Some interesting facts to know before going on a private Rio Lagartos flamingo pink lakes tour
Stowed away in a paradisiacal corner of the Yucatan Peninsula are the shocking pink lakes in Mexico, officially called Las Coloradas. The captivating scene is famous for its cotton candy hued waters, pastel blue skies, and delicate white sand beaches. The lakes are an integral part of the Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, a safeguarded UNESCO Biosphere home to various intriguing and beautiful creatures. During a private Rio Lagartos flamingo Pink Lakes tour, it is possible to observe flamingos, crocodiles, jaguars, sea turtles, and various birds.
Reason for the pink color of the lake
Individuals wonder what makes the lakes so dynamically pink. First, the water and general climate are staggeringly salty, which draws in brine shrimp, plankton, and red-colored algae. Then, as the water evaporates in the glinting Mexican sunlight, these creatures become more concentrated and eventually make the famous radiant pink water!
What’s more, here is a pleasant reality to share: did you know that flamingos are pink since they eat the red-colored algae, plankton, and shrimp from the water? However, their feathers are ordinarily white!
Tumblr media
What is the use of the Pink Lakes?
Two principal businesses use the pink lakes: fishing and harvesting of sea salt. Sea salt harvesting is the greatest of the two businesses, with a piece of the lakes being private property that a salt processing plant possesses.
Strangely, sea salt harvesting in the pink lakes was initially started by old Mayans. They adored the region and used the profoundly important salt! It was significant for both safeguarding of food and dietary necessities. The Mayans would wisely mine the salt from the shallow tidal ponds brought about by floods in mangroves and afterward transport it by kayak to parts of the enormous Mayan empire.

What Is Possible to do at the Pink Lakes?
The pink pools of Las Coloradas are not bountiful in activity and experience like other touristic regions of the Yucatan Peninsula. You will not find amusement parks, ATV tours, or parasailing there.
However, the fantastic region embraces restrictiveness and serenity. The primary focus is respecting the romantic lakes, pleasant scenes, and untamed life. A little yet unspoiled beach region in the Las Coloradas town offers the best opportunity to pause for a moment and embrace the vibe.
The most famous visit in the space is the Rio Lagartos natural reserve boat tour. You will have the opportunity to notice the dazzling pink flamingos at home, encounter the white clay bath and cruise the Las Coloradas pink lakes!

MY TRAVEL EXPERIENCE: MEXICO
Seven months later, here I am, sharing my travel experience in Mexico with you!
This post is full of good tips that you would never think, good places where to eat delish food, the best places where to stay on the beach at reasonable price and must dos. Are you ready? :)
As many of you might know already I spent three weeks in Mexico in October and it has been the most amazing time ever! We were in Quintana Roo and we spent our time between Xpu-Ha, between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. We divided our holiday in super relaxing time, just chilling on the beach, eating a lot of food, reading under the sun and drinking Coronas and adventure time, when we visited everything we wanted to, from the ruins of Tulum to Chichen Itza, from doing zip lines in the jungle to swim in the cenotes.
If you go for 10 days or a month, this list includes everything you need to know to enjoy your holiday smoothly and experience most of the wonder this area has to offer.
Just one thing before to go on: we went to Mexico on off-season, so my experience could be really different from yours depending on which time you go!
The order of the list is random and not by importance, as every each one of this thing, places, adventures made this holiday unforgettable!
WHERE TO STAY
- El Secreto Xpu-Ha (Carretera Federal Chetumal Puerto Juarez Km 382Xpu Ha, Quintana Roo) – it’s the first place where we stayed and we loved it so much we made our stay longer and ended up here for 13 days! It’s a lovely cabana on the beach, I mean, literally 10 seconds from the water. It has two floors and we had the chance to stay in both. I warmly suggest the top floor as it’s more private and even though they’re quite similar, I liked it more.
It’s a small room but it has all the essential: a lovely bathroom with a perfectly working shower, a little kitchen where to make morning smoothies or cook your own dinner, a comfy enough bed and a really big, lovely terrace, where you can admire the incredible view on the ocean, do some yoga or playing some card at the table. The beach is this rare, clean, almost empty gem, with water so warm and clear you never want to get out! Seriously!
There are a few beach clubs and restaurants along this stretch, where you can take drinks, a good lunch or if you walk a bit further, a fancy dinner. I will talk about these places later in this post.
In short this place is the most wonderful cabana on the beach ever!!
We booked it through Airbnb but you can find it on their main website or on Booking.
- Ahau Tulum (Tulum, Quintana Roo) – wonderful, environmentally conscious resort on the beach. They have different cabanas, with different views, but the place is on the beach and trust me, it doesn’t matter too much which one you’ll choose because you’re in paradise and they treat you like a king, or a queen :)
The staff is truly incredible, the rooms are super clean and really cosy, they all have an hammock either inside the room or outside on the terrace. Their restaurant does delicious food, healthy, fresh and original and their list of juices is mouth-watering! On top of the restaurant they have a open studio with sea view were they’re doing daily yoga. Definitely worth it!
As a super plus, Ahau Tulum has a couple of dogs and a couple of cats wondering around. They’re friendly and safe and only downside is…you fall in love with them and then it’s hard to say goodbye! Especially to sweet-eyes Bandit!
We booked it through their website, but you can find them on Expedia and Booking as well.
WHERE TO EAT
- Hotel Esencia, is located 15 minutes walk on the beach from our first place in Xpu-Ha. It’s actually a beautiful hotel (it’s a Mr and Mrs Smith, which for me it’s always a guarantee!) but you can go there just to take some drinks and dinner. They’re menu is mostly seafood with some vegetarian options. The staff is lovely and they take good care of you. On plus you also have a band of mariachi to sing while you dine! We went twice here and I give it 5 stars!! Only one thing to bare in mind, it’s a bit expensive.
- Restaurare (vegan) – even if you’re not vegan you MUST try this restaurant. It serves the most original, incredibly tasty food that you can’t miss it. It’s located on the hotel road in Tulum, but as soon as you walk few steps and pass the stone bridge you’ll find yourself immerse in a jungly corner where you can taste some mushroom ceviche and lettuce tacos, away from the busy road.
- Posada Margherita – Italian restaurant so YES to this! J jokes a part this was one delicious dinner! Lots of seafood and pasta so good to make you melt! They also have a lovely entrance where you walk in the middle of a candle path and green plants.
- Ahau Tulum – if you’re not staying here, you have to come to eat though! As I was saying before they do really tasty and healthy dishes (that I often shared with Bandit ;))
- Ukami – it’s a sushi restaurant like you might have guessed from the name J a lot of choice of fresh and yummy rolls! And, you know, I’m always in the mood for good sushi!
- Mezzanine – this one and the place below are part of the same chain, Colibrí Hotel. They’re quite fancy and they each one of them has different cuisine. Mezzanine focuses on Thai cuisine and believe me, they’re doing the best dumplings and chicken sate I’ve ever eaten!
- La Zebra – We spent two days on the beach here and ate lunch. They’re doing authentic Mexican cooking that is so lush you wanna keep eating J my favourite was the tuna burger!
Just to remind you once again that it was off-season while I was there, so I didn’t have any trouble finding a table. But if you were going in high season I would recommend booking the restaurants with notice!
MUST DO’S
- Xplor Park – this is an adventure park in Playa del Carmen. It offers zip lines, driving through the jungle with amphibious vehicles, underground rafts, stalactite rivers and hammock splash. It’s one of the most fun things I’ve ever did! It takes one full day so I would suggest go there relatively early.
- Swim with the turtles in Akumal Beach - I absolutely LOVE turtles! They're such wonderful creatures and have had the chance to swim with them, filled my heart with joy! An experience I warmly suggest to do, but also be aware: this beach is quite touristy and crowded. You can't go swim by yourself but you need a guide - we found one there and even though we thought it was a scam at the beginning, we really appreciated having one. PLEASE, don't try to touch the turtles or to get too close to them. Observe them and let them enjoy their habitat without invading it too much!
- Chichen Itza - well I don't need to say too much here as it's one of the Wonders of the World and it truly is something wonderful to see and visit. Again I would suggest to take a guide, someone who can even come and pick you up at the hotel and bring you back, considering it's two hours drive from Tulum. The place is soaked with so much history and so many tales, it's gonna leave you with goosebumps!
- Tulum Ruins - another historical place worth to see for the stories it has to tell. The Mayan culture was something beyond incredible!
- Sian Ka’an Biosphere - on this day we got to see dolphins, turtles, alligators and many different species of birds. I don't want to sound repetitive but it was AMAZING! We booked our tour with Osprey and we booked the Punta Allen one. They do offer many different tours so just have a look at their website and choose the one that fits you more! You can find different companies but I highly recommend them as they are really prepared and incredible guides.
- Cenotes - these are natural sinkholes and it's incredibly refreshing and nice to swim in them. There are a lot all around so it's your choice because they're all worth it a visit! Remember to bring your snorkeling gear!
- Snorkeling and Relax on the beach - a must as I've never been on a better beach. The pink sand and the clear and warm water, the colours of the sky, really make you feel you're in heaven! :)
Just one tip, that I hope you'll not need ever: while I was snorkeling not far from the shore I put my foot down in what I thought it was a rock - nah ah - it was a scorpion fish! Now, not to be a drama queen but I consider myself lucky to be here to tell you this as this kind of fish is deadly poisonous!! Fortunately I barely touch it and moved away as quick as I could. Fortunately again, Simon saw it, realised what it was and knew what to do. It hurt like a mother-fu***r, sorry for the language. I wanted someone to cut my foot off. Just saying. What you need to do is to put your foot in water as hot as you can bare and take a pain-killer. A strong one! That's it! You can't do much. Obviously if your conditions are getting worst then hurry to the hospital! For me it lasted for about two hours and I avoided the hospital. It hurt for a couple of days after then it was like it was never happened. I think about it now and I like to remember myself like a strong warrior but the truth is that...well, THANK GOD TO SIMON, because without him I would have been lost.
 TIPS & WARNINGS
- go off-season - once again, we went in October and I'm so happy for that. It was still super warm, no rain, less humidity and, most importantly, less people! If you can, do go in low season!
- take probiotic - especially if you're a bit weak of stomach or not used to different cuisines I would recommend taking probiotic from a few weeks before the trip and while you're on holiday. It's a great help and you don't risk to spend a couple of days in bed.
- buy eco mosquito repellent THERE - Simon and me noticed that even if it's the same brand, the mosquito repellents that work best are the one bought on the place as it seems to be more specific for their type.
- pay in pesos - they can accept also dollars and we had some left as we were coming from Albuquerque but after a little while we noticed it was actually a rip off :-/ so try always to pay in pesos!
- don’t drink tap water - they're gonna tell you everywhere you go but do not drink tap water. Not even the probiotic could save you then.
- rent a car - we're used to always rent a car during our holiday and to be honest it's a real commodity to have your own vehicle. I wouldn't say it's absolutely necessary but from my point of view it's always best to have one!
- sun cream protection - let me play the part of the mum and tell you: the sun there is HOT! Protect your skin, preferably with a natural cream.
It’s rare that I feel to go back to the same place because I always think that there so much to see and explore that would be a waste. But I’m actually looking forward to go back to Mexico, stay again at the Ahau Tulum and also visit some more of the Yucatan as well.

3-Day Itinerary to Playa del Carmen
Mexico’s Yucatan offers stunning coastlines and Mayan ruins. While most holidaymakers spend their time in Cancun, they can also head a little further down the coast to Playa del Carmen and find some of the peninsula’s most stunning beaches without as many tourists. Also, unlike Cancun, these beaches are easily accessible and free.
Welcome to Playa del Carmen. A famous spot where every visitor takes a selfie.
Playa del Carmen is a perfect place for everyone, no matter what your budget is. From diving, jet skiing to parasailing and taking a Catamaran cruise – you will be amazed by the number and variety of activities here so if you’re bored of big cities like Cancun or Tulum, that’s the place you should head to next!
What to Expect from This Itinerary
This itinerary aims to give you an idea of how to get the most out of your trip to Playa del Carmen. Most tourists spend their time sitting in the resorts or lounging next to the beach. But there’s so much more to offer like countless Mayan ruins and other parts of the Mayan Riviera.
You’ll discover how to spend your time in Playa del Carmen and taking a day trip to visit Chichen Itza – one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Playa del Carmen sign.
How to Get to Playa del Carmen
The vast majority of visitors arrive at Cancun International Airport. Flights from around both North America and Europe arrive here. As soon as you step out of the airport, you’ll find a fleet of buses that go to Playa del Carmen every hour. The resort lies approximately 70 kilometers south of the airport and takes between one and two hours depending on traffic.
One of the ADO buses you can take to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.
Alternatively, consider hiring a private shuttle straight from the airport or taking a local bus from the ADO bus station in Cancun. This is what I did. The bus journey was very comfortable and it took 1 hour to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen. It was also very affordable – 42 Mexican pesos for 1 person.
Getting Around Playa del Carmen
The resort area is relatively small, and you can get from one place to the next on foot. But during the warmer months, temperatures regularly hit the 30s (°C) with high levels of humidity. If you don’t want to walk, taxis are available on every street. Just flag them down and they’ll take you to where you want to go. A single taxi ride shouldn’t cost you more than 50 Mexican pesos. If you want to visit some of the places further afield, join a tour. However, the best option is to rent a car in Playa del Carmen so that you enjoy true freedom.
Accommodation
If you want to spend your holiday in luxury, you’ll find dozens of resorts and vacation rentals here. However, if you are watching your spendings, Airbnb would be a great option for you. You can rent an entire apartment 5-minute walk from the beach for $USD10-$USD14 a night – a very affordable price with very decent living conditions.
My Airbnb apartment from the outside. The total cost for 2 people a night was $USD14.
Day 0: Arriving in Playa del Carmen
Depending on the time of your flight, you might have the afternoon free if you take a shuttle from Cancun to Playa del Carmen. If you’re arriving on a long-haul flight, we recommend that you take it easy on the first night. Grab something to eat and either relax around the pool or have an early night.
When in Playa del Carmen, don’t forget to try some local tacos!
Holidaymakers with more time can make their way to the beaches and soak up the paradise-like environment after a long day of traveling. You’ll find several bars lining the coastline for a cocktail or cold beer in the warm evening too.
Day 1: Relaxing on the beach and snorkeling
Day one is all about soaking up the paradise of Playa del Carmen. Start early (places are usually super busy after 10 am) and stroll along the beach after breakfast. Remember to take your camera to snap pictures of the picturesque landscapes.
Entrance to the beach – very impressive!
Activity 1: Enjoying Yucatan’s best beaches
Playa del Carmen has some of the best beaches along Mexico’s eastern coast. White sand curves around the gentle coastline. We suggest visiting two beaches: Playa Maroma and Xpu-Ha. Take a taxi and stroll along both savoring the views of the stunning beaches and the Caribbean Sea.
Activity 2: Snorkeling
After the morning on the beach, it’s time to experience the best of Playa del Carmen’s marine world. You can arrange a tour from either your hotel or one of the operators along the street. The boat will take you out to three or four spots with thriving marine life. Snorkeling trips usually last a few hours and offer a chance to experience the color and diversity beneath the waves.
Snorkeling can be a great experience!
Pro tip: It gets hot in the afternoon, and sunburn is inevitable without taking proper measures. Wear a t-shirt when you’re swimming and use waterproof sunscreen.
Day 2: Day Trip to Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza is the world’s most famous Mayan pyramid. Tours leave every day from Playa del Carmen to one of the Seven Wonders of the World. You’ll have to get up early as most tours leave the resort area in the early morning. First, you’ll drive two and half hours to the ruins and have a few hours inside. Grab a guide at Chichen Itza who can explain exactly why the pyramid is so important to both the ancient Maya and modern Yucatan.
World’s famous Chichen Itza.
Take note of the exquisite design of the main pyramid, and how each side is perfectly aligned with north, east, south, and west. Then you can visit the ancient ball court and learn about how the Maya played Pak ta Pok – an ancient game where the captain of the losing team was sacrificed.
Expect the day trip to start around 7.00 am and to arrive back in Playa del Carmen in the early evening. When you get home, grab a cold drink in one of the beachside bars to reflect on your trip.
Day 3: Day trip to Tulum
Tulum lies approximately one hour south of Playa del Carmen. The region has a reputation for beaches, Mayan ruins, and cenotes (a type of sinkhole where you can go for a swim). You have three options to visit Tulum: Rent a car and drive, ride in the colectivo (a Mexican minibus popular with locals) or join a tour.
Historical Tulum.
Each has its own advantages. Expect to spend a full day in the region. Start early and get there before the midday heat.
Three days in Playa del Carmen
I hope this itinerary has shown you how to get the most out of three days in Playa del Carmen. Enjoy the region’s beaches and go snorkeling. Take day trips to both Chichen Itza and Tulum.
Have you been to Playa del Carmen? If so, share your experience visiting it with us!

In the beautiful Yucatan Peninsula, it’s easy to kickback at an all-inclusive resort and let your life pass you by. However, you are absolutely doing a disservice to yourself if you DON’T go and explore the Yucatan Peninsula, local Mayan culture, and the authentic food scene. We were lucky enough to experience the incredible Mayan culture at our own pace with the help of Viajes Con Ciencia. With authentic off-the-beaten-path experiences available, touring with Viajes Con Ciencia gave us the opportunity to explore without the large groups and beyond just the tourist sites.
Our guide for the day was Adrian – the Viajes Con Ciencia owner – and lucky for us, he lived with the Mayan people for many years and even understands the language! It was such a privilege to have someone who deeply understood the Mayan culture, history, and uniqueness beyond just a superficial level.
Mayan Culture Tour
We experienced the Chichen Itza History & Food Tour during our Honeymoon in Mexico. This particular tour focused on Mayan culture, practices and science in the northern parts of the Yucatan Peninsula. Everything was included in our ticket price.
This included:
Semi-private mini bus for no more than 10 people
Ticket and tour of Chichen Itza
Entrance fees to a secret cenote
A homestay meal at a local Mayan family’s home
Description:
Enjoy the freedom that our small group tour of Chichen Itza offers. You will learn about the advanced sciences of the Mayan Civilization, as well as feel the vibrant and the rich culture found in the Yucatan Peninsula. You will visit this ancient Mayan Ceremonial Center, considered a World Heritage Site of Unesco, as well as enjoy a mayan food tour in the historical center of the colonial city of Valladolid. At the end of the day, you will discover one of the most beautiful and secluded cenotes in Yucatan, truly one the highlights of the day. All of this while being joined by our expert in Yucatecan History and Mayan Anthropology.
  Our Experience
We were picked up by Adrian at our hotel just after 7:30. There were 9 of us on the trip and we were meeting at central locations to beat the large tour buses that would inevitably chase us along the highway later on in the day. The idea behind the early start to the day was the fact that it was going to take us 2 hours to drive to Chichen Itza and then we wanted to beat the large tour groups to have fewer crowds.
Our tour group was filled with predominantly French speakers, but that wasn’t an issue because Adrian can move between 3 languages effortlessly. It was quite a fun experience to practice our French with our new friends and to share common experiences and travel stories. There are multiple languages offered by Viajes Con Ciencia so there’s no problem with accommodating specific language requirements.
The Drive
Before heading out on the road, Adrian purchased coffees and snacks for the group (included) and then we piled into the mini-bus towards our first destination. Along the way, we were guided through local Mayan towns with architecture that was older than America itself! We listened to different stories, myths and historical explications about the Yucatan Peninsula and its inhabitants. This was a great opportunity for me to ask if ‘the aliens took the Mayans back to space?’ 😂(No).
As we were in a comfortable mini-bus, the ride was smooth and effortless. There was air conditioning and places to charge our phones! On our tour, we had an older woman who had a bit of a mobility issue so Adrian made sure she always had the front seat and opportunities to sit along the way. Most of the locations were accommodating to differently-abled guests, but the Cenote did have a few stairs.
Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza is the jewel of the Yucatan Peninsula and for good reason. Everything is so perfectly preserved, you almost FEEL like you can picture the Mayans playing a ball game for glory under the blazing sun.  When we arrived, we were immediately confronted with vendors selling hats. There is A LOT of open space at Chichen Itza so you definitely want to buy a hat. If you’re tempted by the vendors, I would spend no more than $200 pesos per hat (or $10 USD) and that is still very expensive!! Our poor French friends paid $600 pesos for two hats before we could hurry them away from the vendors.
Fortunately for us, Adrian brought us all reusable water bottles and a big jug of water that he would refill with ice. It was the perfect icy treat in bewteen locations to look forward to.
Chichen Itza is a large space with scattered ruins all around. The main attraction is the Kukulcan Temple and this is in the dead center of the park. This is where the majority of the tourist groups go first so be sure to get your Instagram shots in early!  You will be there early enough to do so without too many people. Over by the ‘Mil Columnas’ there will be loads of vendors that you can pick-up souvenirs from. They are actually very friendly so don’t be afraid to engage.
After a guided tour, we were able to explore on our own for a bit before returning back to the car for some snacks and ice-cold water.
Secret Cenote
Whilst we were in Tulum, we went to the Gran Cenote – which is just 5 minutes outside of the main city area. Even though we got there 10 minutes before opening time, we were STILL not the first ones there. Not even close. It was a bit chaotic so the ‘secret cenote’ that Adrian took us too was such a MAGICAL experience in comparison since there was virtually no one there.
The ‘secret cenote’ was not-so-secret as it is a privately owned tourist location, but there’s a lot of controls around who can come in and how many people can come. You won’t find any large tourist buses here! When we drove in, our entrance fee was covered already and we were able to change into our bathing suits in a private changing area that was beautiful and obviously recently built. Then we walked down to a cave on a decently paved path (with stairs!) and we emerged into the most beautiful cave I’ve ever seen. The cave was obviously paved to be accessed easier, but the cenote itself was stunning and 100% natural. There were stalactites coming down from the ceiling and the cenote was over 60 meters deep!! There were only small fish and some medium-sized catfish in the water so no worries there.
Before getting into the cenote water, you’re expected to shower and clean your body and hair of any unnatural oils and contents that could disturb the purity of the cenote water. This is VERY important!! Please don’t prioritize your Instagram photos/make-up over the preservation of this amazing natural space! You’re also required to wear a life jacket whenever you’re in the cenote soooo there goes any sexy water shots 😂
Homestay Mayan Meal
Last on our agenda, we had our homestay Mayan culture and food experience. We were able to join a traditional Mayan family in their home for a full meal. In the past, this family had been cooks for the major resorts, but now they’ve decided to bring tourists into their own home to do traditional Mayan cooking experiences. It was such an amazing experience to watch how this food is made and to learn more about what makes well-known meals (like Tacos!) different in this region. We were able to go outside as well to see their outdoor, underground fire pit where they would slow cook pork and other meat dishes.
Our meal included:
Multiple fresh-made agua frescas (or fruit/tea waters)
Multiple types of meat dishes
Spicy vegetable options
Fresh corn tortillas
Dynamic salsas
Small toppings
I chose to tip the wonderful family for their hospitality $200 pesos because money like this goes a long way. Viajes Con Ciencia of course pays this family a respectable wage for their hospitality, but money like this often goes to household bills or special services for the children in the house instead of just running costs for the business. I got to speak with the young girls in the house and I wanted to support their education and future directly.
Conclusion
Viajes Con Ciencia is the ideal way to support the local Mayan culture and community in the Yucatan Peninsula! By spending money in their communities versus paying a big travel company, you are directly impacting the area in a positive way. Not only was the tour well-planned, organized and informative, I just LOVED Adrian’s ethos as well. We talked about traveling, our personal lives, and what we hoped to accomplish with our businesses on a really intimate level. It was so refreshing just to get to know another person beyond just the formal operator-customer level. These are the types of personalized experiences that I’ve come to love and expect from Mexico. It’s the place with ZERO bad food and amazing, friendly people.
Tulum, Mexico: Mayan Culture & Food Tour Through Yucatan Peninsula In the beautiful Yucatan Peninsula, it's easy to kickback at an all-inclusive resort and let your life pass you by.

Cambodia, Siem Reap and Angor Wat et al
Right, so I am trying to remember where I left off!! I know I was in HCMC at the time!! Found out I was actually staying near a couple of really nice bars, but just before I left….doh!! Also, finished up having some great seafood on seafood street – which is where all locals go – with a load of expats through Carter (who’s a friend of a friend).
Had a really simple flight up to Siem Reap – although on one of those planes that still has propellors…but it made it in one piece. Even though I easily in lowest 10% in terms of age for travellers on the flight. Which was a nice change. Assume everyone else was on the long haul buses I’ll be using to make my way back to Vietnam eventually.
Siem Reap itself is interesting. It has clearly grown to cater for the vast numbers of tourists pouring into this part of Cambodia for Angor Wat. The food remains great, the beer ridiculously cheap, and there is something of a laid back vibe still. It is a mix of western tourists, Chinese tourists, young and old. With a fair smattering of the rest of the world thrown in for good measure. It is also hot. But then again HCMC was hot. So not massive news really.
I am not sure if the tourist industry is destroying local culture, or just enabling businesses and people to take advantage of the cash flowing in from us. But for less than £20 a night for current hotel, and one round the corner I move to on Monday at around £15 per night. It doesn’t necessarily feel part of a backpacker culture, or that could be because I am staying in good hotels, and also not been out late yet, or that that side of Siem Reap is slowly being pushed out by busloads of tourists, pizza restaurants and even South East Asia’s best Mexican restaurant….self declared. Also only one I’ve seen though in the 3 cities I’ve been in so far.
I’ve decided to stay up here for an extra few days and ditch the Cambodian coast. Which, whilst recommended to me be by a couple of people, the most up to date reviews and speaking to a couple of people out here, is being heavily redeveloped and is thus full of construction and chaos at the moment. So decided to give it a miss. Instead staying another full week, partly to break back of final MBA module, but also to relax whilst doing it. Then bus down to Phnom Penh the capital for a few days, then bus back down for HCMC for a couple of days, before the tour for 14 days up the coast to Hanoi.
Angor Wat and surrounding area
It turns out I am actually quite ignorant of both Cambodian modern history, as well as the history associated with its greatest tourist attraction, the temple and city complex of Angor Wat. I have obviously, being me, read up a bit on this now. But I was lucky that the private guide I booked knows his stuff. The extra investment has been worth it, if exhausting, as there is so much to actually see – even over 3 days – and the heat is gruelling. Vanny though has been great.
He not only seems to know a hell of a lot, but he has steered us clear of main tourists times and at times areas. He also, I think, is a keen photographer, as is constantly insisting I take photos, as well as photos of me, and pointing out the best shots. Again, I actually think he knows his stuff. I am now drowning in great photos.
The first thing to really say about Angor Wat, is that is isn’t one thing. It is actually the remains of the temples, mainly, from a medieval city that actually probably numbered 1,000,000 people. This was at the height of the Khmer Empire, and saw the building of all the main temples between the 10th and 12th century. The temples are a real mix of Buddhism and Hinduism, which seemed to alternate as the main religion (it is now a branch of Buddhism). This in itself I find fascinating. As one of them essentially isn’t a religion as most people would understand it, with Buddhism not having a god or all powerful being. Whilst Hinduism has, for want of a better word, a whole pantheon of gods that have grown over 1,000’s of years. I am still not clear how the two mix together, but most temples seem to try – although those still in use are predominantly Buddhist.  It has made me want to discover more about the Hindu stories associated with their religion, as Vanny has told me many, and they are delightful if confusing. But also very clever, and often hold an inner meaning. There are also a lot of similarities with Greek myths, which I’d love to understand more about, or if just coincidence.
I also love the fact that in the “west” we talk about Angor Wat being discovered….when in fact there had been people living continuously in the area since they got abandoned at religious centres in the 14th and 15th century. So, a lot of people knew they were there. Just we didn’t!!
I have lost track of how many temples I have now seen.
Obviously the glorious and huge Angor Wat itself. Which actually looks “normal” size, until you are in it. And then it is properly huge. The construction is a rival to anything I’ve seen, with stone blocks perfectly fitted together in a mammoth construction project. The friezes along all sides are as impressive as anything the Greeks or the Romans created, and are longer than football field in length of intricate stone carving. something I cannot get my head around how they actually achieved it over such a huge span. Sadly both sunset and sunrise were somewhat undermined by clouds, but personally, besides getting up stupidly early today, I am not feeling too gutted about that – as seen some amazing sites.
Angor Thom, which was the centre of the old capital. Has a brutal beauty, with its towers of the 4 faces of Brahma. Originally 39 towers, representing the 39 nine provinces of the empire, not all still stand. But it is still an impressive sight, with every turn you take you are faced with more and more incredibly large and thoughtful looking faces. This is where the merging of faiths is interesting, as they are clearly Buddhist faces BUT on a Hindu god.
The host of smaller, and when I say smaller, they are often still massive, has shown such a variety of imagery and architecture that it has been fascinating. And again Vanny, has been a great guide.
All this does make me wonder though, as to are people, including me, just visiting sites because we feel we should. Don’t get me wrong, this place is up there with Chichen Itza, Jerusalem, Rome and the Pyramids. But I wonder whether we are all chasing something that we have lost. I am not sure what it is we have lost. But am I any different from those who jump out of planes or bungee jump for their thrills, but I am trying to “thrill” myself in a different way. I do wonder how so many western and developed countries, particularly those that are more capitalist, have such high incidents of mental health issues, suicide and unhappiness (however the experts measure that).
I certainly have no answers to the questions I am asking right now – and I’ve spent a lot of time reading and studying this stuff over the years. It is just interesting on these travels to see the intermingling of cultures, and to reflect on what it is, if anything, that I may be missing or searching for. And whether that missing or searching for is because of the culture and society I have grown up in, or if it is more basic than that. Or if I need to be searching at all. One of the most interesting parts of having a bit of time to just sit and do nothing, is to watch everyone else chasing and doing stuff.
I’m not great at meeting new people and not sure I need or want to, and am generally quite happy at the moment with my Kindle, so I find it interesting to sit and watch the rest of the world interact around me. So many people are always dashing places, as if this is their last moment to do something. Rather than literally, sitting and smelling the roses. Not saying I always find that easy. But I have the slight luxury of situation and personality that I am having to do that.
