26 years ago today… I walked into O.J. Perrin Jewelers at 8 rue Royale in Paris. That afternoon I was on a mission to buy a Rolex. An everlasting memory made possible by my high school art teacher, who accompanied me on my quest - and ultimately paid for my new Rolex on her credit card. Another important person in this story is my mom, a single-parent, who scraped up the money so I could go on this class trip. But it was me who saved up for the watch, working practically full-time as a 16 year-old at a local grocery store. Times were different back then… I bought my Datejust Ref. 16200 for about $1900. Believe it or not, I had no particular model in mind. I was putty in the saleslady’s hands and my recollection is totally letting her choose the watch for me. Back then, no one carried a cellphone. I was lucky someone took an actual picture of me on that momentous day. Better than an unboxing video or wrist shot is this film photo of me, freshly-turned 17, in a Paris park flexing my prize. Today, as a 43 year-old husband and a dad, I especially reflect on why I was so dead set on getting a Rolex… One reason was wanting a watch I could wear the rest of my life. A companion through life’s ups and downs. An artifact that would tell a bit of the story of my life through its scratches and dings. A Rolex seemed the perfect choice. Today when I wear it, I’m wearing more than a Rolex… I’m wearing a symbol of who I really am… A kid that grew up in the ‘90s who still has goals to accomplish. This watch brings me back to reality and keeps me grounded - keeps my eyes on the big picture. I’ve been doing this THEN and NOW post for a long time. Since before our kids were born. I haven’t explained to them why dad pulls out a green sweater every April 21st. Someday I will. In the meantime, this watch will help me raise them (along with my wife!). This watch has played a pivotal role in their dad’s story and life. I wouldn’t be doing Ad Patina if it wasn’t for this watch. And the experience I’ve had running my little business is something I can’t wait to share with my kids. And of course, I can’t wait to share the story of buying my watch in Paris with them.
