From Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 to Singham Again: 7 sequels releasing in 2024!

Just as 2023 was inundated with sequels (10 in all, including the Netflix Lust Stories anthology film), 2024, as of now, is set to have eight of them, plus a spin-off. As of now, as per reports, only two—Stree 2 and Raid 2—are likely to be true sequels, just like Gadar 2 and Tiger 3 last year. Last year, these sequels were crowded between June and December, but this year, they will begin from February itself. And this time, T-Series and Jio Studios are involved as producers in three movies each.

Love Sex Aur Dhokha 2 (earlier film in 2010) The next in the Balaji Telefilms’ bold franchise that introduced Rajkummar Rao and was Nushrratt Bharuccha’s first hit, the film was to release in February itself, but has now been postponed to April 19. Dibakar Banerjee is writer-director and co-producer again. As of now, Nimrit Ahluwalia, Anupam Joardar and the foreign actress Rossana Elsa Scugugia are the only cast known.

Singham Again (earlier films in 2010 and 2014) The iconic Rohit Shetty character of Singham will be back after Singham (that started Rohit’s Cop Universe) and Singham Returns, on Independence Day. Kareena Kapoor Khan also ‘returns’ as his wife from the latter film. Deepika Padukone is the newest (and first female) addition to Rohit’s Cops, while the other members of his Cop Universe—Simmba a.k.a. Ranveer Singh and Sooryavanshi a.k.a. Akshay Kumar will also feature here. Tiger Shroff, Arjun Kapoor and (if buzz is true) Tiger’s father Jackie Shroff will come into this patriotic saga!

Jio Studios co-produces this spectacular production. But more importantly, this is a chance for Rohit to redeem himself after Cirkus. A small point: Singham also made a mark in cameos in Simmba and Sooryavanshi, so he will be seen for the fifth time here!

Stree 2 (earlier film in 2018) The new film once again features all the five loved characters in Stree—Shraddha Kapoor in the title role, Rajkummar Rao, Aparshakti Khurana, Pankaj Tripathi and Abhishek Banerjee. Stree was the first film in the Dinesh Vijan Horror Universe, and the sequel is again directed by Amar Kaushik. This Jio Studios co-production will also be an August release.

Metro…In Dino (earlier film in 2007) This year’s sequels will be known for their ensemble casts. Anurag Basu repeats only Konkona Sen Sharma from the nine lead players of Life In A…Metro, and adds Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Fatima Sana Shaikh. Pritam, his constant music composer, is in again. The first film had an unusual concept and theme and its music too was employed in an unusual way. The same is expected with this T-Series Films co-production.

Badass Ravikumar (earlier film, The Xpose, in 2014) This can be called a spin-off, or a sequel with a different title! Prabhu Dheva actually plays antagonist to Himesh Reshammiya’s lead character of Ravikumar, reprised from the earlier movie. The film is also produced and co-written by Himesh and has music by him, but it also marks the all-rounder’s debut as a director!

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (earlier films in 2007 and 2022) Anees Bazmee, director of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (which netted Rs. 185 crores in India) is helming the third part of the franchise that started with Priyadarshan’s cult horror comedy, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, which was his last Hindi hit, in 2007. He repeats his 2022 lead pair, Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan, with Madhuri Dixit Nene, Vidya Balan from the first film in the franchise, Naseeruddin Shah and Elnaaz Nouruzi as co-star. The music for this November release is likely to be scored by the franchise’s composer, Pritam. The film is again produced by T-Series Films.

Raid 2 (earlier film in 2018) Ajay Devgn once again plays an upright Income-Tax official in this sequel to Raid (a Rs. 100 crores grosser), which is helmed again by Raj Kumar Gupta. Vaani Kapoor is the new leading lady, while Riteish Deshmukh is the antagonist. This is yet another T-Series franchise.

Welcome to the Jungle (earlier films in 2007 and 2015) Ahmed Khan directs this multi-star adventure that will try and reprise the whacky mood of its predecessors. Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Raveena Tandon, Lara Dutta, Jacqueline Fernandez, Disha Patani, child artiste Vrihi Kodvara, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade and more are in the cast, including singers Daler Mehndi and Mika Singh. Jio Studios join Firoz Nadiadwala in producing the third part in his franchise of Welcome and Welcome Back, with Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal repeated from the earlier movie. What remains to be seen is whether they will be playing the same iconic characters of Rajiv and Dr. Ghunghroo, which they had done earlier, with Paresh featuring in both instalments though Akshay was only there in the first.

★ Kartik Aaryan copies Salman Khan in Love Aaj Kal still, says ‘Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya’!

Actor Kartik Aaryan took to Instagram to share a still from his upcoming film, Love Aaj Kal. The picture is from his 1990s avatar in the film, where he is called Raghu. What’s different here is that he is copying Salman Khan from the latter’s old hit, Maine Pyar Kiya.

Sharing it, Kartik wrote: “Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya Meet my other half #Raghu #Kal #1990 #LoveAajkal.” In the picture, Kartik sits, resting his back against a local transport, an auto perhaps. He is wearing a school uniform — beige-brown trousers, white shirt, blue tie with the school’s logo on the shirt’s pocket. His hands are behind his head, just the way Salman does in a poster of Maine Pyar Kiya, stuck to the body of the auto. Salman looks quite unlike his current self in the old Maine Pyar Kiya picture.

In Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal sequel, Kartik will play two characters — one set in 1990 and the other in 2020. As Raghu from the 90s, Kartik is paired with a newcomer, Aarushi Sharma and in the story set in 2020, he is paired with Sara Ali Khan. The trailer of the film was dropped on January 17 and was trolled for its over-the-top performances, particularly by Sara Ali Khan. Many compared it with Imtiaz Ali’s earlier outing of the same name, which starred Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. Even Saif agreed that he liked the trailer of his film better. In an interaction with Indianexpress.com, he said, “I don’t know why I still remember shooting for Love Aaj Kal. I saw the trailer, and obviously, I wish them all the best. I wish Sara the best for everything she does because she is my daughter. I kind of like my film’s trailer more. What to say, but I wish them all the best.” Despite all the criticism, Imtiaz is all praise for Sara and says that she is blessed with ‘emotional intelligence’. In a statement he said, “Sara has extraordinary emotional intelligence. Her look, voice, diction and overall poise are all impeccable - making her an extremely gifted actor. Also she is completely accessible and remarkably quick to understand. She has all it takes to change the mould of the conventional Indian heroine. I had the greatest time working with her and hope to work with her again and again. She is the perfect choice for Zoe in Love Aaj Kal.”

Love Aaj Kal is love’s labour’s lost (Hindustan Times) First thought that comes to your mind after watching Imtiaz Ali's Valentine's Day offering, Love Aaj Kal is what could have prompted the filmmaker to tell a decade old story again, with modern characters who are messed up, uncertain and frivolous? Or was it just a mindless decision to cash in on the craze his lead pair - Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan - generated ever since Sara expressed her wish to 'date' Kartik, on Koffee With Karan?

Irrespective of the reason, with this reboot of his own 2009 film by the same name, Imtiaz once again invites you into the world of imperfect people, complex situations and dysfunctional relationships, and fails to weave it all together. Complete review here.

An incoherent mess (Indian Express)

If you had apprehensions about a brand new film being called by an old name, made by the same director, you were right. If you thought that despite this apparent lack of imagination, this 2.0 ‘Love Aaj Kal’ would fly, you were wrong. Imtiaz Ali’s latest version of romance in this-day-and-that age, is nothing but an incoherent mess.

The last time I saw the messy feelings of pain-pleasure-exhilaration, feelings that touch you and move you, that radiate from true lovers, was in Ali’s ‘Jab We Met’, and before, in his lovely, underrated ‘Socha Na Tha’. He hasn’t managed to capture those emotions since, not in ‘Rockstar’, nor in ‘Tamasha’, and certainly not in the misfire that was ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’. Complete review here.
