Priyanka Chopra boards Oscar-nominated documentary To Kill A Tiger as executive producer

Priyanka Chopra Jonas has joined the Academy Award-nominated documentary feature To Kill A Tiger, as one of the executive producers. She joins a long list of producers, including Dev Patel, and Mindy Kaling, among others. This news comes after Netflix inked a deal for the documentary to be launched globally on the streaming platform.

As per Deadline, an official statement read, “Priyanka has stood as an unwavering advocate for the film since debuting at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022, captivated by its poignant narrative depicting a father’s valiant struggle within the judicial system to secure justice for his daughter.”

Among the several executive producers include Dr. Atul Gawande, the surgeon and bestselling author, Canadian poet Rupi Kaur, writer-producer Andy Cohen, Deepa Mehta, Anita Lee, Andrew Dragoumis, Shivani Rawat, Mona Sinha, Mala Gaonkar, Regina Scully, Anita Bhatia, Niraj Bhatia, and others.

Co-produced by Notice Pictures Inc. and the National Film Board of Canada, To Kill A Tiger is a story about Ranjit, a farmer in Jharkhand, India, who takes on the fight of his life when he demands justice for his 13-year-old daughter, the survivor of sexual assault. In India, where rape is reported every 20 minutes and conviction rates are less than 30 percent, Ranjit’s decision to support his daughter is virtually unheard of, and his journey is unprecedented.

Directed by Nisha Pahuja, the documentary feature has won several awards including Best Documentary at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the Amplify Voices Award at Toronto International Film Festival, and Best Feature Documentary at the Canadian Screen Awards. Nisha also won 2023 Excellence in Documentary Award from the Directors Guild of Canada.

Sonia Gandhi questioned by ED in National Herald case, Congress holds protests

Jul 21, 2022 17:52 IST New Delhi , July 21 (AF): Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's questioning by the Enforcement Directorate in the National Herald case has concluded for the day and she left the office of the central probe agency in central Delhi. The questioning went on for nearly two hours. Sonia Gandhi's daughter and party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accompanied her to the ED office. Party leader Rahul Gandhi also reached the ED office. Sources said Sonia Gandhi may be called again for questioning on July 25. Congress leaders protested in different parts of the country over ED summons to the party's interim chief. Seventy-five Congress MPs including Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and several workers were detained by the Delhi Police for demonstrations against the questioning of the party chief. Senior Congress leaders including P Chidambaram, Ajay Maken, Manickam Tagore, KC Venugopal, Adhir Ranjan Chaudhry, Shashi Tharoor, Sachin Pilot, and Harish Rawat. Ashok Gehlot, K Suresh were among those detained. Congress workers in Nagpur were also detained in the wake of the protest. The protest by the Congress turned violent in Bengaluru as the Youth Congress workers allegedly set a car on fire, in front of ED office. Congress workers also stopped a train and blocked railway tracks at New Delhi's Shivaji Bridge railway station. Chandigarh Police also used water cannons to disperse Congress workers and leaders as they protested over the questioning. Party leader Jairam Ramesh said party MPs and CWC Members have courted mass arrest outside the party's central office in a show of collective solidarity with Sonia Gandhi. Congress leaders accused the government of misusing the probe agencies to target political opponents. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who is also in Delhi, slammed the probe and said that since Sonia Gandhi is over 70 years old, ED should have gone to her residence if they wanted to question her. "It is happening for the first time in the country that they are stopping dharna, demonstration," he said. Party leader Sachin Pilot alleged misuse of agencies in the country. "It's our right to protest in a democracy, but it is also being crushed," he said. All MPs and leaders of Congress who were detained at New Police Line, Kingsway Camp were later released. Last month the ED questioned Rahul Gandhi for five days in the case. The ED had on June 1 summoned Sonia Gandhi to appear on June 8 in the case for the first time in connection with alleged money laundering in the National Herald case. Sonia Gandhi could not appear for questioning after testing positive and being hospitalised for Covid-19.The case to investigate alleged financial irregularities under the PMLA was registered about nine months ago after a trial court took cognisance of an Income Tax Department probe carried out on the basis of a private criminal complaint filed by a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Subramanian Swamy in 2013. The petitioner had approached the court alleging that the assets of Associated Journals Limited (AJL), which published the National Herald newspaper, were fraudulently acquired and transferred to Young Indian Pvt Limited (YIL), in which Sonia Gandhi and her son owned 38 per cent shares each. The YIL promoters include Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. Swamy had alleged that the Gandhis cheated and misappropriated funds, with YIL paying only Rs 50 lakh to obtain the right to recover Rs 90.25 crore that AJL owed to Congress. Congress argued that YIL is a not-for-profit company under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956 that can neither accumulate profits nor pay dividends to its shareholders. Calling it a case of political vendetta, senior Supreme Court advocate and Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi had said, "This is truly a very weird case -- an alleged money laundering case on which summons are issued with no money involved." The federal agency's move followed the questioning of senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress Treasurer Pawan Bansal in April this year in New Delhi. The National Herald is published by AJL and owned by YIL. Kharge is the CEO of YIL and Bansal is the Managing Director of AJL. Names Channi as CM to secure Sikh, Dalit votes

Eyeing Assembly elections in the crucial States of Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh (UP) in the next few months, the Congress on Sunday played a “surprise” Dalit card by naming Charanjit Singh Channi as the next Punjab Chief Minister.

Channi, the outgoing Technical Education Minister, is also one of those leaders who had rebelled against the party’s old warhorse Captain Amarinder Singh.

Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi congratulated Channi after he was picked as the next Punjab Chief Minister, and said the party must continue to fulfil the promises made to the people of the State. Rahul said “history had been created by the party after choosing a Dalit face” to head the Congress Government in Punjab.

The entire Congress leadership including party chief Sonia Gandhi, Rahul and his sister Priyanka Gandhi besides seniors like Harish Rawat, Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, Pawan Bansal, Ajay Maken and Randeep Surjewala, were involved in setting the Punjab unit in order.

Channi, 58, a three-time MLA from Rupnagar’s Chamkaur Sahib will be sworn in as Punjab’s first Dalit Chief Minister on Monday. His elevation is significant given the fact that Dalits form around 31 per cent of Punjab’s population. The Dalit population is in the same range in neighbouring States of UP and Uttarakhand.
