Some people say that little kids base their imaginary friends based off of real people they’ve seen.

That can be a horrifying notion for some, those people who had clowns or ghost-like characters as their imaginary friends, but you’ve always liked that idea. You don’t remember much about your imaginary friend, just that she was perfect.

She didn’t even really have a name, or maybe you just don’t remember. All you can think of is pink hair, almond-shaped eyes, and a bubbly laugh. Sparkly outfits, dumb jokes.

“I like your dress,” you remember saying at 5 years old.

The girl, probably around 20 years old, smiled and patted your hand, looking like a goddess even while sitting on the top of the wall beside you. “Thanks, Y/N. I like your outfit.”

“I don’t,” you mumbled, picking at your shirt. “Do you have pink hair?”

“Yep! It looks like cotton candy, right?” she laughed, sounding like the bubbles rising to the top of a sugary drink. “What do you think about my hair?”

You pouted and reached out for it, grubby 5-year-old arm too short to reach. “Pretty. You’re pretty. Who are you?”

“I’m your imaginary friend,” the pink-haired girl explained, legs swinging in the air. “I’m here to be your friend, Y/N, only your friend.”

“My friend.” You nodded agreeably, chubby legs swinging in rhythm with the girl sitting next to you. Her laugh made you smile too, and you clapped your hands together. “Friends.”

Is it even possible that such a person ever existed, never mind near you? Maybe it’s a bit of a fixation, with how often your mind drifts to the idea.

Your job as a cashier in a tiny restaurant kind of sucks, but you meet a lot of people. The possibility of seeing someone who even slightly matches the description in your head is honestly the only reason you’re still working out front.

Jin, your manager, sometimes scolds you for staring at the customers, but he always means well. “Yah, Y/N, is the job so boring?”

He’s teasing, but you bow anyway with flushed cheeks. “Sorry, Jin-oppa. Today’s slow, I promise I’ll pay attention when we have customers.”

The tall man peers out; sure enough, there’s no customers, other than a couple having a coffee together and a grandma sipping at her tea. “Ah. Are you still searching for her?”

It’s a bit embarrassing that your manager even knows about your ulterior motive, but Jin has a way of making everything he says sound kind and unassuming. “Yeah, even though it’s not really possible. I doubt the saying is true anyway.”

He shrugs and grabs a cup, probably to make you a drink to cheer you up. “I don’t know, but I don’t think you should give up either. Maybe-”

He’s cut off by the bell signaling a new customer ringing, and you sigh before turning around to face them. “Hi, how can I...”

It’s her. It takes every single ounce of effort you can muster for your jaw not to drop at the girl walking into the shop. Peachy hair, a sparkling dress, and perfect brown eyes.

She seems to think you’re judging her outfit, and the smile on her face drops a bit. “I’m not weird, I promise, I just came back from a performance.”

“A performance. Really?” You swallow hard, straightening up to not seem bored in the conversation. “Uh, what kind of performance?”

“I was singing at my friend’s birthday,” the pink-haired girl explains, adjusting the hem of the glittery gown. “A bit fancy for something like that, I know, but I wanted an excuse to wear it. I thought it was nice.”

“It is,” you assure her, managing to smile when she meets your eyes. “You look pretty.”

She returns your grin, stepping close enough for you to smell a familiar sweet perfume, hints of vanilla and orange blossom. “Thanks. Um, what’s your name?”

“Y/N.” You feel kind of stupid, pointing at your name-tag, but you can’t see anything other than your childhood imaginary friend standing right in front of you. “What can I get for you today?”

“Oh!” The girl cocks her head, pouting as she contemplates her options. It’s probably wrong for your heart to already be beating so fast just looking at her. “I’ll have a yogurt smoothie? Two, please.”

“Two?”

She frowns, hitching her bag up her arm. Designer, you note. “Unless you don’t like yogurt smoothies, but who doesn’t like them?”

Your mind’s racing a mile a minute, and it feels like you’ve been ejected out of the car when you come to a conclusion. “Oh. One for me? And I do like yogurt smoothies, but the way.”

“Great!” Her smile is sugary sweet, but still impossibly genuine. “One for you, yes. It looks like it’s slow today, so I’d like to have a smoothie with you. If you’re okay with that, of course.”

��Definitely.” Even to your own ears, you sound a bit breathy, so you clear your throat before speaking again. “Um, your name? For the order, of course.”

You don’t see the basement ever again and your night there fades from your mind like a bad dream as Kageyama and you fall back into a comfortable cadence together. You love him with all your heart, you truly do. You love going on jogs with him even as your legs tremble from exertion and sweat glistens your brows. You love watching his eyes light up in excitement as he sets perfectly to Ushijima and turns to you with a wide grin on his face after his team scores a point. You love watching his brows wrinkle in concentration as he takes painstaking care to cook both of you a healthy meal. But even as you smile fondly at the sleeping figure next to you and trace random designs on his rising and falling chest at night when the two of you lay in bed, there’s a slight pang in your heart as your thighs clench and you wistfully think of the last time the two of you had made love. It seems so long ago and you can’t even clearly remember the last time the two of you had even kissed. Sure, he lets you hold his calloused hands as much as you want and allows himself to be drawn into your embrace, but it’s not enough. Surely there’s nothing wrong, nothing disgusting about you wanting more physical intimacy with your long-term boyfriend that you share a home with, right? But Kageyama’s always been strict and restrained when it comes to all types of pleasure and in turn, he holds you to the same restrictions, making sure neither of you become too self-indulgent.

You try to push it to the back of your mind, successfully laying it to rest as you enjoy the time you spend with your lover. You don’t necessarily agree with Kageyama on everything, but you know everything he says and does comes out of love and care for you and if the only penalty is less sex and a little less freedom, so be it. Every day feels like a routine and at first you fidget and itch for more, but you quickly settle into the comfortable monotony of your shared life, finding tranquility in the steady and constant flow. Which is why you’re startled to say the least when you’ve already got your bags packed, ready to tag along with Kageyama as his team travels for an away game this weekend, but Kageyama just smiles at you and tells you to put away your things.

“You’ve been so good recently that I figured you might like some alone time to catch up and hang out with your girlfriends. It’s been awhile since you’ve seen them, right?”

Confused, but excited, you eagerly nod and Kageyama’s heart warms at the way your eyes sparkle. He’d have to thank Hinata for the idea later. Unknown to you, the two had briefly ran into each other and caught up, sharing about their relationships and he’d been surprised when Hinata had casually mentioned that his girlfriend was out of town, spending the week away with some friends and having a “girl’s trip”. He found the idea of you being away from him for so long with people he didn’t know very well unsettling, but as Hinata continued to rave about how healthy it was to have some time apart and how nice it was to have your own same gender friends to chat with, he pondered the idea more. Hinata certainly seemed happy and content with his relationship. Maybe there’s something to be said about this crazy idea after all.

But Kageyama’s not nearly as lax as Hinata and there are some rules and agreements set in place before he heads out. Be home by 10pm. Call him when you wake up and before you go to sleep. And the hard rules both of you live by still stand. No drugs. No alcohol. You can’t help but think he sounds even more strict than the summer camps you’d been to as a child and that it seems silly for a woman in her 20s to have a curfew, but your excitement at being able to hang out with all your girlfriends helps you fling those thoughts to the side as you hurriedly rush to your phone and message your friends.

Kageyama didn’t have anything against your friends, but he was insistent on the two of you always being together in your free time, leaving little room for you see you friends in person, so your phone explodes with messages as your friends quickly eat up the opportunity to have a long overdue girls weekend with you. That Friday night, despite the fact that the bed is colder than usual and overwhelmingly large without Kageyama’s presence beside you, you fall asleep with a smile on your face, your heart warm and aflutter at the prospect of seeing your dearest friends for the first time in ages.

The sun has barely risen, but you’re already wide awake and scouring your closet for the perfect outfit to wear, finally settling on a sweater and jeans paired with a strappy set of heels you know Kageyama disapproves of, always worried that you might twist your ankle. But today’s a special day and you know for a fact that these heels make your ass and legs look amazing. The morning flies by as you prance around the empty house to an upbeat playlist, going through your skincare routine and applying makeup for the first time in months. You usually save it for special occasions and date nights, but when Kageyama had realized how unhealthy restaurant food was, eating out became a thing of the past and the two of you mostly stayed at home becoming homebodies. Satisfied with your appearance you make your way to the restaurant your friends had chosen for brunch and after a flurry of warm hugs and giddy greetings, all of you sit down and peruse the menu.

Your friends gleefully look over the brunch cocktails and look at you in surprise when you order a cup of coffee instead. It’s such a different choice than the college senior partier in you would have made all those years ago, but when they question you about it, you just laugh it off and tell them Kageyama doesn’t approve of drinking, so you’d cut it out of your life after the two of you started dating. A knot forms in your stomach at the concerned looks they send your way and share among each other and you try to assure them that it’s fine, completely normal couple behavior, but they aren’t having any of your excuses and the knot tightens as their interrogation continues.

“He doesn’t let you drink at all?”

“He monitors and controls everything you eat?”

“He times how long you sleep for every night?”

“You guys haven’t had sex in months?”

You slap a hand over your friend’s mouth as that scandalous question comes out louder than intended, but you bite your bottom lip as you slowly nod in response and you can feel warmth rising to your face as tears threaten to overflow from the looks of pity being directed at you. 20 Things Under $20 for Eating at LARP

For this post, I’m offering you 20 items that are each under $20! These items will help you stay fed and hydrated at game. These could be anything from at home food prep items to stuff that makes it easier when you’re on location. The links will all be to Amazon — but Amazon is very much not the only place to purchase these items! Be sure to shop at your favorite retailer or maker!

1. Plastic Wine Bottles

This is easily the best way to carry water at game -- and so very cheap! At $13 for four bottles, you don’t even have to worry if you accidentally break or ruin one. Be sure to make labels for yours for easy identification, as I’m starting to see these show up more often to games!

2. Bottle Holder for your Plastic Wine Bottle

The bottle of water doesn’t do you any good if it’s not on your person! Carry one around on your belt, and make sure it’s full at all times! You can pick one of these up for just under $10.

3. Pint Sized Mason Jars I used these for the DIY Ramen recipe -- they’re about $9 for two -- and the Ball brand is pretty much the standard in Mason Jars. These are also available at my grocery store. I will say -- don’t buy craft mason jars for cooking, get mason jars that are intended for canning or pickling. 4. Half-Pint Mason Jars I used these for the Summer Porridge recipes. I intentionally got them in a different color so I could spot them more easily in my cooler vs. the Pint Mason Jars. The size difference is a dead give away -- but let’s be honest, I get tired at games and will take any help I can get. These come in at about $8 - $10 for four, and are also available at my grocery store. 5. Digital Food Scale Honestly, this is the best way to make sure you’re making and eating the right portion sizes. Weigh your pasta! Weigh your cheese. 6. Individual Coffee Creamer / Half and Half Don’t fight with bringing and cooling a bottle of creamer. Go ahead and splurge on the individual packets. You can get a HUGE box for about $20, and they last forever. 7. Better than Bouillon Base I don’t tend to like to buy broth or stock for the house, it goes stale more quickly than I can use it. Instead, I get this stuff! It’s about $5 - $7 at the grocery store for 1 pot, and that pot lasts forever. I use it in place of demi-glace or stocks and broths. Acacia Wood Plate Plates can be super hard to find for game. I personally love the Acacia Wood plates available on Amazon! For about $10 - $15 (depending on what you can get for shipping) these look great, and mine’s held up for over two years now with no signs of stopping. It’s got a nice, smooth top also -- so it’s easy to clean!

As a side note to this recommendation, and the three that follow -- I never recommend getting disposable items. There’s a lot of arguments that can be made for the environment, etc -- but let me give you two far more selfish arguments to be made for real flatware and serving ware:

First the disposable stuff always looks like crap. They’ll be glaring problems in any photos taken of you, or your camp site. Secondly -- you will be annoyed trying to eat off disposable items. They’re flimsy, they break easy, they can’t handle heat or moisture well, they don’t cut food properly... Essentially, do yourself a favor. Get the real deal. It’s a single investment that you won’t regret.

9. Simple Flatware Set I use a real iron flatware set, but I’ve been thinking of switching over to something a little more modern. The problem with iron is that it’s very difficult to take care of, and it flavors your food when you eat with it. (Iron flavored oatmeal is not what I was going for!) Getting something like this (that you won’t be upset if you lose a piece) is one of the best solutions. Get something simple with classic lines, and they’ll fit right in with any aesthetic. These are $15 for 2 sets of flatware.

10. Wooden Bowl A lot of people source these out of second hand stores. Bowls are way easier to find than flatware and plates. But if you’re looking to buy one brand new -- I’ve got a link below. Pay special attention to the size of the bowls, try to get yourself something in the 6 - 8 inch range. 11. Wooden Mug Avoid. Metal. Mugs. Anytime you try to drink a hot drink out of a metal mug you will understand why I’m making this statement. Get yourself something wood that’s made for both hot and cold drinks, and you’ll be much, much happier. Wooden mugs also insulate your drink a little better than metal, so your drink stays tastier longer. For usually about $15 you can get something serviceable for a good hot cup of coffee, or a can of soda. The one below fits about 12 ounces, and is designed for hot drinks as well. If you want something more unique, or of a larger size -- hit up a ren faire, but be prepared to pay for the better craftsmanship!

12. Leather Mug Belt Strap This one is kind of a gimme -- but is worth adding to the list. These are available EVERYWHERE. Chances are, someone at your game makes them! You can usually get one for under $10. Things to look for: Get something that closes securely, but can be opened with one hand. (I like snaps or the latch closures). Get real leather! Cloth or vinyl will fall apart too quickly. 13. Electric Tea Kettle Hot water is the name of the game at gathering. With it, you can make instant coffee, hot tea, cocoa, ramen noodles, sous vide, or fill a hot water bottle to warm up your bed at night. For $15, you can get a good cheap one that plugs into a wall outlet, and won’t necessitate you having a camp stove.

15. Paper Teabags for Loose Leaf Tea If you’re like me, tea is your lifeblood. But making loose leaf tea at game can be a time consuming venture, especially when it comes to clean up. Make your life easier! For $5 -- turn your loose leaf tea into little bags you can just throw away after brewing.

16. Sterno Stove If you’re short on space, and you don’t want to worry about propane stoves, you can always invest in a tiny Sterno Stove. Sterno Stoves don’t get as hot as propane, but they’re much smaller, and easier to cover for LARP immersion. Sterno cans are also pretty cheap! 17. Sterno Cans To go with the above, if you need Sterno cans, they go about $5 for three, and will last about 45 minutes each (good for one per meal). (Side note: if you need to snuff a Sterno can it’s super easy, just toss the lid on top and let the oxygen run out until the fire dies).

18. Travel Cooler Get yourself the best cooler you can afford at the biggest size you can fit. Your cooler will be your best friend. Don’t try to make due on cheap Styrofoam coolers -- they leak like crazy, they lose a lot of heat, and animals can get into them way too easily. Measure the space in your car where your cooler would go, and start from there. Of anything on your list worth spending more than $20 on, this is it! The better your cooler, the better your stuff will stay cold! But if you need some place to start, here’s a decent cooler for $20!

19. Reusable Ice Packs I can’t sing the praises of ice packs enough. They don’t melt into water at the bottom of your cooler, and they’re designed to stay ice as long as possible. Get the largest ones you can fit and afford, as the larger block of ice will take longer to melt. I got a BUNCH from work when we ordered food in, and they were just going to throw the ice packs away. But if that’s not an option for you, then you can buy them online!

20. Sous Vide Bag Kit Standard Sous Vide cooking is to put something in a bag and leave it in hot water for 1 - 8 hours. But we can use Sous Vide as a starting place to reheat items for game without needing to make a pot dirty! Put your food in a sous vide bag for transit, then heat it up in your hot water kettle at game. The kit below goes for about $8, and the bags are reusable! So when you’re done heating and eating, just seal the bag back up and toss it with the rest of your kit to be washed when you get home.

6 Ways to Make Your Coffee Routine More Sustainable

Coffee and the American morning go together like peanut butter and jelly. More than 60 percent of Americans drink it daily, the country averaging three cups per person for a total of 400 million cups of coffee per day. The United States leads consumer consumption globally.

The downside to America’s coffee habit is rampant waste: One sobering statistic suggests 25 billion cardboard and styrofoam cups, used only once, are tossed into the American waste stream each year.

Coffee drinking will never be a truly closed-loop, sustainable activity — for starters, it grows in far-flung places. Given climate change threatens coffee production worldwide, every effort to reduce one’s carbon footprint helps ensure a future with coffee in it; this includes buying beans from thoughtful roasters, going the manual brewing route at home, and carrying reusable vessels.

1. Know the Roaster

The first step to conscientious coffee drinking is to consider the bean source. Specialty coffee roaster groups such as Cooperative Coffee, which boasts over 20 members, source organic coffee from small-scale farmers, emphasizing long-term, sustainable practices. Counter Culture, although not a member of such a cooperative, applies the same ethos with its remarkable transparency, laying bare all its 300-plus contracts with farmers, as well as measuring its greenhouse gas emissions, plastic reduction, and pricing.

Other roasters have overhauled their operations and capital investments. For example, Peet’s Coffee built the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified roasting plant in Alameda, Calif., in 2007. More than 75 percent of construction waste from the project was recycled. Currently, Peet’s roasting operations, serving 252 locations across the U.S., use 40 percent less natural gas, run on high efficiency lighting, and conserve water use.

2. Pick Packaging Wisely

To keep coffee fresh, home users can’t buy in bulk, rather deferring to 12- and 16-ounce bags. The cumulative effect: 145 million bags into the garbage worldwide, annually. To combat this, Brooklyn Roasting Company’s 12-ounce tin-steel containers are designed for segregation by magnet in landfills.

Some roasters, such as Sweet Bloom in Denver and Sightglass in San Francisco, offer not just biodegradable, but compostable bags. However, consumers must remember to remove the tin tie and degassing valve. Even further along the curve is Elevate Packaging’s completely compostable coffee bag. Companies like TerraCycle offer recycling solutions for coffee bags, though the onus is on the consumer to track down deposit bins.

3. Grind With Care

Compared to electric machines, manual grinders require more time, effort, and, unfortunately, can be limited in capacity to less than the equivalent of two mugs. The good news is that the build quality and precision of manual grinders introduced in the last decade means users won’t sacrifice precision, control, or longevity.

Spare those elbows and shoulder joints with a quality hand grinder offering steel burrs for speed and uniformity and two-mug capacity (at least 35 grams). Plan on spending far more than $100 on grinders like the 1Zpresso J series, JX, Kinu M47, or Orphan Lido 3.

4. Do it for the Gram

Specialty coffee enthusiasts know brewing, like baking, demands careful measurements. However, few modern analog scales are sensitive enough to measure within 1 gram of precision. Plus, most scales are digital, requiring batteries or electricity. The solar scale by MUJI is one of few renewable energy options offering 1 gram increments.

5. Find a Reusable Filter

Brewing coffee at home saves money and cuts down on to-go cups. For those lucky enough to own a Chemex Coffeemaker, first made in 1941 (and seen in Don Draper’s kitchen in “Mad Men”), a reusable cloth filter or cone can be used in place of single-use paper filters. The CoffeeSock is handmade in Austin, Texas, from organic cotton grown in North Carolina.

Maintenance is simple: Rinse and dry between each use, then boil every four to six weeks to remove coffee oils. Stainless steel filters are even easier to maintain. Ovalware and Barista Warrior both sell cones in three finishes: stainless steel, gold and rose gold/copper, respectively. Able Kone has great design chops, albeit for double the price.

6. Consider the Cup

Most — almost all — cups can’t be recycled because they are coated with a plastic resin. Companies have made strides toward compostable or recyclable versions, though so far, there’s been little scale. Starbucks recently announced product trials of greener cups with biodegradable liners. Of course, this still requires users to dispose of them properly.

Besides the sheer physical volume of waste, cup production is energy- and resource-intensive. According to the nonprofit Clear Water Fund, “Eighty percent of the pollution happens upstream during the extraction and manufacturing phase of the product’s life-cycle before it even reaches a consumer’s hands. Transporting used cups to a landfill or recycling facility is energy intensive.”

Instead of demanding technology serve throwaway culture, a collective mind shift, like we did with straws, can curtail waste. In essence: Carry a reusable mug. A host of options have hit the market, employing different materials and solutions to the same problem. As an incentive to BYO, many coffee shops now offer discounts for the effort.

The Joco Cup features a glass wall wrapped in silicone. However, one drawback for consumers on foot and not in cars is that the heavier glass can drop and shatter. Keep Cup offers a lighter solution: In addition to glass and stainless steel, the company produces a reusable plastic version. Additionally, an innovative brand out of Australia won a design award for its Huskee Cup made of coffee husk, an organic waste material produced during coffee milling. Skip bamboo cups for now; they’ve been shown to leach chemicals into hot liquids.

Of course, the ultimate way to enjoy coffee from a café sustainably is to sit down with a ceramic mug and sip it mindfully, like they did in the old days. But until that time arises, consider these actionable items to make your coffee consumption better for the environment.
