I might have to be that guy, apologies ahead for my very entrepreneur plugging- like behavior. It's a lovely time here in Ireland. If you can not see the beauty of Ireland when it's raining and dreary then I can't help you. This weather is only second to Scotland sunshine and then rain. Either way you are still cold and even more miserable than I can imagine if you don't enjoy it. Time for me to promote my Sassenach gin and whiskey, it will warm you up and put a smile on your face. If it doesn't, don't take it personal, but I again can't help you. Being a scotsman in Ireland has many benefits, you can understand mostly the Gaelic, relate to the people well, and well they like a drink as much as they do. I do hope all of your trips here are lovely, but I just might be having the best time of all.

Whiskey, not whisky
Kentucky bourbon it is, for McTavish, as formally announced on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CvxuLwXBDgt/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D.
Website, here: https://mctavishspirits.com/. Very instructive: The Sassenach vs. The Warchief. How original.
With a hefty pricetag. Heh, and Mordor thought the Sassenach was a rip-off?
Tumblr media
The similarities apparently also extend to the marketing pitch: young, struggling actor dreams big, goes to the States, finds relative critical success there, walks down memory lane. And shares with the world his real, real passion he's "been working on for a while".
Yes. I am selling it. I don't have to pay for it, but... you do. Ugh. I have no words, wow. Oh, the entitlement and the smugness. Completely expected.
Let's unpack:
This is by no means or stretch of imagination a whimsical, vanity project and is carefully differentiated from a white label, which would have meant that the guy was basically lending his beard and voice to the (generic) product, in the hopes it will sell well enough and for as long as possible. No: it is, to quote the leaflet, "meticulously hand selected". Oh.
This is also a long-shot, well prepared blow:
Tumblr media
Sorry: the website thinks I am a robot, even if there's just one and only R2D2 in our universe, but you should be able to get more details by yourselves. It is an LLC (easy-peasy, no hassle), filed on July 27 2023.
For the moment, the SM reactions are rather glacial. Sam's crowd is not amused, and with good reason:
Tumblr media
I saw it coming, now the elephant is on the couch in the middle of the parlor and I have to say I am still perplexed, in a way, even if I shouldn't.
Sam's project is not the only thing he copies, btw. Check this out:

Yes, it's a Scottish brand I know absolutely nothing about (all input welcome), but still (http://thespiritscompany.com/portfolio/sir-mactavish-scotch-whisky/?age-verified=4b7d1b53bb):
McTavish, Sir Mactavish... Potato, potahto. In Europe, and specifically the EU , it would go to court for trademark infringement in 4, 3, 2, 1, especially since it could cause confusion, deception, or mistake. For comparison, Sassenach's German lost legal battle was sparked by way less than that: a mere partial homophony with the (obscure?) Sasse distillery in Schoppingen, somewhere in Westphalia (https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/entertainment/celebrity/sam-heughan-loses-legal-battle-25578518 - this is the link I found first). But McTavish is clever enough to clearly go for the US market first and foremost.
And as a reminder, in S's situation, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO)'s position has been particularly, and might I add, gratuitously, aggressive. I am intrigued enough and might get back to this in a separate post: don't hold your breath, though.
I still need to digest that and the question asked a couple of evenings ago remains open: what prompted S's sudden change of schedule? McTavish Anon might have been onto something, perhaps.
Tu quoque, McTavish? MIK, my earasaid. Now you understand why the sudden, subtle change on S's Twitter bio? Not only related to the SAG-AFTRA strike, I bet whatever you want on it (there's only a limited number of times I can bet my farm, heh).
[Much later edit, November 2023: It turns out this is an unashamed white label project. My bad for not immediately seeing it.]

Do you think that Sam‘s role at TCND does him help to generate new opportunities for future roles or to increase his recognition outside from Outlander?
I'm probably going to upset a few people here, but I don't think this role will help him raise his name recognition. He's a C-list actor who still isn't known outside the OL fan community. Maybe you can remember his face, but certainly not his name.
For me, this is also visible in his marketing campaign for Sassenach Spirits. He sells his whiskey widely in liquor stores, but unfortunately not in cooperation with well-known names in the restaurant or hotel trade. This is probably because he is not known in these areas and has no connections there.
However, I also believe that as long as he is continually offered roles and can therefore work and his spirits sell at a consistent level, he is quite happy with his current situation.

First may I wish you the very best for the New Year, may you continue to be the voice of reason
I was very interested in your posts about the whiskey and the decision about the name Sassenach. If the name is changed to Lallybroch would Sam need to get approval from DG? After all the name is from her books, her creation. Not an actual place. What are your thoughts?
It was already discussed in the comments from the post where I told about filing the new trademark and another post deriving from it as well.
In fact it's a unification of 2 English words Lally (Lazy) Broch (Tower). And it is explained in the registration document.
While it's from the books of DG, she doesn't own a trademark for it or is selling products under that name. Therefor she can't oppose it as a trademark. It would just be a nice gesture if Sam acknowledges it's derived from the books of DG. But he doesn't need to do so.
Oh and thank you for your wishes. Hope you have a cheerful NYE and all the best for 2024! 🧡

The World’s Best Scotch Whisky—According To The 2023 Singapore World Spirits Competition

The Singapore World Spirits Competition has only been in existence since 2019. But in that short sum of time, it has grown into one of the most important annual judgings in all of Asia. A big reason why it attained so much stature so rapidly is because it’s run by the Tasting Alliance. These are the same folks responsible for the San Francisco World Spirits Competition—which is regarded by many in the industry as the gold standard of booze contests.
This year saw thousands of entries roll in across all major categories of adult beverage. Several weeks ago we were here talking about the best bourbon winner. It was an eyebrow-raiser, to say the least; a brand that didn’t enjoy widespread recognition, even amongst ardent aficionados of American whiskey. That all changed after the announcement of the accolade, underscoring just how valuable these contests can be for brands.
Today we’re taking a look at the top-ranked scotch from the Singapore Worlds Spirits Competition. And it’s bound to generate its own fair share of rancor. The honor belongs to The Sassenach Blended Scotch Whisky.
Why is this a controversial pick? Well, most notably it’s a blend. That means it includes a combination of malt and grain whiskies plucked from across the Scottish landscape. The conventional wisdom of the day holds that blended scotches are somehow inferior to their single malt counterparts.
If you don’t know the difference between the two categories, don’t kick yourself. It’s relativelystraightforward: single malt is whisky distilled from malted barley—and only malted barley—in a pot still at a single distillery. Blends, by contrast, can combine any number of single malts, often times collected from dozens of distilleries, and then married against a lion’s share of grain whisky.
And there lies the rub, in that last bit. Grain whiskies can come from a number of different ingredients—chiefly corn (but sometimes wheat and rye and other cereals). They are distilled in large column stills, which results in a markedly lighter flavor profile. Some deride this liquid as merely scotch-flavored vodka. Being that this component often makes up the majority of the booze in any blend, it’s a short jump to blended scotch being lesser then.
But here’s a not-so-little secret: blends can be beautiful. They are often times more accessible and “easy-drinking.” Hence why they are far and away the most popular style of scotch on the planet. And when rendered properly, they can serve up a kaleidoscopic array of tastes which is difficult to achieve when you’re only working with malt sourced from a single distillery.
And that brings us back to The Sassenach. This marmalade-hued hooch is undeniably complex. It holds a bouquet reminiscent of the sweet shop: marzipan, candied orange peel and ginger. Upon the palate is a smattering of heather, ripened stone fruit, and dried apricot. It fades after the sip in a subdued sweetness—butterscotch and nutmeg are both apparent. Overall, the 92-proof scotch leaves you with little resistance but plenty to contemplate.
For anyone who remains dismissive of the blended style, this bottle stands as a testament to the follies of your preconceived notions. Although it does so at a relatively hefty price: it typically retails at around $125 per 750ml.
The Sassenach is also a celebrity spirit. It was launched by Scottish actor Sam Heughan, back in 2020. That revelation will inevitably be met with a degree of blowback from a certain subset of drinks enthusiasts. But it’s not really a discussion worth engaging in, because either a whisky is good or it isn’t. And the Singapore World Spirits Competition makes it plainly clear in which camp this one belongs. And that brings us back to The Sassenach. This marmalade-hued hooch is undeniably complex. Sam's live talk was not a piece of new news with the Tasting Alliance. The Tasting Alliance announced the results of the 2022 judging on 9th September.
Tumblr media
The New York World Spirits Competition (NYWSC) is part of the family of wine and spirit competitions sponsored by the Tasting Alliance. It includes the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the San Francisco International Wine Competition, the New York World Wine Competition, and the Singapore World Spirits Competition.
Where SH is a well-known contestant stalwart in this family-friendly competition, earning medals.💁

SH whisky has no contribution from the Speyside Distilleries 🥃 whisky categories, either Speyside Distillers Ltd or Speyside Whisky Region.
Sassenach blended whisky comes from the Loch Lomond distillery in the Highland region where his whisky is made, which also has a light and fruity character.
Tumblr media
Perhaps 🤔 SH should hire someone who knows better Scotland’s whisky regions or at least knows more about his whisky not only medals.

Five regions of Scotland, according to the SWA
Where Loch Lomond go, Sassenach whisky go too…

Loch Lomond Group owns the Glen Scotia distillery in Campbeltown, as well as the Littlemill brand of single malt. Glen Scotia is one of the World’s Best Whisky in international competitions in a row.

Everyone is having fun with the Sam selling posts; one side likes to snark (I do that too, I like comedy, roasting others’ behavior was a staple during my growing years and never meant as mean-spirited), another side likes to post about how wretched that behavior is. Thus, the result of Mr. Heughan’s trip across the sea is a whole new flurry of “I’d never!!” on OL fandom Tumblr blogs. Ok, we’re different. That’s all it is. Sure, some people don’t mind waiting for hours to buy whiskey and meet someone they’re thrilled to meet; others can’t imagine ever doing such a thing. Hey—it’s fine. It doesn’t matter! He’s living his best life and it is my sincere hope that all of us are able to do the same. We deserve that.
Alright, that was a long detour to what I really wanted to talk about: LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THOSE WINE STORES! I’m sorry, excuse me, I am Pennsylvania born and bred. For us, the state owned the stores where alcohol is sold (employees are state employees), there was never alcohol sold in grocery stores until about ten years ago— but still only in chains that pay an exorbitant fee to get the license, our drinking age was 21 since the early 1900’s (decades before it became a national law). As a Pennsylvanian, I can’t help feeling this amazement after seeing the warehouses most of the rest of the USA apparently has! As a final note, I’ll just say it will be quite the accomplishment for The Sassenach Spirits company to crack the nut of the PA liquor control board and get permission to be sold in Pennsylvania. I’m not sure that will happen. We can’t order it in since it’s not sold here, that’s another law we have. If I really felt the need to have some, I’m not far from Ohio or West Virginia. As it is, Kentucky bourbon pleases me just fine...and our own Pennsylvania whiskeys. 😉
