some warmups for an SI piece!
[ID: two marker sketches of a common tern in different styles and positions.
The first sketch shows an adult in grays, black and red (for the dorsal feathers, cap marking, and feet & beak respectively). It is about to land, its wings held up as if about to beat down.
The second one is much more abstfact, shown in dark blue, cyan and orange. The tern is held midair as its about to dive down. End description.]

Common tern - The Port A Jetty, East Cotter Avenue, Port Aransas, TX, USA
Joshua J. Cotten
Scientific name: Sterna hirundo
Mass: 4.2 oz
Conservation status: Least Concern (Population decreasing)
Class: Aves
Family: Laridae
Genus: Sterna
Kingdom: Animalia
The common tern is a seabird in the family Laridae. This bird has a circumpolar distribution, its four subspecies breeding in temperate and subarctic regions of Europe, Asia and North America. It is strongly migratory, wintering in coastal tropical and subtropical regions.
Common Terns nest on rocky islands, barrier beaches, and saltmarshes and forage over open waters. Terns often gather over warmer waters with high densities of American sand lance (a small fish) in the spring, and tuna that help scare up smaller fish in the fall.

Found this lovely green friend while visiting San Diego - any chance of an ID? I'm not sure they were doing so hot but I didn't want to bother them too much.

It's a figeater! Adult beetles don't live particularly long, so it may have already mated and is at the end of its natural life. And that's okay I'll bet it lived a nice beetle life :)

BOTD: Arctic Tern
Tumblr media
Photo: Ingeborg van Leeuwen
"Famous as a long-distance champion: some Arctic Terns may migrate farther than any other birds, going from the high Arctic to the Antarctic. Breeds on coasts and tundra from New England, Washington, and Britain north to the northernmost limits of land, and spends the rest of the year at sea. Its migrations take it to every ocean, and to the vicinity of every continent. In North America, seldom seen from land south of its breeding grounds."

For the end of year book ask: #16 & #17!
16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?
lol. lmao even. Surprising no one, it was Fourth Wing. No, it wasn't The Worst Ever, but FUCK come ON it was not as good as people said! It was the definition of Fine™️! Perfectly serviceable book, but absolutely nothing groundbreaking except their sex i guess
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
Okay look I read Beyond the Ruby Veil on impulse, while waiting to be taken back into surgery and while I recovered. It was supposed to be a dumb book to pass the time so I wouldn't be an anxious mess. So tell me why I enjoyed it so dang much I immediately requested book two from the library! It wasn't OMG AMAZING THE BEST but it was entertaining! I loved how awful everyone was! It was fun to read! I might even read it again one day because it was also a very quick read.
