Former presidential candidate and pro-democracy Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere has died. According to his family, Ssemogerere, who had been ill for some time, died at his home in the Rubaka section of Kampala at around 4am on Friday. His age is 90. John Baptist Kawanga, the younger brother of the former Democratic Party (DP) leader, said on Friday morning that around 10pm on Thursday, Ssemogerere's condition worsened and his doctor was called and left after examining him. “However, he remained unsteady throughout the night until Friday morning when he returned from his bath and went to bed.

Born on February 11, 1932 in Kalangala District, Buganda Region of Uganda, Paul Kawanga Semokerere served as the President of the Democratic Party of Uganda for 25 years until his retirement in 2005. Ssemogerere was born on February 11, 1932 in Uganda. He completed his high school education at St. Henry's College, Kitwe. Political life - Paul Ssemogerere Ssemogerere was elected to represent North Mengo Constituency in the Ugandan Assembly in 1961–1962, then the National Assembly of Uganda. He served as Parliamentary Secretary to Benedicto Kiwanuga before becoming leader of the Democratic Party in 1972. Ssemogerere went into exile after the coup in 1971 and did not return until 1979 when he was appointed Minister of Labour. Paul Ssemogerere became the leader of the Democratic Party in 1980. In 1984, Okeny Atwoma was defeated in his re-election bid as a leader. In response to Adwoma's unsuccessful challenge, Okeni Adwoma founded the Nationalist Liberal Party with former minister Anthony Ochaya, Cuthbert Joseph Obwanger and Francis Pwenge. Ssemogerere ran for president in the contested 1980 general elections, which Milton Obote's Uganda People's Congress eventually won. From 1981 to 1985, Ssemogerere served as the Legislative Leader of the Opposition. In Tito Okello's administration, he was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs (1985-86). home Minister Ssemogerere served as Minister of Internal Affairs (1986-88Foreign Affairs (1988-94), and Public Service (1994-95) in Yoweri Museveni's National Resistance Movement administration after the January 1986 coup that made him president.
