Sustainable Cambodia utilizes a participatory development model: The village families create a Village Development Committee, which works with our staff to prioritize the projects that will have the most impact on the village. Nothing is "given" to the villagers. The villagers must commit their time and labor to make the project happen, while Sustainable Cambodia typically provides the training and nearly all the early financing for the projects. The amount of assistance is slowly reduced after a three-year period, as the villagers become more and more self-reliant. It takes four to five years, but eventually, the quality of life in the village is dramatically improved, and the villagers have the self-created resources to continue to improve it.

The projects which each Village Development Committee chooses to implement are unique to each village, but often they include water wells, community ponds, rainwater harvesting, irrigation, gardens, alternative agriculture, a village school, a pre-school, vocational training, micro-loans and micro-business, and village healthcare.

Autonomous Racing Thrills at 25th Goodwood Festival of Speed

The Goodwood Festival of Speed, July 12-15 in West Sussex, England, is an annual treat for the world’s automotive racing fans—and an event so thrilling it’s making other auto shows want to up their game. While there’s the expected excitement about really fast and agile cars that dozens of brands bring to thousands of fans, an autonomous driving spectacle is the star of the Silver Jubilee 25th anniversary event.

The four-day festival, held on the estate of Goodwood founder Charles Gordon-Lennox, the 11th Duke of Richmond, is sponsored by partners including Mastercard, Bonhams and Michelin—not to mention the array of dazzling vehicles that fans have come to expect.

There’s a new Toyota Supra, a highly anticipated reboot of the brand’s classic sporty nameplate; the Lanzante McLaren P1 GT “Longtail,” a racer’s dream; the 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt, a nod to the iconic Mustang that Steve McQueen drove in the movie of the same name; the Polestar 1, Volvo’s $155,000 two-door coupe hybrid concept; and the Tesla Model 3’s European debut.

There’s even a new one-off MINI model that was created for the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, with a roof graphic that combines the UK and US flags and a “Just Married” message that appears on the ground outside Milord and Milady’s doors as opened. Proceeds from an auction of the car will benefit one of the couple’s favorite charities, the Children’s HIV Association.

But it’s the autonomous vehicles at Goodwood that has fans excited for the famous hill-climb up a 1.16-mile track: the classic 1965 Ford Mustang with an autonomous driving system by Siemens (above) and Roborace’s Robocar which completed the hill run in self-driving mode.

“The vehicle will be tasked with navigating hay bales, flint walls and forests on the Goodwood estate, using a variety of sensors that give it 360-degree machine vision around the race car,” Goodwood stated in an advance press release about Roborace.

And so the low, black, electrically powered Robocar streaked in near silence up the winding course of the Goodwood estate’s driveway transformed into the FoS racetrack. Its designer, Daniel Simon (known for his work on Tron: Legacy) dropped the cockpit and whittled away the central spine of the vehicle, according to Wired, because he didn’t have the constraint of keeping a human driver safe. The wheels flare out at the corners behind huge aeroducts.

“Roborace plays an important role in the future of mobility, challenging public perceptions and providing a platform to advance new technologies,” said Charles Gordon-Lennox. “This makes them the perfect partner to undertake this significant feat.” And as Roborace deputy CEO Rod Chong told Wired, “We’re pretty sure when the car appears people will freak out.”

It’s all the more special that Roborace completed the first official autonomous hillclimb at the 25th anniversary of Goodwood, with Robocar successfully navigating the 1.16-mile course using artificial intelligence.

“We are ecstatic that the team have been able to achieve this landmark run and we hope that it draws attention to the amazing advances that are being made in the automotive industry,” said Chong. “Robocar is an ambassador for the future technologies we will see on our roads and we hope that inspirational stunts like this will change public perceptions of autonomous vehicles.”

To commemorate the historic accomplishment, the entire run was recorded with a 360 camera system mounted on the fuselage of Robocar. The content was captured for Robocar VR, a custom virtual reality experience debuting inside the Future Lab at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018:

According to the Motorcycle Industry Council, the trend of more women buying motorcycles has experienced steady growth in recent years. A 2018 survey shows that women make up 19 percent of motorcycle owners. The demographic has almost doubled since 2009 when only 10 percent of bike riders were women.

While no research has been conducted to determine what percentage of women riding motorcycles are blondes, like the slogan says, they are probably having more fun.
