(more…)

‘The Other Side Of Hope’ Trailer: Aki Kaurismaki Takes On The Refugee Crisis
In a season filled with expensive, noisy blockbusters and over eager Oscar contenders, a new film by the singular, wonderful Aki Kaurismaki is a soothing balm. “The Other Side Of Hope” is coming soon, and it looks like it’ll be a delightfully different treat from the cinematic treadmill.
Sherwan Haji, Sakari Kuosmanen, Janne Hyytiäinen, Nuppu Koivu, Ilkka Koivula, Simon Hussein Al-Bazoon, Kaija Pakarinen, Kati Outinen, Tommi Korpela and Tuomari Nurmio, star in the award winning movie about a Syrian refugee who crosses paths with a restaurant owner in Helsinski, with the typically comical and surreal results we expect from Kaurismaki.

Toivon Tuolla Puolen (The Other Side Of Hope)
Tumblr media
Director Aki Kaurismäki Stars Sherwan Haji, Sakari Kuosmanen, Simon Al-Bazoon Finland/Germany 2017 Language Finnish, English, Arabic, Swedish (with English subtitles) 1hr 40mins Colour
Syrian refugee fetches up in Kaurismäki’s Helsinki
Aki Kaurismäki does not make what you’d call social-realist films. There’s none of that Ken Loach we-just-happened-to-capture-this-on-camera naturalism. Rather, Kaurismäki’s films are utterly (and beautifully) stylised, from the use of shadows – often for shots showing people standing or sitting still, to the deadpan acting. The characters are usually somewhat eccentric, and although most of his films are set when they were filmed, Kaurismäki’s characters nevertheless seem to exist in a bubble where everything feels like it belongs somewhere between 1940 and 1962*.
And yet those characters are affected by the stuff of social-problem films: recession and unemployment (Drifting Clouds, Ariel), homelessness (The Man Without A Past, Kaurismäki’s masterpiece), and, in his most recent films (Le Havre and this one), the refugee crisis. It’s just you’re less likely to think of them as issue films when the (in)action is frequently interrupted by bands playing twangy, bluesy rock and there’s a bizarre interlude when a grim-looking Finnish diner has a brief, disastrous reinvention as a sushi restaurant, complete with the staff in full Japanese costume. Plus, there’s little to no speechifying, not least because that would require the characters to be far more talkative than they ever are.
In The Other Side Of Hope, it takes a long time for our two leads to meet, although they do pass in the street early on. Khaled (Sherwan Haji) is a Syrian who has just smuggled himself to Helsinki on a cargo ship. Against the advice of the black guy working at the train station, he turns himself in at a police station and applies for asylum, and ends up in a holding centre. Meanwhile, Wikström (Kaurismäki regular Sakari Kuosmanen) is a shirt salesman in his sixties whose marriage has collapsed and who wants to make a new start, to do which he has to first win a high-stakes poker game. The poker scene is tremendous, an epic (but still on Kaurismäki’s terms) showdown between a collection of hefty, besuited, equally blank-faced men of a certain age. Eventually, with an unexpressive, unpatronising benevolence, Wikström will be in a position to help Khaled out.
The Other Side Of Hope feels like it has fewer jokes than most Kaurismäki films, and quite a lot of time in the first half of the film is spent showing Khaled’s dealings with the immigration system. It settles into more familiar (and funnier) territory when we get to the diner with its revolting-looking food and fabulously low-intensity (but basically decent) staff (including another member of the Kaurismäki rep company, Ilkka Koivula). And you’d never have any doubts to who made this film, with plenty of the director’s signature elements: Wikström driving a big American car (a Checker cab, in fact), the aforementioned bands, lots of shots of a jukebox, a number of port-set scenes, etc, and an awful lot of smoking… Even when there’s a laptop on screen, you get a manual typewriter alongside it.
Sherwan Haji (this appears to be his first appearance in a movie, but he is a trained actor) is an endearing presence as Khaled, who likeable and adaptable but most of all resilient – because to make it as far as Finland you would need stubbornness and resourcefulness as well as a desperation to be anywhere other than where you came from. He makes a good contrast with Kuosmanen, who seems to be twice his size as well as three times his age.
I guess this is a political film of sorts, just not an obvious one, or not mostly – the most explicit it gets is when one character’s asylum claim getting rejected is followed immediately by a long stretch of news footage of Aleppo being bombed flat. In Finland, Khaled encounters people (Finns and other immigrants, government employees and passing acquaintances) willing to put themselves at risk for him but also anti-immigrant thugs. Maybe the politics are simply of the ‘please don’t be a bastard, if possible’ variety.
It’s a sometimes sad, sometimes hopeful, bittersweet film. And personally, I’d rather have issues taken on by a filmmaker like Kaurismäki than someone waving a manifesto or shooting everything in an outdated approximation of documentary style.
*One of the things in common he has with Jim Jarmusch, with whom he has a longtime mutual admiration pact (see the Helsinki segment of Night On Earth, which features Sakari Kuosmanen).

Berliini.
”Aki on tehnyt paljon töitä.
Suomessa keskusteltiin loppuviikostahttp://ift.tt/2kKTITi vilkkaasti Kaurismäen kunnosta elokuvajuhlilla.
Toivon tuolla puolen on hänen 19. elokuvansa.
