Trajectoire(s)

Daikoku Pier and Tsurumi Tsubasa Bridge in Port of Yokohama, Japan
Location: Honmoku Pier, Naka Ward, Yokohama, Japan Timestamp: 16:31 on Sept. 6, 2023
Welcome to the northern view from the observation deck of Yokohama Port Symbol Tower. In this shot, the northern panorama from Yokohama Port Symbol Tower's observation deck unfolds before us.
On the left in this scene, the Yokohama-Honmoku Breakwater Lighthouse stands tall as two ships traverse the waters—one headed out to sea, while the other pulls a crane barge into the bustling port.
Across the bay lies a manmade island known as Daikoku Pier. Originally constructed as a freight base, this pier now serves as a crucial transportation hub within the Port of Yokohama. It acts as an access point for the Shuto Expressway and a docking area for large cruise ships that cannot pass beneath the Yokohama Bay Bridge.
In the Pix4Japan blog post (https://www.pix4japan.com/blog/20230906-symbol-tower), I’ve included Google Maps links to help you navigate to this location if you ever plan to visit. Dive deeper into Yokohama's maritime history with a plethora of background information and historical insights available for your exploration.

Nujabes's Masterpiece: "Luv(sic) Part 4" feat. Shing02
Title: Nujabes's Masterpiece: "Luv(sic) Part 4" feat. Shing02
Nujabes, the renowned music producer known for his humble yet influential works, tragically lost his life in a traffic collision upon exiting the Shuto Expressway in 2010. As a devoted fan of his music, I, like many others, was deeply saddened by his untimely passing. His death was particularly painful as he was taken from us at such a young age, leaving us to wonder what more he could have contributed to the world. Perhaps, in some way, his incredible talent lives on in a celestial soundscape.
"Luv(sic) Part 4," one of Nujabes's remarkable compositions, was released in 2015, five years after his passing. The song opens with electronic sounds and the melancholic words: "You are about to embark on the most wonderful experience in your life.", "Thanks pal." These introductory remarks poignantly acknowledge his absence and envelop the listener in a sense of sadness and lyricism. "Relax for a moment" follows, inviting the listener to find solace in the music, underscoring the song's power to provide comfort.
One noteworthy aspect of this song is Nujabes's skillful use of rhyme. In contrast to many contemporary artists who often overemphasize rhyme schemes, Nujabes employs them with an exquisite balance. His clever use of rhyme, such as words ending with "~ber," adds a distinct charm to the song. For instance, consider these lyrics: "A series so classic at the top of October. Give thanks to the fam in November. A cold but cozy December." These lines evoke a sensibility reminiscent of Japanese culture, even though they are written in English. This interplay of languages contributes to the song's enchanting and unifying quality.
According to Wikipedia, Nujabes was best known for his atmospheric instrumental compositions, often incorporating elements from hip-hop, soul, jazz, trip hop, breakbeat, downtempo, and ambient music. "Luv(sic) Part 4" beautifully encapsulates many of these characteristics. The song's introduction masterfully sets the tone, evoking sophisticated emotions—a blend of resignation and contentment, an atmosphere of letting go without sadness.
On platforms like YouTube, you can find comments from Korean listeners who have used this song during significant moments in their lives, like playing it for an unrequited love at a graduation ceremony. The song's title, "Luv Sic" (meaning "love sick"), resonates as a source of solace for those who have experienced the pangs of unreciprocated or incomplete love.
In conclusion, "Luv(sic) Part 4" by Nujabes and Shing02 stands as a masterpiece that transcends language and culture, offering solace and a sense of healing to those who are lovesick. Nujabes's ability to create an emotionally charged yet calming atmosphere is a testament to his enduring legacy in the world of music.

Media Reflection
For my reflection on how the media portrayed Japan vs how it really was, I'd like to talk about Kabukicho in Shinjuku Tokyo, and Dotonbori, Osaka first. Both of these locations are vibrant and active areas famous for nightlife and great food. However, what some may not know is that these are the areas in which the hit video game Yakuza 0 takes place. Following two separate men and their journey to legendary status in the underground criminal world, Yakuza 0 was an interesting game with plenty to offer in terms of insight into the fun of Japan. Half of the game follows Kazuma Kiryu, a young yakuza in a place called Kamurocho in Tokyo. Can you guess where it's based off of? Kabukicho! The game bases itself closely on the real thing, minus the gangs and crime, but in the 80s. The red neon torii gate makes its appearance, batting cages, plenty of lights, bars, taxis, train stations, and even slot car racing places. It really felt surreal coming here and experiencing all these things in real life. Of course, as most video games are, there are dramatizations of things that aren't real occurrences, but the setting of the game really helps get the feeling of its real-life counterpart across. Dotonbori was the same way. In the game, Sotenbori is the place where Goro Majima, works as a cabaret club manager to pay his debts to the yakuza. The river, Don Quitote, takoyaki stands, the whole deal was in the game and in Dotonbori. Osaka was more believable in terms of the videogame, as it's not crazy to see uncommon occurrences or people. Yakuza 0 sold to me a very illustrious and embellished image of Japan, yet, the real thing didn't feel like such a far shot from it either. It brings me around to a bigger thought about media and its portrayal of real life, especially considering a place like Japan, whose main power is derived from its influence in media. Many times people will see Japan in a movie, game, social media, or picture, a build an idea of what Japan is in their mind. The Japanese are guilty of this too. Ever heard of Paris Syndrome? It's a very serious form of culture shock when Japanese people visit Paris and it is much dirtier and mundane than they had expected. Being in Japan so much, I've seen their French cafes and boutiques and it's no surprise that they still think France is in its romance era still. In a world more interconnected than ever with technology, it seems our connection to reality may even be weaker as our media evolves.
One thing I really wanted to note was the Shutoko Expressway in Tokyo. Shutoko, more commonly called Shuto Expressway, is a series of interconnected highway roads that reach many parts of Tokyo. I play a video game called Asseto Corsa, a hyper-realistic racing simulator that supports modding, or user-created content. A group of Corsa players got together to make the Shutoko Revival Project (SRP), to bring Japan and it's car culture to real life. Complete with traffic, realistic real-time weather, and full car functionality down to the windshield wipers, I've driven all around Tokyo long before I stepped on the plane. It's uncanny how 1 to 1 this game is, and it gives me great hope for the potential for making the many great roads of the world driveable for all. I've driven Japanese mountain passes, Tokyo streets, Fuji Speedway, and Ebisu circuit, all from the comforts of my home with real driving physics and experience. I can't wait to see the full potential of racing simulation. This example is the only example I can give of a game or media being exactly as it's portrayed, and it gives a positive image for Japan and all who dream to go there, to be able to explore Japan in a fun way without getting out of your house.

Link to my original writeup for this month can be found here.
Love, loss, grieving, healing, wounding, zen.
The idea for the Disco Samurai came about during the Four Tet DJ set at Nowadays—music and dancing has always acted as therapy for me, but it was especially needed this month. I finally decided to pick up a DJ controller and designate a more active hobby to my love of music to tell my truth and process my life. The persona of the Disco Samurai tied together the healing power of music and dancing with the mental steadfastness and clarity of samurai warriors. One major theme of this month has been the desire to be more unapologetic about my identity and contextualizing my position in the Filipino diaspora. This means doing what I can to de-colonize my brain and reconnect with precolonial indigenous ancestral culture. As any child of immigrants knows, being just one generation removed from your parents’ culture, living in a totally different country from where they grew up, is confusing. In certain spaces and places, my existence has felt invalidated by the intentional or unintentional pointing out of these cultural discrepancies. On a bigger scale, this has been happening to the Filipino people due to decades of colonial influence from Spain, the US, and other Asian countries. The amount of layers removed from that indigenous culture due to time, distance, and colonial erasure has thinned the throughline so much that it barely feels like it exists. This month, I’ve sought to strengthen that link through education, music, and community, finding people and content that also unapologetically celebrate identity and the connection to a pure, true self.
The Disco Samurai ended up manifesting as this narrative of an indigenous Filipino warrior captured by the Japanese, forced to fight as a samurai for his colonizers and eventually removed from his homeland during the (mythological?) 1582 Cagayan battles in the northern Philippines. The 1582 Cagayan battles were a vaguely recorded clash over metals trading between Spanish soldiers/sailors and Japanese/Chinese pirates(/maybe samurai?) in the northern Philippines. Despite being lost and far from his home, the Disco Samurai uses a connection to music to channel ancestral energy and power to cope with the existence of living in an environment that wasn’t made for him. In the same way this character uses soul to deal with the mismatched reality of living in an unfamiliar environment fighting for a cause he doesn’t believe in, I’ve applied this way of coping with life to the modern struggles of mental health, navigating major personal life changes, technological/information overload, and existing in a structurally unsustainable society. Music has been the way I’ve made any sense of the world, and there’s a comfort in knowing that it’s been doing the same for people since culture began.
