04.25.17 At the Bohemian National Hall on 73rd street, The Orchestra of the S.E.M. Ensemble, founded, directed and conducted Petr Kotik, presented a marathon program which combined composers from the AACM – Muhal Richard Abrams, George Lewis, and Roscoe Mitchell – with those associated with the New York avant-garde tradition – Christian Wolff, Petr Kotik, Jackson Mac Low, and Czech composer Petr Bakla.
Highlights included George Lewis’ Emergent (2014) with Claire Chase (flute) in 4-channel sound, Roscoe Mitchell’s Distant Radio Transmission (2017) and Petr Bakla’s world premiere of Major Thirds (2017). The evening concluded with George Lewis’ Seismologic (2017) for treated bassoon, performed by Dana Jessen in 4-channel sound, followed by group improvisation with Roscoe Mitchell, George Lewis, James Ilgenfritz, Tom Chui and others.
