Extendable Awnings: So Easy, You May Not Even Notice They’re There in Melbourne
You’ve probably seen extendable awnings in Melbourne on the side of buildings but what are they exactly? Extendable awnings protect from the sun, rain, and even snow. They are also known as retractable awnings and they can be created out of wood, aluminium, or vinyl. If your window has several panes, you may have to get creative with how you open the awning. If you have not yet invested in this type of awning for your property, you must!
The awning blinds in Melbourne can be created so that they lay in a flat position and then simply slide out to create shade. When you’re done enjoying the sun, retract the awning and they will slide back in place neatly. With this type of retractable shade system, you’ll never have to worry about getting your sliding doors damaged by an awning that is left out on the patio all year long. Here are some reasons why you should reconsider.
They are very affordable: An extendable awning typically costs under two hundred dollars to purchase and install. In comparison, other methods of weather protection such as traditional window coverings or roof coverings often cost more per square foot than an extendable awning.
They provide a privacy shield: This particular awning is designed to fit over windows to provide complete privacy. If you have customers who dislike the sun or are elderly and need extra protection from the elements, this style of awning provides that perfect solution.
They are very portable: So long as you possess the proper equipment, this type of awning will easily fit in your vehicle cabin. This makes it possible for any business owner to install and remove their new extension on short notice.
If you enjoy spending time on the porches or patios it is time to think about installing extendable awnings right away!

Wu Cloud - Pulsa Rimba - another stellar Fourth World album; stare into the distance and get lost in these gently-moving soundscapes (Slow Music Movement)
Back in the days when isolation was just for hermits & convicted psychopathic criminals, Wu Cloud was ahead of the game, waved goodbye to his life in Melbourne &, with the intention of recording his debut album, boarded a flight to Sumatra for some Wu time. With just some factor 50 sun cream, an iPad, Korg Monotron space delay & duo, an Electroharmonix 720 Loop pedal, a Zoom h2n portable recorder & a locally brought Angklung he started experimenting.
On his aimless travels he would park his moped & wander into dense, wildlife rich jungle at sunrise or sunset, hunker down becoming one with his surroundings & record the noise of nature's rich tapestry. An alien language, lush jungle, bustling markets, rainbow coloured birds, traffic chaos, unfeasibly large insects & chance encounters all became sound sources & inspiration. At night he learnt the ways of his new stripped down, rucksack friendly studio. Tweaking, testing, experimenting until overcome by tiredness or palm liquor.
With his minimal equipment freeing him from computer based production dogma & the tyranny of choice he developed a new, free flowing music production style based on instinct & feel rather than painstaking programming & over thinking. No app notifications, dishes to wash, work commitments or fixed itinerary fuelled his imagination & allowed his mind to tune into the vibrations of this volcanic island, its ancient flora, myriad fauna & human life force.
‘Studio’ locations included an old writing desk in a bamboo hut, a hammock over the water, bumpy bus rides in Kerinci National Park, a stark, tiled cabin on stilts beside a raging river and numerous balmy, noisy city hotel dens with fluoro lights, ceiling fans and buzzing mosquitos in places called Kerinci, Jambi, Padang, Sungai Penuh, Medan, Bukit Lawang, Kersik Tuo, Aceh, Pulau Weh, Nias, Sorake, Iboih, Long Beach and Sumur Tiga.
Five weeks later, relaxed, wiser & newly self schooled in minimal music production, Wu returned to civilisation with 16 hours of  loops, jams, jungle noises & recordings of Indonesian life. Back in the studio, making sure to retain the improvised & naturally occurring essence of his recordings, he did some light trimming & fading to produce what you hear before you.
Hit play on this carefree, solar powered, hammock friendly, psychedelic suite of electronic exotica and let your mind wander like Wu.

Wiercinski Studio creates portable home from pair of shipping containers
Polish practice Wiercinski Studio has converted two shipping containers into a portable house, which is currently located in a garden next to the Szelągowski National Park in Poznań.
The clients, described by Poznań-based Wiercinski Studio as "a couple of brave people interested in searching for difficult to adapt spaces", wanted a structure that would serve as both a home and office that could be relocated.
Called Portable Cabin, the dwelling was created by connecting two shipping containers along their long edges to create a 12.5 metre long, nine metre wide space.
Portable Cabin by Wiercinski Studio was constructed using shipping containers
"The implementation of a portable cabin and remote workplace turned out to be a great response to the present times," said the studio.
"The great advantage of this facility is its mobility," it continued.
"The house ceases to be a property tied to a specific space, but it can change its location along with the changes accompanying the life of the owners."
It is comprised of a number of stacked shipping containers
Portable Cabin was placed on top of another pair of containers that are being used for garden storage. All four containers were painted in a matching olive green to "camouflage" them from the park.
Apart from this green paint, the exterior of the shipping containers has been left as-found, "to show the sincerity of the raw construction material," said the practice.
Due to the sloping site, the upper pair of containers have been shifted slightly northwards, creating a 25-square-metre roof terrace looking out over a nearby river on the roof of the lower containers.
Two shipping containers were adjoined to each other
The cabin, which was insulated with spray foam before being lined with birch plywood panels, was constructed in an off-site production hall and then transported to the site.
Keeping the internal finishes minimal enabled the creation of 2.6 metre-high ceilings, disguising the central join of the two container frames.
Read:
Studio Edwards uses shipping containers to create getaway on Australia's Great Ocean Road
An external steel and wood staircase leads up into the interior, which is organised with a bedroom to the north and an open plan living, dining and workspace to the south, with a bathroom between.
Wooden planks line the floors of the interior, which features simple furniture and light fittings around a metal fitted kitchen. On the sides of the containers, a series of small, mid-level windows are positioned to allow for a variety of interior layouts.
The interior was clad with wood
At the southern end of the containers, the doors have been replaced with large areas of glazing, incorporating a door leading onto the decked terrace which is wrapped by a curved metal balustrade.
In future, the clients plan to relocate Portable Cabin into the nearby forest, and eventually make it possible for the structure to be installed above water.
The shipping container doors were replaced with large glass windows
For more examples of shipping container architecture see Dezeen's recent round-up, which includes a stadium in Qatar made using 974 containers and a floating student residence by BIG made using a ring of nine containers.
Also included in the roundup are a trio of shipping containers that were converted into a weekend retreat set on stilts by Melbourne practice Studio Edwards and TOOP Architectuur's mirrored architects' studio.
The photography is by ONI studio.

9th December 2017
We allowed ourselves to wake up when we wanted. I mean, we had to be out by 1000 at the latest otherwise we would be charged, but we're always up way before then anyway. It was chilly at night and we did use the duvet. It was amazing. There's nothing quite like wrapping yourself up warm in a duvet at night.
Today, we were on the move to the Gold Coast. I've heard amazing things about this place so I was stupidly excited about it. I imagined it to be one of my favourite places. I was hoping it would live up to the name. It was only an hour and a half drive so we planned for the day.
I saw online that there was a deal for Dream World tickets. They were doing entry into the theme park, the water park and the sky point observation deck for $79 each. That's an absolute bargain in my mind. The observation deck itself was $20 each. I bought the tickets online as Steve was driving.
We arrived in Surfers Paradise around 1200 and my smile was from ear to ear. It looked amazing. It was a city but also a holiday destination. There were sky scrapers everywhere as well as palm trees. The sun was out and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. We were driving round for a long time trying to find a parking space. We drove along the coast looking at the beach. It was a massive stretch of white sand and crystallised water. There were surfers everywhere. It was Australia's version of Miami.
We found a car park that we weren't sure we'd fit in. There was a limit bar above us and I was so worried we'd hit it. We were obviously miles off and we did get in without losing the roof. It was an expensive one but what else could we do? Every space along the beach front was full and you're always limited to time. I had a coin bag which is what I had collected them for, silly things like parking. I had a good $200 in coins so we were set for the trip.
We walked through the centre to get to the beach front. There were shops after shops. It reminded me of our favourite place in NSW – Manly. It had that relaxed vibe. People were there for the beach and that was it. Swimwear and surfboards.
We walked along the beach and I started to get hungry. I had packed our extra pizza and half of mine from last nights dinner into sandwich bags. We didn't eat the garlic bread either. We sat on the beach watching the waves as we ate. I was so content.
We decided to go up the sky deck as we were right next to it and it was on our to-do list. We had our tickets, sort of anyway. I purchased them and a confirmation email had come through. The email stated that 'this is not your ticket, they will come through in a separate email'. That separate email never came through. I rang them up and asked what was going on as I was waiting to use them. They said that as it was the weekend, the tickets wouldn't be through until Monday. We were meant to be leaving on Monday so they better had think of something fast! They said that if we just show the confirmation email, we will be allowed entry. Let's find out.
We walked to the deck and waited in line. I went up to the person and explained. She seemed very unsure and had to speak with her manager. They allowed us in which was good. I would've been very upset if we couldn't.
We waited outside the lift and the door opened. We had to go up 88 floors. We stood inside and the lift moves so fast. I looked at the ceiling and there was a camera showing what it looked like from inside the lift shaft. It was incredible how fast we were actually going up. My ears kept popping.
After about 30 seconds of going up, the doors opened. We walked out and the room was a 360 degrees circle with glass walls. It's probably my Dad's worst nightmare. We walked up to the glass wall and looked out – it was unreal. We did the sky deck in Melbourne but there's something pretty spectacular about seeing a beach go for absolute miles. It was really quite the picture. I was so happy and taking pictures like there was no tomorrow. Steve walked off and went to the bar.
I found two seats next to the window and sat down. The views were just incredible. I couldn't get over it. You have the most beautiful city to your left, with skyscrapers and palm trees, rivers, lakes. You then have the longest stretch of golden sand separating the ocean from everything. It was quite the picture.
Steve came over with a beer for himself and a glass of wine for me. It wasn't too expensive so we thought, why not treat ourselves? We sat there for a good 20 minutes chatting away, admiring the view.
Once we were finished with our drinks, we continued to walk around the perimeter of the room. It was a huge room, obviously with a bar. A lot of people were having their Afternoon Tea. The views continued to not disappoint. We decided to leave after we were finished and waited for the lift. First on the Gold Coast to do list – done!
We left the skydeck and walked along the beach front. Steve saw an advert for Mini Golf so we were walking towards there. It wasn't until I Googled to find out it was $30 each to play, that we decided against it.
Funnily enough, the weather started to make a turn for the worst. The winds picked up and the skies turned dark. We walked back to the car as quickly as possible. I was getting really quite, how do I put this? The only word I can really use is shitty (sorry Dad). I was quite clearly knackered and I really needed a nap, according to Steve. I was just being very snappy and sarcastic, argumentative. You know, the average.
We drove to our campground which was a cheaper one. We decided to go cheap and then tomorrow, we will go expensive. Maybe.
I had found one on our camping app that was only a 20 minute drive out of the city. It was $25 for unpowered but there was showers, kitchen, hot water, and free laundry.
The rain was really coming down when we eventually pulled up. It was a lady who obviously had way too much land so she 'rented' it out. I guess a lot of Australian's have a lot of land though, look at the size of their country!
She lived in a forest although it wasn't a scary one. It was a large area with a lot of ground and trees on the outside with some dotted within.
We passed her little house where we had to stop to give her the money. It was chucking it down so it was a run to and from the car. She told us that we could stay on the gravel area which is what we wanted. We didn't want to get stuck in the mud, again!
We pulled up, emptied the bed and I was told to have a nap. He was being fair to be honest, I really was tired. I struggled getting off to sleep because I was over tired. It was getting later and darker and we really needed to get dinner going. Plus, Steve has to sit there in the bed as it's raining.
It started to stop so we got out, got the table and chairs out to make dinner. We had decided on cooking veg as we felt so unhealthy. We bought some veg earlier on in Coles. The plan was to fry them in seasoning and have cashews with them. We got the table out and it had to go behind the van so that the boot door would block the rain from us should it start again.
Steve chopped all the veg and I stirred. How exciting! I love our little portable gas stove. It's amazing. I wish we had them at home, especially when you're entertaining. One flick and it's on! I am so easily pleased though. They've probably been around since the dinosaurs...
Our dinner turned out to be amazing. It was so nice to finally have something which was boarder-line healthy (minus the nuts and oil they were cooked in). We had enough veg left over to do the same dinner again another time.
As we were finished, the rain started ever so lightly. I didn't think that we had particularly long before the heavens opened again so I rushed all the stuff over to the kitchen to get it washed.
There was a little camp group staying at the same place. I guessed that they often stayed as it was loads of kids and a few adults. The kids had little cabins to stay in with bunk beds. They all had dinner together and dessert. Some of the aboriginal said to me that they were doing a performance with the didgeridoo later on should Steve and I want to come over and watch. I would've loved too but I probably would be asleep the moment my head touches the pillow.
I went back over and Steve had put the chairs and table away to stop it getting ruined in the rain. We jumped into the back and the rain got heavier. How irritating.
We had another car pulled up next to us – a slightly bigger version of ours. A high top. Steve was desperate to get a high top but that wasn't in our budget. I love our little van and I wouldn't change it for the world.
We played some cards before getting off to sleep. Or, well, at least tried. The camp group didn't end up playing the didgeridoo as I heard them ask if they could play hide and seek instead. Sounds great but it was pitch black outside and one of the kids went, “Let's hide under their van!”. Erm, how about no?! Don't go anywhere near my van.
They didn't, or so I didn't think they did. We fell asleep after about 15 minutes of listening to them running around, shouting and what not. You can't get annoyed, you just have to remember what it was like being that age, especially with nothing around you to keep you entertained.

Mecca Brands’ New Normal – WWD
https://pmcwwd.files.wordpress.com/2020/05/mecca-highpoint_8_crop-lres.jpg?w=640&h=415&crop=1
Temperature checks for customers and plastic visors for retail staff are among new safety protocols adopted by Australian beauty retailer Mecca Brands as it reopens its 109 stores following COVID-19 shutdowns.
As the U.S. and Europe start the long process of reopening a blueprint for what high-touch beauty retail looks like, the new normal is emerging in Australia, where the government was able to curb the spread of the virus relatively quickly.
Mecca commenced a staggered opening of stores on April 24, roughly four and five weeks after closing its 97 Australian and 12 New Zealand stores, respectively, standing down all 4,000 staff, who were paid a fortnight’s company-subsidized COVID-19 leave. A Call & Collect service for those unwilling to come into store also launched April 24.
At presstime, over two-thirds of stores had reopened, with the remainder due to follow over the coming weeks. In-store services, starting with brows, will recommence on June 1.
Mecca’s customers are returning to a markedly different in-store experience.
Observing not only government-mandated COVID-19 safety measures for the beauty sector, which include keeping attendance records for all customers, staff and contractors, the company also canvassed independent advice from Don Campbell, professor of medicine at Monash University, and has capped a maximum occupancy in store to one person for every six square meters.
Armed with contactless digital thermometers, Mecca retail team members — whose own temperatures are checked prior to every shift -— take customers’ temperatures before they enter each store. The company reserves the right to deny entry to anyone with a temperature exceeding 37.4º Celsius.
A customer at the recently reopened Mecca Highpoint store in Melbourne has her temperature checked by a retail team member in a full-face plastic visor, part of Mecca Brands’ new COVID-19 safety plan.
Hand-sanitizer units are stationed at the front of store, point of sale and throughout the floor; a beauty “concierge” is assigned to escort every customer throughout the store, and there is a no-touch service policy.
Makeup stations are placed 1.5 meters apart, with product testing done strictly by team members only, deploying Mecca’s new “SSS” policy — sanitize, sample, sanitize. Products are transferred using single-use applicators and sanitized makeup trays. All transactions are contactless.
Other retail team staff, dubbed “Hygiene Heroes,” roam stores throughout the day to clean and re-clean all surfaces, including back of house.
“We said to Professor Campbell, ‘What are the greatest [safety] measures that we can take?’ and he gave us a list and we committed to undertaking all of them” said Mecca Brands chief executive officer Jo Horgan. “There was a lot of debate internally about temperature checks for customers early on. But we thought well, you know, what do we feel that customers would desire, faced with this environment? So we’ll go with temperature checks.”
Campbell’s recommendations also included the use of face shields, similar to those used by health-care workers.
After an initial order of 1,000 custom-made shields, Mecca is currently trialing them in six Australian stores, with a view, said Horgan, to rolling them out as part of its standard uniform. An additional 20,000 shields are on order.
In New Zealand, where the population is five million, only staff performing in-store services will wear face shields. The country has registered 1,154 cases of the virus and 21 deaths. Australia, with a population of 25 million, has registered 7,114 cases and 102 deaths.
A Mecca Brands retail team member in full-face shield serves a customer at the Mecca Highpoint store in Melbourne.
Lockdowns precipitated a record 17.9 percent retail sales decline in Australia in April, about 5.4 billion Australian dollars or $3.5 billion at current exchange, according to preliminary Australian Bureau of Statistics figures.
“Strong” online sales made up 10 percent of the month’s 24.7 billion Australian dollars, compared to around 7 percent in March, according to the ABS. Australian bank Westpac reports online sales grew 20 percent in April.
Horgan declined to discuss her online figures, other than saying the division “punched above its weight” during the store shutdowns, launching a flurry of initiatives to supercharge its digital efforts.
Virtual services, where customers make a booking for a virtual appointment via mecca.com.au, were fast-tracked and launched on March 27, three days before the Australian stores shuttered.
Free of charge and lasting anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes, the concept sees customers connect via FaceTime to a retail team member located inside a Mecca store, who walks and talks them through the products. During the shutdowns, 12 closed stores — which Horgan calls “light, dark stores” — were designated for the purpose.
“We had the capacity for 1,500 [virtual] services a week and we had an extraordinary response” said Horgan. “So many customers said, ‘This is my new normal for when I want a service.’”
Virtual hosting — where customers chat live to a team member in a nearby store in real time via a pop-up chat box on mecca.com.au — launched on May 12.
Both initiatives have driven “significant” business according to Horgan.
To meet online demand, the company’s 15,000-square-meter distribution center near Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport pivoted to a 24/7 basis, with all deliveries switched to priority shipping. The company split staff into teams and staggered start times, mandating gloves and temperature checks for all staff, contractors and delivery drivers. Hot water was plumbed in to accompany the installation of portable toilets and demountable lunch cabins, to ensure staff segregation, with the regular kitchens closed and cleaning upped.
As for Mecca’s ISO beauty sales, while the color category has been challenging, according to Horgan, the company has seen an “extraordinary” shift to skin care during COVID-19, with the hair category “going through the roof” and upticks in body, home fragrance and candles, she said.
The Mecca TV studio, located in Richmond, Victoria, which was set up at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis.
To drive engagement, the digital team tripled its content output during COVID-19, launching a new mecca.com.au microsite called Mecca Live as a content hub, as well as a new initiative called Mecca TV, complete with its own professional-look TV studio that was set up near the company’s support center in Richmond, Victoria.
The latter has served as an in-house education channel, broadcasting interviews and advice to all 4,000 team members on a weekly basis, and a live broadcast studio which has seen brand founder interviews and panel discussions livestreamed to Mecca’s social media audience on Instagram and Facebook. A new Facebook community group called Mecca Chit Chat and Mecca TikTok were also launched.
Weekly visits to the mecca.com.au grew 400 percent during the crisis, with visitors spending 30 percent more time on the web site, the company reports.
Horgan declined to speculate on the hit COVID-19 would take from Mecca’s fiscal 2020 sales. To qualify for the federal government’s six-month wage subsidy scheme JobKeeper, however — in which Horgan confirmed Mecca Brands is participating — businesses with a less than 1 billion Australian dollar or $653 million turnover must demonstrate a reduction in revenue of at least 30 percent over a minimum one-month period since March 1.
Last August, IBISWorld reported Mecca Brands owned 10.6 percent of the 4.4 billion Australian dollar, or $3 billion at average August exchange Australian specialty beauty market — excluding supermarkets, department stores and pure play online beauty retail, with anticipated calendar 2019 revenues of 455 million Australian dollars, or $310 million, up 11 percent year-on-year and five times the industry average of 2.2 percent. Industry sources suggest the company’s 2019 calendar sales could have been as much as 43 percent higher.
“I think that the fact that Mecca is an Australian, private, agile company, has helped us pivot super quickly — we’ve had to adapt and we have,” said Horgan of the coronavirus crisis.
“Like everybody, in April, when we were hardest hit, we were scrambling to pivot and react to the new market conditions and when you close 109 stores obviously there’s a significant impact from that. As we’re coming to May and we’re opening stores and we have online performing very well, we feel that we can see a road to recovery that wasn’t immediately evident when this all started.”
