The US' 2,000-year-old mystery mounds - BBC Travel
Constructed by a mysterious civilisation that left no written records, the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks are a testament to indigenous sophistication.
Autumn leaves crackled under our shoes as dozens of eager tourists and I followed a guide along a grassy mound. We stopped when we reached the opening of a turf-topped circle, which was formed by another wall of mounded earth. We were at The Octagon, part of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, a large network of hand-constructed hills spread throughout central and southern Ohio that were built as many as 2,000 years ago. Indigenous people would come to The Octagon from hundreds of miles away, gathering regularly for shared rituals and worship.
"There was a sweat lodge or some kind of purification place there," said our guide Brad Lepper, the senior archaeologist for the Ohio History Connection's World Heritage Program (OHC), as he pointed to the circle. I looked inside to see a perfectly manicured lawn – a putting green. A tall flag marked a hole at its centre.
The Octagon is currently being used as a golf course.  ...
...  However, after the Hopewell Culture gradually began to disappear starting around 500 CE, other indigenous peoples stepped in to become caretakers of the land. One of those groups was the Shawnee Tribe, which called Ohio home before they were forcibly removed west of the Mississippi River in the 1830s.
"We may not have been responsible for building or creating them, but I know that my ancestors lived there, and that my ancestors protected them and respected them," said Chief Glenna Wallace of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, who believes that other tribes should have a role in the future of protecting the Hopewell Earthworks and communicating their cultural importance.
However, receiving Unesco status is a difficult, bureaucratic process. While sitting on land owned by the OHC, The Octagon is under the control of the Moundbuilders Country Club. The club negotiated an unprecedented lease that extends until 2078 and only allows visitors to walk the mounds four times a year. The rest of the time, visitors can access a platform in the car park to view a very small section of the property. OHC is currently suing to evict the country club (with compensation) through eminent domain. The lower courts ruled in favour of the historical society, but the Ohio Supreme Court is hearing an appeal. If OHC can't guarantee public access, this may affect Unesco's decision.
While a Unesco designation wouldn't entail the return of land or reparations, it does mean greater local representation and education about Ohio's Native American history. It also means more indigenous stakeholders, like the Shawnee, telling that story from an indigenous perspective for future generations.
"I just want people to know about it," said Chief Wallace, "I want people to be able to see it. I want people to be able to visit it and want people to realise that it is a cultural phenomenon. That it's priceless."

It's possible they aren't from America
Yes that’s very possible and I’m gonna hope that’s their explanation. I was just confused because this is the second conversation we’ve had about whether Rafe is or isn’t something (the first being if he’s a golfer) and neither conversation makes sense because both are facts that are explicitly depicted or stated in the show 😭 like we saw Rafe out on the course with Topper where he proceeded to beat Pope with a golf club and then Saran and John B took a ferry from OBX to UNC chapel hill (which btw isn’t possible because chapel hill is smack dab in the middle of the state with no waterways leading to it, but I digress) so like… I’m just- whatever 💀
Well the golf conversation wasn't about whether he is one. An anon felt it was odd that he is one but I and several other people were like he's a rich southern white boy who probably belongs in a frat. Golf checks out for him. I can't picture Rafe playing any other sport tbh

Tudor City is an apartment complex located on the southern edge of Turtle Bay, on the East Side of Manhattan in New York City, near Turtle Bay's border with Murray Hill. Designed and developed by the Fred F. French Company, it lies on a low cliff, which is east of Second Avenue between 40th and 43rd Streets and overlooks First Avenue. Construction commenced in 1926, making it the first residential skyscraper complex in the world. Tudor City was one of the first, largest, and most important examples of a planned middle-class residential community in New York City. It is named for its Tudor Revival architecture. The complex is a New York City designated landmark district and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The 13-building complex consists of 11 housing cooperatives, one rental apartment building, and one short-term hotel; these buildings collectively house 5,000 people. Most of Tudor City's buildings are arranged around 41st and 43rd Streets, which slope upward east of Second Avenue; the eastern ends of the two streets are connected by Tudor City Place, which crosses over 42nd Street. Two parks flank 42nd Street, and there was once an 18-hole miniature golf course in the southern park. The buildings generally contain stone, brick, and terracotta facades, as well as ornate Tudor-style details. The Fred F. French Company advertised Tudor City heavily, erecting large signs on the roofs of two buildings on 42nd Street, which could be seen from blocks away.
Before Tudor City was constructed, tenements and slums dominated the area. Following the development of the nearby Grand Central Terminal and office buildings during the early 20th century, Fred F. French began planning a residential enclave in Midtown Manhattan. French announced plans for Tudor City in December 1925, and the first 12 structures were completed in phases between October 1927 and late 1930. The section of 42nd Street through Tudor City was widened in the 1950s with the construction of the nearby United Nations headquarters. The final building in the complex, 2 Tudor City Place, was finished in 1956, and the French Company sold the Hotel Tudor in 1963. Harry Helmsley bought most of the remaining buildings in 1970 and resold them in 1984 to Philip Pilevsky and Francis J. Greenburger, who converted most of these structures to co-op apartments.
The complex contains 12 apartment buildings, named Prospect Tower, Tudor Tower, Windsor Tower, Woodstock Tower, Hatfield House, the Manor, the Hermitage, the Cloister, Essex House, Haddon Hall, and Hardwicke Hall; it also includes a hotel, the Hotel Tudor. Woodstock Tower, in the center of the complex, is the tallest tower of the group, and was originally topped by a flèche, a gothic spire. Tudor City's original shops included three restaurants (providing room service for a fee), grocery, liquor, and drug stores, a barber shop, and beauty parlor. Services included a post office, indoor playground, private nursery, maids, laundry and valet service, private guards, garage, a furniture repair and rug cleaning service, and a radio engineer who would repair and connect aerials. Residents published their own magazine, and there were also organizations such as a camera club. The enclave also contained such amenities as an ice-skating rink and tennis courts, in addition to a library, babysitting service, and bowling alley. Prospect Tower and Tudor Tower both contained two rooftop decks, while the Manor contained another roof deck; there was also a water playground for children.
Due to their distinctive architectural style, Tudor City has been heavily featured in television in film. Appearances include The Godfather Part III, Scarface, Taxi Driver, and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy.

Biden turns 80 as election talk swirls (The Hill) Questions about Joe Biden’s age have loomed over his presidency ever since he entered the White House. On Sunday, Biden will reach a major milestone when he is expected to spend his 80th birthday quietly with his family, many of whom will be at the White House to mark another occasion: His granddaughter Naomi’s wedding. His rivals want to cast the president as lacking the energy and mental acuity needed for the job. While Biden takes flack for his age from the GOP, former President Trump is only four years younger and has announced a bid for reelection. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is 89. Ronald Reagan, who was 69 years old when he was sworn into his first term, was also faced with questions about his age, but turned it to his advantage. During one of the presidential debates with Mondale, Reagan said “I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.”
Western US cities to remove decorative grass amid drought (AP) A group of 30 agencies that supply water to homes and businesses throughout the western United States has pledged to rip up lots of decorative grass to help keep water in the over-tapped Colorado River. The agreement signed Tuesday by water agencies in Southern California, Phoenix and Salt Lake City and elsewhere illustrates an accelerating shift in the American West away from well-manicured grass that has long been a totem of suburban life, having taken root alongside streets, around fountains and between office park walkways. The grass-removal pledge targets turf that people don’t work on, like in front of strip malls, in street medians or at the entrance to neighborhoods. It doesn’t mean cities plan to rip up grass at golf courses, parks or in backyards, though some may pay homeowners to voluntarily replace their lawns with more drought-resistance landscaping.
Gang Warfare Cripples Haiti’s Fight Against Cholera (NYT) To reach the hospital, the mothers traveled the front lines of a gang war, bringing sick babies during lulls in gun battles and passing corpses along the way. They had no choice: Cholera, resurgent in Haiti, had come for their children. Cholera is soaring across the globe, as a record number of outbreaks have strained already reeling health systems in regions including Africa and South Asia. But cholera’s resurgence is a particularly cruel turn of fate in Haiti, which in February declared victory in eliminating the disease after battling it for more than a decade. Now, that triumph has been snatched away by the same forces plunging the nation into extraordinary depths of chaos and despair: armed groups that have turned vast swaths of the capital into lawless hellscapes of violence—and a government unable to take control. Now the health authorities cannot deliver the most basic care in poor neighborhoods where gangs have choked off access to the outside world, preventing doctors from entering and leaving the sick to die at home.
As Climate Protests Get Bolder, British Police Strike Back With New Powers (NYT) When environmental protesters recently stopped traffic on the M25 freeway that circles London, one journalist, Charlotte Lynch, was standing on a bridge above reporting on the latest of the group’s disruptive demonstrations for her radio station, LBC. But not for long. Ms. Lynch was swiftly handcuffed, searched and arrested after being questioned by two police officers about how she knew that the demonstration was taking place. Ms. Lynch said that she had shown a press card carried by journalists in Britain to identify themselves to the police, and explained that she had learned about where the protest would be held from social media. Nonetheless, she was held for five hours at a police station, where her DNA was collected and fingerprints were taken. As environmentalists and climate change activists ratchet up their protests in Britain, the authorities are responding in kind with robust actions that have raised concerns that long-enshrined freedoms are being eroded. Determined to crack down on the demonstrators, the government is giving the police new powers to tackle groups that have brought busy highways to a standstill, delayed infrastructure projects by tunneling beneath them, thrown soup at artwork and deflated the tires of SUVs. “What I’m seeing now is, I think, a sort of spiral—I’d almost say a radicalization,” said Adam Wagner, a civil liberties lawyer and author. “I think there’s a hardening on both sides—the police and the protesters—both of the actions and the reactions. I can see that dynamic and I’m pretty worried about it.”
As the War Rages, Ukraine Wages a Daunting Battle to Rebuild (NYT) Ukrainian efforts to stabilize some of the country’s battered electricity supply and make a dent in the seemingly endless task of demining swaths of the country offered a glimpse into the Herculean task that lies ahead off the battlefield. For the first time since Moscow this past week carried out its largest assault on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the national energy utility said on Saturday that it was again able to use planned, coordinated blackouts to keep the national grid stabilized rather than resorting to emergency power shutdowns. The first traces of power were also restored to the recently reclaimed southern city of Kherson, which was left without heat, running water and electricity by Russian troops, as they blew up and tore down critical infrastructure before retreating to territory east of the Dnipro River. Across fields strewn with mines and at power plants under the threat of Russian missiles, workers with the Ukrainian utility company, Ukrenergo, have raced to fix damage caused by attacks intended to heap suffering on the Ukrainian people. But repairs made this week can be destroyed by a new Russian assault the next. Ukraine’s government says that nearly half of Ukraine’s energy grid has been knocked out by recent Russian missile strikes. Kyiv also estimates that nearly 61,000 square miles of the country could be littered with land mines and other explosives. Some cities and towns lie in ruins.
Kyiv’s mayor: Extraordinary, in extraordinarily tough times (AP) The body armor propped against a radiator, ready for use, the spent shell casing adding to clutter on his desk, the boxing memorabilia and the sign asking visitors to leave firearms at his door: All shout that this is the office of an extraordinary mayor, in extraordinarily difficult times. And then there’s the plastic toy figure of a muscular boxer, with clenched fist raised—a reminder of how physically imposing, fearsome even, Vitali Klitschko was in his world title-winning, opponent-pummeling heavyweight boxing prime. As was also the case during his years as a professional prizefighter, the fight for survival he’s engaged in now is primal. But it’s more essential, too: To prevent power from going out entirely in his city of 3 million people, to ensure that families don’t freeze in the cold that winter’s onset is bringing, and to keep Ukraine’s hyper-digital capital hooked up to the outside world. In blacked-out Kyiv restaurants, diners feel their way through meals in near-darkness, served by waiters carrying candles. Residents wake in the dead of night—if that’s when it’s their turn to get a few hours of power again—to shower and do laundry. “Huge challenge,” Klitschko said.
Malaysia faces new crisis as poll delivers hung Parliament (AP) Malaysia tumbled into fresh political turmoil Sunday after a tightly contested general election delivered a hung Parliament with no clear winner and a surprising surge of support for an Islamist party. Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s reformist alliance secured the biggest gain with 82 out of 220 Parliamentary seats, but fell far short of a majority. Trailing close behind was former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s Malay-based Perikatan Nasional, or National Alliance with 73 seats. Among other key election losers was two-time former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who at 97 is leading a separate Malay movement. The outcome will now see horse-trading as both Muhyiddin and Anwar scramble to form the government.
For rivals Japan and China, the new space race is about removing junk (Washington Post) When China successfully towed a dead satellite into a “graveyard orbit” this year, it alarmed experts in Japan who have been trying to put their country at the forefront of the world’s expanding market in space-junk removal. Some interpreted the Chinese feat as a demonstration of an orbit-offensive capability—the ability to make unwelcome, close approaches to other satellites. The technology involved is a precursor to what Japan is racing to build. With commercial space activities taking off, the amount of junk orbiting the planet poses an increasing threat of collisions. Companies around the globe are working to develop the means to send this junk tumbling toward Earth so it will burn up in the extreme temperatures of reentry. No rules govern who is responsible for cleanup—or space-debris mitigation, as it is called—but Japan intends to play a key role in their development. The nation has stepped up cooperation with the United States in response to China’s growing space capabilities. Low Earth orbit is full of litter. Decades of exploration have left thousands of pieces of now-useless equipment and satellites that circle the planet at 17,500 miles an hour. Some are the size of a marble, others as big as a school bus.
Qatar to open Mideast’s first World Cup before leaders, fans (AP) Qatar prepared Sunday to open the Middle East’s first FIFA World Cup before global leaders and soccer fans now pouring into this energy-rich nation after being battered by a regional boycott and international criticism. Regardless of the outcome of Qatar versus Ecuador on the pitch, Doha already has drawn Saudi Arabia’s powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the opening ceremony and inaugural match of the tournament. That Prince Mohammed, whose nation had closed Qatar’s only land border to the world through the kingdom over a yearslong political dispute, will attend shows how far the rapprochement between the two nations has gone. Qatar’s state-run news agency announced Prince Mohammed’s presence in the country, as well as other world leaders. It said U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Senegalese President Macky Sall and Rwandan President Paul Kagame had arrived in Doha.
World’s longest-standing president seeks to extend 43-year rule (Reuters) Equatorial Guinea votes on Sunday in a general election in which President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, the world’s longest-standing president, is expected to extend his 43-year rule at the helm of the tiny oil-producing West African nation. Over 400,000 people registered to vote in the country of around 1.5 million. Voters will also cast ballots to elect 100 members of parliament for the lower house, 55 of the country’s 70 senators, and local mayors. Observers expect no surprises. The 80-year-old Obiang has always been elected with over 90% of votes in polls whose fairness international observers have questioned given longstanding complaints by rights groups over a lack of political freedom. Equatorial Guinea has had only two presidents since independence from Spain in 1968. Obiang ousted his uncle Francisco Macias Nguema in a coup in 1979.

Weekend: 11/12 June 2022
It was very late when I set out on Saturday, so I decided to catch a train up to New Barnet, then the 107 to Arkley, to repeat a walk I’ve done many times before – from Arkley Lane to Potters Bar via South Mimms service station. It was a beautiful evening – nicely warm but not too hot. However, as I approached Potters Bar, I had to cut it short, otherwise I’d have been getting to the pub well after 9.00 pm. I wished then that I’d set out earlier. But if I had, I’d have had to deal with the hotter, more oppressive middle of the day, which increasingly I find intolerable, and the walk – up Arkley Lane, through Saffron Green and round the side of Dyrham Park, then Wash Lane – would have been much less magical.
Beer-wise, I seem to have hit a lucky streak. I haven’t had a bad one in ages. At the Admiral Byng I had Elgood’s Cambridge Bitter. I’d not heard of it before, but on the pump clip it said it had won a prize, so I chose it, despite several other tempting ones being available. It was very good.
I promised myself that I’d start much earlier on Sunday, and while I did leave the house several hours earlier, I had to cross London by Underground (rather than a fast train), and I was delayed. At Manor House I found the station closed. I hadn’t seen anything about it on the TfL website but it turned out that selective industrial action by station staff was causing a number of stations to be shut for the day. Others I heard mentioned in announcements on trains were Russell Square and Pimlico.
With Manor House closed, I had to catch a bus to Finsbury Park, so it was nearly 4.00 pm by the time I reached West Acton.
I knew from past experience that I’d want a urination stop fairly early on, and in the midst of all the suburbia and heavily trafficked parks I figured that Hanger Hill Wood would be a good spot. It’s a very nice fragment of ancient woodland, with the busy North Circular on one side, but quiet within and hardly anyone around. However, there were no desire paths branching off the main paths, and the forest floor was fairly heavy on nettles, brambles and other, carpet-like undergrowth. I didn’t fancy getting stung or pricked, or stepping in hidden dog shit for that matter. After some searching, I was on the point of giving up, so I exited the wood at the southern end of Chatsworth Road and walked up the hill along the North Circular, but then found a little ingress point back into the wood, with a faint desire path leading to a spot that was perfect for my needs.
Continuing on my way, I felt a bit out of sorts, with some niggling pains at the back of my right leg. The pains seemed to go away when I walked fast, but kept coming back when I stood still to look at the map or take a photo.
Low on energy, I had a pleasant rest on a bench in the churchyard at Perivale, eating an Eccles cake while enjoying the sunshine amid the graves and with the sounds of people playing golf on the adjacent course.
My original plan was to walk all the way to Uxbridge. That would have been about 15 miles, but at nearly 8.00 pm I was only at about 7.5 miles. My furthest extent west was Islip Gardens, Northolt, where I was trying to reach the Dog Rose Ramble/Hillingdon Trail via a short section of footpath between houses. But the path was inaccessible due to a locked gate, so I decided then to turn back and make my way to Northolt station.
I had intended to go to the Wetherspoon’s at Uxbridge, or maybe even the General Elliott, but now decided to head to the nearest Wetherspoon’s I could think of that could be reached quickly – the Plough & Harrow in Hammersmith. Northolt is on the Central line, but there’s a permitted Oyster transfer at Hanger Lane, where I got off and walked about half a mile to Park Royal (Piccadilly line).
At the Plough & Harrow, my good luck with beer continued with Lancaster Black stout. I had one pint and a meal then left.
As it was only 10.00 pm, and I was dissatisfied with the 8.5 miles I’d done from West Acton to Northolt, I thought I’d walk some more. Had it been a couple of hours earlier, I might have walked all the way home, but that would have taken three to four hours, so I calculated that I could maybe make it as far as Trafalgar Square, then catch the 29 home. It’s a simple, straight, flat walk, more or less east – King Street, Hammersmith Broadway, Hammersmith Road, Kensington High Street, along the south side of the park to Knightsbridge, Hyde Park Corner, Piccadilly, then down Haymarket. I reached the square at 11.30. The distance was 6.23 miles (that figure included about half a mile I’d already walked from Hammersmith station to the Plough & Harrow). Total distance for the day was about 16 miles.

Palm Springs as seen in Trials of Apollo: Burning Maze because this is where I live and I spent too much time over-analyzing where Rick placed the characters!
to be clear, I'm being a bit overly literal with my reading. Palm Springs isn't a metropolis, so people in the surrounding area don't say they're 'from Palm Springs' the way people 30 minutes outside Seattle might say they're 'from Seattle' (though I will use both Palm Springs and the city Coachella as a reference point when telling people where I live). when I say I'm from here I mean I'm from the Coachella Valley; Palm Springs sits roughly at one end of the valley, and I live about halfway down to the other end
but both Meg and Apollo refer to themselves as being 'in Palm Springs' when they talk about Aeithales, and since Meg presumably knows the area, and Apollo also talks about Coachella [Festival] in this book, I'm going to assume they know where they actually are, and that they must be in Palm Springs (or nearby unincorporated land)
OK so with all that out of the way: when they first show up, Apollo mentions the 'San Jacinto wilderness' to the west. I didn't remember this until I looked it up but San Jacinto is the Spanish name for Saint Hyacinth, which, brb crying
Apollo also mentions seeing a patchwork of golf courses below, which is what the valley is known for... but those are mostly in Palm Desert, which is about 15 miles southeast of Palm Springs. this is where my placement of things gets confused, because in my brain this should put them south of Palm Springs, not west—in fact, the San Jacinto wilderness area is more southwest of Palm Springs than straight west. however, if they're high enough in the hills along the southern side of Palm Springs, they'd still have a view of the golf courses in the east with a wilderness to their backs, so this still tracks for me (putting Aeithales above the Tahquitz Canyon area)
(Also, just for a fun local history lesson: a part of this area of the valley is broken into a checkerboard of 1 sq mile plots owned by the state vs plots owned by the Aqua Caliento Band of Cahuilla Indians. idk Meg's father's ancestory, so I'm not sure if he would have built Aeithales on Cahuilla land or not, but I'm going to assume not for now. this helps me narrow down where it might be!)
that's just from the introduction, though. much later in the book (p329 in my copy) Apollo mentions the winds shifting, 'filling the Morongo Valley with wildfire smoke' at which point I got real confused, because Morongo Valley is to the north, also about 15 miles (it's the area that connects the Coachella Valley through the northern mountains to Joshua Tree, another secluded desert town people like to escape to). based on previous estimate, they should be able to see that area, I'm just not sure why Rick chose to mention it; they shouldn't be driving that way at all. unless he meant Moreno Valley, which was mentioned earlier (they drove 'by' it to get to LA), or the Morongo reservation, which is usually just referred to as 'the pass' (between the mountains, into the Coachella Valley from the west; Apollo mentions going through the pass, in those terms, at one point). I think it makes the most sense that Rick meant the pass
I was also confused about where the ever-present wildfires are. from Aeithales, Apollo mentions a glow on the western horizon, but while driving 'by' Moreno Valley he mentions smoke to the north (I keep putting single quotes around 'by' because, depending on where the fires are, it might make just as much sense to go 'through' Moreno Valley) it's probable that the forests on top of both mountain ranges are on fire, given the situation, but the fact that they're able to get through the pass multiple times under these conditions?? nightmareish
final fun facts about driving times, since they drive so much in this book! depending on when you leave, driving from Palm Springs to Malibu takes around 3 hours, and Malibu to Santa Barbara is another hour and a half. thats a lot of driving while the mountains are all on fire! I wonder how expensive their refueling stops were!
anyway, I'm hazarding a guess that Aeithales is within one of these two red circle areas:
Tumblr media
there's a couple hiking trails in both those areas, but they're otherwise unbuilt IRL. I'd be delighted to know where Rick intended for Aeithales to be when he did research for this book!

Four-Bedroom Townhomes in San Antonio
When it comes to college student housing options, getting four-bedroom townhomes in San Antonio is the best choice for some. Getting four-bedroom townhomes can be an affordable and spacious choice for those students who are willing to live with roommates. Sharing the rent between four or more students can make this option more financially feasible, especially in sought-after areas close to campus. In addition to affordability, four-bedroom townhomes offer better amenities, especially at Villas at College Park. With four bedrooms, students can have their own private space and potentially even a dedicated study area. However, living with multiple roommates may not be ideal for everyone, so it's important to weigh the pros and cons before deciding. However, if you've made up your mind, visit the Villas at College Park.
San Antonio, TX, Thriving Arts Scene
San Antonio boasts a thriving arts scene, with museums, theaters, and art galleries offering various cultural experiences. One of the most popular sports in the area is the San Antonio River Walk, with walkways along the river and lined shops, restaurants, and public art installations. The city enjoys a warm subtropical climate with mild winters and hot summers, perfect for year-round outdoor activities such as swimming, biking, hiking, and nature exploration. San Antonio is also close to the Texas Hill Country, which offers rolling hills, wineries, and outdoor activities for easy weekend getaways. The city is also known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, diverse culinary scene, and family-friendly environment.
Brackenridge Park
Brackenridge Park, located in San Antonio, Texas, is a historical landmark that covers over 343 acres of land. This park is the oldest and most prominent in the area, providing visitors with various activities and attractions suitable for people of different ages and interests. A major attraction within the park is the zoo, home to over 3,500 animals that represent over 750 species from around the globe. Moreover, visitors can explore the beautiful Japanese-style gardens, koi ponds, waterfalls, and traditional pagodas at the Japanese Tea Garden, also known as Sunken Gardens. The park also offers walking, jogging, biking trails, a lake, paddleboat rentals, and a historic outdoor amphitheater.
Operators Oppose Proposed Ban on Horse-Drawn Carriages
Neighbors in northwest San Antonio are concerned about a partially collapsed retaining wall near Cedar Creek Golf Course. The Bexar County Fire Marshall is monitoring the area for safety. The neighbor, who lives across the canyon from the collapse, said that everyone in the area knew something was amiss and that the collapse appeared to have happened all at once. The hole in the southern wall is nothing compared to collapse damage affecting the entry ramp of the complex. The neighbor believes the hole in the ground is due to the porous limestone, which is not adequately drained. The hole in the southern wall is not the first failure in the northwest-side area, and the residents wonder what steps are being taken to address the danger before it worsens.

Garda Lake Italy Tourism and travel Tourism and travels. Take a tour around the world: culture, traditions, curiosities, towns, lakes, mountains, photos, links, and videos by English-culture.com Global Tourism Resilience Day (17 February), proclaimed by the General Assembly in resolution A/RES/77/269, aims to emphasize the need to foster resilient tourism development to deal with shocks, taking into account the vulnerability of the tourism sector to emergencies. For instance, Tourism and Green Investment, encourages a focus on improved travel experiences and innovative solutions “for people, for planet and for prosperity”. We recommend Garda Lake for your travel experiences. It is an ideal touristic place, together with some stunning places in Great Britain, such as the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands, London or other famous towns in England, Germany, America, France and Italy. Garda Lake (Lago di Garda or Benaco) is the largest Italian lake, situated at the foot of the Alps, in a beautiful area of southern Europe. At only 30 Km from Verona, 100 Km from Milan and 130 Km from Venice it is well placed for road, rail and air connections. It is located in Northern Italy, about half-way between Venice and Milan. Glaciers formed this alpine region at the end of the last ice age. The northern part of the lake is narrower, surrounded by mountains, the majority of which belong to the Gruppo del Baldo. The shape is typical of a moraine valley, probably having been formed under the action of a Paleolithic glacier. Although traces of the glacier's actions are evident today, in more recent years it has been hypothesized that the glacier occupied a previously existing depression, created by stream erosion 5 to 6 million years ago. The lake has numerous small islands and five main ones, the largest being Isola del Garda. Nearby to the south is Isola San Biagio, also known as the Isola dei Conigli ("Island of the Rabbits"). Both are off shore of San Felice del Benaco, on the west side. The three other main islands are Isola dell'Olivo, Isola di Sogno, and Isola di Trimelone, all further north near the east side. The main tributary is the Sarca River, while the only emissary is the Mincio River. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the provinces of Verona (to the southeast), Brescia (southwest), and Trento (north). Being easily accessible from the north via the Brenner pass, the lake is a major tourist destination, including a number of exclusive hotels and resorts along its shore. Lake Garda offers the visitor a splendid natural scenery, full of colours, surrounded by the Dolomites of Brenta in the north and the gentle slopes of the morainic hills in the south. A rich vegetation flourishes thanks to the Mediterranean climate: lemon trees, oleanders, magnolias and bouganville. The cultivation of vineyards and olive groves produces good wines and olive oil. Walking leisurely around the small village centres, going on a boat trip, exploring the surroundings in a wide choice of itineraries are the best ways of enjoying the lively atmosphere of the lake and the beauty of the landscape. Moreover, Lake Garda is ideally situated for excursions: to the historical cities of Verona, Brescia, Mantua, Trent and Venice, to the Dolomites, to a performance at the Arena in Verona during the Opera Season. In this region almost every sport can be practised from tennis to paragliding, free-climbing, scuba-diving, clay-pigeon shooting and karting. Sailing and windsurfing enthusiasts find here their ideal conditions and over the last years Lake Garda has been chosen by lovers of mountain-bike and has become world famous for the quality of its golf courses. If looking for fun and relax there is a good choice of amusement parks and gardens; for those who love shopping there are opportunities meeting all needs, from the picturesque street markets to the most elegant shops. Lake Garda is also well known for its exciting night-life, its dolce vita: restaurants, cafes, the trendiest discos and entertainment of all kinds are to be found everywhere. For those who are thinking of a holiday in this attractive part of Italy Garda Vacanze is glad to present the best hotels, holiday apartments, farm holidays and campings round Lake Garda, chosen for the high standard of service, the pleasant location and the outstanding value for money. As Lake Garda is one of the most exclusive venues for business meetings and incentives in Italy, Garda Vacanze suggests suitable 4 and 3 star hotels, perfectly equipped with conference facilities.
Tumblr media
Garda Lake Sirmione Italy Lake Garda is the most important European lake, and it has always been a renowned tourist area. The land is characterised by two colours that give a feeling of joy and peace: blue as the waters illuminated by the sun, and green as the gentle hills surrounding the lake. Thanks to the lake's mediterranean climate, plants and flowers flourish everywhere: vines, bougainvillae, lemon groves, olive trees. Apart from its clear waters, the lake has plenty to offer: art (the Vittoriale museum, the Art Nouveau villas), entertainment (water parks, concerts, shows, live clubs), nature (the lemon gardens, natural parks), sports (sailing, windsurf, water ski, canyoning, rafting, paragliding, trekking, mountaineering, climbing), shopping in the elegant boutiques of the lake promenades. Three beautiful golf courses are available on the western coast, and are renowned all over Europe. Spas and top-quality wellness centres are also very well known. Lake Garda is worth a visit also for its typical products such as wine (high-quality red and white wines such as Groppello, Lugana and Garda Classico), extra-virgin olive oil, and delicious traditional dishes based on lake fish and spits. Worldwide famous painters, writers and artists like Goethe, D’Annunzio, Ibsen and Lawrence lived here and from the harmony of the lake drew inspiration for some of their important works.
