Kaiju Week in Review (January 14-20, 2024)

Ultraman Blazar's finale aired on Friday. It was a solid capper to what's easily the best entry in the Ultra Series since I was an undergrad, full of heart and pyrotechnics. There were a few major loose ends—Captain Gento is better at keeping secrets than most hosts—which I'm hoping the movie, due in late February, will address. If you're looking for a place to start with the long-running franchise, it would be one of my first recommendations. Great effects, great cast, tons of new kaiju, and a blend of novelty (lots of focus on the tensions between the defense team and the larger monster-fighting organization; a host who's in charge of said defense team) and returning to form (Blazar yowls plenty but is an Ultra of few words; the power-ups and goofy weapons are kept to a minimum). And even if you don't want to commit to a whole show, episode 22, focusing on a hapless salesman of kaiju insurance, is a must-see for any fan of the genre. There seem to be no worlds left to conquer at Tsuburaya for lead director Kiyotaka Taguchi, so as I've been saying since around 2015: Toho, are you paying attention?

Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, the regraded black and white version of Godzilla Minus One, is coming to North American theaters for one week starting January 26. Toho's yanking both versions from theaters after February 1—puzzling considering that the film is likely going to be nominated for the Best Visual Effects Oscar tomorrow. Takashi Yamazaki led a Godzilla delegation to the Academy's visual effects "bakeoff", in which voters watch highlights from the ten shortlisted films and their VFX teams explain their work. IndieWire reports that Yamazaki's presentation drew the most applause, describing Minus One as the "potential frontrunner." The Hollywood Reporter likes its chances too. Nominations will be announced starting at 8:30 AM EST. The Creator seems to be its biggest competition.

Godzilla Minus One also recently cleared $50 million at the U.S. box office, in the process passing the first Demon Slayer as the highest-grossing Japanese-language film ever released in the U.S. Some outlets are reporting that it's the highest-grossing Japanese film ever released here, which isn't accurate; the English-dubbed Pokémon: The First Movie made almost $86 million back in 1999. (And I think it's plausible that something like Rodan or Godzilla vs. Megalon would be the champ if you figured out how much they grossed and adjusted for inflation.)

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #4 brought Godzilla and Tiamat to Atlantis, forcing Aquaman to release the Kraken to defend his city. Incredibly, this is the third Kraken associated with the Monsterverse, after Na Kika (called Kraken when it was introduced in the King of the Monsters novelization) and the main antagonist of the Skull Island cartoon. I'm guessing it's going to have a shorter lifespan than either of them though.

In other Godzilla comic news, IDW will be putting out another intriguing one-shot in May, titled Godzilla: Mechagodzilla 50th Anniversary. Past comics from the publisher have included multiple Mechagodzilla models, but this one seems to be going above and beyond. Rich Douek is writing; Andrew Lee Griffith is illustrating. The logline:

For 50 years, the King of the Monsters, Godzilla, has gone toe to toe with its robotic doppelgänger, Mechagodzilla! As an intrepid reporter profiles the history of Mechagodzilla and its creator before the launch of the newest model, he finds himself entangled in a much deeper conspiracy. A decades-spanning adventure celebrating the mechanical monster's milestone!

One of master kaiju illustrator Shinji Nishikawa's books will receive an English translation courtesy of Titan Books. Awkwardly titled Godzilla: The Encyclopedia of Godzilla, the Japanese edition included over 100 full-bodied illustrations of various Godzilla series kaiju and analyses of their designs (alongside plenty of Nishikawa's trademark chibis). I'm sold, suffice to say.

Ryo Momota, director of the short tokusatsu film Revive! Smile Rock Giant God, has put the whole thing on YouTube with English subtitles for your amusement. It posits that a real rock formation outside of Tamano City will come to life to help its citizens in their hour of need. Very low-budget.

Kaiju Brooklyn is a one-day con that began filling a longtime void for East Coast kaiju fans last year. Here's the first major piece of news about their June 1 event: they'll be screening The Return of Godzilla outdoors at day's end. Consider me highly tempted.

Kaiju United has a new, wide-ranging interview with Barry Goldberg, webmaster of the legendary Barry's Temple of Godzilla. That fan site was my first window into the wider world of Godzilla in the early 2000s, and it's only been updated a few times since, so I was pretty interested to read how its creator was doing. Don't get your hopes up for a revival: he's still a Godzilla fan (loved Minus One, Shin not so much), but has moved on to other things. Great insights from a Big Name Fan who stayed humble.

WHAT’s IN? - April 2007 - Keyword Interview

♪Preocupaciones --¿Cuáles son vuestras mayores preocupaciones en este momento? M▲ Ninguna en particular. Para este tipo de cosas, creo que es lo mismo que no tener ninguna si no se te viene nada a la mente inmediatamente. A▲ No echan reemisiones de "Full House". Es una comedia extranjera, ¿la conoces? Me gusta. Me gustaría verla otra vez~. --La de Shinji es "la resaca". S▲ Llevo componiendo todo este tiempo, luego me reuní con mis compañeros por primera vez en bastante tiempo y bebí demasiado cuando salí a beber con Aki... Lamento sacar un tema desagradable, pero ¿no se dice siempre "vomitar por la nariz"? A▲ No utilizan la palabra "vomitar". S▲ Vaya~. Y▲ Cuándo van a terminar los trabajos de construcción en la carretera Yamate. Está aborratada y llena de polvo, no me gusta...

S▲ La colcha de buena calidad de Nishikawa. Llevo usando la misma 10 años... Me encantan los bordes, la parte en la que es esponjosa como el algodón. Y▲ Te entiendo~. La parte que te pones alrededor de las orejas, ¿verdad? S▲ Sí. Me gusta usar esa parte para envolver mi dedo gordo. Y▲ Cigarrillos extranjeros. Un conocido me los dio. Cigarrillos - no vas a fumar los de ninguna marca salvo la tuya, ¿no? Está bien si es la versión extranjera de los que sueles fumar, pero supongo que usaré el regalo como decoración~ (risas).

♪Viaje --¿Cuál es vuestro viaje más memorable? M▲ El primer tour de SID. Fue una gira junto a varios grupos justo antes de que firmásemos con nuestra discográfica, divertida pero dura al mismo tiempo, me dejó muchos recuerdos. A▲ Roma. Cuando estábamos montando el DVD me preguntaron "¿quieres intentar hacer un remix?" y me ofrecieron la oportunidad, así que pensé que sería genial convertir mis recuerdos de Roma en música. S▲ El viaje al autoconocimiento. Y▲ Fui a América en mi primer año de instituto. Fue por la costa oeste; en ese momento, mis padres me dijeron que fuera, que ir al extranjero es una buena oportunidad. Era o bien China, o bien América, y yo fui a América.

♪Línea de salida --¿Algo que queréis empezar a hacer ahora? M▲ Cocinar. A▲ Tocar el violín o algo. S▲ El cepillo de dientes eléctrico de Sonicar○. Y▲ Nada en especial.

♪Enemigo --¿Vuestro mayor enemigo? M▲ Yo mismo. A▲ Yo mismo. Yo mismo cuando estoy en plan vago. Cuando no puedo progresar sin trabajar duro, quiero luchar contra mi lado perezoso y vencer. S▲ Yo mismo cuando me pongo tímido. Porque me abrazo las rodillas en mi habitación. Porque me pongo en modo "¡Apagado! (dicho en un tono fabuloso)" cuando llego a casa. Porque mi corazón también se pone en modo "¡Apagado! (dicho con un tono todavía mejor)". En otras palabras, es una situación en la que me concentro demasiado en algo que he empezado para distraerme, y no puedo progresar con la tarea principal (risas).

Me siento como si siguiéramos de gira. A▲ Mis compañeros de grupo. Aparte de ellos, mi familia, etc. También los fans, pero mis compañeros de grupo van antes. S▲ Mi familia. --Familia. S▲ ... se escribe así, pero se pronuncia "compañeros de grupo". Todos▲ (risas). Y▲ Los miembros de SID y mis padres.

♪Lágrimas --¿Algo por lo que hayáis llorado últimamente? M▲ El Nippon Budokan. A▲ Lloré desconsoladamente con la escena de Full House en la que Michelle dice "me odian". S▲ Kayou Suspense [es una serie]. M▲ Todo lo que has escrito son mentiras~ (risas). S▲ Nah. Pero no la he visto hace poco. Y▲ Pero ya no echan Kasasu (risas). --Yo también estaba pensando eso, pero me dije "bueno~" y preferí no mencionarlo (risas). Yuuya-san escribió "nada", ¿no lloras cuando ves series o películas? Y▲ En raras ocasiones. --¿Qué te hace llorar? No importa si pasó hace mucho. Y▲ Lloré por una serie una vez. Se llama "PURE" y es la serie que más me gusta de todas. La última escena en la que se leía la carta, me llegó.

♪Sueños --¿Con qué soñasteis ayer? M▲ No soñé. No sueño. A▲ Que me reñía alguien de la oficina. Una persona que normalmente es amable se enfadaba conmigo. S▲ Suspense. --Claro, suspense porque has visto Kasasu (risas). Y▲ Por algún motivo, salía mi amigo de mi ciudad natal. Como los sueños son desde tu punto de vista, no te ves a ti mismo en sueños, ¿no? Quiero verme al menos una vez.

♪Vergüenza --¿Cuál fue la cosa más vergonzosa que se os haya quedado grabada? M▲ Mi cremallera estaba completamente bajada durante un concierto. Fue hace 2 o 3 años. --¿Cuándo te diste cuenta? M▲ Los fans me lo dijeron (risas). --¿Te diste la vuelta y te subiste la cremallera? (risas) M▲ No. Llegados a ese punto, lo gestioné como si fuera parte de la actuación y me la subí en plan guay (risas). A▲ En un concierto en Osaka, Mao-kun me pidió que dijera "algo en kansai-ben" y, sin pensar, le contesté "nande ya nen? [por qué]". --Qué forma tan cliché de decirlo. A▲ Fin de la partida, ¿verdad? (risa incómoda). No sé por qué dije eso, qué vergüenza. S▲ Después de comer en un restaurante de ramen, me di cuenta de que no tenía suficiente dinero en la cartera y volví a casa para buscar más tras dejarles mi carné de conducir. Y▲ No recuerdo nada.

♪Queja inútil --Por favor, contadnos algo sobre lo que os habéis quejado un poco. M▲ ¿¡No podéis seguir vendiendo cigarrillos a partir de las 11 de la noche!? A▲ Sacad algún software interesante para la PSP. Quiero jugar a "Monster Hunter", pero como el resto de juegos son aburridos, aún no me he comprado una PSP. S▲ ¡Dadme dinero si os apiadáis de mi! (Sacado de la serie "Ienaki ko"). Y▲ No puedo decirlo. Porque no me quejo un poco, me quejo mucho (risa incómoda).

♪Ideales --¿Cuál es vuestra idea del hombre ideal? M▲ Egashira 2:50. A▲ Sera Masanori. S▲ Adultos infantiles. Es el eslogan de un anuncio de coches o algo. Y▲ Alguien que parezca leal (imposible).

♪Amor --Por favor, contadnos 3 requisitos que buscáis en el amor. M▲ Físico, compatibilidad, consideración. --¿Es el físico lo más importante? M▲ Es la consideración. Pero el físico también es importante. Es una parte de los méritos de esa persona, ¿no? Como hay gente a la que no le pega el aire infantil, también hay gente a la que no le pega su apariencia de adultos. Está bien si su físico refleja quienes son en realidad. --Entonces no es alguien cuyo físico te guste, sino una persona a la que le pegue su apariencia. Cuando mencionaste la compatibilidad, te refieres a la impresión que te transmite, ¿no? ¿Qué tipo de persona es la que te suele gustar? M▲ Aparte de la forma de vestir que te permite saber cómo son a primera vista, la gente a la que se le da bien tanto escuchar como hablar. No me gusta la gente solo escucha, y me gusta aún menos la gente que no para de hablar... Esa parte es la misma que "consideración". --¿Cuándo sientes esa consideración? M▲ Consideración sin palabras. Consideración que hace que no tengas que decir cosas que no necesitan ser dichas. A▲ Consideración, amabilidad, amor. --¿A qué te refieres tú con consideración? Es el día en el que lo anunciamos en un concierto. S▲ La llegada de Perry. Y▲ ¿Probablemente mi cumpleaños? Porque no estaría en SID de no haber nacido. Es un día señalado.

From the lyrics to "smile" and "Hanabira", we picked keywords and used them to form questions, then had them answered in a survey. With that as the foundation, we forged ahead with the interview! We'll close in on various personal points of information.

♪Worries ――What's your greatest worry at the moment? M▲ Nothing in particular. About this sort of things, I think it's the same as not having any if nothing comes to mind immediately. A▲ There aren't re-runs of "Full House". It's like a foreign home comedy, do you know about it? I like it. I'd like to watch it again~. ――Shinji-san's is "hangover". S▲ I've been composing all this time, then met up with the members after a long while and drank too much when I went drinking with Aki...... ♪Journey ――What's your most memorable trip? M▲ SID's first tour. It was a multi-band tour just before we signed on with our label, fun and also harsh at the same time, it left me with many memories. A▲ Rome. Right when we were putting the DVD together, I was asked, "Want to try working on a remix?" and offered the opportunity, so I thought it'd be great to turn my memories of Rome into music. S▲ Journey to self-discovery. Y▲ Went to America in my first year of middle school. It was around the west coast; at that time, my parents told me to go, that it's a good thing to go overseas. It was either China or America, and I went to America.
