2019 Volkswagen Amarok Forbidden Fruit Drive: What the U.S. Is Missing

The Amarok has been in Volkswagen’s lineup since 2010, but the truck has always stayed away from the U.S. A popular pickup in South America, the Amarok competes against the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara, and Mitsubishi L200. The body-on-frame truck was conceived under VW’s Commercial Vehicles division, and although the automaker is considering building a production version of the Tanoak concept for the U.S. market, it’s unlikely we’ll see this Amarok stateside. On a recent trip to Mexico City, I had the chance to sample Volkswagen’s much beloved midsize truck.

My joy in finally driving the Amarok was multiplied when I discovered my tester came with a manual gearbox and a diesel engine. The Amarok Dune 4×4 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder mill that produces 140 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque, and it’s mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

Even though this trim comes with black alloy wheels and a touchscreen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it felt more like a work truck with its black plastic front bumpers and pale interior. We’re not complaining about it; it’s just not the fancy lifestyle Amarok that we’ve seen previously. Our tester came with four hooks on the bed (one on each corner) and a BedXtender basket that allows you to have the tailgate open in case you have longer stuff. The 5-foot bed felt a bit small in comparison to the midsize trucks we have in America, and that was partly because of the big wheelwells.

Although VW labels the Amarok Dune as a 4×4 truck, that seems to be in name only. Our truck came equipped with a 4Motion AWD system and an electronic diff lock.

As you may imagine, 140 hp is very little for a truck this size. The Amarok feels quite slow when driven on the highway and struggled to pass slower vehicles. It did feel torquey, though. The manual transmission helps, and I found myself downshifting quite a bit when climbing the hills that surround the western part of the city. The stick shift’s short throws were widely noted, as well as the clutch pedal’s precise bite.

The Dune is one of four Amarok versions offered in Mexico. Other trims are equipped with the 3.0-liter V-6 TDI, which delivers a robust 224 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque—much better than the one I drove. Like almost every other unladen truck, the Amarok felt bouncy when driving on the city streets and highways, so a little weight in the bed wouldn’t hurt.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find hard plastics everywhere and a steering wheel free of buttons. Our model came equipped with cloth seats (where are the vinyl seats?) and rubber floormats, and it was missing an armrest and a proper center console. Although the crew cab provides decent space in the back seat, the rear seatback is quite upright; it reminded me of the two-door Ranger XL we drove during the 2020 Truck of the Year competition.

The Amarok has proven to be a popular truck globally, and with VW and Ford forming a joint venture to produce a midsize truck for us Yanks, we could see a VW-badged truck in the U.S. sooner rather than later.

Nissan Navara 2019 update brings new gearbox and added kit Nissan has updated its Navara NP300 pick-up for 2020, with increased connectivity and a new six-speed gearbox among the chief changes. On sale from 1 July in the UK, the refreshed Navara range is available from £21,850 exc. VAT for the entry-level King Chassis Cab Visia rising to £31,125 for the Double Cab N-Guard with an optional seven-speed automatic gearbox.  Multi-link rear suspension, previously equipped on top-spec models, is now fitted as standard to all variants, raising the pick-up’s rear by 25mm and increasing payload capacity by up to 46kg. The company also says the suspension revisions promote a more “comfortable and dynamic ‘car-like’ driving feel”.  The Navara’s entry-level 2.3-litre diesel engine has been given a second turbocharger, taking total power output from 158bhp to 161bhp, and good for a torque figure of 313lb ft. Experts say when it comes to pickup trucks, Toyota has history on its side. It has been making its Hilux pickup for more than 50 years. And over that time, it has gained something of a reputation for being one of the most capable all-terrain vehicles out there.

But there is another kid on the block, the Navara from Nissan. This pickup has been around in one form or another for more than 80 years. And in that time, Nissan has developed tremendous expertise in making a car that is durable and practical. So which is better? Interior

Jonathan Masiga, a mechanic, says both cars offer a very spacious and neat layout. They also made sure that the plastics used within do not appear cheap but luxurious. They also have an elaborate multimedia system but differ a bit: while the Hilux has got a simple yet informative instrument metre, the Navara NP300 has a 5-inch multimedia system. Nonetheless, the Hilux has a special cooling compartment for your drinks while the Navara has more USB ports and cup holders than the Hilux.

Exterior

Alex Ntambi, a car enthusiast, mentions that this aspect is somewhat difficult to compare because we have varying tastes; some may love the Navara NP300 curves while others may prefer Hilux’s strong look.

However, we could look at the range of colours that both cars have to offer: Navara comes in four colours while the Hilux in seven. Apart from having a wider colour range, Toyota Hilux also comes in black which a number of people prefer.

Driving experience and comfort

On good city roads, Aloysius Masaba, a Hilux owner admits that the Navara will give you a less-bumpy drive, just like any SUV would, while the Hilux will afford you power. That makes the Navara a favourite here.

Looking at suspension, he says the Navara’s multi suspension makes the drive even more comfortable and also renders the driver more handling because it shakes less. The rear suspension of the Navara eliminates the traditional leaf springs, replacing them with coil springs, these provide for a more stable ride and added comfort to rival comfort.

More to that, the passenger also feels comfortable at the rear of the trunk. That is quite the opposite for the Hilux which has leaf spring suspension. The leaf springs provide better handling with load and indeed offer more loading capacity.

Entertainment

Moses Mulungi, a tech fanatic, says both vehicles have six speakers and their multimedia system comes with USB ports, AUX jack, Bluetooth and a DVD player. They also have daylights and a reverse camera. The Hilux boasts of a 6.1-inch multimedia touch screen which dwarfs the Navara’s optional 5-inch screen. It also has a digital recorder which is quite trendy. However, it is not available in all its versions.

Torque and power

The Hilux comes with a 2.8litre engine while the Navara packs a 2.3litre engine giving it an advantage for fuel consumption if driven with similar conditions and driving style. To catch up on power, the Navara has a twin-turbo system that enables both to have a maximum torque of 450 Nm/rpm. However, the Navara gives off 19ps compared to the 177ps by the Hilux. However, we need to appreciate that the Navara does not rave a lot giving a false picture of being underpowered.

New Nissan Navara to be built in Africa

Nissan has announced that it will next year start building its award-winning Nissan Navara one-ton pick-up from its Rosslyn plant in Pretoria, South Africa.

This is a significant milestone for Nissan’s industrial expansion in Africa, which will result in efficient product delivery to the African market.

The Rosslyn plant has been producing various models for 60 years, operating exclusively as a Nissan plant since the 1980s. Most recently, it has become a light commercial vehicle hub for the production of the NP300 Hardbody and NP200 pick-ups, which are exported to 45 African markets.

Nissan Group of Africa MD Mike Whitfield confirmed the development.

“2020 will see the first of the Nissan Navara models rolling off the production line, strengthening our market-leading position,” Whitfield said.

“In the process, we will have increased the competitiveness of the Rosslyn plant and created almost 1 200 new jobs at the plant and across the supply chain.

“The investment by Nissan and its partners of US$207m will result in the transformation of Nissan’s South African supply chain network by developing 13 new black-owned suppliers and setting localised content targets of 60% in the South African-built Navara.”

According to Whitfield, the decision was the result of Nissan’s close relations with the government of South Africa on the need for a sustainable and competitive automotive industry.

“This has been demonstrated through a series of progressive automotive industrial development plans culminating in the ambitious South African Automotive Masterplan 2035,” he said.

“This not only sets targets but provides investment security and planning certainty for the next 16 years. To secure this investment, Nissan had to ensure that the plant meets world-class standards, by upskilling the employees.”

Today, the Rosslyn plant has been declared an anchor factory for the company’s Africa, Middle East and India region.

“Our vision for the future is for Nissan to have manufacturing hubs in other African countries — in addition to our two facilities in Egypt and Nigeria,” Whitfield said.

“Our belief is that Africa is not just the last frontier for the automotive industry, but also for significant industrialisation and growth.

“Automotive manufacture is an incredible spur to a country’s industrialisation — and as a country industrialises, diversifying its economy, so its GDP [gross domestic product] increases, and its people become financially sustainable.”

Whitfield said the automotive sector was behind the growth of industrialisation in many countries.

“We have seen this with the so-called Asian Tigers and most recently with China. Africa is like China 20 years ago; a very low level of motorisation and a very low GDP,” he said.

“What happened in China was an unequivocal determination to create growth, so policies were put in place, just like with the Asian Tiger economies, and the growth followed suit very shortly afterwards.”

Whitfield said Nissan’s goal is to work with African countries who want to partner with them to create a sustainable and competitive automotive industry.

“Africa is at the very beginning of this phase and we have partnered with countries, which we believe have both the potential for rapid growth and the will to work with us in creating this highly-specialised industry,” he said.

“We were the first movers in Nigeria and we have signed a memorandum of understanding in Ghana and we are looking at other countries in Africa where there is similar potential, like Kenya and Ethiopia.”
