Doraemon Long Stories Vol. 6: Nobita's Little Star Wars

First of all, I have no idea why Gian is not on the cover. That's an odd design choice, especially considering that no other volume in Doraemon Long Stories omits any of the main characters from its cover, as far as I'm aware.
This is a solid Doraemon story that I find engaging in all of its retellings, and it does a good job of placing focus on each of the protagonists. (If anything, the contributions from Suneo, Shizuka, and even Gian arguably stand out more than those of Nobita and Doraemon!)
A very unusual element of the manga that didn't make it into either movie adaptation is that Nobita's parents properly meet Papi the alien, the main "guest character" of the story. This may be the most involved that Nobita's parents have gotten in the adventure component of any of the Fujio-authored Doraemon Long Stories.
Something that is not unique to the manga but I figure I'd address here is that during the climax, the heroes are saved when the effect of the Small Light wears off on them. This plot development is sometimes accused of being a deus ex machina that has never been previously introduced in the franchise. Although it's true that it isn't foreshadowed within this story, Doraemon mentions the effect of the Small Light wearing off in the 1973 story "Uncle and the Elephant", so there is in fact precedent for this. As I mentioned in my review, by far a bigger problem (in fact, probably the single biggest problem) with the plot of Nobita's Little Star Wars in my opinion is that it never acknowledges commonly-used gadgets like the Big Light that could have easily reversed the Small Light's shrinking function.
I've already praised the 2022 movie remake for the way it adapted this story, but reading the manga makes me appreciate even more how it was able to streamline much of the plot while fleshing out the motivations and personalities of multiple major characters. Now I want to watch it again, and it's already one of my most rewatched Doraemon movies...

I'd love to talk about something I really like about this series! I feel there's plenty, but I'll just talk about two things I think are underrated under the cut:
First things first, one of my favorite things about the series has always been Suneo's relationship with his mom. I always loved that he's like a lil mini her, and that they are close.
I love to see a parent and child be close and get along in any type of series, found family or actual blood relatives. It's just very sweet to see and it makes me happy!
There's an episode I recall where they were searching for his mom's favorite piece of clothing and it turned out to be a shirt Suneo made for her:
There's also a more recentish episode where Mrs. Honekawa allows Suneo to wear and share clothes from her own closet, and is overall supportive of his fashion designer dreams.
There's plenty I think that can be pointed to, endless list of examples, but overall they are my favorite family duo of the series.
Otherwise my other favorite thing is the Suneo, Shizuka and Gian friendship. It's strange and you wonder sometimes if Shizuka's so nice, why does she hang out with these two so much? I could go into headcanons or wishes for the series, but instead I'll say I just think what they have going on is sweet.
It's in the fact that, as it goes for the most part, there's a lack of any romantic interest between her and those two. Sometimes there's an occasional moment with Suneo, but it doesn't really ever feel like he's legit pursuing her. No predestined romance, or nonsense unlike with someone else.
I like how she laughs along with them often, that they all seem close enough that Suneo always invites them out with him. Presumably a popular enough kid, and perceived as very kind hanging out with two little menaces to society.
One of my favorite bits, an overall small moment, is in 'I Don't Like Shizuka-Chan Being Like This':
Context: This Shizuka is a fake, a copy robot, and overall causing problems for Doraemon and Nobita. I just love this bit because on seeing Shizuka fall down, and Nobita being the one to cause that to happen, they rush over FURIOUS with him.
I think it's sweet that they are immediately on the attack if someone is being mean to her, even if that assumption in this case would be false.
There's more in the series but I wanna point out Little Star Wars is amazing for the fact it's got Shizuka and Suneo as a duo. Also they get to blow up people together, now that's a bonding activity.
I love Gian and Suneo as a duo as is, but it is very refreshing to see them be apart.

btw i finally watched the newer doraemon films and, by the dekisugi factor, the remade nobita little star wars had got to be the best (so many screen times of dekisugii and he actually interacted with the group). they also even change the story line a little bit to deviate more and made him IN THE SAME SCENE AS NOBITA (im pathetic) compared to the manga where they're not really working together
I really wish that in the future that means he'll be used more as a character and even become the official part of the grouppp i want him out and experiencing fun things i love them so muchh-

A Bitch Can't Even Have A Headcanon Anymore!
my mind is so in tune with the show that my headcanons turn out to be canon... i know my characters too well!
i had this headcanon that, since suneo wants to become a fashion designer in the future, he'll be the one working on shizuka's wedding dress. then one day i'm watching this episode ("the dream code" #1640) which starts with suneo reading a fashion magazine and explaining to his friends that he wants to work in the fashion industry when he grows up. when they're talking about their future, suneo offers to design shizuka's wedding dress when she gets married (and gian offers to sing at her wedding).
this second headcanon is sillier but the coincidence is just as noteworthy: i was thinking "haha imagine if gian called suneo shorty" (cuz he tiny) and see what i caught on nobita's little star wars 2021... he didn't exactly call suneo that word but he said it to him so it still counts, right?
...my mind! who's doing it like me? nobody!

I have a question. Have you ever watched Doraemon? I have quite a bit of nostalgia from it on Disney XD.
I've seen bits and pieces of it, but the name was instantly recognisable.
Its animes and movies are the types of animation that exaggerate facial expressions in a super fun way, like the time Suneo pulled his lips back and suddenly had fangs in Nobita's Little Star Wars.
I know there's been a lot of remakes, so if you ever want to request it, feel free to specify which version. Now that you've reminded me, I may watch some of it later.

Doraemon Movie Review: Nobita's Little Star Wars (1985) and Nobita's Little Star Wars 2021 (2022)
What is Doraemon? The title character of the Doraemon manga and anime is a blue robotic cat from the 22nd Century who keeps an array of high-tech gadgets in a portable pocket dimension on his belly, and has traveled from the future to improve the fortunes of a hapless schoolboy named Nobita. Although relatively obscure in the English-speaking world, Doraemon is a Mickey-Mouse-level cultural icon in East Asia (and some other regions, too). The Doraemon franchise was a big part of my childhood, and there are still elements of it that I enjoy now.
Doraemon has released theatrical films almost annually since 1980, most of which involve Nobita and his friends (kind Shizuka, brash Gian, and crafty Suneo) getting swept into adventures thanks to Doraemon's gadgets. Despite being of potentially broad appeal to fans of science fiction and animated films, there are very few English reviews of the Doraemon movies, so I'm embarking on a project to write about all the films that have come out so far. Good luck to me…
Movie premise: Nobita and his friends help tiny aliens overthrow a dictatorship.
My spoiler-free take: A pretty good Doraemon movie with enjoyable characterization and character interactions, if one can forgive the main source of tension being maintained by a relatively weak thread.
The 2022 remake is a solid reimagining of the story that capitalizes on the original’s strengths. If forced to choose, I might even recommend it over its predecessor.
POTENTIAL SPOILERS AFTER THIS POINT
Review: This film has a lot going for it in my book. For starters, it is one of the few in which Suneo gets a prominent role, not only in plot relevance but also in character focus. Given that he can often come across as the least sympathetic and most neglected of the main characters, that’s a very welcome development.
Shizuka also has some good scenes here, even though she actually gets forced into the damsel-in-distress role at one point. (Recall that in Nobita and the Castle of the Undersea Devil, she volunteered for the part.) She is quickly rescued and remains an active participant in the story afterward, so I suppose I can let that slide. In fact, one of my other favorite elements of this movie is that Shizuka and Suneo share several scenes together, which is a very rarely-seen dynamic in the franchise.
The villains of this film may not be the most powerful among those that Doraemon and friends have faced, but they’re probably some of the most threatening. They see through or circumvent nearly every strategy that the heroes come up with, and in the end are only defeated through circumstances that they couldn’t have predicted. That, however, brings me to the main weakness of this movie...
Throughout the story, tension is maintained by the fact that the main characters have shrunk themselves down using Doraemon’s Small Light, which gets stolen by the villains. As shown in the final battle, the Lilliputian aliens are barely a threat when the Earthlings are at their normal size. Therefore, the protagonists’ primary goal for much of the film is to retrieve the Small Light so they can reverse the shrinking effect. That may sound reasonable enough, but it completely ignores the fact that Doraemon also owns a Big Light (with the power to enlarge objects, if the name didn’t give that away), which should have readily solved this problem.
To be fair, this is a common issue with Doraemon films. For almost every time the main characters are supposedly in some kind of crisis, dedicated Doraemon fans can probably name a gadget that could have resolved the situation. However, this example stands out in particular, because the Big Light is a gadget that makes regular appearances in the franchise (including in the previous movie!). If one can look past this apparent oversight, however, I think there’s more to like about this movie than not.
Star rating: ★★★★☆
Like most of the other early Doraemon movies, this one has a remake. For anyone confused about why it’s titled “2021” when it was released in 2022, it’s because its premiere was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Review: I think this remake does a decent job of not only retaining but expanding on the strengths of the original. For example, there are even more scenes focusing on Suneo and how he feels about being dragged into yet another dangerous adventure. The protagonists also get to spend more time with Papi, their most prominent new ally in this story, and learn more about what makes him tick. Furthermore, this version dives into the main plot much more quickly, eliminating much of the setup in the original that ultimately did not end up mattering a whole lot.
Although the Big Light is not directly addressed in this remake either, Doraemon does mention at one point that he doesn’t have any gadgets on him that can return everyone to their original size, so one can probably assume that the Big Light happened to be under maintenance or was otherwise unusable during the events of the film.
There are a few changes that I felt lukewarm about. The entirely new character of Papi’s sister, Piina, seemed like an unnecessary addition that did not affect the story much. I also thought that the voice direction on Papi’s flying dog sidekick, Rokoroko, was more effective at getting across his “motor-mouthed” personality in the original. At the same time, I don’t think these elements harm the quality of this film substantially.
One other noteworthy edit here is the removal of the many homages to classic movies in the original. Those were fun, but I’m also not especially attached to them, so this was a change that I didn’t particularly mind.
Star rating: ★★★★☆
Original or remake? This is a close one. For me, the pros and cons of both versions largely even out relative to each other. If I had to pick one though, the remake might actually come out just ahead. The fact that it built upon some of the best qualities of the original was a strong creative decision, I feel.
Besides, the new art style is shiny.

Shizuka may be nice, but she’s not a pushover. The boys, especially Nobita, often learn this the hard way when when she catches them being perverts towards her (or thinks they are behaving that way).
