Joop van den Ende: 'Ons vak wordt besmeurd'

Joop van den Ende (81) vindt het heel erg jammer dat 'het mooiste vak dat er is', werk in de televisiewereld, nu 'besmeurd' wordt door de onthullingen over grensoverschrijdend gedrag. Dat zei hij aan tafel in de talkshow 'Humberto'. "En het is misschien even nodig. Of het de juiste weg is geweest, wie weet het?", sprak Joop.

Het rapport-Van Rijn over grensoverschrijdend gedrag bij de publieke omroep werd donderdag gepresenteerd. Vooral het programma De Wereld Draait Door en presentator Matthijs van Nieuwkerk kwamen fors aan bod. Afgelopen weekend zei Joop in Trouw al dat BNNVARA meer had moeten doen om grensoverschrijdend gedrag te voorkomen. De theater- en tv-magnaat vindt dat de presentator het slachtoffer is van "slecht leiderschap".

Ook André van Duin, die aan de tentoonstelling van Joop meewerkte, zat bij Humberto en reageerde kort op de onthullingen. "Het is heel lastig. We weten niet alle ins en outs", zei hij. "Ik ken Matthijs alleen maar als een hele aardige, lieve en gezellige man. Maar het gaat niet alleen om Matthijs, het gaat over heel veel mensen."

Joop van den Ende denkt dat Geert Wilders absoluut niet in staat is om de premier van Nederland te worden. “Ik heb persoonlijk niks tegen hem, maar hij kan de boel niet bij elkaar houden.” Joop vindt het gedrag van Wilders storend. “Als je zeventien jaar lang een leider van de PVV hebt die álles gezegd heeft. ‘De Kamer is dit’, ‘de rechtsstaat is verkeerd’, die bevolkingsgroepen weggezet heeft, de fractievoorzitter van de VVD huilend op de kansel, die iedereen en alles beledigd heeft…”

Hij vervolgt: “Dat die opeens nu minister-president kan worden en om met meerdere partijen iets te leiden… Dat kán hij helemaal niet!”

Het verbaast Joop niets dat de formatie lijkt te zijn geklapt. “Ik verwachtte er helemaal niks van. De ABN Amro wilde ook samen met de ING. Fantastisch. Waarom is het niet doorgegaan? Omdat daar de twee algemeen directeuren twee ijdele kerels zijn die niet met elkaar door de bocht konden. De enige reden!”

Dat is hier ook het geval, meent hij. “Ik heb persoonlijk niks tegen Wilders. Dat is gewoon iemand die hard z’n werk doet, maar ik ben het totaal niet eens met wat hij zegt. Ik kijk naar leiderschap en hoe moet je een land leiden met de problemen die we hebben? Hoe moet je de boel bij elkaar houden als je dit soort tweets verstuurt?”

Joop van den Ende werd op 23 februari 1942 geboren in de Indische buurt in Amsterdam-Oost. In het katholieke arbeidersgezin was hij het vierde kind en een nakomertje. Al heel jong realiseerde hij zich dat hij het later anders zou willen. Hij nam spraak-, zang-, dans- en acteerlessen en had al jong een eigen cabaretgroepje. Met acts als Batman, conferencier en Tako de Clown probeerde hij als artiest voet aan de grond te krijgen. Maar zijn ambities waren groot, en al snel realiseerde hij zich dat hij op die manier de top en het grote succes niet zou behalen. Binnen de organisatorische kant van het artiestenvak schatte hij zijn kansen hoger in. Met een omweg langs twee feestartikelenwinkels begon hij in een hoek van de huiskamer zijn eerste boekingsbureautje 'Spotlight'.

Dat bureautje is via Joop van den Ende Produkties, Joop van den Ende Theaterproducties en Endemol uitgegroeid tot Stage Entertainment: een solide internationaal theaterbedrijf, door Joop van den Ende in 1998 opgericht. Het bedrijf heeft theaters in vele Europese landen, waar bekende internationale voorstellingen geprogrammeerd worden en produceert nieuwe originele musicals.

Een Leven Lang Theater vertelt het verhaal van Van den Endes carrière als producent op het gebied van theater, musical, revue, televisie en film en geeft inzicht in het enorme repertoire dat Joop van den Ende in vele decennia heeft opgebouwd. Via het menu bovenaan de pagina vindt u uitgebreide pagina's over het leven en de carrière van Joop van den Ende. Op deze 'introductiepagina' vindt u een kortere biografie.

Deze website wordt in februari 2012 aangeboden aan Joop van den Ende ter gelegenheid van zijn 70ste verjaardag. Initiatiefnemer is Theater Instituut Nederland. De website werd mede mogelijk gemaakt door bijdragen van Bureau Promotie Podiumkunsten, Het Concertgebouw, FOAM Amsterdam, Holland Festival, Interakt, Stedelijk Museum en Theater Instituut Nederland.

Van den Ende was dus te gast bij Humberto en hij had ook Pieter Omzicht uitgenodigd, maar ook André van Duin. Hij besloot de felle discussie met een gepaste en gekscherende opmerking: ‘Als Joop ergens niet meer uitkwam dan belde hij mij’.

We left the cabin about 9am, all but Kent headed out about the same time to do another hike (Kent had a slight fall on the way down yesterday and has an issue with his hand – very swollen, possibly broken fingers, but as a former wrestler – he’s tougher than the average guy).

 We drove through Breckenridge and Dillon – surprised by all the growth that had occurred in the 20+ years since I’d spent much time in Colorado.  The day grew warmer when we left the Fairplay / Alma area – they’ve had uncharacteristic wet and cold.

 Our evening destination was to see the musical duo “Moors and McCumber,” performing a concert at Kort McCumber’s land in the mountains outside Boulder. If you’ve followed my blogs, you might remember that they’re the duo that entertained us each night when we rafted the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho in 2020.  We saw them at a benefit concert for Music Makes a Difference, a Madsion based non-profit the night before we flew to Denver.  When we told Kort we were headed to Colorado the next day, he invited us to this concert – which was too good of an offer to pass up.

 We really had the day to kill, so we took the back roads to Boulder, leaving I-70 at the Idaho Springs exit.  We climbed the Central City parkway (paved with casino money), and when we got to Central City a festival was getting underway so we stopped and walked around a bit. It was going to be a beer festival and was just being set up.  We poked around and walked into an antique store and chatted with the clerk there about town history (gold mining, ghost town resurrected when Colorado government allowed gambling there and a few other places in Colorado in the 1970’s).

 From there, we drove through the mountains and to a funky town, Nederland – from there, along the beautiful Boulder Creek, through Boulder Canyon to the city of Boulder.  We parked and walked to the Pearl Street area, like Madison’s State Street but without the buses and delivery vans (no traffic at all).  The day had turned HOT, and there were many people out – families and college students just back from the summer.  We had lunch in a streetside Mexican café with awesome people watching, then walked to street, stopping for ice cream, and spending about an hour in a really cool bookshop!

 We walked back to our car and drove to a park along Boulder Creek.  When we’d driven by earlier, I saw people carrying inner-tubes up the path along the creek.  We sat in the shade and watched people tubing past – quite entertaining!!

 Back in the car, we drove about 40 minutes up windy mountain roads to Kort and Amy’s place – a beautiful spot of land along a little creek.  They’d set up a stage for the concert, and we had about an hour to meet other folks and shop in Amy’s jewelry boutique (www.cowboys-sweetheart.com).  We met some really interesting other M&M fans – most of whom were local to the area, or nearby Gold Hill, which sounds like an interesting place!!  We’ve heard M&M perform about a dozen times, but there was nothing like hearing them in this environment!  They had a talented young kid “open” for them, Piatt Pund.  Kort said they met him when Kort’s sister was teaching Piatt the violin.  He’s a super-talented multi-instrument playing young man – currently going to school in NYC – I have a feeling we’ll hear about him in the future.

 It was a great evening, wrapping up about 8pm, so we said good-bye and headed to the Denver Airport.  We stopped at the hotel and dropped our bags, then dropped off the rental car and took the rental car to the airport hoping to catch the hotel shuttle.  That didn’t exactly work, so we gave up and took an Uber to the hotel about midnight.  Great night’s sleep – easy travel home on Sunday, arriving home about 5pm.

Dit persoonlijk profiel bestaat vooral uit reflecteren op het afgelopen jaar, op bepaalde ontwikkelingen, ambities en keuzes. Veel leesplezier - Yara Laoutaris

Iets langer dan een jaar geleden, ontstond de Covid-19 paniek in Nederland. Ongeveer op de helft van periode 3 in leerjaar 2, waren alle studenten verplicht om thuis te werken. Gingen de lessen door? Gingen de tentamens wel door? Was het mogelijk om het jaar überhaupt wel af te maken? Was het nog wel mogelijk om een stageplek te vinden? Er heerste zoveel vragen die op dat moment niet beantwoord konden worden. Inmiddels zijn we een jaar verder en is het thuiswerken het nieuwe normaal voor iedereen.

Na de zomervakantie, in 2020, was het tijd om stage te lopen. Wat was het ontzettend lastig om een stageplek te vinden. Ik weet exact welke kant ik op zou willen gaan met FM. Ik houd heel erg van de entertainment branche. Ik zag dat er stagiaires gezocht werden voor Ahoy, het Afas circustheater, Zuidplein theater en het Luxor theater. Eenn stageplek in deze sector bleef vanwege Corona uit. Tientallen sollicitatiebrieven zijn de deur uit gestuurd, helaas zonder effect. Henrike Meijboom kon mij gelukkig helpen aan een stage bij Facilicom. Dit nam heel erg veel stress bij mij weg, omdat ik mij een mislukkeling voelde dat het vinden van de stage mij maar niet lukte.

Helaas werd deze stage last minute gecanceld. In de laatste twee weken van de zomervakantie moest ik halsoverkop een nieuwe stageplek zoeken. Na veel moeite was ik aangenomen bij Coolblue. Ik was ontzettend blij dat het was gelukt en dat ik alsnog kon beginnen aan een derdejaars stage.

Naarmate de weken vorderde, merkte ik dat ik steeds slechter in mijn vel begon te zitten. Dit begon al heftiger in april 2020, maar in september piekte dit enorm. Toen de besmettingen alsmaar oplopend waren, werd er ook nog eens besloten dat het niet meer was toegestaan om op kantoor te werken. Aan het begin van de stageperiode, de belangrijkste periode om in te werken in een organisatie, werd het ineens verplicht om thuis te werken.

Dit besluit nekte mij persoonlijk. Ik werd overwelmd door onzekerheid: hoe moest ik nu doorkrijgen wie- wie is, wie waar verantwoordelijk voor is, hoe de systemen werken, hoe ik contact met mensen kon krijgen? Nog veel meer factoren hebben er uiteindelijk voor gezorgd dat ik de belangrijkste keuze heb gemaakt van dit jaar, om mijn stage stop te zetten. Dit voelde enorm als falen en heeft ervoor gezorgd dat ik mij meerdere weken niet fijn heb gevoeld.

Bij deze twee belangrijke keuzes heb ik vooral de facility manager van Coolblue en mijn SLC- coach Henrike Meijboom betrokken. Dit waren de twee personen die het meeste verstand hadden van de huidige situatie en gevolgen/ consequenties. Zij konden mij beiden goed adviseren wat er in deze periode belangrijk was om te doen. Na vele gesprekken met de facility manager van Coolblue en een meeting met Henrike, heb ik de uiteindelijke knoop doorgehakt.

Hoewel het stoppen met de stage zou moeten voelen als een opluchting, ervaarde ik dit niet. De paniekaanvallen werden erger, het huilen werd erger, ik deed niks meer overdag, ik sliep niet meer 's nachts, ik had echt nergens meer zin in. Ik heb kort erna de keuze gemaakt om hulp te zoeken. Tot nu toe heeft dit nog niet heel erg geholpen: de wachtlijsten zijn lang, het is druk, afspraken worden continue verzet. Ik heb er nog wel hoop in dat ik mij snel beter ga voelen. Corona heeft al mijn emoties en gevoelens enorm versterkt. Ik denk dat dit jaar voornamelijk alles vergroot is, niet per se erger geworden.

Inmiddels zijn we 5 maanden verder. Hoewel ik alles in eerste instantie zo negatief inzag, kan ik uiteindelijk ook positief naar dit traject kijken. Ik ben blij dat ik heb geluisterd naar mijn gevoel en niet door ben gegaan met school om anderen te pleasen. Ik ben blij dat ik dit inmiddels niet meer zie als falen, maar een half jaar om tot rust te komen en goed te zorgen voor mijzelf. Hoewel ik er nog niet ben, zijn er grote stappen gezet.

Voor het volgende schooljaar, waar ik begin met een minor en vervolgens de derdejaars stage ga doen, wil ik op tijd zoeken naar een stagebedrijf waar ik wel op locatie mag werken. Het is lastig om hier een vooruitzicht over te schetsen, aangezien we niet weten hoe komend jaar er uit gaat zien. Hopelijk ben ik dan ingeënt en kan het ‘normale’ leven weer beginnen. Ik merkte dat ik het al vrij spannend vond om stage te lopen, maar dit werd gewoon enorm versterkt door Covid-19. Ik denk dat ik bij een volgend stagebedrijf dit minder zal hebben. De stageperiode is in het tweede jaar namelijk ook prima verlopen en heb ik afgesloten met een mooi cijfer. Ik wil dit nog wel bespreken bij PsyQ, zodat ik ondersteuning krijg voor mijn faalangst.

De derde belangrijke keuze die ik heb gemaakt dit jaar vind ik lastig te beschrijven. Dit jaar is voor mij zo stilgevallen. Naast het stoppen met mijn stage en hulp zoeken, denk ik dat het toch de keuze is geweest om wel weer te beginnen aan mijn derdejaars vakken. Ik vind het vrij pittig, maar tot nu toe gaat het mij redelijk af. Ik ben blij dat er veel projectopdrachten zijn, waarbij je veel kunt terugvallen op andere studenten. De andere vakken gaan tot op heden ook goed. Het is nu vooral afwachten op de resultaten.

Als ik naar mijn evaluatie van de drie of meer gemaakte keuzes kijk, valt mij op dat de rode draad is ‘voor mijzelf kiezen en goed luisteren naar mijn eigen gevoel’. Ik had zeker door kunnen gaan, ik stond ook daadwerkelijk voor die keuze, maar ik denk dat ik er dan uiteindelijk slechter vanaf was gekomen.

Belangrijk in een komende werkomgeving, is dat ik daar aanwezig mag zijn. Dit is echt wat afgelopen jaar duidelijk is geworden voor mij. Dit geldt zowel op school als op mijn stageplek. Ik ben niet gemaakt voor thuiswerken, hoe ik de omgeving ook inricht. Ik raak snel afgeleid, in mijn kamer en beneden in de woonkamer. Mijn jongste broertje is 10 jaar jonger dan ik en zit in een hele andere levensfase dan ik. Het is soms heel lastig om te werken als er vriendjes over de vloer komen van hem of wanneer mijn middelste broertje weer met keiharde muziek onder de douche staat terwijl ik zelf een tentamen heb. 

‘Vroeger’ kon ik vaak tot 22.00 op school werken, ongestoord, in een fijne en rustige omgeving. Ik kan het vaak thuis niet opbrengen om aan school te werken. Ik hoop dat ik snel ingeënt word en dat dit snel weer mogelijk wordt. Gelukkig begin ik zo eerst met een minor na de zomervakantie. Ik kijk enorm uit naar deze minor. Ik had mij in eerste instantie ingeschreven voor de minor Politiekunde, maar helaas was deze al vol. Ik ga komend jaar de minor Real Estate en FM doen, daar heb ik ook enorm veel zin in. Ik hoop dat de schoolreis naar Londen ook doorgaat. Londen is echt mijn favoriete stad, dat zou een enorme ‘oplader’ zijn voor mij.

De feedback die ik heb gekregen op mijn stageplek is dat ik niet zo onzeker hoef te zijn over mijn kennis en kunde. Ik wil zelf graag gelijk alles kunnen als ik ga stagelopen. Ik vergeet soms dat ik gewoon nog een studente ben, die maar 8 weken praktijkervaring heeft. Ik leg de lat soms een beetje te hoog voor mijzelf, waardoor ik continue het gevoel heb dat ik niet aan bepaalde verwachtingen voldoe. Hierdoor raak ik in paniek en denk ik gelijk dat de stage niet zal gaan lukken.

Om een bewuste keuze te maken voor de minor en een stagebedrijf en afstudeeropdracht is het verstandig een goed zelfbeeld te hebben en verschillende opties te bekijken en vergelijken.

Het kiezen van een minor was voor mij totaal niet ingewikkeld. Ik wist vanaf het moment dat ik begon met de opleiding dat ik de minor Politiekunde wilde doen. Ik vind veiligheidsdiensten ontzettend interessant en uitdagend. Ik zou hier in de toekomst ook zeker werkzaam in willen zijn. Ik heb altijd al een fascinatie gehad voor de politie. Ik mocht een keer meelopen met de hondenbrigade in Rotterdam en dat heeft zo ontzettend veel indruk op mij gemaakt.

Als tweede keuze had ik de minor van Hogeschool Rotterdam in gedachten, zoals eerder benoemd in mijn profiel. Ik vind huisvesting en de inrichting daarvan ook heel interessant. Dit is uiteindelijk ook de minor geworden, aangezien de minor Politiekunde vol zit. Ik vind makelaardij ook heel interessant. Een van mijn beste vrienden is op zoek naar een woning en ik ga vaak met hem mee een woning bezichtigen. Ik vind het heel leuk om mee te gaan en om te kijken wat een makelaar te zeggen heeft. Ik weet daarom zeker dat een minor Real Estate & FM geschikt gaat zijn voor mij en ik ben zeer tevreden met mijn tweede keuze.

Het einde van mijn HBO-studie komt steeds dichterbij. Hoewel ik een half jaar studievertraging heb, ben ik nog wel gemotiveerd. Ik wil snel beginnen met mijn minor, stage en afstuderen. Ik ben een ben de vakken en projecten een beetje beu. Ik onderschat zeker de moeilijkheidsgraad van de derdejaars stage en het afstuderen niet, maar ik vind het qua schoolwerk met andere studenten wel prima zo en ik wil graag kijken wat ik zelf inmiddels allemaal al onder de knie heb en niet. Aangezien de eerste keer stage (jaar 3) niet is gelukt, ben ik er extra op gebrand om mijn kwaliteiten als facility manager te ontwikkelen. Hoewel het geen leuk jaar is geweest, ik ben (met ups en downs) nog gemotiveerd om de opleiding te halen en het werkveld te betreden.

Mijn concrete en realistische ambitie voor de komende 3 jaar zouden zijn om allereest mijn derdejaars stage te halen. Ik ervaar nog steeds veel last door mijn faalangst. Ik merk wanneer ik een tegenslag heb, doordat ik bijvoorbeeld een tentamen of opdracht niet haal, dit als een enorme klap aankomt en ik daardoor vaak een week nodig heb om weer in het gareel te komen. Ik wil het idee van falen accepteren, dat hoort bij het leven.

Daarnaast hoop ik dat ik dat ik in ieder geval mijn depressie een plek kan gaan geven. Ik wil niet dat deze factoren een te grote rol gaan spelen in mijn presteren. Dat zou ik zo zonde vinden. Ik hoop gewoon dat ik mijn hoofd rustig kan houden en blijf genieten van wat ik aan het doen ben. Ik ben heel erg trots dat ik uberhaupt HBO ben gaan doen. Ik heb voor het eerst, na de middelbare, dat ik echt op mijn plek zit.

Ik probeer ook niet te veel na te denken over wat er allemaal komen gaat. Momenteel vind ik het hier en nu het belangrijkst.

Om SLC af te sluiten, heb ik samen met andere meiden een presentatie gegeven. Aangezien ik deze niet kan toevoegen aan deze pagina, staan hier de screenshots van de presentatie:

Wat ik meeneem uit deze sessie is dat iedereen zich heel erg heeft ontwikkeld op persoonlijk en ‘zakelijk’ vlak. Ik heb iedereen ruim een jaar niet gezien of gesproken. Ik vond het leuk om te horen hoe de stageperiode bij iedereen is verlopen en hoe iedereen is gegroeid en ‘volwassener’ is geworden. Door dit van anderen te horen kon ik ook goed reflecteren op mijn eigen voortgang. In eerste instantie was ik vrij nerveus, naar mijn idee had iedereen zijn of haar stage wel vlekkeloos gehaald. Nu dat we twee/ drie maanden verder zijn, blijkt dat dus niet het geval. Er zijn meerdere studenten die het niet gehaald hebben of ook last hadden van de gevolgen van Covid-19. 

Ik ben tot de realisatie gekomen, niet alleen door deze sessie, maar ook door vrienden en familie, dat het niet erg is om vertraging op te lopen. Iedereen bewandelt zijn of haar eigen pad. Ik werd er voorheen heel verdrietig of onzeker van als anderen iets beter konden doen, sneller waren dan ik of het proces met minder problemen doorgingen. Door Covid-19 heb ik heel erg geleerd om mij op mijzelf tijd te gunnen. Ik heb dit ook aan mijn naasten gevraagd, hoe zij over mij denken. Hieruit zijn de 360 feedback modellen gekomen.

Ik kan mij goed vinden in de feedback van mijn familie en vrienden. ik ben nog heel erg zoekende naar wat ik later wil ‘worden’. Ik heb mijn diploma voor winkelmanager behaald voor het HBO, dus mocht ik de keuze willen maken om in een winkel te willen gaan werken na het HBO is dat zeker mogelijk. De dingen die zij ook aanraden kloppen ook wel. 

Ik ga nu in ieder geval de laatste periode tegemoet. Mijn doel is gewoon om zo veel mogelijk vakken te behalen zodat de achterstand niet zo groot is voor komend jaar. Hopelijk is het in de zomer weer mogelijk om lekker te reizen, want ik kan wel een vakantie gebruiken.

The 65th Annual Drama Desk Awards will be announced on "Stars in the House" tomorrow, Tuesday, April 21, at 2pm ET.

Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley, the hosts of the virtual daily series benefiting the Actors Fund, will announce the nominees. Tune in at www.starsinthehouse.com. Following the live stream, the complete list of nominees will be available on DramaDeskAwards.com.

Drama Book Shop to Reopen, With Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Help

Last fall the Drama Book Shop shocked the theatre field when it announced that due to a substantial rent hike on its 40th Street storefront in midtown Manhattan, it would close its doors. But after a large outpouring of support from the community, Hamilton composer Lin-Manuel Miranda has stepped in and taken over ownership of the 101-year-old institution. He plans to reopen the new Drama Book Shop in March 2020, just a block away from the old book shop, on 266 West 39th Street.

“The Drama Book Shop is the heart and soul of the New York theatre community,” Miranda said in a statement. “It’s been an oasis in midtown for a century of storytellers and theatre fans alike—a safe space to gather, to learn, and to find great books and music. I found my collaborators there. I wrote drafts of In the Heights there. Freestyle Love Supreme was born there. I made sure the first book-signing of Hamilton: The Revolution was held there. The Drama Book Shop is home.”

It had seemed that by late 2018, the Book Shop (which stocks playscripts, biographies, educational materials, and periodicals like American Theatre) would fall prey to the Amazon effect, with more people buying scripts online rather than going to a physical store.

But Miranda teamed up with Hamilton director Thomas Kail, producer Jeffrey Seller, and theatre owner James L. Nederlander to take over ownership of the Drama Book Shop and find it a new home. They also received assistance from Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment commissioner Julie Menin.

“I was in the Drama Book Shop most days of the week from December 2001 until May 2005,” said Kail in a statement. “My career started there. My life in New York City started there. I am proud to be part of this group that will reintroduce this vital source of inspiration for our city, and present countless others the same opportunity that it provided me and so many others.”

The new Drama Book Shop’s storefront will be designed by set designer David Korins. Like the old location, it will include a basement where artists can workshop new projects. Unlike the former space, it will also sell coffee.

Says Miranda: “To the next generation of dramatists, actors, directors, composers, choreographers, designers, and theatre enthusiasts: The stage is set…Come in. Discover. Enjoy.”

Pretty Woman: The Musical to Release Cast Recording

The new musical begins previews at the Nederlander July 20.

Pretty Woman: The Musical, which begins previews on Broadway July 20, will release an original Broadway cast recording. Producer Paula Wagner is teaming up with Atlantic Records to release the album, which will be produced by the musical's composers, Grammy winner Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance.

The Pretty Woman cast recording will be available for pre-order beginning August 9.

Following a world premiere in Chicago earlier this year, Pretty Woman: The Musical arrives on Broadway at the Nederlander Theatre. Directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, the contemporary stage adaptation of the popular romantic comedy from the ’90s stars Samantha Barks as Vivian alongside Andy Karl as Edward.

Pretty Woman: The Musical will officially open August 16. Based on the movie about a star-crossed meeting between a prostitute and a disillusioned businessman, the stage musical features a book co-written by the film’s director, the late Garry Marshall, and screenwriter J.F. Lawton, and music by Adams and Vallance.

“It’s fantastic to be working with Atlantic Records on the original Broadway cast recording,” said Adams in a statement. “I’m a huge fan of the label and its incredible legacy, and what they’ve been doing in the Broadway arena over the past few years has been extraordinary.”

"It's no small thing putting 30 people in a studio and recording an entire cast album while performing eight shows a week!” added Vallance. “Our Atlantic Records team is incredibly experienced and knowledgeable, and they’ve been a dream to work with throughout the whole process.”

Completing the principal cast on Broadway are Orfeh as Kit, Eric Anderson as Mr. Thompson, Ezra Knight as James Morse, and Jason Danieley as Philip Stuckey.
