“This isn’t how it works with most people, y’know,” Clay is saying from somewhere to his right. Apollo can barely hear him through the pillow he’s pulled across his face, held firmly in place under the pressure of both his forearms. He can taste laundry detergent and cotton in the back of his throat and it’s getting hard to breathe, but neither of those inconveniences seem quite inconvenient enough to make him move.

He’d been laying there for nearly twenty minutes now, ever since he burst into the apartment, looked Clay dead in the face where he sat on the beat up old couch and practically shouted, “Oh god, I’m in love with him,” before collapsing into a heap on his bed.

It wasn’t very dignified, but neither was realizing, quite abruptly, that you were in love with a man who was not only your courtroom rival and beyond ‘out of your league’, but one who held the hearts of nearly every teenage girl in the country in the palm of his hands. Because, of course, he was also a famous rock star. And dazzlingly handsome even on days where his only public appearance came in the form of leaving his apartment to walk his dog. Apparently, Apollo was no better than one of his fans and, frankly, it wasn’t fair.

They had been at lunch at the diner near the courthouse, grabbing a quick bite after an early end to Apollo’s trial. There was nothing romantic about it; the diner was old and familiar, all cracking vinyl booths and old laminate flooring. Klavier had ordered tuna salad; definitely not the kind of food you ordered on a date. After the usual arguments in regards to payment- Apollo had lost to Klavier’s quickly procured credit card yet again- they’d settled into their usual spot to eat. It was all very normal, almost routine, until Apollo made some off-handed comment about the judge’s behavior that day and Klavier had laughed. Not the laugh he gave in the courtroom, where Apollo could almost see the hours of rehearsal that had gone into the slight shaking of his shoulders and the perfect flip of his perfect hair, but a surprised exhale that nearly had him choking on the water he’d been attempting to drink. Apollo watched him sputter, laughing a little himself at how ridiculous Klavier looked, and thought, I can’t believe I love this idiot.

It had taken about five seconds for the reality of that statement to sink in, for Apollo to realize that, yes, he had actually thought that and, yes, he’d definitely meant it too. It was one of those odd moments of clarity, where he looked at Prosecutor Gavin across the chipping surface of the booth and suddenly everything that he’d ever done up until now and would ever do in the future seemed to make perfect sense. He was Apollo Justice, a twenty-four-year-old and practically broke defense attorney, and he was in love with Klavier Gavin. The Klavier Gavin.

Great.

So then he’d stared at Klavier for the better part of a minute, trying to sort through the revelation while the other dabbed at the edges of his mouth with the paper diner napkin, until his blue eyes widened slightly in concern over whatever expression had been painted across Apollo’s face and asked, “Herr Forehead, you would tell me if there was something on my face, ja?”

And without thinking, Apollo had stood, ignoring the sound of Klavier’s confused questions behind him, and left the diner altogether.

To his credit, Clay had taken his outburst surprisingly well. Apollo had only heard him move once in the entire time he’d been splayed on the bed, about ten minutes ago when he made his way across the room to place his fingers against Apollo’s wrist, presumably to check for a pulse. Satisfied with Apollo’s awkward, under the pillow flailing as a sign of life, he’d returned to the couch with a fanfare of creaking springs, quietly waiting out Apollo’s occasional groans of mortification with a previously unseen display of patience.

But asking Clay to stay quiet on the subject of Apollo’s embarrassment forever would be too much to ask, of course.

“Like, you get that, right? That the two of you are the biggest idiots on the planet when it comes to this sort of thing?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Apollo asks, but it comes out more like a muffled and indignant wmmm aah uupooo uh meemmm, and he can hear the sound of Clay’s snorted laugh drifting through the cheap polyester filling over his ears.

“It’s just-” Clay continues eventually, sounding like it’s ridiculous that he even needs to explain this to Apollo, “-most people ask the person they like out before they fall in love with them. You know, go on dates, get to know them somewhere other than over the corpse of your most recent murder victim.”

Apollo only wished Clay was being dramatic.

“I didn’t mean love love,” he replies. Uh dinnnt meem WUB wub. His bracelet gives a sudden and painful squeeze in response to that one; so much for lying to himself.

“Yes, you did,” Clay corrects, and Apollo can hear what sounds like the page of a magazine turning. “Take your head out of that pillow, I can’t have a conversation with you when you’re like this. It’s getting pathetic.”

And even though spending the rest of the evening yelling out his frustrations into the cotton pillowcase sounds preferable to talking about his feelings with anyone, best-friends included, Apollo does what he’s told.

Instantly, light floods his vision, blinding him just as effectively as the pillow had. He runs the back of his hand across the bridge of his nose, willing his eyes to focus on Clay’s form across the room. It still takes longer than he’d like it to, ten seconds of squinting awkwardly while Clay badly stifles a laugh. The first thing he sees when his eyes adjust is Clay’s grinning face, a blurry halo of light from the floor lamp behind him glaring off his dark hair. He looks like he’s having way too much fun at Apollo’s expense, but really, who can blame him? And why is Apollo’s life suddenly playing out like a bad soap opera these days, anyway?

“Dude, your hair looks great,” he says, “Hang on, let me snap a pic.”

Clay drops the magazine in his hand quickly enough that the pages flutter as they tumble to the couch while Clay reaches for his phone. Apollo’s glances at it when it lands and Prosecutor Gavin’s face stares back at him from the glossy front cover, winking in that particular way he has that makes Apollo roll his eyes in extreme annoyance but also maybe start sweating a little at the same time.

He groans, and nearly shoves his head back under the pillow. “Where did you even get that?”

“It was on your desk, you pervert.” Clay replies, waggling his eyebrows in a manner which suggests he knows exactly why Apollo was in possession of a magazine with a full Gavinners spread. It’s all Apollo can do to scowl in a vain attempt to cover up his embarrassment. Trucy must have brought it last time she stopped by. He would probably have thrown it in the trash if he’d known, saved himself from the continued tailspin this day was spiraling into. “Stop freaking and just ask him out. He’s going to say yes,”

“How would you know? You haven’t even met him.”

“And whose fault is that?” Clay returns, throwing an accusatory look that, while Apollo knows is playful, still makes him duck his head sheepishly before Clay can continue, “I know because I already asked him.”

Apollo freezes, blood instantly draining from his face. “You did what?”

“And he said yes,” Clay shrugs as if he doesn’t see the color of Apollo’s face rapidly changing from too pale to bright, flushing red. “You should really get a better phone, you know. Who doesn’t have a touchscreen? It’s 2027.”

“He what?!?”

And this time, Apollo really is yelling, loud enough that Clay gives an exaggerated wince and someone next door bangs angrily on the wall.

Only Clay’s years of astronaut training and excellent reflexes save him from the pillow that Apollo lobs in the direction of his head, then. He ducks with just barely enough time to get out of the way while Apollo darts for the red flip phone sitting on the cushion beside him. His eyes go wide with horror when he opens it to find the text app still open, a conversation he most certainly didn’t have on his own with Klavier Gavin staring right back into his face.

It reads like this:

Sorry about earlier, can I buy you dinner to make up for it?

There is a several minute gap between Clay’s text and Klavier’s subsequent reply. The thought of Klavier standing there, blinking gently in confusion at Clay’s antics while he attempted to compose a reply makes Apollo squirm almost as much as the actual response that follows.

Over dinner at the sushi place he likes downtown? At around 8.

“Who even texts like that?” Clay is saying while Apollo stares at the phone in continued, obvious distress, “Is he like that all the time?”

“My life is over,” is all Apollo can manage in response, mumbled quietly even as his heart pounds and his mind races with possible exit strategies. He could go to the dinner, tell Klavier all about how space training has addled Clay’s mind and made it impossible for him to grasp the particular details of reality. But it seems odd that Apollo would never have mentioned that when they’d talked about Clay in the past. He could pretend to be sick and spend the rest of the evening huddled back under the pillow now lying useless in the middle of the floor between the two of them, too, but it seemed just as likely that Klavier would invite himself over in concern as it was that he would believe that excuse. Maybe Mr. Wright would loan him enough money that he could buy a plane ticket? Abandon his name and traitorous phone and set up his own office somewhere far away like New Jersey. He isn’t licensed to practice law there, sure, but taking the bar again seemed somehow easier than facing Klavier at dinner after this.

“Man, hanging out with Gavin has really made you a drama queen, you know that?” Clay says suddenly, dragging Apollo from an internal debate of what exactly he would need to pack and if he could manage a quick goodbye to Trucy before he left town.

He frowns deeply in Clay’s direction.

“I’m serious. He likes you,” Clay explains, exasperation clear in the way he gestures with both hands toward Apollo’s phone, “Why else would he care enough to know how you text or what restaurants you like?”

“You know those things,” Apollo points out.

“Yeah, and I love you, you dummy.” Clay laughs. “Maybe not the same way Gavin does, but my point still stands. So call him.”

The screen of his phone is open to Klavier’s contact information, the ten digits of his phone number glaring back at Apollo in stark and simple text. Apollo stares at it for a long minute, willing the butterflies in his stomach to stop dancing long enough that he can think.

Part of Apollo knows that Clay is right. Klavier had given him the number months ago, scribbled on the back of his expensive looking business card in dark purple pen that had struck Apollo as entirely unprofessional at the time. He’d winked when he handed it over, sending Trucy into a fit of giggles at his side, and said something about using it ‘for urgent case matters- or if you get lonely, ja?’ And Apollo had flushed, narrowly resisting the urge to throw the card straight into the prosecutor’s trash can.

It had taken Apollo nearly a month to run into a dilemma large enough that he’d been able to justify the call as ‘urgent’. He hadn’t expected Klavier to sound so surprised at the sound of his voice or so eager to assist him in untangling the red tape that surrounded a particular record he was hoping to obtain from the prosecutor’s office. He hadn’t been expecting the text messages that started to find their way into his inbox, either; sometimes professional in nature, but more often than not small quips or a series of bad puns that had Apollo chuckling lightly despite himself.

He’d become used to those texts, to waking up in the morning to discover whatever thoughts Klavier had been musing on after Apollo had fallen asleep the night before, just like he was used to their banter across the courtroom and their now-routine lunches during recesses. So while the idea of facing Klavier now that he’d realized his feelings seems difficult beyond Apollo’s imagination, even considering those little conversations coming to an end because of his inability to act seems all at once unbearable.

Apollo exhales loudly, pointedly ignoring the double thumbs up and the mouthed ‘you’re fine!’ Clay sends in his direction as he backs out of the room and into the hallway outside Apollo’s apartment. Without Clay to cheer him on, the open phone in his hands seems even more daunting, like a bomb that just might explode if it isn’t handled just right, but eventually, he pushes send. He balances the phone between his ear and shoulder so he can reach for the bangle around his wrist, turning it in his hand with an anxious energy that seems to grow exponentially with each ring.

But, eventually, the line connects and Klavier’s voice, warm with affection and amusement, filters through to Apollo.

“Hallo, Forehead,” he says, “You certainly have some interesting friends, ja?”

And Apollo can’t help but smile.
