Whisky: Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14

1/100 Days of Productivity | Feb 26 2021
I can manage to do one meaningfully productive thing per day (besides go to my job, which is a non-negotiable)! I mentioned the pomodoro method before and I did a few of those before I ran out of gas.
- Cleaned off my desk - Filed paperwork - Cleaned bedroom - Did two loads of laundry - Change closets with joyfriend  - Sort my clothes for things I wanted to keep - Went to witchcraft/hippie store, picked up some fidget items, new candles, wall tapestry - Paid two bills - Did a load of dishes - Put wall tapestry up after getting fasteners from hardware store - Did a tarot spread - Vacuumed bedroom, swept - Cooked dinner - Answered some student texts
Okay no wonder I’m so hecking tired! I’m proud of that list.  Currently Drinking: Glenmorangie 14 Years Quinta Ruban (on the rocks)

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 46% abv.
Glenmorangie were the first distillery to start extra maturation in different casks, something we now take for granted from finishes in Oloroso Sherry casks to red wine barriques. Back in the 1990’s Glenmorangie experimented with different wood finishes, one of the first released was a Port Pipe one. The Quinta Ruban is the evolution of that expression, matured for ten years in American white oak…

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban
Review by: TOModera Special thanks to EMoneySC2 for the excellent swap we did 3 months ago. This drams for you (as you supplied me with it). Went up north this past weekend, and was surrounded by a group of people all enjoying whisky (and rum, but that’s another subreddit). Specifically whiskies I brought to share. Because seriously, sharing whisky is pretty sweet. Up first was time to share…

Day two of the Kensington Wine Market whisky advent calendar has me reflecting on the first time I tried today’s offering, and many other things.
I first tried the Craigellachie, appropriately enough, at my most wonderful friends the Craig’s house. I was not blown away, but it was a very respectable Speyside single malt that was roundly appreciated by all those in attendance. Every time I see the Craigellachie now, I think of that.
But it occurred to me as I was pouring this bottle into my Glencairn that those sense memories are what my whisky drinking is really all about. True, I like the scents and the flavours, the seemingly endless options for new whiskies and new expressions of whiskies to try. But as someone who has a woefully poor memory, what I appreciate most are the individual memories tied to each of the 540 individual whiskies I’ve tried.
I and my close cadre of whisky pals will always remember where we tried the King Alexander III that resulted in the most spectacularly accurate/drunken tasting notes we’ve ever produced, or the disappointment we felt when the Chuckanut Bay bourbon proved much less glorious than its name. Every time I see a bottle of Opidan bourbon I’ll remember my dad pounding his sample at a tasting event at the Bushwakker and remarking, while the rest of the room was still nosing, that it smelled and tasted like the mustiness of a recently sawed-off cast. I’ll forever be in the armchair at my parent’s Arizona winter home when I think about the Glenmorangie Astar or the multitude of “sonically aged” bottom shelf tripe that turns up under a dozen different labels in the US.
I’ll never forget my brother’s bachelor party, the first time many of us experienced multiple fine Scotches, or the worst snowstorm that hit Regina in a decade or better in early 2010, when I spent the better part of a day sipping three quarters of a bottle of Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban and watching the snow fly, the cars struggle to cleave the soft, fresh powder on the roads, and the pedestrians meander at a snail’s pace to avoid losing purchase.
That’s the joy of these advents: the chance to redouble the joy experienced during the happiest time of the year by adding a new set of sense memories via brown liqour.
As for the Craigellachie? It’s good! Better than I remembered, in fact. My notes for that first try were pretty thin, but tonight it came alive in the glass. The nose was almost startlingly fragrant and elemental, all grassy and fruity, with red apple, peach, peanut, black tea, and burnt brown sugar all wafting from the glass. When it his the tongue it remains sweet, but not as fruity as the nose: a touch of apple skin and lemon pith, banana, and a hint of vanilla. Then comes a hot and spicy wave, bringing mint, hot pepper sting, pine nut, a touch of sherry spice and oak. There’s a signature funky, sulphurous, sour note that’s hard to place, but definitely identifiable for drinkers of the Dewar’s blends, of which Craigellachie is a big component. The finish is straight out the kitchen, with some salt and black pepper jumps out of a very long, lingering presence that keeps your lips and gums tingling the whole way along.
This is, in the vernacular of our time, both a treat and a snack. It definitely won’t be for everyone, but if you can find pleasure in it it will get stuck in your craw.

Dalmore Port Wood Reserve
Review by: The Muskox I’m glad Dalmore finally decided to release a somewhat higher-proof whisky, but I’m left with lots of questions. Why Doesn’t Dalmore already have an NAS port-finished whisky? Who is this whisky being marketed too? Why does it cost $25 more than Dalmore 12? Why does it cost $25 more than the age-stated and tasty Quinta Ruban? Why does it cost $40 more than Arran’s excellent…

[Discussion] Is Bourbon getting too expensive? via /r/whiskey
[Discussion] Is Bourbon getting too expensive?
I am 35 now, and only really began getting into Whiskey about 6 years ago. I had drank before of course, but mostly in cocktails or at my 21st when a friend split a 750ML of Evan Williams Green with me, and the 3 days of being physically ill that followed drinking such large amounts of whiskey over the course of the night which dragged on to 3am.
My first experience with sipping came when I bought a bottle of Glenmorangie Original after having some at a bar in 2014. From there I tried a Glenfiddich 12, Glenlivet 12, Lismore and Monkey Shoulder, and as a birthday present from my father-in-law I received a bottle of Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban. Out of these I still have the Quinta Ruban, about half full now, and I still keep Monkey Shoulder and sometimes Lismore stocked as I think they are good buys at the 30$ and 20$ price points I find them at. I have tried JW Red and Black, and have a bottle of one of their GoT releases, but to me it just tastes 95% like Red.
In 2015 I decided to try moving on to Bourbon because a lot of the scotch bottles I was enjoying were 40-60$ and I thought Bourbon might be cheaper for me. I began with some EW 1783 that I picked up for 12.99 and some Rebel Yell that I picked up for I believe around the same. They were both decent and I still enjoy 1783 when I can find it, though I recently moved to Illinois and the stores here never stock it. From there I got some EWSB that I have a few different vintages of by now and while I once could pick it up for 25$, it is now edging closer and closer to 35$. I use to be able to find Weller Reserve for 23$ and Antique for 30$. Now the reserve is 30+ and antique is very difficult to track down for me. I don't even find reserve good enough to warrant the cost anymore personally. I've had Eagle Rare which I got for 30$ which I am now seeing around 50, again not worth the price tag to me. I still have a bottle of Booker's Small batch that I really love, but I only drink it occasionally because of how expensive it is, and I recently was gifted some Blanton's Single Barrel and while I like it, it's impossible to find here and not worth 200$+. I can find EH Taylor SB here for 50$, and I still think thats likely worth the price, but it's slightly higher than I would like to spend on a daily and I'm not sure how long to expect it for this price when I see it going online for 100$ often. Things like Stagg JR and any of the nicer weller, or even ORVW10 is pretty much impossible to find in stores here, which is disappointing.
For Japanese I've only had Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt, which I did enjoy, but not enough to justify the 80$ price tag in my opinion. It doesn't compare to the Quinta Ruban I could get for 50$.
Irish I have only had Tullamore Dew and Jameson and the like, and I did find Tullamore to be a very decent bottle for 20$, but I liked Lismore or 1783 better at those price points and never really explored the ranges.
My most recent liking has been WFE 4 Year Rye, which I actually think might be in the top3 or at least top5 of things I have tried, and I can get it anytime for 60$ here, but I have yet to find anything comparable at a price I wouldn't mind drinking on a regular basis, and the rarer Rye seems super expensive.
What style do you think is the cheapest to really dive into, especially if you are wanting to obtain some of the older or rarer expressions? I typically am never willing to spend more than 100, and usually keep to 20-30 for daily and 40-60 for weekend selections. I have also been recommended to try Rum also, but my only experience thus far was some Appleton Estate 12, and it was so long ago that I don't even remember if I liked it.

-Glenmorangie The Quinta Ruban The Glenmorangie 14 Year Old Port Cask Finish has been matured in American White Oak ex-Bourbon barrels before being extra matured in specially selected Ruby port pipes from the Quintas, or wine estates, of Portugal. Extra maturation is a wood finishing technique pioneered at the Glenmorangie Distillery. Wood finishing in these port pipes develops Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban into a voluptuous spirit with a complex balance of sweet and dry flavors. 46% ABV (at Elite Wine & Spirits) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEFUZ5LpjYM/?igshid=47irjc7ryn6b
