#Repost @iam_deadly_feliciafoxx • • • • • • Aboriginal Land Just a reminder to all of you who celebrate the 26th January In under 2 weeks time it will be the 26th January! Every January I feel the need to remind everyone of the terrible history of Australia especially when it comes to the horrible day “Australia Day” a day that genocide started for my people the First people of this land, more so known to my people as Survival Day or even Invasion Day. So many of my ancestors were killed, raped and slaughtered while our land and waters were stolen. So this is why the 26 January should never be celebrated at all. The following is a statement released by activists in Queensland following a number of instances of police violence and intimidation during the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Protests were held during the Games to highlight the ongoing genocide of Aboriginal people. But it appears that Queensland police did everything they could to stop people exercising their democratic rights.

One of my first memories is of a Royal Wedding. I was not that old and I lived in Zimbabwe but the buzz and excitement spread right across the Stolenwealth and beyond. I remember staring at the longest tail I’d ever seen on any dress or veil. I remember her stepping out of the golden chariot (I might have made that bit up ... I was a toddler, I can be forgiven). I remember thinking that somehow the world was different now that she was inside a place. The past week, for some reason, I keep thinking about Princess Di. A posthumous documentary reveals the reason why she married despite substantial doubts: her face was already on the commemorative tea towels. Makes me remember how hard it is to escape other people’s story of us and answer our heart’s calling 💜🦋

Knowledge in a form of Protest
Protesting on the streets has slowly become a thing of the past and nowadays protesting by online forms/signing protests online has become the new “lazy” less informed form of protesting by the public. Despite the new wave of protesting, there are still citizens that use the form of protesting in the streets to bring about change.
Tumblr media
Today I thought it was important to talk about the history of protesting for Indigenous Australians, for me the Indigenous protesting movement is one of the most profound in Australian history and even with modern protesting, the use of traditional protesting holds a significant place.
Tumblr media
1938, Protest of Australia Day, State Library of NSW.
Protesting against ‘Australia Day’ January 26th is a day of mourning for Indigenous Australians often referred to as Invasion Day. I’ve read an article which in 1938 Sir Douglas Nicholls and 100 or so other protesters, protested the day to bring more legalisation and cultural change to the understanding of white Australians, who knew little to nothing of the issues that Indigenous Australians face. For me ever since I have liked an Indigenous facebook page, I see Invasion Day protests every year as well as other protests on events that happen throughout the year.
Tumblr media
Melbourne protest, 2016, ABC.
In 2016 after Four Corners investigation of neglect and abuse on adolescents while in juvenile detention centres in NT, predominantly Indigenous youth. This protest stopped the city in its tracks and I remember being in the city and it significantly delay my travel, which was the desired outcome and it did stop me and made me think about the reasons why they protested in the first place.
#JUSTICEFORELIJAH was coined due to the death of 14 year old Elijah Doughty by an unnamed man in Western Australia in 2016. The protest in 2017 occurred due to the unjust verdict for this unnamed man and to call on the history of mistreatment and death of Indigenous Australians in custody and their verdicts or lack of.
The most recent form of protest has been the Stolenwealth Games which occurred in all parts of Australia but primarily in Queensland to protest the Commonwealth Games, social injustices faced by Indigenous Australians and Australia’s colonialist history.
Tumblr media
Surfers Paradise, 2018, The Guardian.
An interesting observation would be the continued protesting history for Indigenous Australians and how media groups often report but in passing without informing the public on the reasons why these protests occurred. Its an important form of communication for Australians to learn of the issues faced by Indigenous Australians, but the sad reality seems to be the fact we as Australians know little to none of the issues faced by Indigenous Australians on a day to day basis or even historically.
