MA Fashion and Textile Practices Major Project Path - 4th September
Punk and Vivienne Westwood cont.
The Clash’s breakthrough single was unarguably ‘London’s Calling’.The song refers in part to a narrowly missed nuclear disaster on the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania in 1979. The accident involved the partial melt down of one of the nuclear reactors, and was considered to be the most serious nuclear incident in US history. ‘London Calling’ is a nod to old BBC wartime radio broadcasts declaring London had something to say, so The Clash were declaring that nuclear war had begun and it was a calling out to post-apocalyptic survivors. There are also nods to their feeling’s towards the elite who live along London’s Thames, as well as to the glorification of London in the swinging sixties and ‘phony Beatlemania’ - in the 70′s London was a bleaker place.

In the early days The Clash gigged with other bands and were the main support band for the Sex Pistols. A crossover was happening at that time, many of the American bands were coming over to observe the UK punk scene for themselves and taking the aesthetic back with them. Bands such as The Runaways - lead by charismatic lead singer Joan Jett - went from rock attitude to punk attitude almost overnight.
The Slits were another female band who were inspired by the Sex Pistols and their devil may care attitude. None of them really knew how to play or what they were doing, they made it up as they went along. The Slits would eventually hold their own with many of the male bands on the scene, although being an all female group did provoke some audience members to violence, they were often attacked for daring to be forthright females who had a voice. Drummer Palmolive (2019) said of the attitude some had towards them:
“We were very provocative but we felt we had a right to be provocative, but that didn’t give someone the right to punch you or cut a slit in your pants with a knife. I feel like in a way The Slits were a revolution with the revolution, we wanted to have the reigns to our destiny.”

Other groups with a strong female presence were trying to make themselves heard and it worked, the scene was becoming more gender balanced. Groups like Siouxsie and the Banshees and Blondie were also paving the way for women in rock. Debbie Harry from Blondie was the only female singer to sing on a Ramones track and was held in high regard by the band.

When the Ramones eventually played in the UK it was to become a seminal moment in punk rock history. The Ramones were the band that many of the UK punk bands had taken inspiration from, and now they were here in the flesh. The gig took place at The Roundhouse, London on 4th July 1976. Many bands were in the audience; The Buzzcocks, The Vibrators, Generation X, The Damned, Sex Pistols and more.

Well I can avoid it no longer, the Ramones gig was to kick punk into the mainstream but one band were to propel it to stratospheric proportions, and that band were the Sex Pistols. Already an entity managed by Malcolm McLaren and dressed in part by Vivienne Westwood, the Sex Pistols were ripe for punk stardom.
youtube
Sex Pistols [jaroshy]. (2010, May 20). The Sex Pistols - Anarchy In The U.K (official video) [Video file]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBojbjoMttI
The Sex Pistols first single was ‘Anarchy in the UK’. It was really about the state of the country at the time and the frustrations of the younger generation. They saw that people such as the monarchy lead a life which was unobtainable and unrealistic to the average person, times were hard and they were angry about it. They wanted to create something which was accessible to everyone. Johnny Rotten (2019) didn’t like the term punk but knew the ethos behind it:
“What’s really important to me is what punk turned into, honesty, originality and a genuine feel for my fellow human beings. I think the word is empathy really, and there it is, and then punk took off.”
A few of the bands were set to tour together in order to push the sound across the country. The Sex Pistols, along with The Damned, The Clash, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers and more. The tour was to be ‘The Anarchy Tour’ gigging at Universities across the nation, and initially was meant to start at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich on 3 December 1976. This first gig was cancelled at the last minute on the grounds of fearing the audience and property would be compromised, possibly due to the Sex Pistols appearing on the Bill Grundy show a few days before and using profanity. Grabbing the headlines of many national newspapers the day after the incident no doubt cast a shadow over the whole proceedings, which then lead to cancellations of many of the booked gigs. The bands continued to travel to each gig in th hope that by chance they would be allowed to play. Only three of the scheduled gigs went ahead, Leeds Polytechnic being the first, then Manchester and with another four added en route. Ian Moss (2016) was in the audience at Manchester’s Electric Circus in Collyhurst:
“It was completely life-changing, the Pistols walked on stage and it was magnetic. I had not seen people who looked liked that. They started playing and it was exciting - the music was really good - but the main thing was the attitude. I had seen David Bowie and Mick Jagger but he (Lydon) had more charisma than either of them."
The Bill Grundy incident was quite damaging for the scene at the time, the Sex Pistols were of course being themselves and some say were goaded by Grundy to swear live on camera. Either way, the media frenzy which followed labeled punk as purely being antagonistic and troublesome which saw a rise in certain elements arriving at gigs purely to cause trouble, attacking the audience and the bands themselves. The Sex Pistols decided to leave the country and head for the US to tour, when they got there no gigs had been lined up. Malcolm McLaren said nobody wanted to deal with them but ironically they finished up touring the South on the typical Country and Western routes, and then on to west coast cities such as San Francisco where they went down a storm! Suddenly America had discovered punk.
Tumblr media
Altpress, n.d. (2018). WAS THE SEX PISTOLS’ FIRST US TOUR AS DESTRUCTIVE AS REPORTS SAY?. [Photograph]. Retrieved from https://www.altpress.com/features/sex_pistols_first_u-s-_tour_destructive_1978/.
The tour of course was offensive to a large proportion of the towns they appeared in, many people demonstrated at the gigs and were  worried for the safety of its property and townsfolk. McLaren of course loved the controversy and wanted as much of the disruption as possible to be seen by the American and British press, in his eyes any exposure was good exposure. The tour had essentially been a success but Sid Vicious and his American punk girlfriend Nancy Spungen had started taking heroin and things began to change, the drug taking effected the bands creativity and energy greatly. As soon as the American tour finished in 1978, the band returned to New York and promptly broke up, right at the pinnacle of their fame. In the months that followed Sid and Nancy holed themselves up in the Hotel Chelsea and spiraled deeper into their addiction. On October 12th 1978 Sid Vicious called the police to say the body of Nancy Spungen was laying dead in the bathroom of their hotel room with a knife wound to her stomach. Vicious was immediately arrested and charged with second degree murder. Four months later he died of a heroin overdose before his trial began.
Tumblr media
Wizard Varnish, n.d. (n.d). Sid and Nancy. [Photograph]. Retrieved from http://wizardvarnish.com/wv/2017/04/13/180656/.
The events of the months prior to Sid’s death were incredibly unsettling for the ex band members, and his death shook them to the core, Jonny Rotten (2019) especially felt responsible:
“The biggest joke of all was that Sid would have never hooked up with a girl like Nancy unless I introduced her to him, which I did. So I take some really serious sense of responsibility in Sid’s demise because of that. I miss my friends.”

About the Play: Finding a husband is hardly Elizabeth Bennet's most urgent priority. But with four sisters, an overzealous match-making mother, and a string of unsuitable suitors, it's difficult to escape the subject. When the independent-minded Elizabeth meets the handsome but enigmatic Mr. Darcy, she is determined not to let her feelings triumph over her own good sense -- but the truth turns out to be slipperier than it seems. In a society where subtle snubs and deceit proliferate, is it possible for Elizabeth and Darcy to look beyond his pride and her prejudice, and to make the best match of all?
About the Show: With eighteen actors, ten crew members, choreographed dance, costumes designed by Concordia's Visual Arts faculty member, Ms. Greer Collins, expect an amazing theatrical production that you do not want to miss.

We have been informed by Public Security Bureau that policemen are being sent to different locations like supermarkets or streets to check people's passport and visa. We would like to remind our community that carrying a copy of your passport and visa in your wallet is recommended so you are fine if you are checked. Please note that the policemen will show you their working ID when they stop you. If they don't, please ask. If you forget to carry the two copies, they could take you back to their office. In this case, we suggest you contact your employer who can confirm your passport and visa information. They may also stop unaccompanied students so I would recommend that you review this procedure with them as well.
» New Residence Permits, Work Permits or Passports?
Whenever you or your family members receive new residence permits, work permits and/or passports, please be sure to send copies of your new documents to the Admissions office, in the Welcome Center (1st floor High School). Or, email soft copies to Admissions. Keeping your children's files up to date helps us keep in compliance with Chinese governmental regulations.
» No Bicycles for Children Under Age 12 on Public Streets - Shanghai International Schools Association (SISA)
The following information regarding bicycle riding in Shanghai is shared in an attempt to be helpful to all its member schools. For safety purposes, the regulations in Shanghai allow for bicycles to be ridden on public streets only by children age 12 and above. This regulation is strictly enforced in Puxi, but is unevenly applied in Pudong. The immediate danger is that families may assume that local protections for bicycle riders may be the same as in their own country, but they are not. It is important to be aware that if a child under 12 is involved in any kind of accident on a public street or crossing, the parent may be held responsible. Sidewalks and bicycle paths along public roads are considered part of the public roads. In addition, as accident insurance is relatively new to China and there are not many precedents with these situations, your own accident or medical insurance company has the right to refuse cover in the event of violation of the local law. We hope that better understanding will result in better safety for younger children.
» Community Bulletin Objectives
The Community Bulletin conveys school and student-related information and supports community, volunteer and charitable organizations. The classified section and driver/ayi notices are meant as a service to parents. With the exception of sharing information and offers from Concordia's official corporate partners, we do not support commercial ventures or for-profit organizations. The Community Bulletin editors reserve the right to omit submitted content deemed to fall outside the scope of the Community Bulletin.
» Parent Directory Privacy Policy
At Concordia, we are very protective of family information and data. The school emails only information that is important and directly related to the school and student issues. Internally, we carefully monitor what is emailed to parents and ensure it is appropriate. The use of email addresses from the parent directory for non-school related or commercial reasons is a severe misuse of the directory.
» Submitting Community Bulletin Items
The Community Bulletin is a bi-weekly newsletter. Please submit text in final format by Wednesday at noon in Arial font (maximum 100 words or 5 sentences in paragraph form with a headline) to [email protected]. Based on the schedule of the next bulletin, submissions may be included the week they are received or the following week. Any submission received after this time on the week scheduled for publication will be included in the next bulletin in two weeks. Submitted items may run for a maximum of two consecutive publications.

Reminders
» Carrying Copies of Passport and Visa

The Kansas City Chiefs Lost For The Wrong Reasons
The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the San Francisco 49ers by the final score of 22-17 on Sunday. That end result is nothing to be ashamed of. The 49ers are a good team, a physical team, a team that has played in three consecutive NFC title games. So having the ball with two minutes to go and a chance to beat a team like that on their own home turf is respectable. However, as the final seconds of the game ticked away I didn’t want to give the Chiefs an “atta boy, good hustle!” for their effort. That game was 100%, no doubts about it, completely winnable for Kansas City and they blew it time after time with stupid mistakes, mainly from the coaching staff.
As I sit typing this an hour after the game ended I’m still incredibly frustrated (although Alex Gordon hitting a three run triple in the first inning of the Royals/Angles game helped a little). After two consecutive games where Andy Reid looked like the best play caller in all of the NFL, Reid started off once again looking like a genius with a masterfully designed opening touchdown drive. Unfortunately, at that point “Good Andy” left the building and Chiefs fans were left with the same “Bad Andy” that refused to run the football in the season opening loss to the Titans. On multiple occasions Reid refused to run the ball on short yardage plays. While the 49ers do have a good run defense, it’s not as if the Chiefs weren’t having success. The Chiefs as a team averaged 4.7 yards per carry and Jamaal Charles averaged 5.3.
SO WHY DIDN’T YOU RUN THE BALL ANDY REID???????
WHY??!?!?!?!??!?!
2nd and 1: pass 3rd and 1: pass 4th and 1: go for it, pass, but it doesn’t matter because of a false start penalty
SERIOUSLY?!?!?!?!?!?!?
(At this point I’m going to have to step away from the computer for a minute because a post of nothing but caps lock and exclamation points isn’t what any of us want)
Ok, I’m back and feeling a little better. Related side note: if you’re ever feeling really frustrated by a Chiefs loss having your wife make breakfast for dinner helps. Seriously, try it some time.
So we’ve established that Reid refusing to run the football when the Chiefs were having some success doing it was a major frustration and a huge contributing factor to KC wasting an opportunity to win this game. The other moment in this game that had me absolutely wanting to break my television was the penalty for 12 men on the field on the 49ers FG attempt that gave them a first down.
That is absolutely ridiculous. Absurd. Nauseating.
I’d go on another tirade now, but Billy “Country Breakfast” Butler just stole a base in the Royals game which just reminds me of my own breakfast/dinner so I’m in a happy place at the moment.
The other thing that frustrated me to no end was how KC got away from making a conscious effort to get the ball in the hands of their best playmakers. In the passing game Alex Smith had 31 attempts and Jamaal Charles, Knile Davis, Dwayne Bowe, Travis Kelce, and DeAnthony Thomas only saw a combined total of 13 targets.
That’s unforgivable in a close game.
The fact that Anthony Fasano, Junior Hemingway, AJ Jenkins, Anthony Sherman, and Demetrius Harris saw more targets than that first group of five makes me feel like my head is going to explode!
(A well timed Mike Moustakas HR brings the blood pressure down a little)
In the Chiefs blowout win over the Patriots on Monday night Bowe, Kelce, Charles, and Davis had a combined 20 targets on Alex Smith’s 26 pass attempts. In that game KC targeted it’s best players on 77% of Smith’s passes (compared to just 42% Sunday). That is how KC is going to win on offense. Run the football. Get the ball in the hands of their best playmakers. I believe you can win football games, a LOT of football games, maybe ALL the football games with Alex Smith as your starting quarterback.
BUT……..
You have to have a game plan that fits his abilities. Alex Smith is not a guy that you just drop back over and over and wait for him to make something happen with his off the chart elite God given abilities. That’s not his game. Alex Smith is a QB that can smartly and efficiently distribute the ball to playmakers that……wait for it……MAKE PLAYS!
GASP!!!!!!!
Shocking, I know.
DeAnthony Thomas had cheap jerseys from china one target and scored a TD.
Travis Kelce had three targets and scored a TD.
Anthony Fasano and AJ Jenkins had a combined nine targets for a whopping 35 yards!!!!
In the words of the not so cheap jerseys immortal Herm Edwards……
“Hello???”
Since I’m clearly using this post as a means to vent my frustrations I’d also like to take a moment to point out what was probably the most impressive display of incompetence in the entire game, if not the history of Chiefs football (and that’s saying something).
Follow Suade @_Suade Chiefs need to cut Dee Ford RIGHT NOW. How you grown and run away cheap jerseys china from making a tackle??? 9:33 AM - 6 Oct 2014 64 64 Retweets 14 14 likes WHAT
WAS
THAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?
I think I’ve watched it on loop for like five minutes straight and I don’t no if I should laugh or cry?!?!
Dee Ford was either so scared of making a tackle that he literally turned around and ran away from the ball or he has the worst field awareness of any player in the history of football. It actually looked like a glitch in Madden when a player inexplicably just takes off and runs completely out of a play for no reason. I just…….I can’t……..(sigh).
Anyway, despite that horrific display of football by first round draft pick Dee Ford the defense as a whole did a pretty commendable job considering that they were playing a smash mouth football team without Derrick Johnson, Eric Berry, and Mike DeVito. Marcus Cooper continues to disappoint, but Sean Smith and Hussein Abdullah have been playing well and if KC can get Eric Berry back I think they’ll be okay. Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, Dontari Poe, and Allen Bailey continue to make life miserable for opposing QBs. I’ve also been pretty happy with Bob Sutton’s defensive calls after having some real doubts about him coming into the season. The Chiefs may be 2-3, but I don’t think you can put that on the defense, especially considering all the injuries that they’ve suffered.
I’m also pretty happy with how the young offensive line is coming together. Against a powerful 49ers defensive front the Chiefs OL didn’t allow a single sack and as was mentioned earlier rushed for 4.7 yards per carry against one of the best run defenses in football (they were only giving up 3.5 yards per carry coming into the game). No, this game wasn’t on the offensive line either.
This game was on Andy Reid (with a little Dave Toub thrown in for that 12 man on the field penalty). If Reid did a better job of putting his offense in a position to succeed the Chiefs might have walked away with a victory. That is what is so frustrating. I actually picked the 49ers to win this game in my FanSided Armchair Quarterback picks by a score of 23-20. So the loss doesn’t shock me, I knew that KC had their work cut out wholesale jerseys for them. If anything, I didn’t give KC enough credit. I thought it would take Andy Reid making good play calls to keep it that close. Instead Reid continually handcuffed his own team and they still were one drive away from getting the win.
I like Andy Reid. I believe he deserves the bulk of the credit for turning the 2-14 Chiefs into a team that can now play with anyone in the NFL. His game plan and play calling the previous two games were masterful, and as I said earlier, the first drive was a thing of beauty. He just HAS to learn to stop outthinking himself. The opposing team’s defense isn’t taking away KC’s best players, Andy Reid is. If the Chiefs can get “Good Andy” to run this team the rest of the way they can absolutely compete for a playoff spot. I 100% believe that. Overall, the team that has taken the field the past four weeks has shown the ability to beat anyone. Over those four games they have played three of the four teams that were in the conference championship games last season. They blew one of them out at home and in the other two they were one final TD drive away from pulling off an upset road win.
The Chiefs wholesale jerseys china now enter their bye week with the most difficult part of their schedule in the rear view mirror. They have to put the frustration of this loss behind them. Andy Reid has to see the error of his ways and get back to getting the ball to his best players. If the Chiefs can do that there should be a lot less frustrating games like the one on Sunday in their future.
Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to finish watching the Royals game and see if I can banish this frustration all together.
As always, thanks for reading and GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
