Happy Anniversary of the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup, France.  On this date in 1942, the Nazi-led Operation Spring Breeze was undertaken, with assistance from French police, wherein some 13,000 Jews, Communists, and other undesirables were rounded up, incarcerated, and subsequently shipped off to Auschwitz to their deaths.

Témoignage d’une rescapée de la Shoah - Rav Dynovisz

Il y a 79 ans, les 16 et 17 juillet 1942 a eu lieu la “ Rafle du Vel’ d’Hiv’ “ qui est la plus grande arrestation massive de Juifs réalisée en France pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Plus de treize mille personnes, dont près d'un tiers d'enfants, sont arrêtées avant d'être détenues au vélodrome d'hiver (mais aussi dans d'autres camps), dans des conditions d'hygiène déplorables et presque sans eau ni nourriture pendant cinq jours. Ils sont ensuite envoyés par trains de la mort vers le camp d'extermination d'Auschwitz. 

Moins d'une centaine d'adultes en reviendront (et aucun enfant).

À la demande du Troisième Reich, dans le cadre de sa politique d'extermination des populations juives d'Europe, l'État français organise, en juillet 1942, une rafle à grande échelle de Juifs (l'« opération Vent printanier », parallèlement menée par les nazis dans plusieurs pays européens). 

Ces arrestations sont menées avec le concours de neuf mille policiers et gendarmes français, sur ordre du gouvernement de Vichy, après des négociations avec l'occupant menées par René Bousquet, secrétaire général de la Police nationale. 

À la suite de ces négociations, entamées par Pierre Laval, les Juifs de nationalité française sont temporairement exclus de cette rafle qui concerne essentiellement les Juifs étrangers, ou apatrides, ou déchus de la nationalité française par la loi du 22 juillet 1940, ou encore ceux ayant le statut de réfugié, dont plus de quatre mille enfants, le plus souvent français nés de parents étrangers, à l'initiative du gouvernement de Vichy alors que les Allemands n’avaient demandé que les Juifs de plus de 16 ans.

Il faut attendre 1995 pour qu'un président de la République, Jacques Chirac, reconnaisse, lors d'un discours prononcé devant le monument commémoratif, la responsabilité de la France dans cette rafle, et plus généralement dans la persécution et la déportation des Juifs pendant l'Occupation.

Voilà l'printemps !

Quelques derniers soubresauts de l'hiver avant d'entrer dans le printemps 2018, frisquet avec les vents du Nord Est dans la journée mais le bon temps pointe déjà le bout de son nez, jonquilles, narcisses et crocus mènent le bal ! Déjà, les premiers bourgeons apparaissent sur les hortensias et forcément ça redonne le moral après un long hiver.

Et sur le plan économique, on nous le claironne tous les jours, la reprise est là. On scrute l'horizon et les relevés de compte, les statistiques du nombre de demandeurs d'emploi, le niveau de pauvreté… Anne, ma sœur Anne… ?

Enfin, surgit dans le cœur des difficultés du moment le classement du magazine américain Forbes des milliardaires du monde. On retrouve sur le podium 2018, sur les 3 premières marches, Jeff Bezos, groupe Amazon, avec 112 milliards de dollars, Bill Gates (Microsoft) avec 90 milliards et Warren Buffet, de Berkshire Hathaway, précisons d'emblée que M. Buffet n'a aucun lien de parenté avec Marie-George, députée de Seine Saint-Denis ! Il se contente, lui, de 84 milliards.

Et les Français là-dedans ? Attendez, c'est là où le printemps montre aussi le bout de son nez. En quatrième position pour ce classement mondial, c'est historique, apparaît notre ami Bernard Arnault, groupe LVMH, avec 72.2 milliards de dollars. Quelle fierté pour la France !

Eh oui, les milliardaires, ils « pètent » la forme, tant pis pour ceux qui suivent. Et attendez, ce n'est pas fini, M. Macron, le libéral pragmatique, vient seulement de supprimer l'ISF, M. Arnault finira bien avec ça par monter sur le podium afin de ne pas rester au pied, la quatrième place, « la place du con » comme disent les athlètes des J.O.

Autre souffle printanier, la semaine dernière, en regardant une émission, C dans l'air, avec sur le plateau l'excellent François Lenglet, le thème du jour : « les milliardaires, les nouveaux maîtres du monde ». M. Lenglet nous explique doctement et avec une once de dépit : « la croissance économique de la planète a été de 4% en 2017, celle des profits du capital de 18%. Il y a une déconnexion complète entre la croissance économique réelle et la croissance financière. Il y a eu, en fait, un souffle extraordinaire, dans le cadre de la lutte anti-crise après 2008, les banques centrales comme la BCE ont injecté des centaines de milliards dans les circuits financiers et les premiers servis ont été les milliardaires dans le cadre de la gigantesque opération de sauvetage de l'économie. Les milliardaires se sont positionnés devant les robinets et ont tendu leurs gobelets… ».

Les autres attendent encore le ruissellement. Avec les couvercles étanches, les tuyauteries, l'évaporation vers les paradis fiscaux, on peut attendre longtemps. En attendant, c'est le printemps !

France Condemns Holocaust and Antisemitic Past

Few people are aware of the involvement of the French Vichy State in the Holocaust during WW II. Yet, as the excerpt below from an excellent article by Michael Curtis shows, they were tainted to say the very least: The recent french film, "Sarah's Key," released in 2010, and based on the novel by Tatiana de Rosnay, portrayed accurately the willing participation during World War II of the French Vichy State, its authorities and police in facilitating the Holocaust. The book and the film presented a harrowing picture of the single darkest chapter in the infamous treatment of Jews in France during the World War II: La Rafle (The Raid), the round up euphemistically code-named.  Operation Spring Breeze (Opération Vent Printanier), which took place on July 16-17, 1942.  During those two days the French police, acting on the basis of lists they themselves had drawn up, arrested 13,152 Jewish men, women, and children living in Paris. Childless couples and single people were interned in Drancy, a suburb of Paris, which was equipped with watchtowers and barbed wire fences, and which served during the war as a transit point for the deportation of more than 67,000 Jews to their death.  In view of a recent poll that revealed that 42% of French people today did not know of Vel d'Hiv event, nor did 60% of the youth between the ages of 18 to 24, his words should be heeded. In view of the availability of the novel Sarah's Key, and the film based on it, the forthright speeches of two French presidents, and several TV documentaries on the France during World War II, it is surprising that such a large proportion of the French population confessed to be unaware of the Vel d'hiv atrocity.  It is disconcerting to read the results of a survey by the IPO in March 2012 of the degree of antisemitism in ten European countries. In response to the question if "Jews still talk too much of about happened to them in the Holocaust," the positive answer ranged from 63% in Hungary and 53% in Poland to 24% in Britain.  The uniqueness of the Holocaust and the evils associated with it cannot be forgotten.  One should reject the argument that "too much attention to the Holocaust would cause political problems."  One should expose and refute those such as Pat Buchanan, who in his article spoke of the "so-called Holocaust survivor syndrome, group fantasies of martyrdom and heroics."  François Hollande has shown the right way to deal with revisionism of this kind. This involves two things.  One is to highlight the singularity of the Holocaust, the attempt to eliminate all the Jews on the European continent. The other is to seek to control the virus of antisemitism, regrettably still active in France as elsewhere, and to unmask and discredit those who manifest the intolerance and fanaticism induced by it.  No future political leader fifty years from now will then have to apologize, as President Hollande has nobly done, for past acts of "blindness, stupidity, lies, and hatred."  Corrie Ten Boom knew first hand how one’s own government could turn against the Jews. In fact, statistics show that while there were no extermination camps in the Netherlands, the percentage of Jews from the Netherlands murdered by the Germans during WW II was higher than any other Western European Country. We, like Corrie, can be heroes in our way by, like her family, praying for the peace of Jerusalem as we are advised in Ps. 122:6.  The Ten Booms did just that for 100 years prior to WW II, and when the time came they took the next step and directly helped the Jews. They were, truly, WW II heroes!
