Building Business With Free Online Classified Ads
One time sellers and long term sellers can cash in on the advantages of free online classifieds. Despite the service is given to you free of cost, free online classifieds ad websites offer great service in helping you sell your products.
Free online classifieds websites generally are of two kinds - some have an option for upgrading your free classified ad to a paid one and for others it is completely free. Completely free online classifieds ads websites find revenue by attracting advertisers who like to include text links or banners pointing to their websites.
Either way, one can get online classifieds ad placing for free. Good free classifieds ads websites have some moderation to filter the ads that appear in the website. This is to avoid such items like illegal to trade items from showing up in the classifieds ads listings.
The completely free for all, no moderation websites offer little value to either visitors or advertisers as the whole site will be spawned with thousands of advertisements that have no real value to the visitors.
Businesses looking to build their business with online free classified ads should take necessary care to avoid such websites that are open for all and no moderation. The only thing will be lose of time.
Online classifieds ads free websites that offer to place free classified ads should have human filtering system. Sites that don't maintain its integrity this way will not easily be recognized as good websites, even though they offer the service free of cost.
Online classifieds ads websites that allow you to place classifieds ads do collect your email address and use the email address to sell you products, software and other schemes for advertising your products.
This is actually a downside of free classifieds ads websites. They first attract you with a genuine offer by giving you an option to post your classified ads for free. Then they will also send you emails, telling you about further great opportunities to post your ad for a fee.
Many people who actually use free classifieds ads websites signup for a new @yahoo.com or @gmail.com account for the sole purpose of managing free classifieds ads accounts.
You can get maximum mileage out of your free online classifieds ads if you apply the basics of classifieds ads writing. Think what your prospective customers will be looking for while they read classifieds ads put by you. Draft your free classifieds ads in such a way to appeal to that requirement.
In simpler words, imagine yourself as a buyer of that specific product and imagine you are looking for that product. What product description will attract you the most? Which product description will be believable to you? And what ads will be able to sell you the product. Make sure to apply the answers of those questions in your ad.
Also use different variations of same ad and see which ones perform well and which ones are bad. Take a note of the ads that perform well. Never stop testing new ads. You are always improving your ad quality and increasing the number of sales you make

Maldives Travel Guide for First Timers
Tumblr media
Even before we got married, my then fiancé now husband (Jamal) promised to travel with me to different countries– Maldives on top of the list. True to his word, after two years of our marriage, he took me to my dream destination.
I had various reasons why I wanted to visit this country. For one thing, it’s considered by many as “Paradise on Earth” and it’s undeniably true to me– after swimming in the clear, turquoise waters, walking around a local island with sparkling beaches and palm fringes, running on a white sandbar, and seeing aesthetic coral reefs that are home to plenty of marine species. Second, it’s a 100% Muslim country, and it was an exciting thought to beach bum without seeing too much nakedness. Haha. Indeed, if heaven on earth exists, it is definitely in Maldives!
I used to imagine visiting the tropical paradise as an exceptionally luxurious trip– accessible only if I have millions of pesos on my bank balance. I thought of it as a place I will never have the capacity to visit in this lifetime. I may be right years back, but things have changed now. Maldives is now reachable for budget travelers like me, despite it being a luxury destination. Thanks to the government allowing Maldivians to operate guesthouses, staying in a resort is just an option today.
Tumblr media
ABOUT THE COUNTRY Maldives is an Islamic country located in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sri Lanka and India. It consists of 1,192 gemlike islands grouped in clusters called “atolls” but only 200+ are inhabited. Its capital and most populous city, Malé, is geographically located at the Kaafu Atoll and is a ferry-away from the airport island, Hulhule.
Below are some of the local islands near Malé which are accessible by local ferry:
Maafushi Island
Hulhumale Island
Villingili
Gulhi
Guraidhoo
Fulidhoo
You can choose which island you want to stay in but I recommend Maafushi Island based on experience, and Fulidhoo Island based on positive reviews I have read across the internet.
VISA
Filipinos do not need a pre-arrival Visa to enter Maldives. You will be issued a 30-day free Visa upon arrival provided that your passport is valid and will not expire for the next six months from the entry date.
Tumblr media
WHERE TO BOOK FLIGHTS Flights to Maldives normally cost around ₱20,000 to ₱25,000 with a layover either in Singapore, Malaysia or Thailand. There are several low-cost carriers servicing the Manila to Malé route—you can try Scoot Air, AirAsia or Cebu Pacific. In our case, we took the MNL-SG-MLE and vice versa flights via Scoot Air for P14,000 ONLY per pax inclusive of a 15kg check-in baggage. I honestly thought I scored the cheapest with the said amount, but unfortunately, several weeks subsequent to booking, I came across Scoot Air’s promotional flight of just ₱8,000 for MNL-MLE round-trip flights. There are times that AirAsia offers the same promo. Insane, right? You simply have to be always on the lookout for these unusual promo fares. It’s a different story if you have the moolah to splurge though.
For more info on how I usually score cheapest golden flights, read here.
Tumblr media
HOW TO GET AROUND You might be wondering just how you should be getting around Maldives. Well, there are few methods of transport you can avail depending on your preference and based on factors such as convenience, budget, and safety.
From the Airport Right after stepping outside the arrival hall, you will see a number of booths and their respective staff scattered around the area. If you are expecting your hotel or resort’s staff to welcome you there, just look for a placard with your name on it.
To Resorts or other Local Islands – If no one shows up for you at the airport (insert sad smiley), you may consider taking a speedboat to your preferred resort or local island. Rate depends but it typically starts at 25 USD ~ 1,315 PHP per pax. You also have the option to take a seaplane that costs a lot more than my two kidneys combined. hahajk
To Malé City – If you’re on a budget plan, walk past the booths and locate the public ferry counter to purchase a ticket to Malé City for only 10 MVR ~ 34 PHP. The ride should only take 15 minutes and you’ll arrive at Hulhumale Ferry Terminal.
Tumblr media
Ferry Schedule: FROM MALE CITY TO AIRPORT    Every 10 minutes from morning 06:00 AM to 02:30 AM    Every 30 minutes from morning 02:30 AM to 04:00 AM    Every 15 minutes from morning 04:00 AM to 06:00 AM FROM AIRPORT TO MALE CITY    Every 10 minutes from morning 06:00 AM to 02:30 AM    Every 30 minutes from morning 02:30 AM to 04:00 AM    Every 15 minutes from morning 04:00 AM to 06:00 AM
On Fridays, ferries operate every 10 minutes from the morning at 06:00 AM to 00:00 AM.
Conversely, you can ride a speedboat for your convenience. Within two minutes, you’ll reach the northeast part of Malé City.
Because I booked our hotel in Malé within a day before our arrival and because I did not communicate with them our arrival time, no one showed up for us. Wala kaming placard, jusko napaka-dukha feels. Haha. But they were supposed to greet us at the airport since we paid for that one-way airport transfer. Ang tanga ko lang talagang kausap. hehe
Around the City of Malé Arriving at the ferry terminal, you can take a taxi or a mini pickup truck to bring you either to your hotel (if you intend to stay at Malé) or to Villingili Ferry Terminal (if you want to go directly to a local island of your choice). Also, there are bus lines running a circular route around the small city. The downside is—if your hotel is not within their routes, you still have to walk after getting off on the nearest bus stop.
To our Hotel – We rode a mini pickup truck to reach our hotel. Pahirapan kumuha ng taxi, mga bes kaya nagpaka- Megan Young and Mikael Daez kami ni Jamal. Haha. We were charged 50 MVR by the driver. Minimum fare for taxis is 20 MVR per pax during the day and 25 MVR during the night.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To Maafushi Island From Villingili Ferry Terminal, the ride to Maafushi Island will only take about an hour and a half. Ticket price is only 53 MVR ~ 3.50 USD ~ 190 PHP.
Ferry Schedule:
Tumblr media
For an updated schedule, click here.
After spending the night at Malé, we went to Maafushi Island where we planned to stay for 5D4N. From our hotel, a staff hailed a taxi for us (and paid for it because of their utang to us) and instructed the driver of our destination.
Since we arrived at the terminal early, we went to a food court nearby and had milkshake while waiting. Sobrang init, mga bes.
Around Maafushi Island From the terminal, getting to your hotel will be either through your hotel’s private vehicle or rickshaw. Yup, rickshaw. Maafushi is a very small island (1.275km x 0.260km) that you can see the entire island within two hours of walking. Some hotels and guesthouses offer a rental bike service for 5 USD per hour. A bit pricey. You can see the locals using motorcycles as a mode of transportation as well, though I am not sure if they are up for lease.
Tumblr media
WHERE TO STAY There are a limited number of budget sleeps in Maldives. Unlike in any other Asian country where you will find a 30 USD per night accommodation for two, in Maldives, budget hotels or guesthouses usually cost no less than 60 USD. If you’re lucky, you may come across huge discounts in Agoda. Make sure to constantly browse the app, you might come across a crazy deal like what happened to us.
Or better yet, sign up on Airbnb using this link to earn ₱1,600 travel credit. Or get a 10% refund on your first transaction at Booking.com when you use this unique link.
For high-end tourists, exclusive resorts are the place to be but allot at least 600 USD per night.
The Melrose Hotel – It’s a 450m-walk from Hulhumale Ferry Terminal. We spent our first night here for just 30 USD. It’s the cheapest we could find on Agoda that serves breakfast. Our booking was inclusive of taxes, environmental fees, a welcome drink, one-way airport transfer, and free breakfast. The staffs were friendly and helpful; the receptionist is Pinay, yaay! Our room was small, enough for a 9-hour stay, but very clean. It has toiletries, coffee and tea sachets, iron, and a flat-screen TV among others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seven Corals Guesthouse – This was our home in Maafushi for 5D4N. I loved it! The staffs were friendly and attentive, the room was spacious and snug, food was in a variety, and the ambiance was cozy and relaxing. Not to mention the long list of inclusions on our ₱16,500 deal:
Meals (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner)
Welcome drink
Afternoon tea
Express check-in
Fruit basket
Selected watersports (i.e. Jetski, but the schedule was in conflict with ours)
Free local mobile SIM card
Complimentary snacks
Night Fishing
Sunset Cruise
Dolphin Cruise (No dolphins on our cruise huhu)
Snorkeling Excursion
Sandbank Picnic
Taxes and other fees
We tried looking for another guesthouse/hotel that offers the same but only Seven Corals does. Highly recommended to keep an eye on a deal like this.
Adaaran Prestige Vadoo (optional) – One-night rate starts at ~1,000 USD inclusive of breakfast and taxes/fees. Additional of at least ~200 USD per pax for the roundtrip transfers. It can hurt your pocket but recommended to stay if you have the cash. OR- here’s the catch, you can ask a Maldivian in the local island where you stay to contact any resort you prefer and ask them if you’re allowed to arrange your roundtrip speedboat transfer. The local quoted us 100 USD (2 pax; 2-way transfer) only, 400 USD less than the quoted price on Agoda.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Novina Hotel – another great hotel centrally located in Malé City for ~70 USD only inclusive of a welcome drink, buffet breakfast, and airport transfer. Just like our room in The Melrose, it was small but well maintained. The floor was carpeted and there’s a mini-fridge, too. They served decent food which was great. I love the omelette. Staffs were very welcoming and friendly that they let us stay in the lobby after check-out while waiting for our evening flight.
PLACES TO VISIT IN MALE CITY
Masjid Al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Auzam
Fish Market
Republic Square
National Museum

MONEY SAVING TIPS
If you have a layover in Singapore for at least 5.5 hours to 24 hours, join the FREE 2.5-hour guided tours of Changi Airport. More info about the tours here.
Visit during the low season (June to November) to score off-season rates on activities, accommodation, and flights. Prices tend to drop insanely plus, there are fewer tourists traveling.
Last minute deals exist, just be smart enough to plan your trip.
Currency exchange shops in Malé City offers better rates than those in the Airport.
Bring USD with you preferably in 100s or 50s. Usual buying rate for 50-100 USD is 15 MVR per USD while for denominations below is around 12 MVR per USD.
Resorts and guesthouses only accept Dollars while local restaurants and street side shops need Rufiyaa.
Local Ferry >>> Speedboat
STAY. ON. A. LOCAL. ISLAND.
If you’re into luxury resorts, choose those closer to Malé or to the island you’re staying at.
Get not just a full board stay, but an all-inclusive package. It’s very reasonable than bringing with you your wallet all the time.
Haggle like a pro. Be it souvenirs or activities, bargain a better price.
Pack chips and biscuits.
Do not forget your swimming essentials. Sunscreen lotions and rashies in the local islands are expensive.

It’s not the most powerful blower available, but it’s small enough to keep in a closet and affordable, to boot. This leaf blower has a high-performance 27cc engine that delivers air volume up to 450 CFM and speeds up to 205 MPH, making quick work of even heavy leaves. It has a variable speed control throttle, as well as a molded handle that reduces vibration, and its easy-start technology allows you to start cleanup faster. For those times when you want to remove leaves from your yard instead of just moving them, you’ll want a leaf blower like this one from Husqvarna, which comes with a vacuum kit. The gas-powered tool has a 28cc engine and can reach speeds of 170 MPH and a max air volume of 470 CFM, and it can easily be turned into a lawn vacuum that collects and mulches debris for easy disposal. They are the most lightweight and also require little maintenance. And best of all, they are the closest thing you’ll get to a quietly operating machine. Ryobi 40V leaf blower is compatible with all 40V tools, batteries, and chargers by Ryobi.

Getting Your Motorcycle Class 2B Licence in Singapore- Course, COE and Motorcycle Rentals
Obtaining a motorcycle Class 2B licence in Singapore isn't just about learning to ride; it's a journey that requires dedication and careful planning. If you're considering taking up motorcycling as a more affordable means of transport or simply for the thrill of the open road, there are several key steps and considerations you'll need to navigate. Let's delve into what you need to know to kickstart your motorcycle journey in Singapore.
Getting Your Motorcycle Class 2B Licence in Singapore
1. Learning to Ride
When it comes to acquiring a motorcycle licence in Singapore, your primary avenue is through one of the designated driving schools:
Bukit Batok Driving Centre (Bukit Gombak)
ComfortDelGro Driving Centre (Ubi)
Singapore Safety Driving Centre (Woodlands)
Unlike car licences where private instructors are an option, motorcycle training is centralized through these schools. The curriculum for a Class 2B licence covers theory and practical components, ranging from basic riding theory to navigating obstacle courses and road riding.
2. Class 2B Syllabus
The Class 2B licence permits riding bikes up to 200cc. The training process typically includes:
Theory Lessons: Basic Theory Test (BTT) and Riding Theory Test (RTT).
Practical Lessons: Circuit-based training (e.g., slalom, figure 8) followed by road riding.
Expect a structured progression through the syllabus, with the need for repetition if certain skills aren't mastered initially. Passing the Basic Theory Test is a prerequisite for obtaining a Provisional Driving Licence (PDL), which is essential for road riding.
3. Class Progression
After a year with a Class 2B licence, you can upgrade to Class 2A (up to 400cc) and subsequently to Class 2 (unlimited cc). The progression becomes easier and quicker as you gain experience.
4. Cost Considerations
The cost of obtaining a Class 2B licence ranges from $900 to $1,000 on average, factoring in theory lessons, practical sessions, and test fees. Each driving school has a similar cost structure, with the total amount depending on how quickly you progress through the lessons.
Motorcycle COE Price
1. Understanding COE
Motorcycle Certificate of Entitlement (COE) prices significantly impact overall motorcycle costs. As of recent years, COE prices for motorcycles have soared, surpassing $10,000, making new bike purchases considerably pricier.
2. Cost Comparison
Despite high COE prices, motorcycles remain a more economical transport option compared to cars, where COEs for category A (cars) can exceed $100,000.
Popular Motorcycles in Singapore
For new riders, popular bike models in Singapore span Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, and more. Second-hand options provide affordability, with prices varying based on COE tenure and bike condition.
Where to Buy Motorcycles
Whether opting for new or used bikes, several reputable dealers and platforms exist in Singapore, offering a range of models to suit different preferences and budgets.
Second-Hand Motorcycle Tips
Buying a second-hand bike requires diligence:
Check COE Duration: Ensure sufficient COE tenure remains.
Inspect Bike Condition: Test acceleration, brakes, and other critical components.
Negotiate: Prices are often negotiable; don't hesitate to bargain.
Arrange Insurance: Secure insurance before riding off with your new bike.
Motorcycle Rental
For those hesitant about committing to bike ownership, rental services provide an opportunity to gain riding experience without the long-term commitment. Prices vary based on rental duration and bike model.
You can search for "near me bike rental shop" to find out the best motorcycle for rent in Singapore.
Conclusion
Obtaining a motorcycle licence in Singapore involves a comprehensive process, from structured training to navigating COE prices and purchasing the right bike. Whether you're a seasoned rider or embarking on your motorcycle journey for the first time, understanding these key aspects will set you on the right path towards earning your Class 2B licence and hitting the road confidently.

13 Maret 2017
Hi Sul! Putri sama aku lagi dapet promo Air*sia lagi nih. Rute kita adalah Surabaya-Singapore-Hatyai Thailand- Penang (by land)-Kuala Lumpur-Surabaya.
Aku barusan sampai Penang, daerah heritage di perbatasan Thailand Malaysia. What impressed me instantly was the warmth of religious energy there, Sul. Satu rumah dia bau dupa di sore tadi, sampingnya lagi ada satu bangunan bertuliskan masjid. pas aku dateng kesana, satu kelompok ternyata sedang mengadakan pengajian. sayup2 hangat. gambar di atas ku ambil dekat daerah bernama Jetty. ia adalah sebuah daerah yg mayoritas penduduknya sangat religius. di depan rumah mereka ada bentuk2 penyembahan macam gambar yg ku ambil diatas. and it's warm. belum lagi orang-orangnya. Aku tadi banyak banget dibantu sama mereka pas nyoba nyari hotel yg sudah ku pesan.
Terus aku juga amazed sama public transportationnya sana, Sul. The government disana itu treat their citizens really well.
Awalnya agak worry sih soalnya some travel blogs bilang kalo harus punya sim internasional. and none of us has it. But finally kita bisa dapet and luckily we got the newest motorcycle. 😍 yeay.
Awalnya aku wondering gitu. how do they mobilize? Meskipun emang sebenernya ada jalan setapak dan beberapa mobil yg terparkir di depan rumah mereka (though Idk which way they use to go there). I really don't presume that the train is for public.
For the price, mereka beda2in berdasarkan warga kenegaraan sama umur. Pertama kali mau naik udah takut banget, tangan tiba2 udah keringat dingin gitu. ((alay)) Keretanya aja beda. Relnya aja juga beda. Kemiringan keretanya itu sekitar 45'. dan jalurnya? hmmmm even ada yang almost 90'. kek riding roller coaster in a slow motion gitu, Sul. Sampe di stasiun terakhir, kamu bakalan dimanjain ama a very good view dan beberapa permainan. dia macam selekta gitu ternyata. ada botanical garden, ada gembok cinta gitu2. so-so sih menurutku. tapi ya okelah.
perjalanan ke Penang gak mungkin dong cuman ada senengnya doang. Ada juga kurangnya. One of which is kurangnya orang Malaysia asli disana, and it affects the various food stoll there. Populasi penduduk sana mayoritas chinese and Indian. So mayoritas makanan yang tersedia non-halal jadi it's not edible for us. Susah sih. Tapi ada kok warung-warung India halal yang jual makanan2 enak juga. :))
Sampe sini aja ya, Sul. Pegel nih nulis. hahaha.
Jadi kamu apa kabar? Kuliahmu lancar pasti ya?
Aku liat kemarin story-mu sama mbak2. Cantik dia. Jaga terus ya. ❤️

Is Southeast Asia Safe for Travelers?
Tumblr media
Posted: 6/22/2019 | June 22nd, 2019
Southeast Asia is one of the most popular regions in the world for backpackers and budget travelers. It’s home to a well-worn travel trail that dates back to the 1960s and ’70s, stretching across Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore.
I’ve been visiting the area regularly since 2004 (I even spent a few years living in Thailand). It really does have something for everyone: bustling cities, delicious food, spectacular diving, lots of outdoor activities, historic sites — the list goes on.
Best of all? It’s budget friendly!
But is Southeast Asia safe?
That’s a question I get asked often, especially by solo travelers (or their worried families).
Generally speaking, Southeast Asia is incredibly safe. In fact, it’s one of the safest regions in the world.
You aren’t going to really face any physical danger, and it’s rare to even get robbed or mugged. People are nice, respectful, and friendly.
That said, here’s everything you need to know to stay safe in Southeast Asia!

11 Ways to Stay Safe in Southeast Asia
Staying safe in Southeast Asia doesn’t take a lot of work. Southeast Asia is an incredibly safe place to backpack and travel – even if you’re traveling solo, and even as a solo female traveler. Violent attacks are rare. There are some common scams around, like the motorbike scam where vendors try to charge you for damage to their bike, but for the most part, this is a safe place to travel. People are nice and helpful and you’re unlikely to get into trouble. The people who do tend to be involved with drinking or drugs or sex tourism. Stay away from that stuff and you’ll be fine. That said, here are 11 ways to ensure nothing is going to happen on your trip:
1. Watch for purse-snatchers – Purse-snatching is rare, but it does happen. To avoid the most common types of theft, don’t wear your purse or bag over just one shoulder — instead, wear it across the front of your body. Also, many purse-snatchers will be on a scooter, so take particular caution when walking alongside traffic.
2. Be extra careful in traffic – Most injuries in Southeast Asia are caused by vehicles. Be especially careful walking in hectic cities like Hanoi or if you are driving (especially scooters).
3. Don’t do drugs – Drugs like marijuana are easily accessible in Southeast Asia (especially in party locations, like the Full Moon Party). But they are illegal! Fines are heavy — and if you get caught, expect to spend time in jail or pay a hefty bribe. Save yourself the hassle and don’t do any drugs while you’re in the region.
4. Wear a helmet – If you’re renting or riding a scooter or motorbike, be sure to wear a helmet. Also wear proper clothing and footwear. I’ve seen a lot of road rash during my time in Southeast Asia!
5. Look out for bedbugs – Unfortunately, bedbugs are a reality in Southeast Asia. Though rare, you will likely encounter them at some point if you’re traveling around the region for any length of time. Always check your accommodation in advance. If it looks dirty, simply move on. Also, never put your backpack on your bed. That way, if the bed is contaminated, at least your backpack won’t also be contaminated.
6. Bring a lock – While theft in dorm rooms is rare, you don’t want to take any chances. Hostels almost always have lockers available. Bring a lock so you can store your possessions safely while you’re out and about.
7. Hide your valuables – When you’re out exploring, keep your wallet and valuables hidden in your backpack (or leave them loved up in your accommodation). Carry some cash in your pockets, but keep your cards and other valuables out of reach. Most theft is opportunistic, so if you’re vigilant, you’ll have nothing to worry about!
8. Don’t party solo – Make sure if you’re out partying that you do it with friends or people you can trust. Don’t get so drunk that you can’t get home safely. (If you’re taking part in the Full Moon Party in Thailand, you can find specific safety tips in this blog post.)
9. Keep your passport – Never give away your passport as a deposit when booking things like accommodation or rentals. Always make sure you get it back, or else you might not see it again. (And be sure to keep a digital scan of your passport in your email inbox just in case.)
10. Stay away from animals – Stray dogs (as well as monkeys) often carry diseases, such as rabies (which can be fatal). To avoid getting bitten, don’t pet stray dogs or wild monkeys.
11. Buy travel insurance – While Southeast Asia is generally safe, unexpected incidents can still occur. Cover yourself by buying travel insurance. It has the potential to save you thousands of dollars while also giving you peace of mind. I never leave home without it!
5 Common Scams in Southeast Asia
While Southeast Asia is generally quite safe, there are still a few common travel scams. Here are four of the most common scams — and how you can avoid getting fooled by them!
1. The Taxi/Tuk-tuk Overcharge This is one of the most common travel scams out there — you’ll encounter it all across Southeast Asia. Either the driver will tell you the taxi meter is broken and try to charge you a high rate, or you’ll see the cost on the meter skyrocket faster than Superman!
For tuk-tuks, you’ll need to negotiate in advance, because drivers will quote a price much higher than what the ride should cost. To avoid being ripped off, you’ll first need to know how much your ride should cost. The best way to figure this out is to ask your hostel or hotel staff for a quote so you have a frame of reference (or google it, if you’re just arriving).
If the driver tries to negotiate the rate with you, offer them the correct rate. If they refuse, just leave and find someone who will put the meter on. (Then, if the meter seems to be going up too quickly, have them pull over and get out.)
Many tourism boards let you report bad cab drivers, so be sure to always make a mental note of their ID number when you get in the cab.
2. Motorbike Scam Southeast Asia is a great place to rent a scooter or motorcycle and get off the beaten path. But there is a common scam you’ll want to be aware of.
Here’s how it goes: You’ll rent a bike and then when you bring it back, the owner will demand additional payment or expensive repairs because there is some “damage” you didn’t know about. Sometimes the owner will send someone to mess with the bike or steal it so you have to pay.
To avoid this, take photos of the bike first to document any previous damage. Go around it with the owner so they know what you are taking pictures of.
Once you rent it, use your own lock and keep the bike out of sight and off main streets when you park it.
Also, always make sure you buy travel insurance so you can make a claim if there is an issue.
3. Your Attraction is Closed for Lunch I admit, I have fallen for this one before. A friendly local will approach you and inform you that the attraction you want to visit (often a temple) is closed for any number of reasons (religious ceremony, holiday, etc.).
They’ll then try to guide you to a different attraction (or often a shop), where you’re heavily pressured to purchase something or pay a high admission price.
To avoid this scam, be sure to ask your accommodation staff before you leave to confirm that the attraction is open. Then find the main entrance or ticket counter and see for yourself. Opening and closing times are almost always available online too, so you can often look them up just to be safe.
Generally speaking, most attractions in Southeast Asia don’t close for lunch. They either close for the day or not at all.
4. The Drug Deal Gone Bad This scam is common anywhere there is a party in Southeast Asia. You’ll be in a popular tourist area (usually a party place) and someone will offer you drugs.
If you say yes, before you know it, a real cop is will be on the scene! They’ll insist that they are going to arrest you unless you can pay a hefty fine right there (i.e., a bribe).
Caught red-handed, you’ll probably pay the bribe rather than go to jail. Simply put: Don’t buy drugs in other countries!
5. The Taxi Scam Only use taxis that use a meter. If the meter is rigged or they refuse to use it, just get out and find a new taxi (more on this below!).
Is the Food Safe in Southeast Asia?
If the food weren’t safe here, I’d likely never come back. Street food is almost always safe (it’s important to the cultures of the locals). In fact, it’s usually more safe than restaurants, because the operation is so simple and the turnover so fast.
When looking for somewhere to eat, find a place with a crowd, as well as one with children — if parents think it’s safe for the kids, then it’s safe for you! Anywhere with a lot of people (specifically locals) is a good indicator that the food is both good and safe.
Be sure to wash your hands before eating (hand sanitizer is good for that), as you’ll likely have been out and about all day and may have picked up all sorts of germs.
Can You Drink the Tap Water in Southeast Asia?
The tap water in Southeast Asia will vary from country to country, but as a general rule I would not recommend you drink the water unless you have a water purifier like the Lifestraw or Steripen.
Are Taxis Safe in Southeast Asia?
Taxis in Southeast Asia are safe — but they also have a reputation for overcharging (see above) or taking longer routes to dive up the fare.
Always make sure your driver is using the meter (and that the meter is not moving overly quickly). If you encounter a problem, simply get out and find a new taxi.
A better option is Grab or Uber (depending on where you are). You’ll be able to see your driver, track your ride, and make complaints if you have a problem. It’s the best way to get around, when available.
Is Southeast Asia Safe for Solo Travelers?
Southeast Asia is one of the best places in the world for solo travelers. There are tons visiting the region each and every year, many of them traveling solo for the first time (it’s great for both new and veteran travelers alike).
With a little common sense, a solo traveler won’t have to worry much about safety here. There is a well-worn backpacker trail, so you’ll never be far from other travelers. That means it’s easy to meet people in case you decide you’d rather travel in a group for some (or all) of your trip.
Is Southeast Asia Safe for Solo Female Travelers?
Female travelers have additional safety concerns they need to be aware of. That being said, Southeast Asia is still one of the best (and most safe) regions for solo female travel.
By following the tips above, as well as the same precautions you’d take at home (such as not wandering alone at night intoxicated, keeping an eye on your drink while at the bar, etc.), a solo female traveler will be able to have an amazing visit to Southeast Asia without worrying too much about her safety.
And as mentioned above, with so many solo travelers — including many women — in the region, it’s easy to find others to spend time with in case you’re feeling insecure or unsafe.
  Should You Visit Southeast Asia?
So, is Southeast Asia safe?
Absolutely!
It’s super unlikely that anything will happen. And even less so if you follow the advice listed above.
Be sure to get travel insurance just in case something goes wrong. The past is not prologue and you always want to play it safe. Travel insurance was there when I lost my bag, broke my camera, and popped an eardrum while diving in Thailand. I never expected those things to happen and was glad I had insurance! You can use the widget below to look up the travel insurance policy that is right for you (or just click here to go to their website directly):
Book Your Trip to Southeast Asia: Logistical Tips and Tricks
Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner or Momondo. They are my two favorite search engines because they search websites and airlines around the globe, so you always know no stone is being left unturned.
Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the largest inventory. If you want to stay somewher eother than a hotel, use Booking.com, as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels. I use them all the time. Some suggested places to stay in the region are:
Golden Mountain Hostel (Bangkok) – This is a new hostel with dorm beds built into the wall for added privacy. Each room sleeps eight people and the décor is super beautiful and well thought out. The mattresses are soft too!
Sla Boutique Hostel (Phnom Penh) – This is a nicer hostel that’s well designed and great for meeting like-minded travelers. The staff are super helpful and it’s located near lots of bars, attractions, and restaurants (but the hostel itself is pretty quiet).
Coral Hostel (Singapore) – With all day breakfast, fast Wi-Fi, and AC, this is a great choice for the budget-savvy traveler. Everything is new and clean, and they also have female-only dorms.
Kememai Hostel (Ubud) – This hostel is small and cheap, but the staff are friendly and it has everything you need for a comfy budget stay.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it, as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. I’ve been using World Nomads for ten years. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:
World Nomads (for everyone below 70)
Insure My Trip (for those over 70)

Drivezy, India’s vehicle sharing startup, is raising $100M+ at a $400M valuation, eyes US expansion
Drivezy — the startup out of India that wants to turn private car usage on its head through a car-sharing network where people lend their cars and two-wheeled vehicles but also have options to use vehicles from a fleet managed by Drivezy — said it is raising more money as it gears up for the next stage of its expansion, including a launch in the US in coming weeks.
The company is in the process of raising $100 million in equity funding, plus another $400 million in asset financing, with the latter to help continue building out the inventory that sits alongside the vehicles provided by its users. This would technically be a Series C and is being raised at a $400 million valuation, the company confirmed to me.
“Currently” is the key word: Ankur Sengupta, who heads up business development for Drivezy, said in an interview that the startup will leave the round open for about a year and continue raising it on a rolling basis, with the valuation varying accordingly. “The valuation we are working at now is $400 million, but we will keep accepting investments, at different valuations,” he said.
(Note: This is not an entirely new way of raising rounds, but in the last few years, it has become a lot more common to see it rather clear “Series” blocks. Fast-growing companies like Snap and more recently Grab in Southeast Asia have chosen this route to tap into readily available funding faster and closer to when it’s actually needed.)
The company is not disclosing any names right now except to note that it is likely to include a new, large investor from Japan, and that it also has commitments from investors in the US, Singapore and China. Previous backers have included the Yamaha Motor Company, Axan Partners and IT-Farm, as well as Y-Combinator — where Drivezy was a part of a 2016 cohort as JustRide, led by its five founders Amit Sahu, Ashwarya Pratap Singh, Vasant Verma, Abhishek Mahajan and Hemant Sah. It has also been through Google’s Launchpad accelerator, although it doesn’t look like Google is investing (yet).
Drivezy last raised money as recently as three months ago, a $20 million Series B, when it also raised $100 million in asset financing. Alongside users’ own cars and the fleet it manages, Drivezy also works with in partnership with dealerships and others to provide vehicles for its inventory.
Between then and now, the company has seen a lot of growth.
The company gets more than 53,000 bookings for cars each month, versus 37,000/month just three months ago. Two-wheeled vehicles — primarily motorcycles — add nearly 30,000 more. While cars are typically booked for two-three days, two-wheeler bookings are weekly or monthly bookings.
The inventory has also gone up. Currently, there are 7,500 two-wheelers on the platform, with another 7,500 coming by the end this month; and 3,500 cars. (This is up from 5,000 motorbikes and scooters and 3,000 cars three months ago.) Currently there are 30 dealerships and more than 25 banks and other financial companies in Drivezy’s network.
Drivezy’s growth is coming at what seems to be a key inflection point for the transportation industry.
Some believe the the days of vehicle ownership in mature markets like the US are numbered, with several developments helping that trend along: the rise of over-expensive self-driving cars that many will not be able to afford; the proliferation of affordable Uber-style services; and the emergence of startups like Getaround (which will be a direct competitor to Drivezy when it comes to the US) and Fair to make it easy and cheap to procure a car ride without buying a car or using old-school car rental services.
But in developing markets like India, vehicle ownership is already a relative rarity, even if the desire to use a car is not: currently only seven percent of Indians own a car and sixteen percent own two-wheelers.
“That’s meant that the auto industry has been slow to grow here,” Sengupta said. (That, plus patchy public transport in many urban areas, has also meant a lot of growth, incidentally, for the likes of Ola.)
Drivezy’s response has been to create a completely new supply chain for private car and two-wheeled vehicle usage. Customers include people who are not able to purchase a car, those who do have cars but would appreciate some income to help pay off the loans they took to get them, plus car companies and dealerships who are looking for new avenues and business models to shift more vehicles.
Currently, the P2P side of the business is most popular on the car side of the business, where 70 percent of the inventory has been listed by private owners, while only 35 percent of the two-wheelers come from private owners (all the P2P vehicles get a “fitness check”. Most of the rest are listed by asset financing companies through SPVs on a revenue sharing basis, with less than two percent on Drivezy’s own books. These, the Sengupta said, have been purchased to meet licensing obligations in India.
While Drivezy has definitely benefitted from useful market conditions — low vehicle ownership and a rapidly growing, tech-savvy middle class with disposable income and more reasons for travelling — now the plan will be to take its model to other markets, including both those that have similar conditions to India’s, as well as those that are more developed (and hence, more competitive).
That will include the US, where the company is planning on setting up its first pilots in April to test demand in different markets and market segments, Sengupta said. While it’s a very different market — and certainly more competitive when you consider the likes of Getaround, Turo, Fair and others — Drivezy (its founders having spent time there going through Y Combinator and Google’s accelerator) thinks that there is a gap in the area of microlending and the fact that even with a lot of options already, there can be more.
“People have an aspirational needs, they want better cars, BMWs and Audis for example, and there are no companies tackling the issue of bringing the cost of renting these models down,” Sengupta said. Considering that there is also a burgeoning market for scooters in the country, that could also be an area where Drivezy will get involved.
The pilot/expansion in the US will come alongside building and hiring for an innovations lab in the country, a pattern that Drivezy will also be following when it expands in Asia as well. Other countries where it plans to go this year, he said, include Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore.
It’s not often that you hear about startups out of India expanding to the US, so that in itself (in my opinion) is a great story about how the gravitational pull of the tech world has indeed shifted away from Silicon Valley. Ultimately, the international expansion to North America and other markets will serve a dual purpose for Drivezy. Not only will it help the company grow business, but it’s putting the company on the map, and that too will help attract more funding attention.

Disrupting the Mobility Industry Through A Transparent Data Ecosystem – MVL Announces Coin Generation Event
Gathering separate mobility services into a single incentive-based blockchain mobility ecosystem to ensure data transparency
Singapore, 4 May 2018 – MVL (pronounced “em-buh l”, Mass Vehicle Ledger) is a Singapore-based blockchain mobility ecosystem company set to revolutionise the way the mobility industry and its related services are connected by allowing for the transparent sharing of a mobility lifetime data.
The MVL Ecosystem does this by recording all core data related to driving, accidents, repairs and any other mobility-related transactions on the blockchain. Participants can access this via the MVL mobile application, connecting all businesses, services, and people in the mobility industry. It will also solves the problems faced by consumers in the existing regulation-based mobility ecosystem where information is often fragmented, misleading and worst of all, inaccurate.
Kay Woo, Founder of MVL, said, “Building trust in the traditional used-car trade industry has always been difficult. A car owner has no way of proving that his or her car has been highly maintained and get a good price. On the other hand, the potential buyer has no way of checking if the repair history is accurate. Therefore, with MVL, data transparency is key as it ensures that information exchanged is accurate and trustworthy.”
Solving Long Standing Problems in the Automobile Industry Through Blockchain
With the advancement of technology, more players are entering the mobility industry – from cab drivers, to mechanics and used-car dealers. This has grown to include various digital innovations related to repair, insurance, carpooling and ride hailing. Within this complex ecosystem, MVL has identified three main issues within the industry to tackle:
Regulation based vehicle industry – Leading to a lack of motivation for people to drive well, as the baseline is simply not to get caught.
Independent tech-based ride hailing services within the market – This benefits investors, shareholders and founders most, although it is drivers and users who fuel the services’ growth.
Disconnectedness of various platforms (e.g. different ride sharing apps globally) – These inconveniences consumers as they are not able to cross platforms and access their data.
By applying the blockchain technology which tracks a vehicle’s activity and continuously collect data, MVL addresses these issues through gathering transparent data becomes the foundation which leads to a higher level of trust in the industry. For example, mechanic shops and individual mechanics who provide good service and record repair data accurately will receive incentives. Moreover, professional or regular drivers will be fairly rewarded for driving safely and recording driving data. Subsequently, since customers who want to buy used cars can see its maintenance, repair, and driving data, they will be less concerned about being overcharged as there is clear data on the car’s state.
Participants in the ecosystem who provide data will receive MVL Points (MVP), a reward system used to encourage contribution to the ecosystem. The MVL Points collected by these participants can be converted into MVL Coins (the cryptocurrency used in the MVL Ecosystem). Participants can actively trade in this trust-based ecosystem to allow the value of MVL coins to increase accordingly.
Kay added, “MVL practices a distributed economy, or deconomy, where safe drivers, friendly chauffeurs, honest mechanics and other diligent data providers are fairly rewarded. In the future, MVL plans to broaden its horizons to connect services such as bike or motorcycle sharing services and collect different types of data.”
MVL is under the full ownership of easi6. Over the past five years, easi6 has been providing online & offline connection (O2O) services to travel agencies, car rental companies and taxis in 10 major Asian countries including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and Vietnam.
Easi6 participated as an O2O traffic service provider in the ‘Go PyeongChang’ app, a traffic information app for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games, providing convenient access to the visitors and staff. Also, Kay Woo, CEO of MVL/Easi6 was awarded by South Korea’s Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for his contribution to the development of land transportation last December.
The MVL pre-ICO began on 26 April 2018.
