a great advice for when you are afraid that your oc is too similar to a canonical character is to Take your oc and dump them directly into the place of the canon character to see how They'd react to the situations. they react too similarly for your tastes? edit them up.
example: it was worrying me quite a lot that Zephyr might be too similar to Moon. both an old female ("female"... it's supersized microwaves how female could it be /j) Gen 1 iterator that is the senior of her group that collapses and her absence seems to somehow both affect a lot and not at all the rest of the group, both are relatively kind as evidenced by their interactions with slugcats. alright, that's really similar- don't feckin like that! but big part of that is the inevitable fate of all iterators (all will one day collapse). you could call it a trope, cliché. tropes and clichés are tools for the story to take a root somewhere and then the characters themselves help develop it in an unique way
"okay, so i'm going to throw Zephyr into Moon's situation and compare how both of them (would in Zeph's case) deal with it to see if their personalities are too much the same." i say to myself

a collection of random headcanons about wyll and zeph (my durge who’s romancing him):
wyll is the main party’s resident guidance-giver (thank you pact of the tome). when zeph wants to ask for it, he just reaches a hand over for wyll to take and wyll casts the spell as he takes it. zeph always makes sure to wyll’s hand a little thank you squeeze when he feels the magic hit. once they’re in a relationship, zeph reaching for wyll’s hand just to hold it often leads to wyll casting an unnecessary guidance out of habit, and the little bursts of accidental magic inevitably make both of them blush.
the two of them are very protective of each other in battle. if they’re both in melee, they almost always fight back to back. even if they’re not next to each other, they always watch each other’s backs with a crossbow bolt or eldritch blast ready for the second they notice that the other might be getting overwhelmed by enemies. zeph tends to be more obviously self-sacrificing about it, and wyll gives him a fair number of stern talks about it, but he’s noticed the darker sides of wyll’s hero act too and will gladly prove when necessary that he can give an earful just as well as wyll can.
zeph is much bigger than wyll and takes every possible opportunity to pick him up. it’s not uncommon to see wyll sitting up on zeph’s shoulders while both of them cheer after a successful fight. astarion declares this formation “the blade of frontiers and his noble steed”, and seeing the two of them approaching like that is often the first way everyone back at camp knows the day went well. karlach never complains about carrying wyll’s things so he isn’t too heavy for zeph to carry that far.
after wyll is transformed, zeph and karlach team up to teach wyll horns 101 — how to take care of them, comfortably sleep with them, and so on. (zeph happily gives him lessons on how to cuddle without them getting in the way.) they also like to take turns decorating them for him, usually with flowers they find growing wherever they are at the time and any makeup or paints they can get their hands on. they’re determined to show him that he doesn’t need to be ashamed of his new form.
in waukeen’s rest, the second wyll says that the person they’re trying to save is his dad, zeph breaks through the door and races in alongside the flaming fist. that’s when wyll first starts to realize he’s falling for zeph — when he watches zeph run straight into a burning building without a second thought, blowing right past a door that four other people working together hadn’t been able to budge, just because he heard someone inside was important to wyll.
late into the night of the tiefling party, when things are winding down, zeph realizes that wyll still hasn’t come back to his tent so he goes to check on him and finds him asleep by the water. instead of waking him up, zeph just picks him up, carries him over to his bedroll, and basically tucks him in. wyll does wake up enough from the motion to notice what’s happening, but he pretends to be asleep still because it’s cute and he doesn’t want zeph to stop. he would never admit that he enjoyed something like that, but when no one knows he’s aware of it and he can pretend he had no idea it was even happening (and he’s half-asleep enough to not care so much about that anyway)? he’s not above indulging in that comfort for a little while.

DAY 14 OF FLUFFTOBER: “I hate it” - “No, you don’t”
Ship: Dean x Zeph
Words: 717
« I’m not getting out. » Dean warned and Zeph chuckled, shaking his head.
« Oh come on, just show me. It can’t be that bad. » His lover was waiting for him, already all dressed up. Sure, he wasn’t a particular fan of the outfit. But it was one of the day where he needed to do an exception. And so was Dean.
Dean finally got out of the bathroom, wearing his tuxedo. Zeph nodded in approval. Gosh, his boyfriend was handsome, he thought. He frowned a bit though, as he noticed a piece missing.
« You need to put the bowtie too, you know? » He called out and Dean scoffed at the comment.
« Really? Is all of this necessary? » He argued and Zeph sighed.
« You know they will kill us if we don’t look as planned. That means putting all the accessories necessarily. » Zeph explained and Dean rolled his eyes.
« What would the big deal? If they aren’t happy, we’ll just not go. » He said groggily and Zeph sneered at that.
« Us? Not going to Lorcan and Nora’s wedding? Isa and Priscilla will drag our ass down to the church themselves. We can’t get away from it. » Zeph told him and, as much Dean wanted to argue, he knew Zeph was right. This was not a thing they could get away from.
Zeph stood up from the bed he was sitting, grabbing the bowtie.
« Here. » He said as he put it in his lover’s neck, tying it properly, before looking at the time.
« We’ll have to go now if we don’t want to be late. Let’s grab the gift and let’s go. » Zeph said, getting out of the room before Dean followed, grumbling as he grabbed the poorly wrapped gift that was waiting in their shared room.
They arrived at the wedding soon after. They were greeted by Nora at the entrance as she smiled brightly at the presence of the two boys.
« Dean! Zeph! You made it! » She said with a big smile and both men smiled at her.
« Of course we did. » Zeph said.
« We wouldn’t have missed it for anything. » Dean added, faking a bit his enthusiasm.
They shared pleasantries before giving the gift to Nora and let her go for her to finish getting ready.
As she was gone, Zeph turned to Dean and laughed, mockingly.
« You are such an horrible liar. » He pointed out and Dean huffed at that, crossing his arms.
« Let’s go get a drink. If I want to survive this, I’ll definitely need one. » He said and Zeph nodded.
« Seems like you read my mind. » He admitted before they both walked to the bar.

The wedding ceremony done, everyone had eaten and now was drinking and dancing. Zeph looked around for Dean but noticed he had eclipsed himself. He sighed with a soft smile before walking out, finding him not so far.
« It became too much for you, didn’t it? » He asked gently, sitting by him.
Dean nodded before there was a silence… Until the two boys looked at each other and started laughing.
« I expected something that cutesy but that was something. » Zeph started and Dean nodded.
« Right! All these sweet words and speeches, gosh, I hate it. » Dean retorted but Zeph shook his head.
« No you don’t. » He accused gently and Dean stopped, looking at him with a raised eyebrow.
« How can you know that? » He challenged and Zeph smiled gently.
« Cause I know when it’ll be our turn, our speeches might be cringy and all cutesy too, don’t you think? » He said and Dean’s eyes widened at the comment.
A blush raised itself on his cheeks and face and the silence came back. This time, though, it felt like something else. Something they hadn’t touch yet.
Zeph shook his head.
« But let’s not think about it right now, yeah? We can think about this later. » He added and Dean let a relief sigh escape him.
That was definitely a conversation for later. Yet, he still reached for Zeph’s hand.
« … Yeah. We can. »
