Crazy Rich Asians
Based on the fact that characters in "Crazy Rich Asians" often travel around Marina Bay Sands, I learned that Singapore has a diverse and vibrant city lands. Marina Bay Sands is a luxurious and iconic hotel and shopping complex located in the heart of Singapore, overlooking the beautiful Marina Bay. The characters in the book frequently visit this area for social events, parties, and shopping plans, showcasing the bustling urban landscape of Singapore. This demonstrates that Singapore is a modern city with a mix of high-end shopping, entertainment, and stunning architecture along its waterfront. Another aspect of Singapore's geography that is highlighted in "Crazy Rich Asians" is the lush greenery and tropical climate. Characters in the book are often seen dining in outdoor restaurants surrounded by tropical plants and foliage. This shows that Singapore is a green city with a strong emphasis on outdoor spaces and nature. The characters also make trips to the Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcasing Singapore's commitment to preserving its natural beauty. This highlights the fact that Singapore is a tropical paradise with abundant greenery and a warm climate, making it a unique location for the events of the book.
Based on the fact that in "Crazy Rich Asians," the characters frequently visit the historic Raffles Hotel, I learned that Singapore has a rich colonial history. The hotel, named after Sir Stamford Raffles who founded the modern city in 1819, is a symbol of Singapore's past as a British colony. The architecture and atmosphere of the hotel reflect the colonial era and provide a glimpse into Singapore's history as an important trading port for the British Empire.
Based on the fact that the characters in "Crazy Rich Asians" attend extravagant parties and social events, I learned that the culture of Singapore places a strong emphasis on wealth and social status. The book portrays a society where one's success and prestige are measured by their possessions and connections. The rich lifestyles and luxurious displays of wealth in the novel reflect a culture where material wealth and extravagance are highly valued. This aspect of Singaporean culture is further demonstrated through the characters' obsession with designer labels, expensive cars, and lavish homes, showcasing a society that values material success and status symbols.
From Singapore, I learned that in life, being diverse and inclusive in a certain society can lead to harmony and prosperity within.
By me reading Crazy Rich Asians and doing this project, I learned that I have a strong ability immerse myself into a book to analyze the different cultures and perspectives that were being shown to me. Because I am myself, am a simple high school student, I was not familiar with the wealthy and elite society that existed in Singapore and the book was able to provide me with a window of opportunity into that secret world that I didn't know about and allowed me to understand the characters and what was their motivations on a deeper level than I knew before. I also realized that by reading about characters and people that are very much different from myself that it allowed me to understand more about sides that I knew less of before and see their experiences through a different and new view in a meaningful way. Overall this project has made me realize that I am usually not the best at remembering to do things at the right time and usually ends up with me forgetting to do it at all which has caused me a lot of trouble during this year, but was able to make me be sure of myself that I do still like to read and learn new things even when I don't happen to do it often.

WEEK 4 & 5 - Reflective Writing
Tumblr media
There are five components that help us articulate opinions of design objects: Processes & purposes, subject matter & meanings, choice & uses of medium, aspects of form and contexts of piece. Take the Risis sculpture. The purpose of this sculpture is to be a gift that resembles respect & appreciation. The medium of this object is gold, and is universally known to be used to convey the perception of luxury. It’s perfectly united in shape, making it ideal to be placed as a decoration. The context is to create a statement piece that can be gifted to someone to show that they respect you or as a beautiful souvenir to remember Singapore.

During the class activity, I brought my Pompompurin keychain. This object means the world to me since it reminds me of the happiest day of my life when I first got it.

This week we went to the National Museum of Singapore. Story of the Forest feels ethereal with the sounds of Asian Koels chirping and a frangipani aroma. Descending down the Glass Rotunda, the vast screens display the scenes of a rainforest.

Singapore, A Very Old Tree. It's admirable how this country conserves nature. These series of images unravels how people intertwine their personal connections with just a single tree.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A drug epidemic spread quickly during Post War Singapore. The exhibit displays the tools used to smoke opium, and I love how intricate these historic objects are. For example the pipe which consists of the smoking tube, made of bamboo and the distillation bowl which is usually made of terracotta or porcelain.
Tumblr media
I love these retro designs of the SMRT cards. It's so vibrant in color, so ahead of its time in design and it really captures the energy of Singapore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vintage postcards which captured the history of hawker centres, the historic Raffles hotel, famous landmarks, etc. I love how a photograph can transport us to a certain time period just by looking at it.

How to get away while sheltering in place
By Allie Smaha (Alpha Omicron Chapter alumna)
I vividly remember when I became aware of COVID-19. I was sitting with my husband in our London hotel restaurant, watching the news headlines tick by. It was a few days before the Chinese New Year and the last night of our two-week dream vacation. As we made the trek home to Des Moines, Iowa, we noticed the small signs in busy airports of what would soon become everyone’s new normal—masked staff and other precautions meant to keep us safe and help slow what we soon learned was a quickly spreading virus.
Tumblr media
Pictured: Allie and her husband Ryan touring Stamford Bridge, the Chelsea FC stadium.
A month and a half later, we started sheltering in place for what’s now been 64 days and counting. Just two weeks into our social distancing, we were forced to cancel our upcoming June Alaska cruise—another bucket list trip for my grandma’s 80th birthday. Her last planned vacation—ever—deemed no longer safe to embark on.
Chances are, my story is not so different than yours. Zeta Days across the country were canceled or postponed (including the first joint Iowa and Nebraska Zeta Day my sisters and I had been excitedly planning). Convention trips moved virtual. Girls trips with Zeta sisters and vacations with family canceled or postponed indefinitely.
While we can’t go on our ideal vacations yet, we can get away while sheltering in place and minimizing the time we spend in public.
Plan your dream trip virtually with your sisters.
We can’t physically go to our dream destinations, but we can still research them and plan all the activities we’d do there. Grab your favorite snacks and host a video call with your travel buddies. You’ll be set with a plan when it’s safe to travel again. If you’re searching for inspiration, the Zetas Who Love to Travel group is a great place to start.
Tumblr media
Go on an adventure in your own backyard.
Get out of the house and explore nearby nature that’s new to you. State and local parks, outdoor botanical gardens and bike trails can all be great places to explore while keeping an appropriate distance from others (as long as they’re open). If they aren’t, maybe now is your chance to become a plant mom with a houseplant or a backyard garden.
Take a virtual vacation.
There’s a great big world out there, and you can reach it from the comfort of your home. Virtually visit a national park, a zoo or aquarium, or one of the many museums that make their collections available online.
Tumblr media
Pictured: A photo Allie took from one of London’s tallest buildings (The Shard) if you want to virtually visit that too!
Treat yourself to a staycation.
This one requires a little preplanning, but you can replicate many of the fun things about traveling right at home. Order takeout from a new-to-you local restaurant. Put on your go-to travel attire (Okay, let’s be real, we have that on already.). Then, settle in for an afternoon or evening with your go-to travel activities. Read a book on the deck instead of the beach. Replace a museum trip by watching a documentary. Treat yourself to an at-home pampering session (complete with face masks and bath bombs) instead of a spa trip. You get the idea!
Tumblr media
Escape in a good book.
My favorite way to “get away” is curled up on my couch, immersed in a fictional world. As Mason Cooley said, “Books give us some place to go when we have to stay where we are,” and I couldn’t agree more. Pick up a childhood favorite that brings you comfort (I’ve been rereading Harry Potter.) or explore something new from a genre you know you love. Looking for a good read you can talk about with others? Check out the ZTA Virtual Book Club group on Facebook!
Tumblr media
I’m still itching to travel as soon as it’s safe to do so, but these small ways to get away while sheltering in place are satisfying my travel bug, for now. And I hope they’ll help you, too.

Largest Flower in The World
A plant with no leaves, no roots, no stem and the biggest flower in the world sounds like the stuff of comic books or science fiction.
'It is perhaps the largest and most magnificent flower in the world' was how Sir Stamford Raffles described his discovery in 1818 of Rafflesia arnoldii, modestly named after himself and his companion, surgeon-naturalist Dr James Arnold. This jungle parasite of south-east Asia holds the all-time record-breaking bloom of 106.7 centimetres (3 ft 6 in) diameter and 11 kilograms (24 lb) weight, with petal-like lobes an inch thick. It is one of the rarest plants in the world and on the verge of extinction.
Tumblr media
This rare flower is found in the rainforests of Indonesia. It can grow to be 3 feet across and weigh up to 15 pounds! It is a parasitic plant, with no visible leaves, roots, or stem. When in bloom, the Rafflesia emits a repulsive odor, similar to that of rotting meat. This odor attracts insects that pollinate the plant. As if size and rarity weren't enough, Rafflesia is also one of the world's most distasteful plants, designed to imitate rotting meat or dung.
As Rafflesia is one of the rarest plants on earth, people started to study them since 1929. They tried to cultivate the plant artificially, as the plant takes 9 to 21 months until a bud flowers - only to last for less than a week. But all the experiments ended in failure.
There are at least 13 species of Rafflesia, but two of them have already been unsighted since the Second World War and are presumed extinct, and the record-holding Rafflesia arnoldii is facing extinction. To make matters worse, no one has ever cultivated Rafflesia in a garden or laboratory.
Tumblr media
For years, the Rafflesia has fascinated humans by its gigantic size and horrible odor. Since sightings of this flower are rare as the flower only stays for a few days after blooming, many explorers, botanists, and curious tourists have embarked on long expeditions to catch a glimpse of this flower. The Rafflesia arnoldii is regarded to be one of Indonesia’s national flowers. A wax model of the flower has also been exhibited at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.
To be fair, though, Rafflesia's lifestyle isn't so ridiculous. After all, few other plants feed so well that they have evolved monstrous flowers. But now that logging is cutting down tropical forests, the precious vine that Rafflesia depends on is disappearing, and Rafflesia along with it. The years of living dangerously are becoming all too clear.

Blog Post #4: Changing Mindsets to Change the Course of Climate Change
10/5/21
Growing up as a kid in suburban northern Virginia, I spent most of my childhood outdoors; climbing trees, wading through and fishing in the creek, making “soup” out of mud and wild onions. Getting older, and watching the environment I spent my childhood in change for the worse, has made me realize I took my childhood for granted; many of the trees I used to climb near my house have since been cleared for new housing developments, and the creek experienced an oil spill from a nearby overturned tanker that caused a “dead zone” in the stream for years. Even the beach I spent my childhood visiting, which is supposed to be the site of an environmental preservation initiative, has been gradually shrinking over the years as a result of erosion and rising sea levels. When I think about the fact that I may be part of the last generation to experience the environment as it was, I become despondent. The reality that in my lifetime we may experience an environmental apocalypse has begun sinking in.
According to chapter 25, people’s environmental worldview is what shapes their perception of their relationship with the earth and their responsibility to its preservation. For years, the general consensus (especially among capitalists) was that the earth was a source of infinite resources that exist to serve human advancement and development, or the human-centered worldview (Miller, 637). It is this worldview that has, in part, led us to many scientific discoveries about the world around us. However, it is also this worldview that has led us to the situation we are in today; to the point where we have surpassed several ecological tipping points, and we are well on our way to surpassing several more (Miller, 638).
I believe that part of the reason why the situation with our environment has gotten so bad is because the people responsible for polluting have not been forced to come face to face with the consequences of their actions, and have been able to reap the benefits for far too long. Meanwhile, the people who are the least responsible, and have been able to enjoy the benefits of the environment the least, are the ones who have had to deal with the consequences of environmental degradation the most (Bullard). Growing up in Virginia, I recognize that I was able to have an excellent, immersive relationship with the environment around me; many people around the world are unable to say the same, and I believe it is for this reason that many people have developed a skewed environmental worldview.
According to Leov, existing in nature, especially as a child, is integral for the proper physical and emotional development of individuals. He refers to this environmental deprivation as “nature-deficit-disorder”, and argues it is responsible for the disturbing uptick in childhood ailments, such as obesity, attention disorders, and mental illnesses. I believe it is also for this reason that many people have developed a human-centric worldview; the only exposure many people have with nature often involves urbanized parks, many of which are unable to provide refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city. The perception of nature for many individuals is that it exists only to serve humans.
I believe that in order to change the course we are on in terms of environmental degradation, it will require a revolution of mindset, as a result of changed experiences. According to Leopold “We can be ethical only in relation to something we can see, feel, understand, love, or otherwise have faith in” (214). In order to get people to develop an earth-centered environmental worldview, as opposed to a human-centered-worldview, we must demonstrate to people what real, unobstructed nature looks like, so that they may see the ways in which they are connected to the earth, the trees, and the all the living organisms that inhabit it. After all, the differences in DNA between us and the species around us only differ by a few genes.
Living in the Bronx, I often see people openly littering. My first instinct is to get angry at them. However, I have to remind myself that, for many people, their perception of the environment is contained to these few blocks, with the closest unobstructed environment being the New York Botanical Garden. It is not their fault that they view a city filled with concrete and trash to be their personal trash can. In order to convince people like these, as well as the people who are responsible for creating the waste in the first place, we need to demonstrate to people their direct connection to the environment. We can achieve this by expanding urban greenspaces as well as creating opportunities for people in urban environments to visit more remote, verdant greenspaces. Additionally, we must find a way to force polluters to come face to face with the consequences of their pollution, even if that means bringing them to sites of environmental degradation as a result of human development. All in all, in order to have any hope of stopping climate change it's going to require a revolution of people’s mindsets
Word Count: 854 (I plan on cutting it down for my final midterm)
