’t?
Well, when Radio Picture wanted five beauties for the fashion show sequence in “Roberta” they tested 30 girls, and then sent out an S.O.S. to the ranks of professional models. That was a year ago. Those five models so delighted the camera that they’re still under contract. (1)
Tumblr media
Just a few months ago, when M-G-M went scouting for 22 modern Venuses for “The Great Ziegfeld”, they discovered that the ex-models had a lot more poise and personality than the kids who were merely movie struck. Eighteen of those 22 “Ziegfeld Girls” were former models. Fourteen of the 18 were given contracts. You just can’t argue with “figures” like that, or should I say with “figures like theirs"? (2)
“Model your way to the movies” isn’t just a catchy phrase. Models come to Hollywood already equipped with the elementary essentials which studios spend a great deal of time and money trying to hammer into inexperienced youngsters. Models have already served their apprenticeship to the art of carriage, grace and charm. They’ve already passed a certain type of beauty contest. The girl whose picture helps to sell beauty preparations has to have a face that leads you to believe that the product is worth trying. A pair of silk stockings modeled on muscle-bound or "spindle” legs would scarcely lure you to the hosiery department.
You never see a good model stumble over her train. She remains regal and sure-footed in the most confusing draperies.
Figuratively speaking, these girls are above reproach. Most fashion houses require that their models be above medium height, broad through the shoulders, slim through the hips, and that their proportions be symmetrically arranged. Thus, they’ve long since graduated from the routine of diets, masseurs, and classes for corrective posture that faces tire average beginner.
In other words, movie producers are finding out that modeling is a natural complement to screen work. Film executives are discovering that the girls who come to them from portrait and artists studios and from fashion salons are far ahead of those who approach Hollywood's pot of gold with no training.
Not only that, but these ex-models seem to be well-mannered, well-educated girls whose off-screen poise and chic rivals that of their screen betters.
Tumblr media
Oh, dear are they gorgeous? They're enough to make us ordinary girls forget to look before we leap. Just for instance, take Pauline Craig [above] (3), an auburn-haired, statuesque beauty from Cleveland, O. She’s five feet six and one-half inches tall, weighs 118 pounds, and has a figure that only Jean Harlow (4) could be unconcerned about.
Miss Craig was a “Ziegfeld” girl - now she’s under contract. She skipped the first grade in motion picture training, and I guess we all know why. She was a model. Her glorious smile has appeared in hundreds of advertisements. As a fashion model she worked for I. Magnins. (5)
Are you wondering if these girls observe any general rules for the maintenance of health and beauty? Miss Craig will tell you that most of them prefer fresh air to smoky drawing rooms, and that they substitute milk for alcoholic beverages.
Incidentally, her hobby is collecting pictures of the Dionne quintuplets. (6)
Another girl recruited from the model ranks for “The Great Ziegfeld" was Wanda Perry (7), a vivacious brunet from Brooklyn. She's five feet five and one-half inches tall, weighs 120 pounds, and has brown eyes.
With her classic features and her superb figure, there was a great demand for her in New York’s portrait galleries and exclusive clothing establishments. She has posed and modeled for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, McFadden Publications and for tooth paste ads.
With an already perfect camera presence, she is not to be enrolled in the studio's kindergarten for beginners.
Over at Paramount there’s a queenly blond named Elizabeth Russell (8), probably the best known of former New York models. A favorite of such distinguished illustrators as Russell Patterson, James Montgomery Flagg, McClelland Barclay, Dean Cornwell, Paul Hesse, and Steichen, the photographer. Miss Russell is now in possession of a flattering long-term contract.
Artists agree that her features are photographically perfect. Artist or no artist, they’ll look perfect to you! She has modeled hose, nightgowns, and coiffures. Her blonde beauty has helped to sell cigarettes, jewels, soap, sheets, automobiles and first-aid kits. Very soon she'll be helping Paramount sell “Girl of the Ozarks,” her first picture (9). Miss Russell is five feet eight inches tall, weighs 118 pounds, has blue eyes and naturally blond hair.
Another beautiful blonde who modeled her way to the movies is Louise Stuart (10), a former Chicago debutante. After graduating from Miss Mason's Castle (11) she went to New York to visit former school chums. It was during one of these visits that she was persuaded to pose for cigarette ads. One good look at her flawless countenance, and modeling jobs were her for the asking. With plenty of time on her hands, and nothing to do with it, she went to work.
Miss Stuart attributes most of her success with the test director to her experience as a model. Posing for artists and photographers, she says, gave her a self-assurance which she has never lost. You'll see her first in “Lady Be Careful." (12)
A third Paramount prize is Veda Ann Borg (13), a stunning, red headed girl from New York. Before the studio signed her to a long-term contract, her divine proportions and sparkling personality had created a sensation in the modeling field.
One of the most exquisite of Hollywood's newcomers is brunette Anita Colby (14) who stands five feet seven inches tall without her high-heeled shoes. Her face has smiled at you from magazine covers, commercial advertisements and from the pages of the nation's smartest fashion periodicals. Her beauty is attractively framed in poise, wit and charm. She is conversant with world affairs, music, art and literature. Pictorially speaking, she’s a model of perfection. Radio proudly points to her name on its contract list.
Radio has two other "model" charmers in the persons of Maxine Jennings (five feet eight inches tall), and Lucille Ball (five feet six and one-half inches tall). Miss Jennings (15), a former model for the famous couturier, Jean Patou, is a stately redhead as handsome a creature as you ever laid your eyes on. You'll soon be seeing her in featured leads.
Tumblr media
Miss Ball (above), a blue-eyed blonde from Montana (16) and former model for Hattie Carnegie, is considered an important trump in the studio's hand. Her bosses have thus far cast her in wise-cracking roles, hoping to develop her into a counterpart of the late Lilyan Tashman (17) - but Lucille doesn't seem to need much help along those lines. Her poise, her suave delivery and her flair for clothes have already added to the gaiety of nations and have cannoned her well along the road to stardom.
One of the most beautiful of the "model" brunettes is Hester Deane (18) who is doing much to enhance M-G-M productions. Her likeness on the backs of magazines has caused many a gentleman to change his brand of cigarettes, and she posed for automobile body advertisements long before the studio discovered that her presence on screen would “up” the grosses.
She was born in Oklahoma City. Her education included art and music. Now, when she isn’t modeling or working in pictures, she designs clothes, takes piano lessons, and studies philosophy.
A good look at Mary Jane Halsey (19) will have different reactions on you, depending on your sex. If you’re a woman, you’d just as soon she broke her neck.
Miss Halsey was born in Milwaukee. After her family moved to Los Angeles she became a model for a famous cosmetician. She is five feet six inches tall and weighs 120 pounds. She has blue eyes, and ‘shhhhhh’, she writes poetry.
If these "model" newcomers get any taller, a few of our leading men will have to wear stilts. Extreme height, which has sounded the gong for many a beginners’ career, doesn't seem to be a handicap for the ex-models. When these lovely girls began to invade Hollywood, apparently the enthusiastic producers forgot all about the traditional physical specifications for screen heroines. There was a time when all actresses had to be extremely petite and slim, like Gloria Swanson and Colleen Moore, and, more recently, like Claudette Colbert and Margaret Sullavan (20). Unless you were a diminutive little trick about five feet two inches tall, and weighed less than 100 pounds, you might just as well have stayed on the farm. Greta Garbo and Kay Francis (21) were overlooked for a long time because of their height.
But the restrictions seem to have been called off. It appears that models can grow as tall as they like without the danger of facing dismissal from the casting office. Margaret Lyman (22), one of the prettiest of the model group to win a picture contract, stands five feet nine inches in her stocking feet, and weighs 129 pounds.
One of the most photographed models of the country, Miss Lyman has posed for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, The New Yorker and for cigarette and soft drink ads. She has brown hair and brown eyes. She wears a larger shoe than Garbo.
And no less charming is pretty Jane Hamilton [below] (23), another popular girl who found her way into pictures through the route of her professional success as a model.

Tumblr media
(1) “Roberta” was released by RKO on March 8, 1935. It was Lucille Ball’s 21st film.  Models were needed for the fashion sequences. The film also employed models Virginia Carroll, Diane Cook, Lynne Carver, Lorraine DeSart, Betty Dumbries, Myrna Low, Margaret McChrystal, Marie Osborne, Wanda Perry, Donna Mae Roberts, and Kay Sutton.  In addition to Lucille Ball, Wanda Perry, Maxine Jennings, and Jane Hamilton were in the film and profiled in this article.
Tumblr media
(2) “The Great Ziegfeld” was MGM’s 1936 biopic of Florenz Ziegfeld, the showman who glorified female beauty on stage. Lucille Ball was not in this film, but was later part of the cast of “Ziegfeld Follies” (1951). This film employed dozens of showgirls and models to play the Ziegfeld Girls. Those profiled in this article include Pauline Craig, Wanda Perry, Hester Dean, Mary Halsey, and Margaret Lyman.
(3) Pauline Craig (1914-97) made her screen debut in “The Great Ziegfeld” but only did five more films, leaving the business in 1939.
Tumblr media
(4) Jean Harlow (1911-37) likely did not know or care about Pauline Craig, even if Craig’s figure did give Harlow a run for her money. She was known as the original platinum blonde sex symbol. She died at age 26, at the peak of her popularity. MGM closed for her funeral.
Tumblr media
(5) I. Magnin & Company was a San Francisco, California-based high fashion and specialty goods luxury department store. It expanded across the West into Southern California and the adjoining states of Arizona, Oregon, and later to Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, DC, metropolitan areas. Mary Ann Magnin founded the company in 1876 and named the chain after her husband, Isaac. The chain was bought out by Macy’s in 1994.
Tumblr media
(6) The Dionne quintuplets (born May 28, 1934) are the first quintuplets known to have survived their infancy. The identical girls were born just in Ontario. All five survived to adulthood. The Dionne girls were born two months premature. The Ontario government and those around them began to profit by making them a significant tourist attraction. As of this writing, two of the girls are still living.
Tumblr media
(7) Wanda Perry was born Helen Beuscher in Brooklyn, New York, on July 24, 1917. When she was sixteen, she was named Miss New York City, and was offered a movie contract by Earl Carroll. Helen moved to Hollywood and took her mother's maiden name, Wanda Perry, appearing in films as a showgirl, an Earl Carroll Girl, a Goldwyn Girl, a dancer in "George White's 1935 Scandals," a fashion model, an extra, a bit player and a stand-in for Lucille Ball! Her final film was as an extra in Lucy’s Mame (1974).

(8) Elizabeth Russell (1916-2002) was the sister-in-law of Rosalind Russell. She started doing films in 1936 and finished her career in 1960. (9) “Girl of the Ozarks” (1936) was a Paramount film also starring Virginia Weidler, Henrietta Crossman, and Leif Erickson.
(10) Louise Stuart did two pictures for Paramount back-to-back in 1936. That was the extent of her film career.
Tumblr media
(11) Miss Mason’s Castle is a reference to Miss C.E. Mason’s Suburban School for Girls in Tarrytown-on-Hudson, New York. It was open from the late 1880s to 1934. The castle was razed in 1944.
Tumblr media
(12) “Lady Be Careful” (1936) did not feature Louise Stuart as is said here, although records could be incorrect. The film did feature Elizabeth Russell, however.
Tumblr media
(13) Veda Ann Borg (1915-73) did her first film for Paramount in 1936, and was continually employed in Hollywood until 1963. She was the first actress cast as Honeybee Gillis in “The Life of Riley” TV series, replaced a short time later by Marie Brown, then Gloria Blondell.
Tumblr media
(14) Anita Colby (1914-92) was born Anita Counihan. Early in her career, at $50 an hour, she was the highest paid model at the time. She was nicknamed "The Face" and appeared on numerous billboards and ads, many of them for cigarette advertisers. She did three films in 1936 alone, the same year she appeared on 15 magazine covers in a single month. In subsequent years she only acted in three more films, returning to modeling.
Tumblr media
(15) Maxine Jennings (1909-91) did 10 films with Lucille Ball between 1935 and 1937.  After 1938, her film appearances were sporadic.  She made her final screen appearance on a 1968 episode of “Hawaii 5-O”.
(16) Lucille Ball (1911-89) is stated as being a blonde from Montana. She was actually a brunette from Upstate New York.
Tumblr media
(17) Lucille is once again compared with Lilyan Tashman (1896-1934) a stage and screen actress known for her skill at verbal wit as well as her throaty delivery. She died at age 37, just one year after Lucille Ball arrived in Hollywood.
Tumblr media
(18) Hester Dean became known as 'The Girl with the Fisher Body' after modeling for the Fisher Automobile Company. Her only film was “The Great Ziegfeld” (1936).
Tumblr media
(19) Mary Jane Halsey (1913-89) was also in “The Great Ziegfeld” (1936) but by that time had done nearly a dozen films. She continued to act on screen until 1945.
Tumblr media
(20) Gloria Swanson was 4′11″, Colleen Moore was 5′3″, Claudette Colbert was 5′5″, and Margaret Sullavan was 5′3″.
Tumblr media
(21) Greta Garbo was 5′7″ (same as Lucille Ball), and Kay Francis was 5′9″.
(22) Margaret Lyman (1915-2002) was one of the models hired for “The Great Ziegfeld” in 1936. She did two more pictures before leaving screen acting behind.
(23) Jane Hamilton (1915-2004) was a Goldwyn Girl in “Roman Scandals” (1933) just like Lucille Ball. Hamilton, however, had done one previous film as a Goldwyn Girl, “Gold Diggers of 1933″.  She did seven other films with Lucille Ball. Her final screen role was in 1949.

This seasons planting . . . . . . . is next seasons harvest . . . is next seasons plant . . .
Interior spread, Street Farmer, 1971/72.
Street Farmer was a short-lived magazine of only two issues, produced by the London-based eco-anarchist architectural collective Street Farm.
Left:
It is obvious that whatever good becomes of mankind will be the result of an all out attack on the present political, social, economic, cultural, and educational systems. It is equally obvious that this attack will only be successful when alternative weapons are deployed.
Top right:
"From the southern side of the orchard ran a long road, chequered over with the shadow of tall old pear trees, at the end of which showed the high tower of the parliament house, or dung market.
' . . . where do you house your parliament'
'Well, well, dung is not the worst kind of corruption, fertility may come of that, whereas mere derth came of the other kind, of which these walls once held the greater supporters. Let me tell you that our present parliament would be hard to house in one place, because the whole people is our parliament.'"
William Morris, News From Nowhere Extract from Collected Fables of Urban Alchemy
Bottom right:
(1) These committees, street communes, village councils are not representative councils, they are not democratic, they are ad-hoc groups formed without coercion in response to the situation. All the people who by their possession of places to live—houses, rooms, cots, mud patches, gardens, trees, who by occupying space are members of the council. The councils have no need of specialist management boards, committees or professional services. These serve only to alienate the problems from the people. They are the advocates of government, of state. Within themselves all groups have the knowledge to make correct decisions about all matters which effect them. Only they do have the ability to make the correct decision. Any group which does not include all those people can NOT reach the correct decision!
(2) As we stand at the threshold of the new age, at a time when nothing surprises us, when all things are possible, the process we must engage in is that of establishing what is worthwhile then using it to replace aggressively or passively the relics of bourgeois systems.
Bottom right corner:
"Garbage collectors became heros [sic] as the new chandlers, taking garbage and processing it before giving it back as useful necessities, just as the original chandlers had taken oils and fats from the kitchens and made candles. Much of what the garbage collectors collected was never returned but put in barns with the rest of the useless things until they were needed. For all the packages and wrapping they gave barrels and tubs, that the people carried to the old supermarkets that had recently become granaries and warehouses of peoples produce to be filled. Some took them full of their own surplus produce and returned with a variety of foodstuffs."

A long time ago, on a radio far, far away...
May the Fourth Be With You!
It's one of the biggest Star Wars days in recent memory, with the success of The Mandalorian and the promise of even more stories from the galaxy on Disney Plus. When this date rolls around each year, I fire up my 4Ks (formerly Blu-rays, formerly DVDs, formerly multiple incarnations on VHS) and I revisit the Star Wars Radio Dramas.
Yes. Star Wars on the radio. As a kid who was both discovering the world of old time radio and a rabid Star Wars fan, these shows were like manna from heaven when I first heard them in 1995. I first learned of them in a retrospective article in the glossy quarterly magazine published by the Lucasfilm Fan Club (I was a card carrying member ), and when they appeared in a catalog close to my birthday, it was the only thing I wanted. My parents got me cassette collections of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, and I couldn’t tell you how many times I ran through those combined 23 episodes through middle and high school.
The radio adaptation of Star Wars aired in between the theatrical releases of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Coming to the airwaves at a time when American radio drama was all but extinct, this joint production of NPR and the BBC dramatized the first film in the Star Wars trilogy as a thirteen-part series. Not only did it feature several cast members recreating their roles - Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker and Anthony Daniels as C-3PO - but it also featured the classic sounds of the film (Chewbaca’s roar, R2-D2′s blips and beeps, the hum of TIE Fighters streaking through space) and John Williams’ fantastic score.
Science fiction author Brian Daley expanded upon the film script - the plot of the movie proper doesn’t kick in until Episode 3 of the radio series. Episode 1 focuses on Luke Skywalker’s life on Tatooine as he watches the stars and dreams of life beyond the farm. Years before scenes were added in the Star Wars Special Edition, Brian Daley added scenes between Luke and his best friend Biggs Darklighter, an Imperial cadet who confides in Luke that he intends to join the rebellion against the Empire. These early scenes give their reunion later in the story more weight as they take part in the mission to destroy the Death Star.
Episode 2 is all about Princess Leia. It establishes her espionage bona fides before she ever comes into possession of the plans for the Death Star. She uses an Imperial officer’s leering advances to her advantage and gets him to reveal the secrets of the Empire’s ultimate weapon.
It isn’t just Luke and Leia who get additional shading. In another move that preceded the Special Edition, Daley adds a scene with Han Solo and a Tatooine mob boss in the hangar of the Millennium Falcon. It isn’t Jabba the Hutt but it plays almost exactly the same - and frankly, it plays better than the scene with a young Harrison Ford and a crudely rendered Jabba. Daley wrote three Han Solo novels, and he plugged in perfectly to the seedier side of the galaxy far, far away.
It’s scenes like these that give the new actors a chance to put their own spin on the characters, an easier task when they don’t have to say the iconic lines of the film. Ann Sachs does a great job as Leia, and Perry King is charmingly roguish as Han Solo. And in a particularly inspired bit of casting, Brock Peters - miles from Tom Robinson - plays the dastardly Darth Vader.
The Empire Strikes Back followed two years later with the whole cast returning plus Billy Dee Williams recreating his screen role of Lando Calrissian and John Lithgow taking the role of Yoda. He’s terrific - Lithgow doesn’t do a straight impression of Frank Oz, but he captures the character and injects him with additional shading.
There’s less original material here - perhaps a testament to the wonderful screenplay penned by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan? - but Brian Daley adds a nice prologue that finds a Rebel convoy cut to shreds by a TIE Fighter ambush. It helps to set the scene for the darker second act of the trilogy. The ten-part series is wonderful, and while some additional “new” scenes might have been nice to include, you really can’t go wrong with the story presented.
Plans for a Return of the Jedi radio drama fell through and the final chapter wasn’t released until 1996, and even then it was produced by Highbridge Audio and not broadcast on NPR. This may adhere the closest to the film story, save for a nice scene where Luke Skywalker constructs his new lightsaber. Most of the cast is back, but Mark Hamill was sadly absent (though he was enjoying a second career as a voice actor - the farm boy from Tatooine was the Clown Prince of Crime in Batman: The Animated Series). Joshua Fardon does a fine job as Luke, but it would have been a treat to hear Hamill revisit his iconic role thirteen years later. John Lithgow comes back as Yoda, and Ed Asner growls his way through a performance as Jabba the Hutt.
This six-part show suffers a bit in comparison to the first two chapters (as does the movie itself), but it’s still engrossing entertainment with all of the music and magic of Star Wars.
I’ve been revisiting the series and it’s as much fun as it was when I first heard it as a kid. The entire trilogy is available in a great CD collection from Higbridge Audio. If you’re a fan of audio drama and/or a Star Wars fan, or if you are looking for a gateway to introduce someone to radio theater, check these shows out and take a trip to a galaxy far, far away.
Check out this episode!

Grey Street meets Linnea Gits and Peter Dunham, the creative minds behind Uusi Design Studio
This week we’re chatting with artists Linnea Gits and Peter Dunham about Tarot, their artistic processes, and their inspiring surroundings.
Tumblr media
First things first, tell us a bit about yourselves! Where are you from, and what are your star signs?
Peter and I are both artists working in the field of design. We grew up in the western suburbs of Illinois in the USA and spent most of our lives living and working in Chicago. Peter received a BFA at Northern Illinois University, and we met the summer after his graduation in Chicago. At that time, Peter had a small art studio in the West Loop, and I began apprenticing with him for sculpture and painting. We started dating and eventually moved in together and found a great space - a vast, light filled loft that was once a furniture factory - in a very industrial part of the city that became our home and studio. Close to downtown, low rent, and located in a remote area of the city, this space gave us the freedom to grow our artistic ideas unhurried by the marketplace.
Along the way, our art practice merged with design, and in 2010 we launched Uusi with the idea that life was worth the meaningful effort, and its reward was one of discovery. Within a year of our studio’s launch, we had established Uusi as a creative identity in our hometown of Chicago. A few years later, the wildly successful launch of our Pagan Otherworlds Tarot in 2016 introduced our work to people all over the world. We continued our journey within the Tarot world with a loyal and growing client base for esoteric content and objects, adding an Oracle and two more Tarot decks to our published titles. Working with the Tarot and the creative community surrounding it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives.
In 2017 we decided to relocate to an area that we had long dreamed of calling home: Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We traded the city’s fast pace and social energy for a slower life in the forest. It was a move that matched our spiritual exploration and has brought us an enormous amount of joy. We now spend our workdays surrounded by deep woods, nine acres of which holds a clearing for rolling farmland where a small dairy farm, built by a Finnish settler in the late 1880s, sits alongside a wandering creek. We knew the minute we saw it, that we were home and purchased it without a second thought. We are taking time, between art and design work, to carefully restore the hand-built, square-hewn farmhouse that is now our home and studio back to its original, humble beauty. Working on this old farm feels sculptural and sacred and feeds both our body and soul - good for anyone, and most definitely for this early Leo (Peter) and Sagittarius (Linnea).

A selection of early work by Linnea
Where were you first introduced to Tarot and Oracle, and what inspired you to start creating decks?
Peter has been collecting old playing card decks and tarot cards for years. He loved the imagery and the quality of vintage decks, and we often used them as inspiration for design projects we were working on at the studio. In 2012 we began a playing card series, and that naturally led us to the Tarot. We loved the meaningful content of the Tarot and how it accessed our minds and our hearts with the creative language of the soul. It is the search we are all on, the individual story that mingles with the ordinary magic of the world to reveal our most authentic self which, in turn, makes us feel most alive.
Tumblr media
A selection of Peter’s early work
Is there a particular deck that you are most proud of, or a specific card that you are really proud of designing?
We are proud of all of our decks! But we definitely have favourite cards from each one. Strength, The Tower, and Death from Pagan Otherworlds. The Lovers from Eros: The Garden of Love. The element cards and The Secret cards from Supra. The Transactinides from Materia Prima that join to create a tableau that nods to Durer’s masterful, Melancholia engraving. These are just some that stand out whenever we work through the decks, but every card has its creation journey, both enjoyable and painful and sometimes even surprising, but ultimately rewarding.
Tumblr media
How does the artistic process for creating Tarot and Oracle differ from your artistic process when creating less spiritual designs?
We have always worked with a great deal of intuitive direction. Color, form, and hand-drawn line create physical feelings that express themselves emotionally and instinctively within you. We have always felt that design should connect with you in this truthful way – it should meet your inner nature as well as the outer one. It should be both useful and beautiful, and if it is, it will be alive and self-creating, which we feel is the definition of spirituality. And that is something that can – should! – meet you in a spoon, table, or deck of cards as much as it does in a church, a tarot, or any meditative object.

Wooden animal set designed by Linnea and Peter, featured in the New York Times and at Design Within Reach.
I see that you draw inspiration from Celtic mysticism, renaissance illustrations, the beauty of nature and jungian psychology. Are there any “modern” things that you find personally inspiring? Film, music, artists, etc.
All of those inspirations continue to be modern, ha! But yes, we have contemporary favorites. We are big science fiction fans – 2001 A Space Odyssey is a work of art. As is the original Star Trek :). In music, we range far and wide: Metal, Folk, Classical, and pretty much everything in-between. We have an eclectic taste but it's very particular. Peter posts some of our favorites at the studio on our IG account and has a loyal following for those music finds. We also love Japanese printmaking and craft – both old and contemporary. And books!! I am a total book nerd. I'm currently reading "Figuring" by Maria Papova. An insanely inspiring, beautiful work. I also picked up the recent edition of "Fool" magazine, "The Japanese Issue" (in my second life I want to be a sushi chef), and every article was fascinating. Anything by the writer/photographer, Teju Cole. Love the fashion designer Simone Rocha. The Fine Artist, James Kerry Marshall. Relaxed modernism. The grateful invitation to enjoy the quiet, humble luxury of our neighbor's sauna on a cold winter night. Snowshoeing in the woods after a snowfall. Gardening. Our cat, TMobile. Our dog, Yuki. My nephew's drawings. Dark nights filled with stars! The inspiration list is endless.

Soulful sketch of a moose, illustrated by Linnea’s seven year old nephew Beckett.
If you could go back in time and meet your childhood selves, what advice would you give to them?
Linnea: Bake more pies with Grandma B, but take it easy on the sugar – you don’t need to be the mayor of Candytown.
Peter: Follow your heart like you did the first time.
Is there anything you are currently working on that you would be happy to share with our readers?
We have a new playing card deck called "Republic" coming out in the spring! We haven't created a new playing card deck for our studio in over four years, so it's pretty exciting for us. The deck's inspiration is Finnish/Nordic folk art and design. There is a large Finnish community in the Upper Peninsula, especially in our hometown of Republic – a Finnish settler built the home that now houses Uusi – how serendipitous is that! And we are excited to have a deck that bears the name of this local community that we love so much. We are also working on a special tarot project that we will be talking about more this summer :)

A government minister overseeing new cryptocurrency policy in Pakistan said that a local province will build two hydroelectric mining farms.
According to a report from Reuters, Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is planning to build two hydroelectric-powered pilot cryptocurrency mining farms. Though the report did not specify that the farms would mine bitcoin in particular, the ongoing bull run in bitcoin’s price, growing institutional acceptance of the asset and general market dominance of BTC would all suggest that they would.
While the cost of building these mines remain unknown, a top government official, Zia Ullah Bangash, who is an advisor to the provincial government on science and technology, reportedly said that “People have already been approaching us for investment, and we want them to come to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, earn some money and have the province earn from that as well.”
This is an indication that the provincial government accepts that the leading cryptocurrency can be used as a means of generating funds for the government and also provide employment opportunities to the masses. Bangash added that there are hopes that the federal government of Pakistan can control online frauds or other types of scams by participating directly in mining.
Pakistan’s government has set up a committee to create a new regulatory policy for cryptocurrencies. It has previously been relatively hostile to the industry, declaring that cryptocurrencies were not legal tender in 2018 and tightly regulating cryptocurrency firms as of 2019.
But Bitcoin trading and mining has continued to thrive in the country, as a local Bitcoiner explained to Bitcoin Magazine earlier this year.
— BY OLUWAPELUMI ADEJUMO
TRACING THE GROWTH OF BITCOIN IN PAKISTAN
With growing adoption and state-sponsored mining in Pakistan, what does the country’s Bitcoin present and future look like?
— Farooq Ahmed | January 19, 2021 | Bitcoinmagazine.com
Tumblr media
Bitcoin is currently banned by the State Bank of Pakistan and it’s illegal for businesses, banks and other entities to trade bitcoin in the jurisdiction of Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
But Pakistan is the world’s fourth-largest country by population, and about 50 percent of the population is between the ages of 15 and 40, and only about 4 percent is over the age of 65. So, bitcoin adoption in Pakistan is increasing at a fast pace, even though it's banned by the State Bank of Pakistan. Many freelancers working in tech industries from Pakistan get paid in bitcoin. Which brings more liquidity in the country.
And there has been regulatory progress from one region of the country, which will lead the government to invest its own funds into bitcoin mining farms.
This combination makes Pakistan one of the most interesting regions in the world when it comes to Bitcoin adoption, regulation and the mining industry.
BITCOIN TRADING IN PAKISTAN
The daily volumes of trades are increasing in Pakistan despite the government’s ban on bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
Bitcoin is being traded heavily on peer-to-peer exchanges like Paxful and LocalBitcoins in Pakistan. Other chunks of trades are happening in social media groups and online communities where freelancers sell their bitcoin in exchange for cash-to-money exchangers who later sell it on a 5 percent to 10 percent premium.
Bitcoin is currently not accepted anywhere in Pakistan as a medium of exchange. There is not a single regulated, centralized bitcoin exchange operating in Pakistan where people can buy, sell or trade bitcoin. So it’s a bit difficult and risky for freelancers to convert it into cash.
THE BITCOIN MINING INDUSTRY IN PAKISTAN
The Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining industry in Pakistan was thriving until April 2018 when the government put a ban on trading and mining cryptocurrencies in the country.
But the mining industry in Pakistan is increasing steadily despite the fact that the government has been shutting down mining farms since this ban was enacted. Ultimately, that ban led to an increase in the number of people operating bitcoin miners at home, most of which using mining pools like ViaBTC, Braiins and Slush Pool to mine bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
On December 2, 2020, the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), one of the country’s four provinces, passed a resolution on legalizing cryptocurrencies and bitcoin mining. Earlier this year, KPK approved the use of government funds to mine bitcoin. Local outlet BOL News reported that KPK’s government will set up two bitcoin mining farms.
“[KPK Information Technology Advisor Ziaullah Bangash] said that the government feels that Pakistan should not lag behind in the field of digital currency mining,” according to the report. “He said that the first step has been taken by the [KPK] government and other provinces would follow suit.”
Private sectors and investors will surely set up new mining farms in the near future with the mining industry now legalized in at least one province of the country.
Still, Bitcoin miners could face one hurdle there. There's been a power shortage in Pakistan for years and regular power shutdowns are a normal thing in the country. Even in large cities like Lahore and Karachi, it does not surprise anyone if the power goes off for several hours.
Electricity is cheap in Pakistan, but power generation from hydro turbines on a small scale in the northern part of Pakistan is easier and more cost effective to leverage and could help prospective miners avoid shutdowns.
BITCOIN EDUCATION AND SCAM AVOIDANCE IN PAKISTAN
Due to minimal education and misguided regulations, the crypto scam rate in Pakistan — like in other developing countries — is higher than in developed nations, which makes it an easy market for scammers to operate in.
People promoted many scam projects leading up to and during the 2017 bitcoin bull run, which became the biggest factor in the country’s bitcoin and cryptocurrency ban. Scam projects like OneCoin have been sold to people in Pakistan as investment opportunities to make quick profits in short periods. The people behind those projects were mostly Pakistani-British nationals who funded the projects and scammed millions from those who invested their money, only to find out later that the company ceased to exist.
This is why the core factor for the success of Bitcoin in Pakistan for the future is ensuring that people get the right education about this new technology, as many still believe that Bitcoin is a scam and some kind of “get rich quick” scheme.
Tumblr media
To this end, the Bitcoin Association of Pakistan aims to educate people and businesses about this new asset class and how these things are changing the world for good.
Still, I am afraid that cryptocurrency scammers will target the country once again, as it is becoming legal to mine and trade cryptocurrencies in Pakistan. The government should actively track those bad players down and strictly regulate the issuances and promotion of new cryptocurrencies in the region. This would hopefully eliminate fraudsters and pave the way for continued adoption of Bitcoin.

Porn purveyor Larry Flynt, who built Hustler magazine into an adult entertainment empire while championing First Amendment rights, died Wednesday.
He was 78.
Flynt had been in frail health and died of heart failure at his Hollywood Hills home, said his nephew, Jimmy Flynt Jr.

Flynt scored a surprising U.S. Supreme Court victory over the Rev.

Larry Flynt,” which brought Oscar nominations for director Milos Forman and Woody Harrelson, who played Flynt.

This frisky pop confection finds Blackpink teaming up with American singer Selena Gomez. The five girls use a series of ice cream double entendres to send out mating calls and detail how they are different from the other females. I know that my heart can be so cold But I'm sweet for you, come put me in a cone Blackpink and Gomez are encouraging the guys to ignore their icy cool demeanors. Once they take a couple of scoops they will find they are loving and affectionate.
The song's icy metaphors not only have a sensual connotation but also allude to the singers' wealth. Ice on my wrist, yeah, I like it like this Get the bag with the cream The girls are wearing diamond encrusted watches (ice is a slang word for diamonds). "Get the bag with the cream" refers to a bag loaded with cash.
The song is Blackpink's second hookup with a major American pop star in 2020, following their Lady Gaga collaboration, "Sour Candy." Both songs use sexy food analogies to represent the enticing love that the girls are ready to give out.
Frequent Blackpink collaborators, the Korean Teddy Park and the American Bekuh Boom, are the primary writers. Park wrote the main melody while Boom was in Korea. She then wrote the lyrics over his tune, incorporating a series of sexy ice cream-related play on words. The other credited writers are Ariana Grande, her go-to collaborators Victoria Monet, and Tommy Brown, Mr. Franks, Selena Gomez and the Korean producer 24.
The retro-tinged video finds Gomez driving a pink ice cream truck in a pinup sailor outfit. The four Blackpink girls all appear in a candy-coated frozen dessert fantasy land before ending the clip in an ice cream amusement park. Blackpink's scenes were filmed in South Korea, while the scenes featuring Gomez were shot in the US because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The song was birthed at a songwriting camp that producer Teddy Park asked Bekuh Boom to run for Blackpink's debut studio album. Boom asked Tommy Brown and Victoria Monét to come to the sessions at LA's Westlake Studio, and the pair brought Mr. Franks along with them. "Tommy had Franks pull up beats, and eventually Franks played the one that all of us started vibing to and decided to work on together," recalled Boom to Genius. "Victoria brought up the subject 'ice cream' and started humming melodies that we then started writing lyrics to together in the room. From that point on we had a great back and forth of ideas for the first half of the song that was done that night."

Come suonano?
