Perfume Families and Fragrance Reviews
We sometimes hear about fragrances being viewed as aquatic, oriental, woody, floral or fougere, but those who have gotten into perfumes just lately may not understand what all these terms refer to. By watching or reading fragrance reviews it is possible to learn everything about perfume families. For instance, one may find out the strong points and the downsides of each perfume family. One of the primary things men and women discover in https://bestperfumesfor.com is the fact that aquatic fragrances are light and airy, which is mostly because of the citrus and ozonic notes. Such scents remind people of sunny beaches and vacation, so that it comes to no real surprise that most aquatic perfumes are suggested for summer. Green fragrances, however, work the very best in spring, but they may also be used in summer.
Tumblr media
Oriental and woody fragrances tend to be heavy, fact that makes them more adequate for your colder months. As stated in many fragrance reviews, these specific types of perfumes can cut through the cold, meaning they have some considerable projection. Heavy perfumes can also known to feature better longevity, as opposed to the aquatic fragrances, which will do not last greater than 6 to 8 hours. As far as floral perfumes go, a lot of people might think that these are marketed towards women. However, there are several perfume reviews out there about famous colognes which include such notes as geranium, carnation, iris and even rose. In the end, the perfume that one wears is really a matter of personal preference, but fragrance reviews show us that floral perfumes for guys are not really a niche, but actually a place that enjoys a lot of popularity. Fragrance reviews explain that certain perfume individuals are made for specific seasons, however some scents turn out to be so versatile that they'll be worn all year long. The application method is also important, as too much perfume could come out cloying in any season, no matter its notes. After getting to know the idea about perfume classification, many people will certainly become more curious about the fragrances. One method to quench this curiosity is to buy perfume decants or samples from each perfume family. Certain fragrances are thought representative for the family they come from, but smelling several from each category will certainly help forming a concept about the main characteristics of each class.

Screen as well as Blue Light Reading Glasses - The Issues With Clear Blue Light Eyeglass Solutions
Guide - Over the last number of years, as palm-held devices like cell apple iPad, tablets, and phones have actually become a lot more preferred, some people are experiencing signs like migraines and wooziness, and even insomnia. Current research studies have advised that the blue light emitted by these types of tools is actually the resource of these issues. I have had many folks call me along with questions regarding the signs they are actually experiencing while using these units.
Tumblr media
Blue Light
The spectrum of light that is actually of worry is the around the aspect of the UV-A band phoned, Near UV-A. It has actually been recognized for a long time that UV light, both UV-An and also UV-B, may be harmful to the eyes. Just recently, research studies have actually presented that Near UV-A could also be unsafe.
Symptoms and Problems
People utilizing these devices have actually mentioned indicators like loss of concentration, migraines, and sleep problems. Loss of concentration and migraines might result from not possessing proper restorative analysis or computer system analysis glasses and/ or even centering intensely for long periods of your time at a near aspect and dropping holiday accommodation. Indicators like vertigo or even sleep problems are actually not normal but also indicate another cause or result in the studies.
I was checking out in the evening.
It shows up that folks experience more of these signs and symptoms in the evening and unaware, without using outside light sources.
Devices That Emit Blue Light
There are lots of, and they are actually not just handhelds:
iPad tablets, tablets, cell phones, personal computer displays, specific neon lights, and even more.
Easy Solutions
Prescribed glasses or going through glasses along with a blue blocking lens. These lenses have a special form of window tint with a yellow or even yellow golden different colors and UV and B filters.
Monitor Glasses
While high-quality sunglasses ought to block UV, you definitely would not want to use all of them while going through in the evening. There are actually several forms of no-power glasses that are actually created to strain blue light, Near UV-A, UV-An, and UV-B, like the clear blue light glasses and the Gamers Edge.
For more information about blue light, visit: https://www.swanwicksleep.com/collections/day-swannies
Display Reading Glasses- These are the same as Monitor Glasses; however, they are actually created along with analysis lenses or even bifocal analysis lenses along with an exclusive color.
The magnifying you pick relies on just how distant you review your selected unit. Your total reading power is what you would certainly prefer if you review at about 12 to 14 inches. If you read through about the division's span, at that point, one-half of that energy would certainly be what you will pick.
The most effective means to identify your analysis electrical power is to acquire an eye test, but there are actually basic analysis exams that you can take online that, if carried out carefully, may offer really good outcomes.
A Few Visual Health Reading Tips
Move your stare off of near items every five moments approximately to something distant.
Don't review a light-sending unit in complete night. Ensure there is actually a light source behind you and facing you, like a bedside table lamp and an additional light or even light in the same room.
Many standard screen TVs have back area lights. Utilize them.
Use Monitor Glasses or even Monitor Reading Glasses that possess a blue blocking shade.
Get a routine eye assessment as well as associate any type of problems you may be actually experiencing with your eye care expert.
Ultraviolet radiation can be divided into three primary bands or even groups, depending on insight:
1. UVC radiation - 100 to 290nm.
UVC rays are soaked up by the critical ozone level that surrounds the Earth as a portion of the outer atmosphere, thereby preventing this radiation from reaching the ground.
2. UVB radiation - 290 to 320nm.
UVB radiation is actually the absolute most risky, as this is what may damage the eyes and result in sunburn to the skin layer. UVB is actually the cause of snow-blindness, where the radiation causes a photochemical response in the cornea as well as overlapping conjunctiva after a handful of hours of exposure, producing swelling of the cornea (edema) and inflammation of the bordering tissue. The swollen, oedematous cornea comes to be gloomy - hence the tarnished eyesight, and likewise very distressing. There is actually photophobia (disapproval of any exposure to light) and also a contraction of the eyelids. It usually lasts a number of times and is merely eased by using nearby anesthetic declines, amethocaine 1%, to decrease the ache, and adrenalin goes down 0.01% to relieve the congestion.
UVB radiation does not go through glass, so a simple glass lens will stop it from hitting the eye. Polycarbonate, a sort of plastic often utilized for sight as well as sunglass lenses, likewise quit completely.
Some feel that routine exposure to UVB radiation can, over a time frame, result in flood buildup at an earlier grow older than ordinary, and may also trigger the progression of pterygia, which are actually growths of cells that encroach over the cornea coming from the edges.
3. UVA radiation - 320 to 400nm.
In contrast to UVB, which differs in magnitude with the amount of time, UVA radiation is even more steady along with less variety. Likewise, it is actually certainly not shut out through the glass and so can still pass through to reach the eye. The clear lens of the human eye takes in most of the UVA radiation; thus, hardly any sort of UVA is permitted to pass through to the back of the eye. There is actually no known evidence that UVA results in damage to the eye, although the clinical point of view is still split as well as under controversy.
UVA radiation was actually originally thought to have merely a slight effect on the skin layer, yet the latest research studies have actually presented that whilst UVB creates damage to the surface levels of the skin as sunburn, the UVA infiltrates into the much deeper coatings of the skin layer, creating harm additionally down.
Demonstrated Light.
UV radiation certainly not just reaches our company directly from the sunlight, but a considerable section is actually reflected coming from several surfaces around our company, to reach our eyes as well as skin layer indirectly. Fresh new snow can mirror the most, with up to 80% mirrored UV radiation. On holiday on the beach, sand can show 15% UV light, along with cement structures and wall structures, and so on. A foaming, frothy sea mirrors 25%, whereas still water, as well as typical ground, shows around 10% UV radiation.
You are choosing your Sunglass window tint.
Preferably, you must opt for a color that soaks up at least 98% of both UVA and also UVB radiation. If you find a label "UV400", this suggests that all radiation up to 400nm (thus all UV radiation) is absorbed or even shut out by the lens.
Dark gray, grey/green, or brownish are the three primary colors to pick from and are actually a personal taste. On my own, I like gray or even grey/green, given that it seems to be to keep the colors lifelike, yet many individuals like brownish considering that it can enrich the comparison, therefore helping to help make things seem sharper. Yellow-brown colored tints are used to screen blue light, which again boosts contrast, so producing the picture sharper. Yellow-brown tints can easily, therefore, be made use of for snow skiing, cruising, flighting, intended capturing, and so on.
. Lens helped make coming from polycarbonate absorb the majority of UV radiation, and also coil layouts are good for avoiding light coming from getting in the eye from the sides.
Children as well as UV Light.
As UV damage usually tends to develop over many years of direct exposure, including happening holiday to cozy brilliant climates or playing outdoors on a sunny time, children, as well as young people, go to certain threat, and also you must regularly look at some sort of glasses defense for all of them despite the fact that they appear to cope with vivid light better than us adults (when dipping into the seaside, as an example). Using a peaked hat is actually not really sufficient security, like a ton of the UV radiation is mirrored off the ground (view earlier "reflected light") and directly into the eyes, particularly on a soft sand seaside. Ensure the sunglasses have full UV security.
Blue Light -The sphere of light that is of worry is actually the near part of the UV-A band phoned, Near UV-A. It has been actually recognized for some opportunity that UV light, both UV-An, and UV-B, maybe actually unsafe to the eyes. Golden colored window tints are made use of to block out blue light, which again improves contrast, therefore producing the photo sharper. Lenses made coming from polycarbonate absorb a lot of UV radiation, and cover around layouts are excellent for avoiding light coming from getting in the eye from the sides.
Using a peaked limit is actually certainly not truly enough protection, as a whole lot of the UV radiation is actually shown off the ground (see earlier "reflected light") and directly into the eyes, particularly on a sandy seashore.

A postulation of climate
Engagement:
I object to the use of the term humankind. Mankind is to man as cat kind is to cats. We do not speak of queeneries. Humankind is to speak of Anglo-Saxon-man-kind and is far less inclusive, it is effectively to say Caucasian-kind and is difficult for other ethnicities to interact with[1]. Peoplekind is not used as people refers to the individual and not the type. Man as type, man as gender, man as dominion holder and man as the keeper.
Abstract:
I usually try and work with no presumptions. Ordinarily, that means nothing determines that the answer is some particular thing, but, equally, nothing means it cannot be. There is only what fits all of the data, and possibility. It is an interesting way to work.
One of the traps is to think that because some particular answer seems to fit the data that it will be the answer. It might be but, make no presumptions as there are always either other possibilities or, more to realise. In many ways it is like chipping away at a rock to find diamonds, exposing solid truth.
As I examine an idea I turn the facets of the idea in my mind and compare with known data to see how to my mind the idea seems to fit. If it is a good fit then factual comparisons with references, review of data, and actual computations are made to see if the way I hold the idea in my mind is consistent with measurable reality. With some practice, we become adept at making these comparisons.
Sometimes, weeks afterwards, after learning just one more fact, the entire results part of the conceptual model must be remade. If you can accept that as just a part of the process, then it is completely not frustrating but actually rewarding and you can easily move forward into the new conceptual model.
Climate-change discussions that I have been involved with pre-date discussions of the ozone layer. We were very fortunate to have a well connected secondary college, one that I now sadly miss as a government casualty, but one so adept at raising the brightest and the best. The early discussion considered changes in climate in terms of the possibility Sol was shining brighter than before or, that more solar output was somehow reaching the Earth than previously, that the interspacial conditions were changed. Consideration was given to the possible effects of deforestation. Nobody that I know of then foresaw the extent of the present glacial melt or, at least it was not spoken of. The important thing was that sound methodology was already looking at the measurables.
A postulation of climate:
It has been a learning process over a number of years to come into contact with various pieces of relevant information concerning the climate. Only more recently has media become involved with coverage stretching at times to near hyperbole, and with periods of a lull in coverage in between. At first public discussion via media, many of those who remember were spurred on by memories in the victory of ozone-depleting chemicals that whatever the issue we would resolve it but, as it happens for the issue of climate it is not that simple.
The Earth's atmosphere is a complex soup, many chemicals we give little thought to and have heard little of trickle into the atmosphere and yet play their part. Only a few are well known, such as methane and carbon-di-oxide, but their role in the broader ecology is for most people not well understood. There are vast reserves of both stored within Earth's habitat, deep underground and, under our glaciers and oceans. Therein lies a part of the problem as temperatures creep even part of a few degrees, that the climb in temperature and additional melt it causes releases more of the stored gasses, which in turn is inclined to result in further melts and further releases. It would seem that if climate cannot be reasonably maintained if not controlled, then the situation has disaster written all over it. That seems to be a summary of the position and direction of public education on climate change but, that is based on opinion. There is much more information available.
Other outcomes are equally, if not more possible. I intend in the next few paragraphs to deal in the realm of possibility and expect in the next few years some of what I write may well be shown to be outside the realm of possibility with new data. For the benefit of the reader to undertake a little self-research, I have deliberately limited myself to postulation with data and facts as I remember them. I have not yet taken my models to review and comparisons of references as discussed earlier, although I will do so shortly and suggest that you may also wish to do so. The purpose is to objectify that although the media disseminates information, it is often not responsible for the rhetoric it spruiks or for its own echo, and that there is a vast amount that we still do not understand about climate and what is likely to come. The news provided to the general public is largely unscientific.
Irreducibly, the pertinent decisions we as mankind must make are barely unaltered by climate change; it is simple to show that events only dictate the priority and order by which we must work, the timeline, and not what has to be accomplished. We must plant trees for the health of the Earth and, we must develop long-long-range off-planet habitation.
What may be:
Up until recently, I was unaware of a set of data compiled by NOAA (formerly NCDC) under the heading Glacial-Interglacial Cycle[2]. My previous personal outlook only provided views of the runaway climate model, or if we are able to intervene, as many years as possible of the climate we are much familiar with for the past thousands of years. There is a video on the internet describing a possible worst-case scenario[3]. Initially, my interest was piqued by a study in deforestation that shows, by estimate, we are short 50% of the arborage of Earth. Something like 3,000,000,000,000 trees since the close of the last ice-age, and it seems obvious that such a reduction is going to dramatically reduce the environmental coping mechanisms capacity for changes in atmospheric and solar conditions[4]. The specific accuracy of either the percentage of loss or actual count is of little importance provided we agree that they are estimates provided by some scientific process. Even if both the numbers for percentage loss and the actual count are overestimated by 75% it is still a significant number. I came across the additional NOAA data while searching for more references into tree numbers and deforestation, around the search term glaciation.
The picture provided by the Glacial-Interglacial Cycle, however, is vastly different to the runaway climate model but there are still causes for concern. What if the cycle relies upon additional greening from photosynthesis in the early stages of warming to somehow turnaround the warming cycle, possibly through additional cooling evaporation due to the abundance and colour intensity of the arborage? So that once the Earth begins to warm it flips a switch and cools significantly?
There are other possibilities to consider in processes that may, or could, take place here on Earth to result in cooling. The important thing is that it is not the first time we have approached what seems from our present view to be an unrecoverable warm, release, warm cycle, and so far, in each case, it is followed by remarkable cooling. What if it is so cold for such a sufficient period that we all freeze? We have all seen sprouts grow in a cupboard so we can be sure plants will still do some growing if there is sufficient warmth even without much light, but planning for building in mile-deep sliding snowdrifts, early soft glaciations, is not progressing. In fact, it is worth noting in passing that such conditions leave very little evidence of life or civiliation to remain so; by the time of a thaw, our great, great, great grandchildren, presuming that they survive, would possibly think that they started the world new.
There are other possible processes outside the local Earth environment that could play a part and this is part of the benefit of working with no presumptions and allowing the available data to dictate the model while working from possibility, so I will pose a long series of questions, and I suppose somebody will calculate eventually what the odds are.
We note that the Glacial-interglacial Cycle page provides a graph titled "Years before present (in thousands)" with the following blurb:
Solar radiation varies smoothly through time (top, orange line) with a strong cyclicity of ~23,000 years, as seen in this time series of July incoming solar radiation at 65°N (Berger and Loutre 1991). In contrast, glacial–interglacial cycles last ~100,000 years (middle, black line) and consist of stepwise cooling events followed by rapid warmings, as seen in this time series inferred from hydrogen isotopes in the Dome Fuji ice core from Antarctica (Kawamura et al. 2007). Atmospheric CO2 measured from bubbles in Dome Fuji ice (bottom, blue line) shows the same pattern as the temperature time series (Kawamura et al. 2007). Yellow columns indicate interglacial periods. Glacial-Interglacial Cycle (NOAA, n.d.)[2]
Altogether the graph appears very regular with set cyclic motions during even, regular time-spans. We can ask what events coincide with the notable events on the graph, suggesting that those preceding a given point may be the cause and those during up until the point of recovery may assist that the events continue. In the most recent cycle we cool, and cool, and cool, and cool, right up until approximately 10,000 years ago. We can say that in all probability we were inevitably involved 10,000 years ago but, what about the several occurrences previous to that? As to the causes, it may easily be celestial in nature even as it may be Eathly. Playing possibility, we observe that the output of Sol changes over time with its own cycles, why cannot it change more so, the 100-year average could easily rise and fall making the graph operate in accordance, but then we would wish to know what was its cause. A 100,000 year major cycle of the Sun reaching well below what we currently call solar-minimum makes some sense. Perhaps, even if for a year duration the Sun effectively went out by comparison with what we are used to? There would be possibly little archaeological record of that on Earth either in rock or in ice since the day-by-day states usually accumulate to make up averages in the record by depth.
We can observe the operation of a kerosine fridge, why is the Earth's atmosphere very much different? Turn the Sun out for a year, allow the Earth to chill and then turn the Sun back on. The Sun does not have to go all the way off, just reduce below what we consider the solar-minimum. The cooling heating means that the heating near the equator is likely more pronounced moving air currents higher where they cool more and provide additional cooling at the poles. The Sun going out restarting the blast chiller cycle on full. Technically if there is a way for the Sun to go out these things are easily foreseeable. Likewise, this could have happened in the past.
We could come up with all kinds of fancy theories as to how this may happen. A once every 100,000 years a super-highspeed galaxial comet that rushes past and snaps up the magnetic flux from the solar system disturbing the output of the Sun. A one every 50,000 years event that we experience first in one direction and then another, where we are largely shielded each second occurrence due to the polarity of the heliosheath. As it is presently, we cannot account for the cause of the cycles of Sol that we are observe and cannot determine then if there may not be additional solar confluences. Think in terms of harmonies and interaction, causing changes in the output and observable conditions of the Sun.
If some event on Earth, I propose that global wildfires or some volcanological event bring to a close the interglacial period, I cannot think of much else. It may be merely the prevalence of trees that bring the glacial period's opening. If a celestial event, either changes in the output of the Sun, possibly magnetically regulated, or changes in the local interspace conditions. Eventually, if you consider, the Sun both inside up to the surface, and again outside to the heliosheath, is not much different to a plasma ball. You change the excitement, you change the output, you change the medium, you change the permeation.
Conclusion:
Studies in harmony conclude that we should avoid doing anything with negative input into the equilibrium. This includes things that seem to be without direct negative consequences as the studies provide that a small thing can have strong and lasting consequences affecting many while seeming in itself and in observation in close quarters to affect nothing, such as cutting down a tree. If equilibrium is represented as a scale then as we observe close to the pointer arm further down closer to our present and personal situation there seems to be no noticeable effect for cutting down one tree, and as both sides of the scale arm move since it is a thickness wide there may even seem to be some positive effect noting in proximity to location and time, however, further up the arm and with the passage of time the pointer swerves wildly, the oceans churned and men are berayed. What if from that one tree came a new species necessary for the maintenance of climate, the habitation of far off worlds or an elixir of untold health and wisdom? People dismiss it is philosophy but, the butterfly effect is real, and I prefer to consider equilibrium and harmony than that. Also, do not allow a preference for equilibrium to make you weak, we are conquerors, we have dominion, we have a worthwhile purpose, we have much to accomplish and, we have responsibility.
Science data proves that the Glacial-Interglacial Cycle is something, and we postulate what it means and how it may conceivably operate.

CLIMATE CHANGE RHETORIC
This is one of my research papers for the graduate program at CSUSB. It is just a draft and needs a lot of work still but if you are interested in climate change rhetoric and what enforces or influences perception about climate change, you may enjoy reading it.  Please keep in mind it is unfinished and just a draft.  Comments or constructive criticism is appreciated.
Essay/Literature Review Third Draft
Climate change is a controversial issue that is difficult to understand.  What is climate change and who is responsible for educating society and politicians, who are they key players and how does the news media influence perception of sociopolitical views of climate change affect mitigation of climate change?
WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE?
To understand why education is needed, we need to understand what causes climate change and scientists must accept the task of conveying their scientific findings in terms understood by society before it is too late to impede the impending climate change crisis. Not everyone understands the causes and repercussions of harmful chemicals that mix with our atmosphere and taking on the task must be a ubiquitous effort of the scientific community.  What is global warming and how does it cause climate change? Climate change is a controversial issue which requires global solutions. Ban Ki-moon is the Secretary General of the United Nations states, “Ours can be the first generation to end poverty – and the last generation to address climate change before it is too late.” (Ban Ki-moon).  Ki-moon understood that this is the last generation that could make a global difference. However, to change an issue one must have an understanding of why exists and what it is.   To understand why climate change is an issue, you must first understand what climate change is and how it affects the earth and our atmosphere To gain an understanding of anthropogenic climate change I will use the three most valuable research resources available for information about anthropogenic climate change, Nasa and the Environmental Protection Agency and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. First of all, we need to understand that there is a difference between “Climate change” and “global warming.”  Although the terms are used interchangeably, they have distinct meanings. To understand the difference between climate change and global warming, I will explain the causes, the effects, and the relationship between global warming and climate change.  Global warming refers to the upward temperature trend across the entire Earth since the early 20th century, and most notably since the late 1970s, due to the increase in fossil fuel emissions since the industrial revolution… the average surface temperature has gone up by about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F)” (Nasa). Global warming is caused when the chemicals created by gas emissions, burning coal, and methane from landfills and other chemicals are trapped in the earth’s stratosphere and prevent the heat that radiates to the earth from radiating back into the outer atmospheres.  The heat radiates back to earth causing the global warming.  (Nasa) It is imperative to understand that there are different layers in the earth’s atmosphere and global warming is a result of chemical changes in atmospheric layers closest to the earth. The two layers of the earth’s atmosphere which are most affected by chemical changes are the troposphere (smog) and stratosphere (ozone layer).  Products of industrial processes or manufactured for human purposes such as cleaning agents, refrigerants, and electrical insulators. Fluorinated gasses like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), hydrofluorocarbons (HCFCs), Bromo fluorocarbons (halons), perfluorocarbons, PFCs, nitrogen trifluoride, NF3, and sulfur hexafluoride, SF6 .   Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are “volatized or released into the air mostly during manufacture or use of everyday products and materials” (EPA). Ozone depletion is the gradual thinning of Earth’s ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere where 90% of the ozone layer exists.  This is caused by the release of chemical compounds from industry and other human activities. Increased usage of chemicals which contain fluorine and chlorine atoms are depleting the ozone layer. It creates a domino effect.  The chemicals released into our atmosphere are trapped in the stratosphere and are damaging the ozone layer and depleting it. The ozone layer absorbs Ultraviolet rays emitted from the sun which are radiated off the earth.  UV ray not absorbed are trapped in the stratosphere due to the greenhouse effect caused by chemical compounds which trap them in the stratosphere. These UV rays are dispersed in different directions and back towards the earth causing warmer temperatures (global warming).  The warming temperatures are causing miles long icebergs to break off in regions of Antarctica causing sea levels to rise and affecting the climate in different regions of the earth. According to Nasa, “Climate change is a change in the usual weather found in a place. This could be a change in how much rain a place usually gets in a year. Or it could be a change in a place's usual temperature for a month or season” (Nasa).  “Most climate scientists agree the main cause of the current global warming trend is human expansion of the "greenhouse effect“ warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space… Certain gases in the atmosphere block heat from escaping… are described as "forcing" climate change.” (Nasa, italics added). Although there is scientific evidence to support this issue, news media rhetoric influences perception of this issue and causes doubt. (Nasa).
WHO ARE THE KEY PLAYERS THAT AFFECT MITIGATION?
Society, Individuals, Politicians and Scientists are the key players in anthropogenic climate change mitigation.  Climate change was a bipartisan issue a decade ago.  Today right-wing authoritarian politicians are steeped in denialism and no longer moved by scientific fact but by ideologies and denialism rhetoric from elite cues which begin with those in office in our current government, those in cabinet positions closest to the president which will not disagree with a narcissistic, alleged patriot that states that climate change is a “Hoax!”  They pool their efforts to battle against Democrats and the “New Green Deal” or any other environmental impact policy which will mitigate anthropogentric climate change and work against Democrats to remove or amend policies which remove limits to fracking and enable companies which engage in fracking to pollute our environment. Fracking is known to cause methane leaks which cause global warming and pollute soil and water.  Society is influenced by what they see in the media and their preconceived notions are enforced or they are influenced by media rhetoric and the news media they choose to watch has a biased opinion of anthropogenic climate change.  Scientist who are the possessors of scientific fact of the causes of climate change, global warming, greenhouse gasses, ozone layer depletion.  Scientist hold all the cards to the truth but without a ubiquitous effort to work with news media and scholastic institutions to provide the information at a level that is understood by everyone, at any age, in society.  These are the key players but there is also another key player which influences through radio shows, cable shows and the internet it is the news media.
DATA FROM PREVIOUS RESEARCH
News media rhetoric is biased and can influence an audience with conservative or liberal views depending on what media source you choose.  Media rhetoric can reinforce existing beliefs in climate change and media sources.  News media sources like the Sean Hannity show or Rush Limbaugh who are avid Trump supporters promote a biased view based on conservative beliefs formed by the rhetoric inspired by elite cues given from government officials who do not believe in climate change. (Bolin, Crawford).  Information sources like the news media reinforce political differences and serves as a source to reinforces existing beliefs about climate change and affect public policy by using news media rhetoric to influence public opinion. Public opinion can be swayed but individuals who have experienced “wildfires, floods, crop failure, or disease infestation” (Howard and Livermore) are more likely to view the climate change crisis differently despite controversial media rhetoric.  According to Michael F. Dahlstrom, perception of global warming and climate change can be influenced and enforced by news media rhetoric, and other information sources (internet) and politicians’ views on this issue.  The influence of news media is very biased and changes according to the broadcasting stations station’s decisions to air media rhetoric which supports their views. Conservative broadcasting which caters to Republicans (Fox News) will generate their news media rhetoric according to Republican views, despite scientific fact, or on the beliefs of the candidates they support. Efforts to influence sociopolitical perception is includes the use metaphors. Conservative news media uses the word “hoax” to influence and create a perception of denialism.  Liberal new media uses the scientific metaphor “tipping point” to describe the impending climate change crisis reaching a point of no return to influence advocates to take the fight to congress for better climate change policies. The use of these metaphors in the news media gives an opportunity to influence perception on this matter and affects politics.
Politicians who are biased pose the greatest threat to mitigation efforts.  Since the 2016 election of Donald Trump, he has un-did the tentative consensus among major emitting nations in favor of confronting climate change. He did this by removing the United States from the Paris Climate Change Accord which is a global association that works towards reversing the progress of climate change by carbon-intensive fuel sources, most notably coal and carbon dioxide. This caused the United States to lag behind Latin America and Africa in concern about climate change. (See Appendix A-D). The nations involved in this organization must submit detailed reports of their efforts to limit harmful emission.  The United States President has chosen to not be accountable and thus hinders climate change policies which will limit emissions of the fuel, oil and coal industries.  Since the Trump administration began, the use of harmful chemical has continued to increase due to the president’s efforts to change Obama policies which were aimed at reducing the use of harmful chemical. The president’s rhetoric against climate change and his myriad of statements which state climate change is a “hoax” is steeped in denialism and has had a damaging effect on public perception of climate change.  (Dahlstrom).  News media has played a large part in enforcing perception of the climate change issue.  News media rhetoric is partly responsible for the division between political parties on the climate change issue.  According to Gallup, “Democrats More Uniform Than Republicans in Global Warming Outlook… Bigger differences are seen by party and political ideology. Most Democrats (77%) are classified as Concerned Believers, while half of Republicans (52%) are Cool Skeptics. Notably, virtually all Democrats who aren't Concerned Believers fall into the Mixed Middle category. By contrast, non-skeptical Republicans on the global warming spectrum are more divided. Overall, 16% of Republicans are Concerned Believers and 32% are the Mixed Middle. At 81%, self-described liberals are the most likely group to be classified as Concerned Believers. A majority of moderates fit this description, while conservatives are split. The plurality of conservatives are Cool Skeptics, but a full quarter are Concerned Believers”. (See Appendix A-D).  Politicians perceptions of this issue are influenced by the news media sources they watch.
The president’s perception of climate change also affects conservative politicians.  The president’s view is repeated on interviews and rhetoric by the media affects the sociopolitical belief and mitigation of climate change. This is an independent cause of weakening climate policies. What I found most impressive was how the use of rhetoric in the news media coupled with the elite cues of those steeped in denialism give a false representation about the scientific uncertainties of climate change.  It confirms the use of rhetoric in media that contains false information is damaging to climate change mitigation because the representations are not based on scientific fact and are just ideologies which cause social distrust of law makers and their political motives. It also attempts to invalidate scientific truth and the factual data which exists on this issue. The role of the elite and oligarchy-based nature of political policy making in the U.S. Congress is responsible for lack of mitigation efforts due to moneyed interests. (Rafaty).  In “The Moderating Role of Interest in Politics on the Relations between Conservative Political Orientation and Denial of Climate Change.” Guiseppe Carrus, et al., found that political orientation and social dominance orientations climate change policies and that ideologies relate to climate change denial.  They examined how political relationships are affected by denialism using U.S. electorate data to show how right-wing authoritarianism effect interest in climate change politics. This is consistent with the findings of Ryan Rafaty in his journal “Perceptions of Corruption, Political Distrust, and the Weakening of Climate Policy.”. Unfortunately, political orientation and money interests affect political policy making in the government. Politicians are biased because of where their campaign contributions come from and if they are supported by the fuel, oil and coal industries which are the most responsible for harming our environment, when they appear on the news media they will speak in terms that are biased towards contrary views of these industries and use the media as a platform to enforce preconceived opinions that climate change is a “Hoax” and influence society into denialism of climate change.
The news media serves as a source to reinforce existing beliefs about climate change. Politicians who lean towards denialism have been affected by new media rhetoric and this influences the public and policy makers.  Advocates for changing climate change policies should not take this lightly.  The role of the media is of major importance and educating the public regarding environmental issues is a necessity but there is a problem because the science is difficult to understand, and science does not encompass measures for public awareness.  The lack of education about environmental issues affect the public and is related how the public perceives the threat of climate change. (Legagnex, et al.).  Scientists, policy makers, and journalists are three key, interconnected players involved in prioritizing and implementing solutions to mitigate the consequences of anthropogenic pressures on the environment. The way in which information is framed and expertise is communicated by the media is crucial for political decisions and for the integrated management of environmental issues. Legageneux in his journal presented a comparative study of scientific literature and press articles addressing climate change and biodiversity. scrutinized the scientific literature, research funding, and press articles from the USA, Canada, and United Kingdom addressing climate change and biodiversity issues between 1991 and 2016.  He found that that media coverage of climate change was up to eight times higher compared to biodiversity. This discrepancy could not be explained by different scientific output between the two issues. Moreover, climate change media coverage was often related to specific events whereas no such indication of a connection was found.  He discusses several initiatives that scientists could undertake to better communicate major discoveries to the public and policy makers. (Legagneux).  Invoking strategies is what is needed by advocates; finding a way to reach mass society to create ubiquitous concern for the climate change issues so that politician will mitigate this issue.  Here are certain connections which need further examination in relation to the causes and of climate change. There is a lack of understanding or non-belief that fracking (needed for oil drilling) contributes to climate change when leakage occurs. Some studies are in the process of being conducted because they are finding a direct link between fracking and methane in the atmosphere. Fossil fuel leaks damage the earth and poison water supplies and release methane into the air.  Polls indicate that many in society believe that more drilling for oil is needed in the United States, while only 33% believe we should not drill for oil. (See Appendix A-D). Again, the issue is sociopolitical education is needed to understand the issue and begin to mobilize society to influence politicians to make climate policy changes with regard to fracking.  Most people don’t know what fracking is or how it harms the environment till they are in the midst of a natural disaster. The conflict between Democrats and Republicans has created a large gap which is reflected on issues where there is an obvious lack of mitigation. The news media serves as a source to reinforce existing beliefs about climate change.  It influences the existing political breach between political parties and contributes to the wide gap between scientific fact and denialism. The effect of media rhetoric to influence the public and policy makers should not be taken lightly.  The role of the media is of major importance and educating the public regarding environmental issues is a necessity but there is a problem because the science is difficult to understand, and science does not encompass measures for public awareness.  The lack of education about environmental issues affect the public and is related how the public perceives the threat of climate change and is related to lack of mitigation. (Legagnex, et al.).  Currently, the president and politicians use their elite position to spew climate change propaganda which is contrary to the scientific evidence and has coined the metaphor “Hoax” to dispel concerns about climate change and uses it as a rhetorical device to sow seeds of doubt about climate change to the public.  This is evident in the latest Gallup Poll of 2019 (See Appendix A-D) which indicates that there is a great divide in climate opinion.  The greatest gaps include whether global warming is affecting climate. While 59% of those polled believe that global warming is causing climate change, only 7% believe that this is not true, and weather corporation should do more to address global warming 69% say yes while 12% do not believe a corporation should do more.  It is interesting to note that the greatest emitters of harmful emissions are fuel and oil corporations.  Prior to the 2016 elections climate change was a bipartisan issue.  Since the election of Donald Trump there has been a great divide between political parties with each taking a stand on each side of the spectrum of belief and disbelief in climate change issues due to media rhetoric.  Conservative elites and fuel industry organizations saturate public discourse with arguments for rejecting climate change.  (Bolin and Hamilton). Conflict in environmental policies effects mitigate of climate change due to the sociopolitical feedback which affect lawmakers. Available data on this subject explain how emissions, climate damages, economic/political disruption are interrelated and effect policy change. (Livermore). “Emissions of pollutants in the air can result in changes to the climate. Ozone in the atmosphere warms the climate, while different components of particulate matter (PM) can have either warming or cooling effects on the climate. For example, black carbon, a particulate pollutant from combustion, contributes to the warming of the Earth, while particulate sulfates cool the earth's atmosphere. These are concepts that are difficult for the average layman and some politicians to understand.  Howard and Livermore get a lot of the information they used in their journal from the IPCC Report. This is one of the best sources for obtaining the latest information related to global warming and climate change; It is an international association with over one hundred forty members which include dignitaries and scientists from around the world.  (Livermore). The average person does not know that this source is readily available to the public because it is a scientific report.  A work of scientific composition written in scientific language which is difficult to understand.  Brolin and Hamilton use generalized structural equation modeling system, coupled with survey data and previous work on this subject (news media amplifications) to show how education and political ideology’s interactions help determine how media information choices and climate change is predicted in social opinions. It also shows how selective exposure and biased assimilation are mechanisms used by individuals and the media to create a greater divide between politicians on issues related to climate change. (Brolin and Hamilton).  According to Gallup, “in terms of demographic differences, there is a 20-percentage-point spread between the youngest and oldest Americans in those classified as Concerned Believers: 67% of those 18 to 29 vs. 47% of those 65 and older. Additionally, only 7% of young adults meet the definition of Cool Skeptics, compared with 22% of seniors. There is a 15-point spread in Concerned Believers by education: 58% of postgraduates vs. 43% of adults with no college experience. And conforming with the more Democratic orientation of women and nonwhite Americans, both of these groups are more likely than their counterparts to be Concerned Believers”. (See Appendix B). Brolin and Hamilton understood the part played by education and political ideology and how exposure and biased assimilations used by the media can create a greater divide on belief and unbelief of the climate issue.  The mechanisms, interactions and political influence from elite individuals and the news media affect sociopolitical perspective and the denialism rhetoric discounts the scientific facts relating to climate change. (Bolin and Hamilton)
Laura Crawford found that a links between science and policy is navigated prominently in the news media. The internet provides a forum for discussion of climate change, allowing lay people to enter the debate. Crawford analyzed online news articles and comments from the public following two major climate-related decisions in New Zealand. Her analysis demonstrated how arguments regarding climate change are built and defended. Identifying strategies invoked by those that occupy a majority or minority position within public discourse on climate change reveals how such arguments take on rhetorical force, providing the basis for establishing claims and counterarguments. This study confirmed that discourse interactions between the public and the media can be used to enforce or initiate concerns about climate change. She noted a close relationship between science and policy and how it is affected public arguments.  The journal also provided information on how the arguments are built on both sides of the spectrum of climate change.  Ii showed how rhetoric is used as a force to establish claims and counter arguments and can help individuals prepare a strategy that is effective in many forms of discourse whether it is public speaking, the news media or other forms of public discourse on climate issues. (Crawford) Policy issues are affected by these mechanisms. Politicians will either take steps to mitigate anthropogenic climate change or they will deny climate change exists and impede legislative attempts to make political policy which will place limits on the fuel and other industries which are responsible for causing anthropogenic climate change. (Povitkina).
To change climate change denialism to belief the scientific community needs to develop a rapport with news media stations to provide the sociopolitical education required for society to understand what climate change is and how it affects humanity.  Using the news media as a tool for advocacy and education could influence society and change the sociopolitical perception of the climate change issue.

The Best Spots For A Coffee Date In London
We love a coffee date. Not because we secretly think matcha might be an aphrodisiac or because the hum of a milk frother is basically Marvin Gaye to our ears, but because a coffee date gives you so much more flexibility. If the date goes well you can casually move on to drinks or dinner, and if it’s a hard pass you can be on your merry way without needing a mate to call you about a ‘very real emergency that is happening right now’. See, flexibility. And potentially, romance. Here are the best coffee shops in London that are perfect for a date.

The patio at Allpress deserves some kind of coffee romance award. We imagine this would involve a giant, golden mug statue handed out by Claudia Winkleman and Paddy McGuinness dressed as cupid. But until we make that a reality, feel free to use this Dalston spot as your own perfect date setting. The huge secluded patio is complete with big potted plants, trees, and rustic benches. But don’t panic if the weather turns, they have two-floors of seating inside and a coffee lab where you can nerd out on beans too.
 Milkbar £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Soho ££££ 3-5 Bateman St
When you’ve agreed to meet in Central because neither of you are ready to admit that you live in zone 4, Milkbar is a good shout. A discrete little coffee shop with a retro feel, Soho’s Milkbar is permanently popular without ever getting too busy. Despite being smack bang in the middle of Soho, it has a friendly feel, the coffee is great, and the music is just the right volume so you won’t need to shout. Also, it’s open until 5.30 every evening.
 Giulia Verdinelli Footnote £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Dalston ,  Hackney ££££ 51 Wilton Way
First impressions are important. That’s why you’re going to hide your Avengers tattoo for at least the first three years of this potential relationship. But honestly, it’s pretty hard to make a bad first impression at Hackney’s Footnote. We’re talking huge windows, foliage, blackboards, a picturesque wine-coloured front, and excellent coffee. If you’re looking to step things up, they have top brunch classics on offer. Did we mention the excellent coffee?
 Giulia Verdinelli Scooter Caffè £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Waterloo ££££ 132 Lower Marsh
If you’re after a coffee spot that’s cool and romantic but doesn’t feature latte art and death stares from bean-worshipping baristas, then Scooter Café is the place for you. This Waterloo café is housed in a converted motorcycle garage and is a little bit naff in all the right ways - see the vespa at the till and all of the posters of nuns riding scooters. We’ve been here for a date before so we can tell you first hand that it’s cheap, cheerful, and the little patio out back is perfect for spotting local cats and turning coffee into a couple of cocktails.
 Giulia Verdinelli Pophams Hackney £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Hackney ££££ 197 Richmond Road
We don’t care what our therapists say, bacon is a love language. As is cheese, mango custard, and pretty much anything else you’ll find inside Pophams’ pastries. But before you start bringing out doughy love bombs in the form of London’s best almond croissant, we’d like to remind you that this is about coffee. More specifically, sipping Ozone coffee together in the window of this comfortable and spacious Hackney bakery, to find out whether they are in fact worthy of a bacon and maple danish.
Giulia Verdinelli F. Mondays ££££ 112a Brixton Hill
We love F Mondays, and not just because its name is very much in keeping with our general life philosophy. No, we love F Mondays for their excellent coffee, collection of cacti, and their hidden garden out back. Anyone that would take us to this cool and casual spot on Brixton Hill would get a big tick from us, and probably a salted caramel brownie too. Just be warned that they close at 4pm during the week.
 Jolene £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery ,  Brunch  in  Hackney ,  Highbury ££££ 21 Newington Green
Dolly Parton references, initiated. There you go, you’ve already got your ice breaker sorted. Newington Green’s Jolene is spacious, comfortable, and very easy on the eye. Part-rustic, part-industrial, this all-day café will work just as well for a quick cup of coffee at the bar as it will for a four-hour D&M in their front garden. You should know that Jolene is first and foremost a bakery, so whether the date goes well or downright terribly, be sure to get yourself a pastry or two before leaving.
Giulia Verdinelli Greenberry Cafe £ £ £ £ Modern European ,  Cafe/Bakery  in  Primrose Hill ££££ 101 Regents Park Rd
Greenberry Café isn’t for first dates. We’d say that this charming little café in Primrose Hill is more second date territory. You know, when you already know you like them and can live with the fact they have a cat called Louis Furoux. As well as old-school checkered table-clothes, a green pastel front, and a cute little pavement terrace, the exposed brick interior also looks exactly like somewhere that a Richard Curtis meet-cute might take place. If you really want to make a good impression, head for a stroll up Primrose Hill once your coffee needs are covered.
Balcone ££££ 176 Victoria Park Road
Balcone is where you go when you want your date to know that you’re like, really cool and own at least one pair of corduroy dungarees. Oh, and yes, you do listen to Animal Collective, thanks for asking. This bright and modern coffee spot near Victoria Park always has a great playlist on the speakers, proper coffee available, and enough house plants dotted around for you to start up a conversation about your mutual love of cacti. Heads up, there’s also a nice little courtyard out back.
 Giulia Verdinelli Dark Habit £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery  in  Kilburn ££££ 72A Salusbury Road
If the name of a coffee shop sounds like it could also be the name of an indie band from the noughties then it’s a good place for a date. That’s just science. Or something. Anyway, Dark Habit falls into the above category. The look is chic modern minimalism and the coffee is great. If the ‘ick’ doesn’t strike by the time you’ve finished your flat white, take a stroll around Queen’s Park.
Fare Bar and Canteen £ £ £ £ Pizza ,  Modern European  in  Clerkenwell ,  Farringdon ££££ 11 Old Street
All you know about this person is what their Hinge profile has told you. So basically, you know that they once dressed up as Edward Scissorhands for halloween and that they have a real thing for a sepia filter. But Fare is a fitting background for properly getting to know someone. Game plan: start with a coffee on their patio out back, move to their high tables for a cocktail, and if you really like them, round the date off with a pizza and a bottle of wine at the central bar. Date, sorted.
 Vardo £ £ £ £ Cafe/Bakery ,  Brunch  in  Chelsea ££££ 9 Duke Of York Square
You want your date to believe that you make your bed every day and you almost, maybe, definitely have some kind of credit score. Go to Vardo. This all-day restaurant in Chelsea basically looks like a spaceship owned by an intergalactic movie star. Sit in the outdoor covered area, order a couple freshly-roasted macchiatos, and say something sophisticated like “this architecture has a real Zaha Hadid feel, don’t you think?”. Plus, if the date goes well you can transition into espresso martinis and dinner.
Ozone Coffee Roasters £ £ £ £ Pizza ,  Brunch  in  Bethnal Green ££££ Emma Street
Feeling nervous? Well, one of our mates accidentally poured an entire iced latte over their partner on their first date and now they’re getting married. We know, it’s a modern fairytale. And also, we hope it makes you feel better about your forthcoming date. No matter which faux pas you might make, Ozone will still impress. A fail-safe friend in coffee shop form, this place serves some of the best brews in London and it’s big enough that you should always be able to find a table.

It has been actually recognized for some opportunity that UV light, both UV-An, and UV-B, maybe actually unsafe to the eyes. Golden colored window tints are made use of to block out blue light, which again improves contrast, therefore producing the photo sharper.

July 19, 2020
My weekly roundup of these I am doing and looking at. Topics include the Biden energy plan, current vs. advanced nuclear, the construction industry, population trends, pesticides, and agglomeration.
The Biden Energy Plan
This week the Biden campaign put out an energy/climate plan. I won’t try to do a comprehensive rundown, but here are a few of my thoughts.
The core of the plan is $2 trillion of spending on clean energy infrastructure: renewable energy, electric vehicles, transit, housing, and building energy efficiency. I don’t find any of this to be objectionable, though it can be hard to forecast how cost effective spending approaches will be.
There is nothing on carbon pricing. I regard carbon pricing as essential to any credible decarbonization plan. With carbon pricing we know how cost effective decarbonization will be because cost-effectiveness is set.
The plan calls for $400B on R&D (that’s about two and a half Apollo Programs in modern dollar figures), with a wide range of areas including advanced nuclear, carbon capture, novel grid storage, electrofuels, and other areas. I consider R&D investment to be the other essential component to a credible decarbonization plan. This aspect of the Biden plan looks very good. The advanced nuclear concept has sparked some debate (see the next item). My friend Dan Rejto gives mixed reviews for the food and agriculture aspects of the plan. He notes some positive elements on the R&D side but the lack of funding for alternative proteins is a major omission.
There is lots and lots of emphasis on union jobs. I’m not really a big union enthusiast and wonder how this impacts the overall cost for a given result. There’s some rhetoric on trade that sounds vaguely protectionist.
The environmental justice section emphasizes enforcement of pollution laws, which sounds good, and “a goal that disadvantaged communities receive 40% of overall benefits of spending in the areas of clean energy and energy efficiency deployment”. I get nervous when EJ becomes a vehicle for passing out goodies. I see this all the time in local planning and the process can quickly devolve into a patronage system.
There’s no nonsense on curbing population, redefining GDP, or other such things. I didn’t expect there would be, but it is still a relief.
There’s nothing about NEPA reform or other regulatory reforms. There really needs to be when considering disbursing such large sums of money. Decarbonizing the power sector by 2035--at most 14 years after the plan could be become a legislative reality--will be difficult under ideal circumstances and impossible if we can’t build high voltage transmission, power plants, and other necessary infrastructure in a timely manner.
I think the plan is very smart politically. It basically serves the function of the Green New Deal, as envisioned by the progressive wing of the party, but it is being employed for party unity. Labor and social justice advocates both have much they can be happy with.
As far as policy merits, I’m in a good mood right now so I’ll give it three stars out of five.
Current versus Advanced Nuclear
The Biden energy plan calls for R&D into advanced nuclear, among other things, but the only line about current generation nuclear is “It would also mean continuing to leverage the carbon-pollution free energy provided by existing sources like nuclear and hydropower...” so at least that should mean avoiding premature nuclear closures. What about building new nuclear power with existing technology?
Among nuclear advocates, this is a major point of debate. One view is that current nuclear technology is too expensive and so we need to develop new technologies, such as small modular reactors (allow for fast and standardized factory construction), sodium-cooled reactors (avoid the need for elaborate containment systems). Or maybe we should go straight for fusion. The second view is that we should push for an asston of nuclear construction, like the French did, and make it cheap by standardizing it and building up a strong workforce.
I confess some agnosticism on this debate but am leaning ever more toward the second camp. Early SMR cost estimates don’t look especially promising, nor do the hypothetical costings I have seen for Gen IV nuclear or fusion. My fear is that if the focus is too much on R&D for the next generation, we won’t solve the fundamental problems that plague the current generation. Furthermore, I would expect that building out a strong nuclear engineering workforce will accelerate the development of new technology. So it’s not like “current vs. advanced” is actually a dichotomous choice.
What actually is the problem that plagues the current generation? I don’t entirely know. But I suspect it is a combination of general megaproject management problems identified by Bent Flyvbjerg, overregulation, and an industry that has gotten lazy.
Construction Technology
Speaking of construction, TechCrunch has a profile this week of a company called Social Construct, founded by Ben Huh of Cheezburger fame. The goal is to use CAD and modular construction to lower construction costs. For decades the industry has been plagued by cost and productivity problems that greatly exceed most other industries.
I have been interested in this topic for a while now and see construction costs as a major weak link in any credible effort to address housing costs. There would be great, broad-based social value for developing tools for turning around productivity trends. My suspicion is that the major bottleneck the industry faces is fragmentation. Not until we start seeing some major vertical (and maybe horizontal as well) integration will we see better planning and the opportunity to employ building information modeling, modular construction, robotics, 3D printing, or whatever other high tech tools people imagine.
As for Social Construct, I hope they’re successful. I’m a fan of I Can Has Cheezburger, Huh’s other notable work. But recent past efforts to modernize the construction industry, such as Google X’s endeavors, Katerra, and Plant Prefab, for instance, have not (yet) turned the industry around.
Population Trends
There was a major new study in The Lancet this week which forecast a peak human population in 2064 and a decline to a world TFR of 1.7 by 2100. This dire (from my pronatalist perspective) forecast seems to me to be a better reflection of actual trends than the standard UN forecast, which does not envision a peak population until around the turn of the century.
I think the study should be taken as a wakeup call for policy makers to take falling fertility seriously. The paper itself focuses on adaptation and immigration as solutions, generally pouring cold water on pronatalist policies (ducking the question of where the migrants will come from if the whole world sees sub-replacement fertility).
As a forecast, I think the paper is a good reflection of mainstream understanding and functions well as a reference point. But I still see wildcards which are not well understood (at least not by me) and could, over the course of 80 years, result in a reality quite different from forecasts. It is hard to imagine that more countries will not adopt much more aggressive pronatalist policies, perhaps going as far as state-sponsored child rearing and ectogenesis, if they become sufficiently alarmed. Culture can change in ways that are not predictable and not the same as past changes. Sooner or later natural selection should become noticeable as a factor causing a fertility rebound.
Pesticides
I haven’t done as much new content lately as usual for Urban Cruise Ship, since I’ve been focused on this longer term social endeavors project and some other things that aren’t going online for a while, but I did draft up a section on pesticides (sans graphics). A few observations.
I found several estimates on the externalized damages of agricultural pesticides at $4-19/kg. The world uses about 3.5 million tons per year, so that’s about $14-66 billion of externalized damages per year. These kinds of numbers are always fuzzy (and previously I’ve seen some higher estimates), but orders of magnitude estimates help us rank environmental issues by seriousness. Annualized damages from climate change, nitrogen runoff, and deforestation are in the trillions each. Land use and biodiversity loss may each reach into the tens of trillions. Poor ocean management, water pollution, and ozone depletion are in the hundreds of billions. So pesticides may be an order of magnitude or more lower than these other issues.
The world hasn’t seen a peak in pesticide usage overall or per acre, but there may have been a peak in per calorie of food.
The value of pesticides in modern agriculture is indisputable. Without them yields would probably be about half of what we see. That would mean either a massive conversion to additional cropland, labor costs from working the land, or we wouldn’t be able to feed the world. But we may be overusing pesticides relative to the optimum. China in particular.
Integrated pest management is the solution I see most often as to how to cut pesticide usage. It’s a fairly broad term that encompasses a range of tactics to control pests. The main barrier to expanding IPM is that it requires specialized knowledge and training, so labor costs come into play. IPM may be a bit like recycling in that regard, where labor can substitute for environmental harm. But in a world of growing wealth, and urbanizing, peaking, and aging population, solutions that involve more labor are not very attractive. This is probably an area where advancements in precision agriculture will be important.
Agglomerationists
Anton Howes discussed “the agglomerationists” in his newsletter this week. The idea that having more and better connected people fosters commerce and creates wealth is a thread that connects a range of policy views: pronatalism, urbanism, free trade, and free migration, for instance. This is something I have been thinking for a while and am grateful that Anton has articulated the concept better than I have.
One can take the agglomeration principle in a different direction though and see it as a challenge. In any system characterized by returns to scale, there is likely to be a diminishing returns problem, and I think we see plenty of evidence of this nowadays with stagnating productivity, high cost of urban living, and subreplacement fertility, for instance. It may be that the real agglomeration challenge is not to increase the scale of the economy so much as to develop less scale-dependent modes of production. I’m not sure if this goal is possible or desirable, but it would be good to be open minded.

Can Houseplants Really Clean The World's Smoggiest City?
NEW DELHI—On the roof of an office building in India's capital, the world's smoggiest city, Kamal Meattle has a unique tactic for cleaning the New Delhi air quality : a greenhouse with 400 common plants, including mother-in-law's tongue.
Meattle, the CEO of Paharpur Business Center, has 800 other plants spread throughout its lower six floors, greening each room and hallway. Their job: remove soot and other chemicals from the often charcoal-colored outdoor air.
In India, where almost no one wears filter masks on the streets as many do in China, Meattle is seen as a radical. He says he's even been dubbed the Mad Hatter of Nehru Place, a high-tech hub that's home to his leafy building and an adjacent lot he converted from a slum into an oasis of 2,000 trees.
He uses rainwater collected in cisterns to spray the trees so they can grow faster and absorb more pollutants. He's urging India's new government to require rainwater harvesting and to paint roofs, and buses, white. And he's pushing to build one of the world's largest energy-efficient office parks, complete with greenhouses.
Meattle hardly seems a firebrand. A soft-spoken grandfather, he's a scion of India's elite who attended school with Rajiv Gandhi and later earned a chemical engineering degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He sees his efforts, touted in a 2009 TED talk that's attracted more than two million views, as common sense.
"Sustainability is good business, and energy efficiency is low-hanging fruit," says Meattle, whose 25-year-old building was India's first to earn the top rating (in 2010) for a retrofit from the U.S. Green Building Council. He says it uses one-fifth as much energy per square meter as the average office building in India. At least 10 percent of its energy savings is due to plants, which obviate the need to pump in ambient air.
His horticulture is also a practical nod to ancient tradition. "Why did Buddha sit under the peepul [or bodhi] tree?" he asks, adding that the sacred fig with heart-shaped leaves releases oxygen even at night, allowing those beneath a light sleep.
Good Business—and a Health Imperative
As Meattle tells it, he really had no choice but to try something new. "My doctors told me to leave" India in 1992, he says, citing his reduced lung capacity because of the city's air pollution. He decided to stay, seeking instead to solve a society-wide problem that's become increasingly dire. (See related story: "In Climate Talks, Spotlight Turns to India.")
"Delhi's unfit for living between October and March," Meattle says, noting how often its air pollution veers into the "very unhealthy" or even "hazardous" category. The U.S. Embassy, which posts its air quality data on outdoor monitors, has issued warnings against letting kids play outside.
Smog envelops the landmark India Gate in New Delhi, the world's smoggiest city.
Photograph by Altaf Qadri, AP
In fact, New Delhi's smog is now nearly three times worse than Beijing's, the World Health Organization reported in May, based on measurements of fine particulates, or PM 2.5. The WHO found that the city had the world's dirtiest air, and the cities ranking second through fourth are also in India. (See related story: "What Step Is Crucial in Fighting Cities' Air Pollution?")
India's indoor air pollution is even worse, exacerbated by the use of wood stoves and by chemical emissions from appliances. The WHO estimates it's India's second biggest killer, after high blood pressure, and contributes to 1.3 million annual deaths. (See related story: "WHO Report: Indoor Air Pollution Is Greatest Environmental Health Risk.")
India's press has only recently begun to focus on the issue, but the people are still largely in denial, says Barun Aggarwal, director of the Paharpur Business Center's Breathe Easy program and Meattle's son-in-law.
"We are Indians. We have iron lungs," Aggarwal says is a common attitude, adding that many have adopted Nietzsche's "what-doesn't-kill-me-makes-me-stronger" mentality.
Meattle, after reviewing research by NASA and others, drew up a plan that focuses largely on three common houseplants because of their complementary abilities to detoxify indoor air and enrich it with oxygen: the areca palm, mother-in-law's tongue, and the money plant.
Before outside air is allowed indoors, his 50,000-square-foot facility uses a scrubber to wash it with water to reduce the levels of chemical compounds such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide. The air then passes through his greenhouse to remove formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide and through a filter to remove bacteria. No smoking is allowed inside.
Since January 2013, Meattle's company has created plant-based air-filtering systems for more than 700 homes in India's capital. It's also working to clean the air inside the embassy schools of the United States and Germany.
But Can Plants Really Clean the Air?
"It's a phenomenon that's growing now," says Bill C. Wolverton, one of the original NASA researchers and author of the 2010 book Plants: Why You Can't Live Without Them. Wolverton has been working in Japan, where plants have been used to make 50 to 60 "ecological gardens" in hospitals. He also says there's budding interest in South Korea and China.

NASA published several studies in the 1980′s showing interior plants could purify the air in sealed test chambers akin to a space station. It later tested the value of plants to both clean air and recycle waste in a tightly sealed building known as the Bio Home.
Subsequent studies have also suggested that plants could help clean indoor air. In 2009, via greenhouse tests, a Pennsylvania State University research team found plants could reduce indoor ozone, which can be emitted by copy machines and laser printers.
Not everyone is convinced. "I certainly would not rely on plants to clean indoor air...To get them to work, you'd need too many plants," says John Girman, former senior science adviser at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Indoor Air Division. He says a 1,500-square-foot house would need 680 plants to duplicate NASA-like benefits, and the result would be "an indoor jungle" with moisture problems.
Girman co-wrote a study criticizing research such as NASA's that tested plants only in sealed chambers, which don't replicate the actual conditions of buildings with ventilation systems that can bring in fresh outside air. He says increasing ventilation is far more effective than using plants to clean the air.
But what if the outdoor air is filthy? "I don't have a good solution for India," Girman says.
Meattle's building has been proved to alleviate health problems, according to a 2008 study by the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute and the Central Pollution Control Board. The study compared 94 nonsmokers working there with nonsmokers employed elsewhere in Delhi. It found the former had fewer cases of eye irritation, headaches, hypertension, and respiratory problems.
Another study raised questions. It said the building's indoor air quality is akin to that in the United States. "Given the extreme air pollution levels in the outdoor environment of New Delhi, this is an achievement," says the 2010 research co-authored by Joshua Apte, now an engineering professor at the University of Texas-Austin. It noted the "air-washer and filtration array" but said there's no "strong evidence" that the success is due to the greenery.
"We have an air treatment plant," Meattle says of his innovative combination of scrubbers, filters, and greenery. The result, he adds, is fewer employee sick days, greater productivity, and air as clean as that in Davos, Switzerland.

$AMFE Completes Multi-Year Audit and Submits for Uplist to OTCQB
Amfil Technologies Inc. Completes Multi-Year Audit and Submits for Uplist to OTCQB, Confirms 2017 Year End Revenues of $8,168,251 and Year Over Year Increase of +3500% Toronto, ON, (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — via NEWMEDIAWIRE — Amfil Technologies Inc. (OTC: AMFE) is pleased to announce that our company auditors, RBSM LLP, have completed and signed off on the multi-year audit of the company’s financial statements. The company has submitted the required information with the OTC Markets Exchange to up-list from OTC Pink to the OTCQB Venture Market. The company is hopeful that through continued advancement and expansion, a second up-list will occur to the OTCQX Exchange later this year. The audit completion and approval by RBSM LLP, provides third-party verification as to the accuracy of the company’s financial statements. The audit provides further evidence of the company’s success and exponential growth over the past two years and highlights the enormous growth potential soon to be realized. It is expected that the audit completion and subsequent tier up-list will provide an enhanced sense of confidence to our current and potential shareholders moving forward. Key adjustments in the audited statements include: · Audited revenues for fiscal 2017 now shows a total of $8,168,251, a difference to the upside of $1,637,278 compared to the unaudited statements previously filed showing $6,530,973. This was due to an inputting error that consolidated certain transactions using only the net revenues as opposed to both the gross and the net. · There was a reduction in Net Income due to a large game development profit being pushed into Q1 2018, as well as some Interloc-Kings Inc sales being written off. This resulted in an operating loss of $309,761. Legitimate arguments could have been made to retain the income on the financial statements, however, due to the additional time required to complete the adjustments to support the transactions, the company felt the cost would outweigh the benefits and would be immaterial to the company’s long-term success and shareholder value. The audited financial statements can be viewed here https://www.otcmarkets.com/stock/AMFE/disclosure The audit process took longer than originally anticipated due to the high volume of transactions over multiple subsidiaries and their related business divisions. We appreciate the support and confidence from our loyal shareholder base and we are excited to move forward with a number of positive growth initiatives to further increase shareholder value. The audit completion and upgrade to the OTCQB Venture Market will provide shareholders greater transparency, open the stock up to new market makers, and attract new larger private and institutional investors that were previously unable, or unwilling to invest in unaudited companies. Meeting/exceeding the increased compliance and informational requirements of the OTCQB Venture Market confirms and ensures the company’s commitment to transparency and should provide current and potential shareholders the utmost confidence in the information and disclosures provided by the company. The company has submitted the required documentation to OTC Markets to uplist to the OTCQB Venture Market and anticipates the uplist to be approved and completed in the coming weeks. Benefits of listing on the OTCQB Venture Market include: · Increased transparency for shareholders and the investment community · Free in-depth Level II stock quotes for investors · Potential for additional market makers (There is a fee to quote OTC Pink stocks. It is free for market makers to quote stocks listed on the OTCQB Venture Market) · Ability to reach a broader audience of retail and institutional investors who require potential investments to be audited and current with their reporting requirements. · Increased “visibility” through the various awareness platforms provided by the exchange, such as the OTCQB Podcast, Newsletter, Website, and Social Media Platforms. The company has worked out an agreement with OTC Markets where payments made to the exchange will be pro-rata and applied to the application and listing fees if/when a second uplist occurs this year to the OTCQX Best Market. Further, the completion of the audit and subsequent uplist will allow for the previously announced spinoff of the Interloc-Kings Inc. subsidiary. In conjunction with the spin-off, shareholders will be awarded with a special dividend in the newly formed entity based upon their holdings in Amfil Technologies Inc (AMFE). This initiative has been developed to fuel the growth for each subsidiary and will provide a well-deserved bonus to the shareholders who have held strong and supported us through this period of growth and development. Specific details relating to the spinoff, including the record-date, plans for the new entity, and awarded share ratios of the special dividend will be announced in a future press release. “It has been a long and arduous journey. I would like to thank our shareholders for their patience and support during this stage in the company’s development,” stated Roger Mortimer, CEO. “I was blessed to receive words of encouragement and support throughout the extended audit period which were of huge value. I would like to once again reaffirm my vow to do everything in my power to deliver increased value back to our loyal shareholders and ensure that the wait was well worth it!” The company continues to execute on a number of exciting initiatives. Further updates can be expected in the coming weeks as the company continues to accelerate forward with its growth and expansion strategy and deliver maximum value back to its shareholders. The EcoPr03 GRO3 Antimicrobial System was jointly developed between Amfil Tech and A.C.T.S. Inc. which recently rebranded its technology under Advanced Ozone Integration as an extension of the existing ozone technology being utilized in the food and beverage industry and integrated by A.C.T.S. into companies such as Pepsi, Nestle, Sysco, Sun Pacific and many others. The system is a triple-function sanitization unit capable of naturally eliminating 99.9% of water and airborne pathogens and the typically problematic pests that wreak havoc for cultivators (like aphids, whiteflies and spider mites), as well as bacteria, fungus, microbes and mold on surfaces, all without chemicals. The unit can also constantly regulate a given facility’s water supply, oxygenating the water and maintaining a consistent PPM infusion of ozone that prevents the formation of algae, bacteria or mold (allowing for comprehensive water recycling), simultaneously removing the need to use pesticides and/or dangerous, often carcinogenic products to treat production problems, as is common throughout the industry today. This environmentally-friendly solution also eliminates odors, while slightly reducing the air temperature, lowering energy consumption by the HEPA filtration and HVAC systems and could potentially allow for a facilities process to be labeled certified organic in the U.S.A. when the crop is no longer considered illegal on the federal level, otherwise “Clean Green” or “Certified Kind” in the meantime. The EcoPr03 GRO3 Antimicrobial System recently passed product review by a registered USDA certifying agent for use in California as well as Pennsylvania and surrounding states. The subsidiary has developed a strategic partnership with Roto Gro, the creator of proprietary rotary hydroponic technology. More information on this product line can be found on the http://www.gro3systems.comwebsite or on twitter @GRO3Systems. 3). Interloc-Kings Inc. is a hardscape construction company servicing the Greater Toronto Area. This subsidiary is an authorized Unilock installer, Unilock being, North America’s premier manufacturer of concrete interlocking paving stones and segmental wall products. [The six Hultquist children discovered that on Saturday mornings, before their parents were up, they could crawl through the Television right into the program they were watching! Ahem, although they had not tired it out on cartoons]
IT WAS A BRIGHT AND CRISP SEPTEMBER MORNING, A SATURDAY, IN FACT,
which meant plenty of cartoons at the Hultquist residence. Draped over a floral sofa and plush chairs like fresh washing laid out to dry were six children of varying shapes and sizes: Cathy, the eldest, the one in charge whenever their parents were missing, followed by Kurt, Karen, Kristi, Craig & Clark.
Saturday morning before their parents woke up was the time of week when the earth shifted on its axis, when the cartoon universe ruled for hours.
Naturally, early in the morning in front of the idiot box, after countless bowls of sugary cereal, it was all too easy to slip into a semiconscious state. But when a barrage of senseless commercials interrupt a Tom & Jerry cartoon, Karen jumps up to flip the channel.
 FLIP . . . nothing . . . FLIP . . . nothing . . . FLIP . . .nothing . . . FLIP ---
OH GOOD, THE ROADRUNNER AND THE COYOTE!
On that huge TV screen, glorious hues of orange, tan and green cast an alluring view of the southwest desert. Crested buttes towering high over vast fields of tall cactus. Overhead, a sparkling blue sky.
Once again, the coyote had sent out to Acme Inc. for another Roadrunner catching contraption, causing everyone to perk up a bit.
Kristi said, "I feel sorry for the coyote. He's always getting the bad end of the stick."
With an impish smile, Karen turns to Kristi, and says, "Do you want to help him out?"
Craig was feeling kind of peckish, wondering how a fried Roadrunner leg would taste. After all, he'd only consumed three bowls of Lucky Charms. "Why not!" he blurted out.
Suddenly Clark sat up. "Do you think we can? I mean, it IS a cartoon."
"It might be wise for only one of us to go in, just to be on the safe side," Cathy said, her maternal instincts switching into gear.
Kurt frowned. "Don't you think it should be, "All for one and one for all?"
They all jumped up and shouted, "ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL!"
From the point of view inside the TV, a finger tentatively poked through a hazy electronic curtain, which like a bulging sheet of rubber, seemed somewhat reluctant to give way. Then appeared Karen's arm and head, breaking through a diamond haze of electrons --- and then suddenly, just like that, she was on the other side!
Like a string of babies from the womb, five more children plopped through, rolling around on the sand.
"WOW!" Kurt exclaimed, feeling the scorching desert wind. "It sure is hot!"
And then, all at once, they all noticed the same thing . . . how their clothes and skin had acquired an airbrushed look, no wrinkles, no lines, no moles,
 THEY WERE ALL CARTOON CHARACTERS!!!
 Everyone grins
Craig heard it first, a BEEP-BEEP in the distance that could only mean one thing. . .
 The Roadrunner!
Against the far horizon, between sheer rock cliffs, appeared a tiny plume of smoke, snaking along a winding 2-lane road, slowly getting larger and larger --- sounding something like a sound of a bullet. Suddenly it came to an abrupt halt. Silence. In the middle of the road, with the patience of a monk, the Roadrunner calmly observed the children.
Just as Kurt ventures a "Good morning," to the bird, atop a overhanging cliff, a large boulder connected to a mighty rubber band teetered precariously. Loitering on the edge for a few seconds as if deciding on which way to go. . . before finally dropping. . . .
. . . . just missing the Roadrunner, who had switched into overdrive the second it heard the sound of the huge rock whistling through the air. . .
"Thpttt, Thpttt," went it's red tongue, as it shot off toward the horizon like a meteor.
 WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSHHH!
 "BEEP-BEEP!"
Looking down from atop the cliff, Wile Coyote snapped his long slender fingers in disgust, not noticing that the rubber-banded boulder was heading back up in the air, now over his head, and then with a frown he finally saw it when it was a bit too late. . .
 Crushed flat as a pancake.
Cathy gazed at her brothers and sisters, and with a concerned look in her eye, she says, "Do you think he can hurt us?"
"Duhhh," Kurt replied. "Helloooo. . .we're inside a cartoon!"
"Yeah," Kristi affirmed. "I've yet to see one fatality in a Tom & Jerry cartoon."
As if to accentuate the point, Clark picked up a huge boulder as if it weighed nothing and proceeded to smash the head of his older brother, who was crushed flat as a pancake.
A few seconds later, a muffled plop revealed a hand reaching out of the rubbery flattened substance that had been his body, which reaches down and grabs the rubber and then with great force suddenly pulled it up. Like an accordion, Craig suddenly regained his true shape and form.
"Hey!" he shouted, "that was fun!"
As he and his brother proceeded to take turns smashing each other into pancakes, a storm of laughter erupts from their brother and sisters, that is, until Wile Coyote steps into view.
Stillness descends on the group. Laughter died away as quick as it started as Wile surveys a semicircle of pink faces.
Always quick to take the bull by the horns, Karen scuttled over to the coyote, putting her arm around his bony shoulders. "Wile," she says, "I think you need a better plan."
Back in Wile's cave, the kids watch Karen and the coyote thumb through the thick catalog of Acme Road Runner catching contraptions, Karen humming the theme song from Love boat.
Her face lit up when she saw a powerful BMW 1200 motorcycle with a sidecar. No more than 60 seconds later, the Acme delivery truck drops off a huge box in front of the cave.
After all, they were in a cartoon!
Karen hopped on the huge motorcycle after unboxing it. The coyote gleefully taking his place in the sidecar.
Cathy's worried expression said it all: "Please be careful!"
When Kristi made the point that Karen had never actually ridden a motorcycle, the coyote's eyes got big as saucers. "Hey, we're in a cartoon," Karen calmly replied as she placed her right hand on the hand grip of the accelerator.
 "I don't need a freaking driver's license!"
The immense roar of the engine drowning out Craig & Clark's urgent pleas to take them along.
Then, out of the distance, moving at least 90 miles per hour, a tiny speck appears in the distance, at the head of a long plume of smoke.
Karen looking back over her shoulder, timing her take-off --- and then the big bike suddenly surges forward, the coyote's eyes bulging out of their sockets.
 "WHOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!"
In a fiery chaos, the wind spinning Karen's hair, streaming behind her in long streaking waves of brown and blond. After racing around a few turns, nearly popping that poor coyote out of the sidecar, the Roadrunner suddenly darts off the road, leaving Karen with no choice but to follow.
Bouncing through a boulder-strewn field, she suddenly veers between a series of huge rocks, not seeing the edge of that dried out creek bed until it was too late --- flying through the air --- a huge boulder on the other side of the bed that got them, which Karen did not observe until in mid-flight.
Catching the motorcycle squarely and sending Karen and the coyote shooting through the air like cruise missiles. . .
 Straight at the Roadrunner!
But just as they both reach out to snag that dang bird, the Roadrunner disappears in an abandoned coal tunnel at the base of the cliff, reaching back just as fast to zip the opening shut right behind it . . .
 ZIPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!
"Thpttt, Thpttt," went its tongue. . .leaving Karen and the coyote on a direct path for the base of the cliff. . .
Flattening as two dark circles on the rock wall, hanging for a second and then slowly whispering down to the earth.
 LATER:
Craig's forefinger running down through the numerous selections in the Acme catalog with the precision of a surgeon, Clark's hazel eyes following like lasers. Suddenly the finger stops. Tapping his finger on the page, he glanced at his brother.
"A robot," he says with a gleam in his eyes.
"That's the ticket," says Clark, visualizing a dramatic chase scene.
Ten seconds later, an Acme delivery van screeches to a halt in front of the cave. A long box is pushed inside.
"Ladies and gentleman," Craig intones after opening the box, "I give you the XL-2000, more commonly known to movie fans as Robbie the Robot!
There was a humming sound, a few colored lights on the robot's chest begin to blink. The neck moves, pincer-like arms rotate, opened and close; the bottom tread then moving forward and back. Two green lights glowing from within its clear plastic helmet. A faint whiff of ozone lilts in the air.
Suddenly the tin can says, "Robbie the Robot, reporting for duty."
Craig & Clark cracking their knuckles in delight.
A lavender sky greets the boys as they step out into the desert sun. The robot, unable to bend over, simply smashes through the wall, emerging out of a cloud of dust.
When Craig shouts, "ROBOT, STOP!" The tin man ceases to move, much to the amazement of the girls.
Clark commands, "Robot, what are your directives?"
After the whirring and buzzing cease inside that metallic tin can, a mechanized voice precisely states, "Reviewing primary directives: One --- preserve Hultquists at all costs; Two --- maintain a pleasant atmosphere for Craig and Clark (they both grin); Three --- catch Roadrunner."
A yellow sun casting an even glow on that red and tan desert. Exactly in the middle of the road stood the robot, patiently awaiting its prey. Then, in the distance, a faraway sigh of wind could be heard, steadily increasing in intensity until reaching the sound of a bullet. . .
 "POOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW!!!!
The Roadrunner now standing right next to the robot. . .
The feisty bird eyeballs the metallic man, its red tongue darting out of its beak,
 "Thptt, thptt . . . BEEP, BEEP!!!"
The Roadrunner rockets into a narrow canyon, and almost as quick, the robot gives chase, but not before Craig and Clark jump onto its back!
 WHOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
FOR CRAIG AND CLARK, WHO WERE BARELY HANGING ONTO THE BACK OF A ROCKETING ROBOT, the steep canyon walls were nothing more than an orange blur. . .
But they were GAINING on that bird!
The crafty Roadrunner began weaving back and forth across the narrow road in the hope of buying time, two-lanes of asphalt bounded by dense scrub brush and cactus --- not to mention those two-hundred foot high cliffs --- no escape was possible.
 Suddenly the bird stops.
In a deafening squeal of rubber and orange sparks, the robot began braking, now going into an out-of-control sideways skid, Craig and Clark barely holding on like two limp rags.
The underbrush on either side of the road marking off a bewildering labyrinth of alleys, one barely wider than the others, and it was there that the bird darts, suddenly heading out into the desert. . .
 "THPTTT, THPTTT . . . BEEP, BEEP!"
"ROBOT!" Craig commanded, "GET THAT BIRD!!!"
The robot resumes chase, a dense cloud of dust and debris billowing behind the double-wide track, as it careens wildly across the loose sand.
RIDING ON THE BACK OF A SPEEDING ROBOT, THE GROUND SKIMMING BY AS THOUGH DRIVING A VERY FAST CAR, CRAIG AND CLARK FELT A SUDDEN UNEASINESS. . . .
Disquieting thoughts of sharp cactus needles lodging deep in their rear ends caused them to cling to the rolling tin can like baby possums to its mother.
Swerving like an out of control tractor-trailer, an aluminum monolith on oiled wheels, darkened shapes pass by in a hazy blur --- as though viewing the world through a kaleidoscope --- a helter-skelter of crazy images superimposed upon one another.
The Roadrunner darts through the brush, and then, without warning, suddenly shoots off to the right, through a dried out arroyo creasing the wall of the canyon. The robot duly following. What the boys and robot did not know, was that the path led directly to a sheer drop. . .
Clark shouts in delight --- they were going to trap that damned bird. They'd have squab for dinner!
When Craig yelled out, "ROBOT, ELECTRON GUN!" Clark immediately shouted, "NOT THAT! We don't want to fry it!" But it was too late --- twin beams of energy out of the chest of the robot laser toward the bird, exploding boulders and cactus on either side of it into dust.
 WHAMMMMMMMMM!!
WHAMMMMMMMMM!!
And the robot, as if angered by missing its target, lurches ahead with an startling rapidity.
Here the local knowledge of that crafty bird served it well, waiting till the very last second to hit the brakes and then darting off to the right, onto a narrow rock ledge running alongside a sheer cliff wall.
When Clark shouted "JUMP!" he and his brother both leap to either side of the speeding robot, who was going much too fast to apply the brakes successfully.
"HELLS BELLS!!!" shouts the robot as it catapults off into space, hanging for a second in the air as its arms circle wildly, and then disappearing down into a bottomless chasm.
 LATER:
Cathy was sitting in Wile's cave, thoughtfully thumbing through the Acme catalog. Suddenly her finger stops on the page with jet-powered roller skates. She remembered going one mile an hour on the driveway at when she was eight. When Kurt reminded her of the debacle that happened in Episode 38, when the coyote had tried them and ended up smashing himself into smithereens, she quickly turns the page.
Next her finger stops on a hot-air balloon and an anvil, her anxious gaze shifting to Karen.
"Nope!" Karen emphatically states, "In Episode 55 the balloon gets punctured and he's blown into a lake."
The coyote sadly nodding his head.
As Cathy gazes at the catalog in despair, Craig and Clark finally stumble in. Her traveling gaze beating her laughter by a good three seconds.
 "WOW!" she ejaculates. "What happened?"
After they finished telling her the story, she assisted them in the delicate operation of pulling the last cactus needles out of their tender behinds.
The hole the robot had blasted out of the cave wall had been nicely tidied up. And despite the coyote's mild protests, his wrinkled puss set in a fierce frown, Kristi had added some potted plants, Karen a beautiful bouquet of desert flowers.
The clever animal had conceded one point to those humans, however, whenever women were involved, he always dressed up. Now striding around his lair wearing an ancient smoking jacket of crushed red velvet while smoking a fine cigar, a large snifter of cognac cupped in one hairy palm.
Outside a hole that served as a window, one could see a lonely two-lane road unwinding toward the distance like a used typewriter ribbon between precipitous cliffs. Along one side of the cave wall sat an iron cot covered by an old army blanket. A chest of drawers topped by a clouded mirror with spidery cracks. Perhaps that fetid smell, a compound of dirt, moisture and wet animal hair, had prompted the girls somewhat rapid bout of spring cleaning.
Cathy said to the boys, "I've been perusing the Acme catalog while you two were gone."
Clark blurting out, "I guess that means you thought we wouldn't catch it!"
Cathy ignoring his statement with the diplomacy of a good housewife. Tapping a red fingernail on the table, she resumes flipping through the pages. Then she suddenly stops, staring intently at a picture of a Japanese Zero fighter.
 She'd always yearned to fly.
Ten minutes later, a huge flatbed semi tractor-trailer squeals to a halt. Two efficient Acme employees quickly offload the plane, the clear cockpit reflecting a diamond star-burst of the sun.
First, Cathy inspects for flaws. Kicking the wheels, checking tire pressure. She bent down to see if the huge black net she had ordered was in place on the undercarriage. The plan: swoop down low in a strafing attack and release the net, which was weighted with little pieces of lead.
Craig let go his breath in a long soundless sigh. "WOW!" he says with wonder. "I wish I'd thought of that!"
Clark jerked his thumb toward the aircraft. "Do you really think you can fly that thing?"
Cathy, who was busy donning a leather helmet, goggles, scarf and gloves, merely smiled, thinking, "Of course I can, silly. This is a cartoon, isn't it?"
She leaps onto the back of the wing, at the point where it met the fuselage. Then she placed a hand on the bottom of the cockpit, found a toe-hold and pulled herself up into place.
"OOOMPH!!" she says while plopping down on an uncushioned seat.
Orienting herself with the controls, her traveling gaze took in the yoke, the pedals and the throttle. She experiments with the pedals, pushing down on the one on the left, watched an aileron flap up and down. After doing the same thing with the one on the right, she then rattles the stick to check out the flaps.
Satisfied with her checkout, she nods to Kurt, who'd stationed himself next to the propeller. Smiling faintly, she gave him the thumbs up. Her brother carefully grabbed the propeller and then jerked it hard as he could toward the ground.
The crescendoing roar of the engine causing her siblings to take a step or two back as they listen to the ferocious high-pitched shriek, a snarling yowl now under maximum boost. Puffs of black exhaust shot out of twin mufflers like machine gun bullets.
The Zero shooting into the sky towards a blood red sun.
But the sound also drowned out the approach of the Roadrunner, who'd swooped under the aircraft in a fantastic burst of speed.
Heading into the wind, Cathy rose above the vertical canyon walls and leveled off, giving the plane all the throttle it could handle, the thin whine of air over the wings gradually increasing in intensity. She shot into a cloud bank, felt its damp coolness on her face. Experimenting with the controls, she banked, veering in a one-eighty, heading back the way she came. The plane seemed to fly itself --- everything seemed so easy!
She got so cocky, in fact, that after zooming back toward the ground and leveling off, she turned bottoms up and stunt-flew the highway, saluting her brothers and sisters.
Rising back in the air, she began searching for the Roadrunner, seeing it almost in an instant. There, down on a needle thin strip of road, she could make out a billowing dust cloud trailing the bird.
This was it! A live run!!!
She pushed the controls forward and swooped down between cliffs framed in steep perspective by the windscreen, needles spinning crazily. The earth seemed to leap at the plane. Only twenty-five feet above the road, with the altimeter as close to zero as it could get, she finally recovered balance. . .
The bird was dead in her sights!
Closing distance gradually, just as she was about to release the net, that unpredictable animal changed to squirrel-cage antics, began swerving back and forth across the blacktop.
Cathy leaned forward in the same way a child does on a rolling toy, hoping to gain momentum. . .
Cathy hunched forward in her seat as the valley floor rushed by beneath her --- soon the moment of truth! She transferred one hand from the yoke to the release handle for the net, clutching it fiercely.
Like some great Pterodactyl out of the far-flung past, the plane swooped, going over on its nose and shooting downward in a screaming vertical dive. . . nearly hitting 270 MPH . . . wings shrieking and moaning under the strain.
Hemmed in by those sheer rock walls, concentrating so intently on the speedy bird, she did not notice the tight bottleneck up ahead --- sheer cliffs creeping ever closer and closer, until at last, a wing-tip made contact.
The little craft bucked and shuddered from the impact.
Cathy stood the aircraft up on its left wing in a futile effort to turn around . . . but she'd lost way too much speed . . . stalling and pointing toward the earth in a grotesque slow-motion spin.
 SPPPPLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTT!!!
"Thpttt, Thpttt," went the red tongue of the Roadrunner as it shot into the distance. . .
 WHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHH!!!
 "BEEP-BEEP!!!"
The long walk back seemed to take an eternity, and it was as pancake woman, ten feet wide and a half inch thick, that Cathy returned to her brothers and sisters, a very thin circle embedded with a fine black netting.
Everyone threw their hands in the air and laughed. . .
CATHY'S MISTAKE, KURT THOUGHT, while thumbing through the thick Acme catalog, was selecting an aircraft which could not turn fast enough. Suddenly his finger stopped. His eyes got big as he took in the APACHE WARRIOR, the latest breed of attack helicopter.
That baby was bristling with gadgetry!
 *Infrared thermal imaging
*High-speed processor for multi-target tracking
*Laser-guided weaponry
*Night-Vision telescopic viewing system
Naturally, there were plenty of options, the most desirable being a 64-oz cup holder.
When he finally tore his gaze away from the catalog, Karen said, "Well, have you finally made a decision?"
At that moment, outside the cave, the Acme flatbed truck screeched to a stop. Not more than five minutes later, after a cursory glance at the thick manual, Kurt buckled in after donning a helmet with a swiveling ocular sight. A powerful engine shrieked to life.
The sagging rotors began flattening out in a blur. He gave his siblings the Thumbs Up while climbing into the sky. The chopper tipped forward just as the Roadrunner sped by underneath. . .
 WHOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSHHHHHHHHH!!
The bubble window gave off a spectacular view of the desert landscape careening by not so far below. Brushing cactus tops, skimming across fields of scrub brush, the craft tore over the earth.
Flying on a direct course toward his target, Kurt bore down like a bird of prey, slowly closing the gap . . . a quarter-mile . . . two-hundred yards . . . one-hundred yards . . . until finally right behind the bird. Fifty feet below, the sand churned wildly, whipped into a frenzy by the copters vacuum wake.
Punching the computer screen, he activated a 360-degree ring of cameras dangling underneath the cockpit. On the screen flashed a picture of the bird, and underneath its classification,
 Geococcyx Californianus, Speed-Ophoric Maximus
And underneath that, an asterisk --- VERY, VERY HARD TO CATCH!!!
The copter swooped, a thundering of rotors as it banked and aligned itself. A pencil-thin beam of red light slanted from beneath the copter, a shimmering blade targeting a feisty bird with two huge drumsticks. But at the last second, sensing a threat was near, the Roadrunner finally shifted into top gear.
 WWHHHHOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!
Kurt lifted the protective plastic casing off the toggle for the HELLFIRE MISSILE, and while making a quick course correction, calmly flipped the switch. A brilliant white flash of white followed by an exploding boulder, shattering into a million pieces. The concussion wave sent the bird reeling in a series of cartwheels. . .
 The sound, apocalyptic.
But the Roadrunner recovered quite nicely, quickly resuming top speed. Kurt maintained a low heading over fields of cactus, rock and scrub, a thermal scanner revealing the midsection of the bird as bright orange, fading in hue toward the feathers.
But technology vacillates between being a tool and a trap for the unwary. The stone arch which the bird ran through led directly to a five-thousand year old tree, a Bristle-cone Pine with some very pointy limbs.
When Kurt finally looked up from the instrument panel, his jaw nearly hit the floor. Inside the rounded cockpit dome, a thin silhouette leaned back in his seat while realizing his vast mistake. . .drawing a deep breath and shouting,
 "SSHHHHHHHHIIIIIITTTTTTTTT!!!!!!"
When he finally got back to his brothers and sisters he asked for assistance in pulling the limb out of his backside. . .
AT THE BOTTOM OF A STEEP CANYON WALL, STILL AS A BRILLIANT WATERCOLOR, RISING HUNDREDS OF FEET HIGH, overarching a clear blue sky, Wile's cave was weathered brown and tan, and, to be frank, in a very sad state of disrepair. At the moment, Cathy was busy sweeping a dusty floor with a broom she'd fashioned from some fronds tied to a tree limb, thinking,
"That robot certainly made a mess!"
Craig & Clark, tanned and alert little boys, were taking turns arm-wrestling the coyote. Karen was whistling the theme song from LOVE BOAT while making coffee in a battered tin pot hanging over a small fire. Kurt kept himself busy thumbing through Wile's collection of PLAYWOLF Magazine. Kristi perused the Acme Catalog while ruminating on possibilities.
Suddenly a flashbulb popped in her head. . . A Time Machine!
Because they were all inside a cartoon, their ultimate fate would always be subject to the whims of cartoonists. And since cartoonists enjoyed cushy jobs, they always took great pains to make the Roadrunner the ultimate winner. But in a Time Machine she could travel back to Burbank Studios in California, where cartoonists played god while drawing painted cells. She smiled at the thought of a confrontation --- a big gun pointed at their heads as they reluctantly drew the demise of one of the most popular cartoon characters ever.
She began flipping through the pages, searching for a Time Machine, imagining the sequence of events: breaking into a locked building, alarms erupting as she broke through a system of laser beams, flickering over her inquisitively as if she were an item of meat in a check-out line, diving for cover behind a desk as an overweight security guard waddled by, her head pushing out from under the desk like a turtle from its carapace.
 ALL CLEAR!!!
And then she was actually there, taking a .44 Magnum out of her clutch purse, checking to see if the safety was off, then pushing herself to her feet. Lucky for her, a sign on the wall pointed the way to the cartoonists. She eyeballed the ventilation system, imagining a lurid scene where she crawled through constricting duct work, popping the end open and then dropping to the floor like the creature from ALIEN.
Then she reconsidered --- that would mean dodging giant dust balls and annoying insects. So she continued her journey, ducking and weaving down a long corridor. Then she finally realized the futility for stealth. In room after room after room, absolutely nothing was being done. . .
After all, this was the Graphics Department!
Instead of typing, secretaries were tossing wadded up sheets of paper at a mini-basketball net over a trashcan. Some supervisors were keeping score while others were chasing little cuties.
Deep in the bowels of the building, the pebbly surface of frosted glass in the door leading to the lair of the cartoonists did its part to shield her. Trying the knob, she found it to be unlocked. She went into an alert crouch, cracking open the door and then peering inside. . .all clear!
After taking a deep breath, almost in one motion, she opened the door and dove inside, tucking in a tight little ball and somersaulting across the floor toward the snack machine.
Three men, steely-eyed creatures with pointy little heads, who up to that moment had been busy gossiping, suddenly looked up.
"WHO THE HELL ARE YOU!" One shouted.
Kristi leaped to her feet, and holding her gun at arm's length, said, "I'm your worst nightmare."
Stunned, the wide-eyed men stared at her in mute horror, as it was frighteningly close to their lunch break.
"It's time to get to business," Kristi said. "I want you to draw this. . ." She threw a balled up sheet of paper at the cartoonists. "And to make sure you actually do it," she went on, "I'm going to take the precaution of holding your snack machine and coffee-maker as hostages.'
She grinned with satisfaction as their eyes rolled back in their sockets.
LATER LATER LATER LATER LATER LATER
There was something comedic about the scene, Cathy taking another big chomp on a huge drumstick, not bothering to close her mouth as she chewed. She said, "Kristi, tell us again how you caught the bird."
"Well," Kristi replied, after wiping her chin with the sleeve of her blouse, "After those silly cartoonists finally saw things my way, they drew it like this. . .
"As I was traveling back to the cartoon, I realized I could use the Time Machine to go to a point in time exactly when and where the bird would pass a certain spot of landscape. Then, with a hologram-maker I got from the good people at Acme products, I proceeded to set a trap. What looked to be a clear road was actually a Vietnamese Tiger Trap . . . a deep, spiked pit."
 "QED --- end of Roadrunner."
A light shined in Craig's eyes as he looked up from his plate, a huge grin on his "Dat one fine bird!" he said.
Wile leaned back from the table, and with a contented look on his puss, he burps.
