My Indian adventure

An once in a lifetime opportunity. As you may have seen, I have done a couple of projects surrounding my experience in India, this is because this truly was the most amazing 2 weeks of my life! As I was studying for my GCSE’s and debating whether to stay on at school for sixth form, I had heard about a new project that had been set up, which saw a select group of sixth form students given the opportunity to take part in The Gerry Martin Project, a social and ecological program set up to enhance the lives of underprivileged children. On day I was approached by a teacher, getting into conversation, he asked me if I would consider taking part in the next trip. My immediate reaction was no, thank you, its not for me. This was because never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be possible due to my disability. Then later that day, me and my 2 one-to-ones were having a heart to heart chat and I said I would love to do something like the India trip, but how would it be possible? They both said if I really wanted to go, they would go with me. So there it was, the seed planted, maybe something that seemed so impossible would be possible after all.

With the school and my carers on board, the next obstacle was getting my mum to agree. I knew this wasn’t going to be easy. At first, mum was adamant that I wasn’t going, but after attending meetings to discuss the trip. Me and my dad finally persuaded her to let me go. In order to go on the trip, I had to raise £1800. I started with small fund raising events such as raffles. Whilst the raffles did raise a good amount, and with time running out I decided to do a mammoth 5 mile walk in my walking frame, starting at Sandown Castle in Deal, and finishing 2.45 hours later back at my school in Sandwich, having gone through 2 pairs of trainers and 2 flasks of pasta.

So, the big day had arrived, bright and early on 28th March 20114, we arrived at school to catch a coach to set off for Heathrow, everyone was very tearful, except from me. As the coach pulled away, I saw my mum, dad and nan was an emotional wreck waving me of, I waved back whilst grinning from ear to ear. After grabbing a full English at the airport, it was time to board our Air India flight bound for New Delhi. Sitting on the plane waiting to take off was a feeling like no other, a real sense of this is finally happening. Touching down on Indian soil 9.5 hours later, although it was the early hours, 3AM to be exact, the warm humid air hit me like a hot powerful hairdryer. we just had time for a few hours kip, not that I got much being in a strange environment, before having the opportunity to explore a bright, vibrant traditional Indian market. Later that evening it was time to board the overnight train and embark on the gruelling 13 hour journey to Nagpur. This journey was the worst aspect of the trip for me as it was so uncomfortable, I remember first boarding the train. Looking around and feeling an overwhelming sense of doom that I had to spend the next 13 hours in such poor conditions, top and tailing with my carer on a bunk and having a hole in the floor as a toilet. After arguably the least restful night of my life with one particular woman keep staring at me the whole night, we finally arrived in Nagpur where jeeps and taxis were waiting to take us to the Pench National Park, our base for the next 10 days. This is where the real hard work started as the main objective of this trip was to renovate a run down school in a rural village. Every morning, we were up and ready to go to work by 7 AM, we would work until about 10 AM, then a group would return in the afternoon, this was because we had to avoid working during the hottest part of the day. We fitted a bio-gas exchange system to enable the staff and children to cook safely and efficiently, redecorated the kitchen and pantry, which I painted the lower part of the wall, and I repainted the climbing frame that the previous group built the year before. During our time at Pench we had the opportunity to go on two safaris in the hope of spotting a wiled tiger. The first was a early morning one, while we saw lots of wildlife such as geckos ,we failed to spot a tiger. The second one was an evening safari, although we saw more beautiful wiled life, and wit minutes before the park closed, the chances of seeing a tiger were growing smaller and smaller, then as we approached the exit, we hit the jackpot and spotted a majestic tiger in all it’s glory. With our time at Pench up, it was time to head back to Delhi, because the train was so uncomfortable, I as allowed to fly back while the rest if the group got the train. Our last few days were spent by exploring more traditional markets and gardens, getting blessed in a temple before attending a party to celebrate an truly unforgettable experience.

Pench Tiger Reserve, designated after the pristine Pench River, is nestled in the Madhya Pradesh districts of Chhindwara and Seoni, which adjoin the state of Maharashtra.

The Pench River runs directly through the park's heart. It runs north to south, separating the reserve into proportionate eastern and western halves. Since it was designated as a tiger reserve later in 1992, the area is now often known as Pench National Park.

Pench Tiger Reserve is both Madhya Pradesh's and Maharashtra's pride. Because of its unusual location, it has been accessible from both states since entry gates open. The park houses not only wildlife but also mankind. Ten communities surround the park, with one inside Fulzari and the other nine on the outskirts.
