Prompt: Tender Warnings: None.

Out of all the places in Hisui, the Alabaster Icelands had to be the absolute worst. Colder than any winter they had experienced back in modern times, Riley always returned to Jubilife Village freezing, no matter how much they bundled up. Heading back towards their residence, Riley finds Ingo waiting by their door, waving them down. “Riley,” several of the townsfolk jump at his booming voice, but Riley smiles, already feeling a little less miserable and a little more at home, “I see you’ve had a safe journey from the Alabaster Icelands! How was your quest to continue you with your cataloging of the Pokemon?”

“So-so, Didn’t find as much as I would like,” Ingo gives them a sympathetic look as they open the door, “But I’m sure I’ll find them. Wanna come in for coffee?”

“I would appreciate some coffee, but-,” He gives them a pointed look towards their hands, “you are shaking, and we should-.”

“Just cold,” They tease, sliding one of their gloves off and pressing the back of their right hand to his cheek, “See? Takes me a while to shake off the freeze from the icelands.”

His silver eyes widen slightly at the contact before taking their hand in his warm one, his touch incredibly tender and warm. “We should hurry inside and get you warmed up to avoid any potential injuries,” Ingo states, pulling them into their residence all while holding onto their hand. Ingo’ll find no complaint from Riley, especially if he’s the one helping them to warm up.

Author's Note: Okay, I hope this makes sense as it takes place in Legends Arceus, and before these two are in a relationship. If anything sounds awkward or unclear, just let me know.

Riley finally needed to admit it: they were sick. Guess running around in the Coronet Highlands during a rainstorm yesterday was a really dumb idea. Wasn’t the first time they made a stupid decision. And it definitely wouldn’t be the last time. They cough, their Garchomp, Chompers, eying them warily. “Oh please, like you’ll catch this.” Riley winces, their already sore throat hurting from speaking.

Chompers snorts, shuffling away from them with a wary look in her eyes. Riley rolls their eyes. “Come on. We’ll head back to the Mountain Camp; we’re not far.” Getting up from the tree they were sitting under, Riley lets out a low groan of protest, their muscles sore and achy. Stepping forward, Riley stumbles, nearly crashing to the ground. Oh no, not good. Out of the corner of their eye, Riley catches Chompers, shaking her head at her human’s stubborn foolishness. They could call one Wyrdeer for a ride, but it would take Wyrdeer a while to arrive, and Riley just wanted to get back to camp to sleep. Biting back a sarcastic remark, Riley starts their slow journey back to camp, one shaky footstep at a time. The wind blows, a shiver running over them.

“RILEY!” Of all the people in this Arceus-forsaken land, it had to be him. It had to be Ingo. Riley nearly wanted to laugh in frustration. It’s not that Riley didn’t want to be around Ingo; They always wanted to be around him. Becoming friends with Ingo and Emmet had been one of the few good decisions in Riley’s life. But it was difficult when he couldn’t remember Riley the way they remember him. It hurt in the worst way possible, something Riley didn’t think could happen. They just wanted their best friend back; They just wanted the man they lov-. No, those thoughts wouldn’t help. Riley would find Arceus and make things right or die trying. They owed Ingo that much.

“Warden Ingo,” Riley turns slowly, trying to not look like they were two seconds from collapsing on the ground, “uh, how are you?”

Ingo’s smile falters, the familiar frown on his face returning. His chrome silver eyes roam over them, taking in their pathetic appearance. “You are unwell,” He notes, his frown deepening, “You should return and rest; safety should be a top priority for all of us. What station do you plan to return to?”

“I’m fine,” Riley snaps, Ingo’s eyes widening. He looks a little hurt, and guilt crashes over Riley. No! They hadn’t meant to make him feel bad; they know he is just trying to help them. “Sorry, just tired, but I’m fine.”

He shakes his head. “You are not as you suggest, fine.” Ingo moves closer to them, invading Riley’s space. Most people would have gotten a sarcastic comment from Riley, but they never minded when Ingo was in their personal space. He presses the back of his hand against their head, a soft gasp escaping from him. “You are burning up! You need to return to the nearest station, immediately.”

“I think I’ll be okay-.”

“Stop,” Ingo cuts them off in the middle of their sentence, “Please do not lie to me, especially when it concerns important matters such as your health.” Riley wants to laugh a little. Back in Unova, it was normally Riley dragging Ingo and Emmet away from their jobs to take a break. And now Ingo was trying to get them to rest. As they search his kind eyes, all Riley finds is concern and something else they can’t quite name. It’s not fair that he looks at them that way, not fair at all. All Ingo had to do was give them those eyes, and Riley could be a complete and utter push-over.

Stepping back as they try to put distance between themself and Ingo, Riley coughs into their elbow, this cough sounding worse than the last. A new wave of anxiety flickers over Ingo’s face, and Riley tries to comfort him. “Don’t worry about it,” They attempt to give him a reassuring thumbs up, “We’re heading back to camp. Chompers is keeping an eye on me.”

“Chomp?” Chompers questions, as if this is news to her.

“It would be irresponsible of me not to conduct your journey safely back to camp. Onward, we go!” Some things never change. Even if he didn’t remember who he was, Ingo was still the same, especially with his one-track mind.

Too tired to continue arguing with him, Riley, Ingo, and Chompers start their journey back to camp. Riley shivers, struggling to keep up with the slow pace set by Ingo and Chompers. They yawn, already wishing they were back in camp, asleep in their bed roll. As they walk, Riley catches Ingo, watching them closely, practically hovering over them. Every time they even stumble slightly, they see Ingo move, ready to catch them if they should fall. “Something on your mind?” Riley asks.

Ingo is silent for a second, clearly trying to choose his words carefully. “Do you feel capable of walking?”

Riley raises an eyebrow. “I thought that’s what I was doing.” Poorly, but they were upright, at least. Gotta look on the bright side.

“You seem to be struggling. Please allow me to assist you; I do not want to watch you hurt yourself.” Riley stops, Ingo stopping beside them. “Please.” He adds softly, giving Riley those eyes again.

Arceus, be damned. “How do you want to help? It might be a little hard for me to lean on you, since-.” Riley motions between the two, Ingo being significantly taller than them. It sucked being short sometimes.

Tipping the brim of his tattered cap down, Riley notices the faint blush on his cheeks that he is trying to hide. “I could carry you back.”

Riley’s cheeks heat up. “I wouldn’t want-.”

“You would not be,” He blurts out loudly, Riley slightly wincing, “In fact, I insist! We could call Sneasler if you would prefer, but our journey would proceed much quicker if you allowed me to carry you.”

Ingo is right. Even though she comes as fast as she can, it does take Sneasler some time to get to Riley. “Okay, you can carry me.”

Clearing his throat awkwardly, the red on Ingo’s cheeks grows a little brighter. “I am going to pick you up now. Please be careful,” He warns them as if Riley might startle. They simply nod, allowing Ingo to pick them up in his arms. Riley wraps their arms around his neck, a sense of security washing over them. For the first time, Riley felt safe in Hisui, here in Ingo’s arms. Leaning their head against his chest, Riley lets out a soft, content sigh. “Are you comfortable?”

“Yeah,” They yawn, “I am.”

“Excellent! Onward, we go!” Ingo starts walking, Chompers still beside the pair. As Ingo walks, Riley feels their eyelids growing heavy. Between their closeness to Ingo and the rhythm of his walking, Riley succumbs to sleep, finally feeling safe to do so.

Ingo glances down, unsurprised to find Riley asleep in his arms. Their body is warm against his, leaving Ingo with an almost familiar feeling of happiness. He does worry that they seem so reckless with their health. A tight flare of panic rises in his chest at the thought of losing them. Even before Riley explained that they knew each other in his previous life, Ingo found himself drawn to the other stranger who fell from the sky. Something about Riley immediately felt familiar, as if Ingo had known them his whole life. Yet, he has no memories of them, something which bothers him deeply. Perhaps, Ingo could ask them a few questions when they felt better.

“Please take care of yourself. No one, especially I, would like to see harm come to you.” Ingo presses a soft kiss against their forehead, unable to help himself. Riley snuggles closer to him, a soft satisfied sigh leaving them. Ingo is unable to help himself, the smile breaking out on his face. Now, to return safely to their destination.

Summary: Ingo and Riley feel overwhelmed after returning to Modern-day Unova from Hisui.

Words: 854 words.

Content Warnings: References to amnesia, general trauma, and panic. Frankly, Riley and Ingo are just overwhelmed from time-travel and maybe a little codependent. Let me know if there is anything else I need to tag for.

Ingo inhales a deep breath, uneasiness settling over him. Even though it must have been only a few hours, it feels like an eternity since Riley had Arceus take them back to Modern day Unova from the distant past of Hisui. Everything is starting to get to Ingo, who feels like his life is rapidly speeding off the rails. The constant hum of the technology in the background drills into his head, leaving him with a dull pain. He shifts in the hospital bed, feeling truly alone for the first time in a long time. Even in Hisui, he had Sneasler, Irida, Laventon, and other friends. He had Riley. Ingo knows he should be happy, ecstatic even. And he is, especially after seeing Emmet, his twin brother, again. (Even if he still can’t remember Emmet fully.) But everything is so overwhelming, panic starting to rise in his chest.

He wishes Riley were here. Riley. Ingo and Riley had been uncoupled from each other, after being found in the Nimbasa Subway tunnels during a power outage. Doctors and Nurses fussed over Ingo, while Police Officers questioned him. He could only assume that Riley was subjected to the same procedure.

“Hey.” Riley stands in the doorway of his room, shooting him a soft smile. Ingo sits up, the panic starting to subside at the sight of a familiar face. They close the door gently behind them, wheeling their IV stand over to his bedside. Riley casually plops down in the chair beside him, kicking their feet up on the edge of his bed. “They keep you overnight, too?” They pause as they look around, confusion apparent on their face. “Where’s Emmet? I thought he would have stayed.”

Ingo nods. “Emmet tried to,” He remembers the scene earlier of Emmet arguing loudly with the Doctors, “but they threatened to revoke his visitation privileges.” Ingo pauses for a moment, a thought coming to him. “I…think he will find some way to stay. If not tonight, tomorrow,” He adds, his tone hesitant.

“Yeah,” Riley lets out a quiet laugh, “That’s Emmet. Wouldn’t be surprised if he found some way to get in here without the doctors or nurses noticing.”

He laughs, trying to keep his laughter soft. “I think I agree I with you. How are you feeling?”

“Fine,” Riley shrugs casually, “Thought I was going to have to fight that Snubbull of a nurse to get to you, but I managed to sneak by.” Ingo gives them a pointed look, knowing that they’re likely hiding what they really feel. “Okay, Okay. I’m not fine. Truth is, I didn’t want to be alone. I just wanted to be around you.”

“I did not want to be alone. I hoped that we would be reunited.” Riley takes his hand in their hand, rubbing the back of his hand with their thumb.

“Me too,” They let out a low chuckle, “I’m starting to feel like life in Hisui was simpler.” Ingo nods, comforted by the presence of Riley’s hand in his. Things in Hisui did seem simpler. A comfortable silence falls over between the two as they find comfort in the presence of the other. In the darkness of the room, Ingo observes Riley’s face in the shadow of the hallway lights, streaming through the blinds. He notes the dark circles under their eyes, their normally laidback smile not quite reaching their tired eyes. Their shoulders are slumped as if they’re finally feeling the burden placed upon them. For the first time since Ingo met Riley in Hisui, Riley looks exhausted, truly, utterly exhausted.

Ingo scoots over on the bed, gently tugging Riley’s hand. “Come, lay down in bed with me.”

Riley raises a red eyebrow. “It’ll be a tight squeeze.”

“You and I have been in tighter spots.”

“Both literally and metaphorically,” They quietly laugh, releasing his hand. Ingo tries not to panic, already missing the comforting feel of their hand in his. Getting out of the chair, Riley climbs into the bed with him. It is a tight squeeze, but Ingo feels steady like he’s back on track with Riley next to him. The pair lay down next to each other, Riley’s head resting on his shoulder. Their fingers gently graze his hand, the movement soft and slow. Ingo takes their hand in his, noting the soft red on Riley’s freckled cheeks. “Just feel better holding your hand.”

“Please no not apologize. I feel better holding your hand too; I feel that we will not be pulled apart so easily.”

“Me too.” Ingo feels Riley shift slightly beside him, their voice trembling as they ask, “I know this is silly, but promise me you’ll be here in the morning.”

“I promise.” He gently squeezes their hand as Riley lets out a relieved sigh. The pair are a two-car train that cannot be separated from one another. At least, for the moment. “I promise I will not leave you. Will you still be here in the morning?”

“Trust me,” Riley squeezes his hand in return, a warm feeling rising in his chest, “You’re my best friend; I’m never leaving you.”

Mika, thank you for sending these in! I'm still kind of working on Riley and their relationship with Ingo, so some of these might change in the future. Also, I'm putting this under a cut because it became longer than expected.

How did they first meet?

Riley and Ingo met as teenagers on their League journey, specifically after Ingo and Emmet defeated the first gym. Ingo and Emmet did not have a good impression of Riley, who was just straight-up trash-talking the twins. After the first gym, they became something of a rival to both Ingo and Emmet.

About halfway through the league journey, the twins and Riley take out a couple of bad guys while having to rely on each other. Managing to get themselves out of it, Riley apologizes to the twins about how they’ve been treating them. At that point, Riley’s relationship with the twins starts to change, and by the end of the league journey, Riley is best friends with them.

Who kissed who first?

Riley. Ingo is the first one to confess that he likes Riley, but they kiss him shortly after the confession. What can Riley say? They had been wanting to kiss him for a while.

Who is more inclined to be jealous or possessive?

Riley. They don’t get super possessive or jealous as they trust Ingo, but if someone isn’t taking his polite rebuttals, Riley will step in.

Who is the most physically affectionate?

Riley, definitely. They like to cuddle and think it’s adorable when Ingo gets flustered. He adores affection from Riley, but it's just a little bit much at times. Plus, Ingo is pretty affectionate himself.

(Even when the two were just friends, Riley was pretty physically affectionate with him, and vice versa.)

What do they do when they’re bored and together?

Battle. Both are hardcore trainers with a love for battling and seeing how much the other person has grown, especially if one *cough* Riley *cough* has been away for a while. Otherwise, they split their time between watching train documentaries and cuddling, or Riley finding some way to pull the pair into some unexpected adventure.

In Hisui, when the two were bored and Riley needed a break from working on the Pokedex, they would hang out a lot with Sneasler and her kittens.

Thoughts on PDA(Public Displays of Affection)?

Both are fine with PDA and even enjoy it. Ingo just asks that Riley keeps it appropriate when they come to visit the Battle Subway as he is working. That usually means keeping it to hand-holding or a quick kiss on the cheek.

Would they ever get married?

Ingo would definitely like to, but Riley has doubts about marriage. They would spend the rest of their life in a heartbeat with Ingo, but they don’t want to break his heart. Riley is the type of person who gets a little cagey if they stay in one place too long, which is why their job involves a lot of traveling. They’re scared that he might decide that isn’t something he wants to put up with and leave.

Haven’t actually decided if the two do get married.

What do others think of them dating?

Emmet is both relieved and happy. He’s been waiting for them to get together for foreverrrr! Plus, it makes Emmet happy to see two of his favorite people in the world happy. He really hopes things work out for Ingo and Riley, but that doesn’t stop from him teasing the couple.

Elesa and their other mutual friends feel the same way Emmet does: relieved to see the pair together. They also hope that things work out for the duo.

Riley’s siblings (who I don't have names for yet) are happy to see them together. They’ve always liked Ingo and think he is a nice guy. Riley’s parents are less enthusiastic. They see Ingo as another reason why Riley won't come back to their small hometown, where they think Riley should be. (That wasn’t going to happen, even before Riley met Ingo.)

Their Pokemon teams are really happy to see the two together. Riley and Ingo’s teams work well with each other, and the other trainer has always gotten well along with the other person’s team. Most excited are Ingo’s Chandelure, and Riley’s Bisharp, Stabby. Chandelure has always liked Riley, especially since Riley gives great scritches and feeds them treats when Ingo isn’t looking. Stabby, meanwhile, has two moods for people: Stab (affectionate) and Stab (derogatory). With Ingo, they’re very soft and not stab-happy. Riley jokes that they think Stabby likes him more.

Are they a super sappy couple?

Riley and Ingo would say no, but everyone would loudly say ‘Yes’ over them. Anytime, the pair look at each other, it’s with a sappy, lovestruck look in their eyes. It’s better than the pining, at least.

Who makes the other smile with almost no effort at all?

Both. Riley’s casual yet fond teasing of Ingo makes him smile. Meanwhile, Ingo’s sincere enthusiasm always makes Riley smile, especially when he is going on about something he really loves.

Riley and Ingo try to share the cleaning, but Ingo usually ends up with a larger share due to Riley's travel schedule. (They try to make it up to him in other ways.)

Riley is the messier of the two, but they're really not that messy. If anything, they're just slightly disorganized at times.

I haven't decided on one, but I really like Revolution by Bastille as their song. I've also been listening to Right Through Me by The Home Team when writing for them.

Describe their first date.

Their first date was technically ‘not a date’, but a date, nonetheless.

In Hisui, Riley and Ingo went stargazing in the Coronet Highlands after Riley fights Dialga and Palkia at Mount Coronet. The two lay there underneath the stars, joking around with each other and flirting. Riley really felt like they had their best friend back, and Ingo started to feel like himself. It was a good night for those two.

4. Who initiates affection? Why does the other not initiate affection as much?

Riley. Just because they’re so casual with affection.

Ingo doesn’t initiate affection too much when he’s working at the station. Gotta be a professional after all! That said, once he’s off his shift, it’s fair game about which one will be more affectionate.

7. How often do they say “I love you”?

Very often. After everything that went down in Hisui, Riley and Ingo both know that tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. Neither wants to waste the chance to tell the other person that they love them.

8. What do they love most about the other? Why?

Riley loves how earnest and passionate Ingo is about everything he does. Whether it involves trains or Pokémon, Ingo throws himself into everything with passion, and Riley adores it. They also love how kind he can be, despite appearing scary at times with his permanent frown.

Ingo adores how fearless and confident Riley is. They never seem to be afraid of anything and are never afraid to try anything new. This encourages him to be more open to new things. And similarly, to Riley, he does adore how kind they can be, especially with Pokémon.

13. How do they keep in contact when they’re apart? Do they write letters, talk on the phone, or simply wait out the time?

Even before they became a couple, Riley and Ingo stayed in contact with each other while Riley was traveling. When Riley travels, they always make sure to schedule video calls and are always sending him pictures of cool stuff, especially trains. (It’s always a highlight for them when they get an essay back from Ingo about the train in the photo they sent.) If Riley is back from traveling, they’ll usually keep in contact over their Xtransceivers or Rotom Phones.

In Hisui, Riley and Ingo wrote each other a lot of letters.

14. Do they enjoy PDA, or are they more private with affection?

Yep. Riley and Ingo aren’t super domestic, but they do enjoy the small moments, and it feels nice to be domestic, especially after Riley comes back from traveling. Their favorite domestic thing to do together is cook.

Usually, Riley or Ingo will reach for the other person’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. They’ll look at each other, and it’s just a small confirmation that they are there for each other.

31. Do they often go out on dates? What are these like?

Pretty often, as long as their schedules permit it.

Their dates tend to be pretty casual, or rather, Riley and Ingo aren’t nervous on their dates since they know each other so well. There is a lot of laughing, playing around, and just chilling with each other. It’s very rare that their dates are super serious or that Riley or Ingo is nervous about a date.

36. How do they feel about having kids? Are they in agreement?

Riley and Ingo are on the fence about kids. Ingo feels more positive about it than Riley does, but Riley also worries that they are too independent to be a good parent.

45. How do they support each other? How do they rely on each others support?

Mainly, Riley and Ingo support each other by making sure the other comes up for air. Even before Riley and Ingo started dating, Ingo was a workaholic. Riley would usually drag him and Emmet away from work when it became clear that they were putting in too much overtime. When Riley and Ingo return from Hisui and he starts working at the station again, Ingo is better about his workaholic ways, but Riley still has to drag him away every once in a while.

In Hisui, Riley and Ingo have the opposite problem, where Riley is the one overworking themself. They’re so determined to get Ingo back home to Unova and Emmet that they don’t realize that they’re running themself into the ground. It starts with Ingo asking for help with Sneasler as a way to get Riley to take a break. As Ingo starts to gain some of his memories and becomes more familiar with Riley, he feels more confident in making them take a break without having to come up with an excuse.

How did they get together?

Spoilers, I guess, if you haven’t played PLA?

It took a long ass time for these two to get together. My current timeline for Riley and Ingo getting together is when they return to Unova after being stuck in Hisui. Even then, it takes a while before they get together as Riley and Ingo have to rebuild their lives after being missing for months. Plus, Ingo is still slowly regaining his memories.

Anyway, one night after Riley walks Ingo home from work, he asks them to stay, and that’s when their relationship officially begins.

Do they give each other nicknames?

Not really? Riley is terrible at giving nicknames and should not be allowed to. (I mean, they named their Bisharp when it was a Pawniard, Stabby. Extremely original, Riley!) If anything, Riley might call Ingo handsome to see him blush, but they truly mean it.

Ingo might be more old-school in his nicknames for Riley, like Dear.

How often are road trips?

Not often. If the pair are taking a trip in modern-day Unova, it’s usually via Train or airplane/boat if they’re going to a different region. If the pair are traveling in Hisui, it’s usually by foot.

What are their morning rituals?

Ingo is normally up before Riley, getting ready for work at the Battle Subway. If Riley manages to get up that early with him, they might make Ingo a cup of coffee. Otherwise, he’s usually out the door before Riley is awake. He’ll usually give them a kiss before he leaves.

If it’s a day where neither of them are working, Riley and Ingo usually relax in bed for a while before getting up to make breakfast.

Thoughts on each other’s family?

At this point, Emmet is practically like a brother to Riley. They love him and are always joking around with Emmet. The only problem is that both are insanely competitive, which can lead to intense Pokemon battles/game nights.

Ingo likes Riley’s two younger siblings (who don’t have names), even if he isn’t as close with them as Riley is with Emmet. When Riley traveled, he always kept an eye out for their siblings, helping them if they needed it. He is less fond of Riley’s parents. (To be fair to Ingo, Riley is not fond of their own parents.) However, he tends to be polite, if not distant, around Riley's parents

What was their most memorable date?

Uhhh…This is a hard one as I haven’t really thought about dates for them.

I’m not sure if this technically counts, but when they were in Hisui, Riley and Ingo went stargazing one night by themselves. They weren’t together, but there was a lot of flirting and enjoying each other’s company. It was a really nice night amongst the chaos.

Who stays up too late and makes stupid jokes?

Riley, especially when they’re jetlagged. They try not to bother Ingo too much, especially when he has work the next day.
