“Even as terrible as the secretive machinations of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power might have been as its leaders went about forcefully acquiring land and water rights, it turns out that even the dramatized accounts are missing some of the worst of the evil doing, a result of the habitual partiality with which we tell history on this continent. By which I mean that the standard accounts of the theft of water from the Owens River Valley are typically told with a focus on the White landowners in the area, who at the time were close descendants of or even possibly homesteaders themselves, and thereby the agents of displacement for the Paiute and Shoshone, who had been managing the use of the Owens River long before the LADWP ever showed up on the scene. Just take a quick skim of that Wikipedia article that I linked on the ‘water wars,’ and you’ll see what I mean; the Paiute get a mention but then just sort of quietly disappear from the story.”
New piece up at Unsettling looking at the erasure in common tellings of the story of the California water wars, and new Land Back efforts in the Owens River Valley and Eastern Sierra, also known as Payahuunadü.

Payahuunadü translates to ‘The land of flowing water’, but the word has a much deeper meaning as you dig into the history of the Owens Valley. Before tubing trips, fly fishing, 19th century settler’s and Mulholland’s theft of local water, a The Nüümü (Owens Valley Paiute) flourished in this paradise. As time passes, I've become more conscious of the people that acted as stewards of these fertile lands for millennia. Clues of their presence can be found everywhere as my footsteps lead me past village sites, to old grinding stones, obsidian chippings, and possibly sacred spots long forgotten. It has forced me to spend more time learning about the history of this place as I discover new things for myself. Please take a brief moment to visit http://www.oviwc.org/owens-valley/ Or do a little research on your own into the history of the indigenous people and water politics in the Owens Valley. #owensvalley #owensriver #sierranevada #Payahuunadü #Nüümü #paiute #sierraclub #walkingwater (at Bishop, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0RUX8iBPQz/?igshid=1q8j791t5mye3

Press release from the Conglomerate Mesa Coalition dated July 30, 2021 (https://friendsoftheinyo.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/7-30-21-PRESS-RELEASE_-CONGLOMERATE-MESA-SCOPING-BEGINS.pdf):
BISHOP, CA — Today, the Bureau of Land Management announced the opening of the public comment period for the proposed mining project at Conglomerate Mesa, located on traditional homelands of the Paiute-Shoshone and Timbisha Shoshone and about one mile from California’s Death Valley National Park. K2 Gold’s proposal will impact at least 12 acres of Conglomerate Mesa. The company proposes to drill 1,000 feet down at seven locations to collect samples for gold analysis and to develop nearly three miles of new roads. Mining and drilling in the region would permanently destroy cultural resources and traditional cultural use sites, as well as threaten water supplies, wildlife and plants, and recreation.
The public comment period will last 30 days and the general public is encouraged to submit comments on the controversial project before the August 30th deadline. Comments can be submitted via the Bureau of Land Management’s website (click “participate now”). Following this initial scoping period, the Bureau of Land Management will review public comments and issue a draft Environmental Assessment. The general public will also be able to submit comments on this draft EA in the later summer.
“Conglomerate Mesa is a sacred landscape to the Indigenous people of this area. We have protected and cared for these lands since the dawn of time," said Kathy Bancroft, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, Lone Pine Paiute Shoshone. “Not only is this landscape a place of traditional pinyon nut gatherings, but it is also a transition zone between the Timbisha Shoshone and Paiute Shoshone traditional homelands. We have an obligation to protect the homelands we have and stand in opposition to this project every step of the way. We hope the people will stand with us and make public comments. Now is the time to make your voice heard.”
Conglomerate Mesa is used by tribes native to Payahuunadü/Owens Valley and Death Valley/Timbisha. The drill sites at Conglomerate Mesa are located among pinyon nut gathering sites, hunting grounds, mule deer migration routes, potential burial sites, and numerous individual artifacts.
K2 Gold and Mojave Precious Metals, a Canadian company leading the exploratory drilling project, is also threatening rare desert plants and the region’s scenic beauty. Rare species include the Inyo rock daisy, and the Badger Flat threadplant - a species new to science. Mature and juvenile Joshua trees, currently a candidate species under the California Endangered Species Act, occur along K2 Gold’s proposed road at Conglomerate Mesa and would likely be impacted by road construction. The Inyo rock daisy is local to the Inyo Mountains and found nowhere else in the world and the core of its distribution is centered on Conglomerate Mesa.
Phase 1 of K2 Gold’s exploration is complete. Following exploration, K2 Gold aims to sell the rights to another company to develop an industrial-scale, cyanide heap leach gold mine in Conglomerate Mesa. Cyanide heap leach mining uses cyanide to extract gold from the earth and poses significant hazards to local residents, plants and animals. Further, cyanide leach mining is very water intensive and uses hundreds of millions of gallons of water. K2 Gold recently admitted it does not know where water supplies for this project will come from. Advocates assert that there is not enough water available in the area for an industrial mine.
“Allowing a large mining project to proceed here at Conglomerate Mesa will devastate the natural environment, threaten endangered desert species, harm wildlife and their migration corridors and further stress scarce water supplies in Inyo County,” said Wendy Schneider, Executive Director, Friends of the Inyo. “The region’s cultural significance, beauty, and unique plants and wildlife are beloved by local communities and it's our collective responsibility to make sure all of it remains intact for future generations.”

Harry Williams was born in 1956, exactly one hundred years after a U.S. government surveyor named A.W. Von Schmidt peppered his maps with clusters of marks indicating "fields of fine grass," with "first rate soils." At the time, Von Schmidt was unaware that he was recording ancient irrigation networks built by the Paiute tribes to cultivate massive, wild-tended botanical fields throughout the valley.
Pre-contact, Northern Paiute irrigators supported one of the densest Indigenous populations in the region by engineering seeps and marshlands to cultivate native grasses, lilies, rye, sunflower, pigweed and dozens of other edible species. Their vast gardens also supported robust communities of deer, antelope, jackrabbit, native birds and fish. Endemic brine flies, gathered by the hundred-bushelful from Owens Lake, provided critical subsistence foods for the winter.
....Today, 70% of L.A.’s water is sourced from the Owens Valley, through the annual export of hundreds of thousands of acre-feet of water. In contrast, the three Paiute tribes in the valley are allocated 8,000 acre-feet per year: a little over 3% of the original water volume their ancestors managed on behalf of all life in Payahuunadü.
As the original irrigators of Owens Valley, the Paiute should hold first users rights, a status accorded by California law to the original water users in a given area. The 1908 US Supreme Court Winters Doctrine also ruled that Congress must reserve sufficient water for any reservation created by federal law. Yet due to California’s arcane water regulations and inconsistent application of federal law, the tribes continue to struggle for groundwater, riparian water and Indian Reserved water rights.
a tribute to Bishop Paiute elder and water protector Harry Williams, who passed away last month.

This International Women’s Day Back to the Future 34 Anniversary shirt . We’re sharing the stories of 12 incredible women and women’s organizations who are changing the world. We’re proud to say they’re a part of thecommunity, and celebrate their diligence and vision to work towards a brighter future. Free the Girls collects new or gently used bras and then ships them internationally to organizations in Mozambique, El Salvador, and Costa Rica that are on the ground working with formerly trafficked women. These women use this inventory of bras to sell these bras in local markets and launch their business. This unique model provides a safe and sustainable living wage while they rebuild their lives. They created their Brave + Bold tees to help raise money to purchase more inventory for these survivors of sex trafficking. Back to the Future 34 Anniversary Unisex Jolie Varela is a citizen of the Nüümü and Yokut Nations Back to the Future 34 Anniversary shirt . She was raised in Payahuunadü on the Bishop Indian Reservation. This area has terribly high rates of sexual abuse and suicide, and Jolie is a survivor. She started to connect to her homelands, using hiking as a channel, in her 20’s. Hiking helped to heal her from the inside out, and now she has created Indigenous Women Hike to help other women connect to the land and heal, both mentally and spiritually, just like her. The t-shirts her community creates helps them remember the journeys they take together. Kristina Filler lost her father to gun violence when she was 14. In the wake of the Parkland shooting and the March For Our Lives movement, she designed her Hold Your Fire shirt in the hopes of sharing a message of peace. She’s spoken at rallies, hosted events, and even created a workout guide inspiring others to join her in her mission. Gabby Frost created the Buddy Project in 2013 with the vision of preventing suicide by pairing people as buddies and raising awareness of mental health issues. They believe that no one deserves to feel alone and everyone deserves to have a supportive friend in their lives. Since the start of this project 6 years ago, over 220,000 people have signed up for a buddy. She’s created a line of encouraging t-shirts with messages such as “You have a purpose on this planet” and “Kindness Matters”.
