Shikoku sacred site tour Famous spots in Shikoku
The Shikoku Sacred Sites Tour is a religious journey that involves pilgrimages to 88 Buddhist sacred sites in the Shikoku region of Japan. This is a pilgrimage route said to have been established by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) during the Heian period, and it visits sacred sites scattered throughout the Tokushima, Kagawa, Ehime, and Kochi prefectures of Shikoku. It is generally recommended to walk around Shikoku's sacred sites, and each sacred site has a temple, and when you visit, you chant sutras and pray. Visiting sacred sites is sometimes done as part of purification of the body and mind, as part of ascetic training, or in search of prayers or the fulfillment of desires. The route and style of your pilgrimage will vary depending on your personal preference and physical fitness, but you can walk the entire way or travel part of it by car or public transportation. Many people go on pilgrimages to sacred sites and visit Shikoku's beautiful natural and historical places, where they seek refreshment in mind and body as well as spiritual growth. Pilgrims are called ``Penro-san'' and do not need any special clothing or equipment, but it is recommended that they wear comfortable shoes and clothes, and if necessary, bring rain gear and sunshades. Also, you may have to wait in line at some temples, so it's important to plan with plenty of time. Touring sacred sites in Shikoku is a wonderful opportunity to experience Japan's traditional beliefs and culture, and has become a place for spiritual healing and growth for many people.
