Michael Carini | LEARN MORE
I did this little energetic piece titled "Remains" while listening to Ivan B and his album titled the same earlier this week as I tested the amazing STAGE speaker from Cleer Audio. Painting will never be the same again and I'm excited to see what is to come! What do you see in this painting?
If you like my work or are interested in taking a painting class with me, take a look at CariniArts.com and DM me with any questions. Every bit of support puts food on the table of a starving artist. This is all I do now so I need your support more than ever.

A Thousand Miles of History XXXVII: Toeing the Line
A Thousand Miles of History XXXVII: Toeing the Line
One of our main aims in taking the Cornwall trip, quite apart from the sheer beauty of the place and the fact that it is strewn with more ancient and sacred places than you could visit in a lifetime, had been to visit some of the sites on the Michael Line. The Line is a subject of much debate and is believed to be a ley… or an ancient trade-route, an earth energy current, a total fabrication,…

Review : Richard Jewell (2019)
I was a sophomore in high school when the Olympics came to Atlanta, Georgia, and with the World Cup having just been in the United States two years prior, Americans were eager to put their best foot forward. The world was changing rapidly at the time, and the 24 hour news cycle was just beginning to present itself, though we had yet to name it or identify how it would be so powerfully influential. Then, in one fleeting moment, a random bomb changed all of that, and a man went from being a security guard to public enemy number one in the blink of an eye. Clint Eastwood has always had an eye for humanity, especially when in the director’s chair, which piqued my interest when it was announced that he would be taking on the previously mentioned story in the form of his latest film, Richard Jewell.
In 1986, a young Richard Jewell (Paul Walter Hauser) meets attorney Watson Bryant (Sam Rockwell), and the two men form a bond that Jewell was unable to make with any of the other attorneys and partners that he worked for at the firm. Ten years later, Jewell has landed a job as a security guard at Piedmont University, which finds him closer to his dream of a job in law enforcement. After repeated reports of abuse of power, however, Dr. W Ray Cleere (Charles Green) is forced to fire Jewell, who transitions into a job as security for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. Shortly after midnight on July 27, Jewell breaks up a group of drunk and unruly teens, but notices a suspicious package in the form of a backpack that was near the ruckus. Jewell urges the officers on location to call in the package, and when the bomb inspector investigates, he discovers three extremely large pipe bombs. Jewell and the authorities attempt to clear the area, but the bomb explodes, injuring or killing over one hundred people. Jewell is initially seen as a hero, but after Atlanta Journal Constitution reporter Kathy Scruggs (Olivia Wilde) coerces a tip out of FBI Agent Tom Shaw (Jon Hamm), she runs a story identifying Jewell as the primary suspect, causing worldwide attention to be cast upon Jewell and his mother Bobi (Kathy Bates). With the help of Bryant, Richard Jewell attempts to fight attacks from the FBI and the news media, all in hopes of clearing his name.
Richard Jewell manages to provide a redemption portrayal for its titular subject without completely absolving him of base humanity or the capacity for wrongdoing. Rather than presenting a case for specifically absolving Jewell of past accusations and completely clearing his name, the film reaches for the bigger goal of setting an example of how wrong things can go when those accused find themselves guilty until proven innocent. It is flatly stated that Jewell could, in theory, fit the ‘false hero’ narrative, and due to being a Southern man with dreams of a role in law enforcement, his knowledge of guns, bombs and criminal personalities harm him more than help him. Most of all, his weakness is his kind nature, and his defensive mechanism of trying to trust in the law becomes the dramatic tension that cause Bobi and Walter pain, which in turn forces Jewell to the breaking point of having to stand up for his innocence.
Interesting, as evenly as Clint Eastwood decides to posture his protagonist, he is unflinching in the manner that he positions the government and the media squarely as antagonist. Be it the constant drone, presence and forceful nature of communication in the form of the media, or the calculated power bundled with sheer intimidation that the FBI utilizes, both parties (as entities) are looked at quite subjectively. The characters of Scruggs and FBI Agent Shaw are not completely devoid of empathy, though Shaw does seem to be fighting his own battle over pride in his job and whether or not he will be viewed as competent, to the point that he blindly seeks the indictment of Jewell. Watching Bates play Bobi on the verge of breakdown due to her lack of ability to protect Richard from this dual threat hits hard, hence her Golden Globe nomination.
Eastwood makes some interesting decisions as director that work well conceptually. The visual flare, fancy camera moves and hectic editing that defines most biopics is set aside for measured camerawork, allowing the story to be the sensation rather than the way it is presented. The choices of what is presented as stock footage, like Tom Brokaw or the Katie Couric interview, play like echoes of times when media was simpler and easier to trust, while the portrayal of Scruggs and the AJC staff, the horde of reporters, or even a recast Bryant Gumbel (Garon Grigsby) using ‘gotcha journalism’, play like personal indictments on these institutions and practices. The muted, reserved way that the film qualifies as a period film is different than normal... period specific dress, haircuts, vehicles and the like are around, but the way that reflections on the era are used narratively, like the Michael Johnson scene, play much stronger. The sensationalist hunger of the media and their search for the next big story is also referenced, with nods to TImothy McVey, OJ Simpson and Ted Kaczynski all popping up. The film also manages to find ways to present humor, with most of it being found in the funny moments that manage to pop up in the extreme moments of life.
Paul Walter Hauser finds a curious rhythm that mostly involves him embodying the news media portrayal and public perception of Jewell, with brief but powerful outbursts of emotion that reveal fear in a shell-shocked man. Kathy Bates embodies all of the motherly support that can be captured and displayed on film, with a handful of powerfully emotional moments of her own that resonate long after the film is done. Sam Rockwell’s natural charm and offbeat nature work well in his portrayal of an anti-establishment attorney, with him showing an ability to focus force both vocally and with intense staredowns... Nina Arianda works well in tandem with Rockwell, providing a strong and supportive sense of guidance that pushes Rockwell’s character in the right direction. Olivia Wilde finds a unique balance of her own as a comedicaly straight antagonist, posturing in extreme ways while bolstering the choices with a matter of fact nature, all the while keeping a touch of humanity in the chamber for the resolution-based moments. Jon Hamm puts another notch on the ‘charming villain’ belt, somehow managing to be an intimidating good cop in comparison to Ian Gomez and his standard look and operation as an FBI agent. Appearances by Niko Nicotera, Mike Pniewski, Dylan Kussman, Wayne Duvall, Garon Grigsby and Charles Green round out the film.
Clint Eastwood continues to rack up a strong directoral catalog, and Richard Jewell stands as evidence of this. The potential director in me noticed a couple of mistakes that modern directors probably would have erased in the post, but these mistakes just further enforce the old school aesthetic that Eastwood uses. With the film itself being an echo of a recently bygone era, all of this works to Eastwood’s benefit... this one won’t be cracking my top ten, but it is certainly worth seeing.

ONE BOOK AWAY: THE SALVATION OF MICHAEL CLEERE
ONE BOOK AWAY: THE SALVATION OF MICHAEL CLEERE
I have learned myriad lessons from my perch as an African-American studies professor enjoying the privilege of working with American youth. Probably the most encouraging of all of these lessons has been that most young people are what could be termed “one book away” from transforming a directionless life into “a life worth living.” I, along with thousands of other educators, fervently believe…

We remember.
16 years ago, my church held an impromptu service in the wake of 9/11. There was only a preliminary list of the people killed. Everybody drew little sheets of paper with a name on it from a basket, and during the prayer we each read the name we held aloud at the same time. The name I got was Stephen Dimino. I make a point to say his name out loud several times a day every 9/11.
I put a list of their names under the cut. You will be scrolling for a long time. I encourage everyone to pick out a name, write it down and say it in whatever form you communicate best be it AAC, sign language, or even keeping a photo of that person with their name if you can find a photo of them.
Some say a person’s memory stays alive as long as their name is still read or spoken. I can’t bring back the people who died that awful day, but I can use this platform to put their names out there so their memory stays alive.

What We’re Looking Forward To From CES 2019
Like its host city, the CES trade show largely deals in illusion. Most of the flashy stuff being shown in Las Vegas this week is months or years away from making your life better—if it comes out at all. Here at Wirecutter, we know there’s no way we can walk off the convention-center floor ready to make a new pick (we’ve got to get stuff home to test, of course), but the things we see and learn at the show can help us make picks in the year to come.
For us, CES is a time to talk to engineers and manufacturers about the new technologies they’re excited about for 2019, and to ask them the right questions so that we can pass their expertise on to you.
We’ve always tried to take a realist’s approach to CES. Once our team is back home, we’ll fully consider everything we’ve seen, and we’ll test what we can—and hopefully we’ll have some new picks to tell you about in our guides. But for now, here are the things we’re most looking forward to.

Dell New XPS 13, available now, $1,190
Photo: Dell
Since June 2015, in our reviews, the Dell XPS 13 has beaten out competing Windows ultrabooks thanks to its size, battery life, and powerful performance. Its nearly four-year-old design has remained our favorite even as other ultrabooks have finally begun to catch up. At this year’s CES, Dell revealed that it has finally corrected the XPS 13’s greatest flaw: its awkwardly placed webcam, which sat on the leftmost edge of the bottom bezel and gave a great view into your nostrils. On the Dell New XPS 13, available now, Dell has shrunk the webcam and pushed it to the center of the laptop’s top bezel. (Tossing that crappy camera should spark joy, as Marie Kondo might say.)
The New XPS 13 comes with two Thunderbolt 3 ports, one USB-C 3.1 port, a microSD card reader, and a headphone jack. For the past two years, we’ve continued to prefer the XPS 13 model with legacy ports, but this looks like the year we might recommend the USB-C model to most people. The new camera does mean you’ll no longer be able to log in using just your face, but we think this new design is worth the trade-off, and you’ll still have the optional fingerprint reader for easy logins. The laptop felt comfortable to type on in our brief demo, but we’ll reserve judgment on the New XPS 13’s keyboard, trackpad, and battery life until we get it in for testing.

A kitchen-friendly smart display
KitchenAid Smart Display, spring or summer 2019, $200 to $300
Photo: Grant Clauser
The Google Home Hub is easily my favorite Google Assistant device, especially for use in the kitchen, but if you squirt it with the sink hose or spill your soup-in-progress on it, you’ll probably kill it. KitchenAid is claiming to fix that problem with its version, the KitchenAid Smart Display. The Smart Display is IPX5 rated, so you don’t need to worry about getting messy around it, which is great because smart displays are perfect cooking helpers. As with all Google Assistant displays, including the Lenovo and JBL models, you can ask this one for recipes and let its videos and instructions walk you through preparing your food—as well as play music while you’re making a mess, and control your connected smart-home devices—all with your voice, without having to wash your hands. This model adds support for Yummly, KitchenAid’s own database of recipes, but you can also select meals from other sites. The display is 10 inches, so it’s 3 inches bigger than that of the Home Hub but the same as the larger Lenovo display. It also includes a built-in camera for video calls (and a lens off-switch), which the Google version lacks. The extra size matters when you’re watching cooking videos or reading recipe ingredients. The price hasn’t been finalized, but KitchenAid told us that the Smart Display would be between $200 and $300 at release later this year.

Two 2019 trends for headphones
Jabra Elite 85h, April 2019, $300
Cleer Ally Plus, June 2019, $200
Photo: Jabra
Based on the conversations I’ve had at CES this year, I’m expecting two big improvements for headphones in 2019. Active noise-cancelling headphones will get cheaper overall, and we’ll see a vast improvement in battery life. I’ve been told that new chips are able to conserve energy better, so headphones can either work longer or do more with the same-size batteries.
One example I saw already utilizing this new tech was the Jabra Elite 85h, which has active noise cancelling and claims a 32-hour battery life but also features the same “always listening” wake-word-based tech as an Amazon Echo speaker, a Google Home Hub, or an iPhone, so you don’t need to push a button to pull up your digital assistant. Instead, you can just say “Alexa” or “Assistant.” The noise cancelling was pretty impressive when I tried the pair at CES, but we’ll need to test the headphones more before making a verdict. The Jabra Elite 85h is due in April and will cost $300.
Photo: Lauren Dragan
Another company taking advantage of the chip tech was Cleer, which will have true wireless earbuds with active noise cancellation and a whopping 10-hour battery life between charges plus 20 more hours in the charge case. And no, the earbuds aren’t massive, either. (Of course, we’ll have to test those battery-life claims ourselves.) Cleer’s Ally Plus headphones will be IPX5 rated and will cost $200 when they become available in June.
Additionally, one of the chip manufacturers, Qualcomm, is supplying a chipset to headphone makers with active noise cancelling ready to go, making it easier and less expensive than ever for these companies to add ANC to their gear. This new tech will likely cause an overall drop in prices as other headphone companies try to compete. But just because the new Qualcomm chip makes ANC easy to install doesn’t mean these inexpensive ANC earbuds will be optimized or tuned. So in addition to seeing some great pairs of headphones, I fear we’re also in for a ton of crappy new stuff too. Good or bad, we’ll give them a listen, and we’ll keep you posted on what’s worth your time.

One gaming monitor for all
G-Sync on FreeSync monitors, January 2019
Photo: Asus
When we published our first gaming-monitor guide last spring, we chose to offer two top picks: a G-Sync monitor for those using an Nvidia graphics card and a FreeSync monitor for those using an AMD graphics card. G-Sync costs more, while FreeSync often gets tossed in as a free feature even on non-gaming monitors. For the past several years, shopping for a gaming monitor has come with the annoying choice between these two competing adaptive-sync technologies—a feature that helps make games look smoother. Because of these proprietary technologies, it’s hard to recommend spending the large amount of cash on a gaming monitor unless you know you’ll be using the same GPU for a long time.
But later this month, Nvidia will release a driver update that adds G-Sync to 12 FreeSync gaming monitors, making modern Nvidia graphics cards compatible with both technologies. Even if a monitor isn’t yet certified with G-Sync (such as our current FreeSync pick, the Asus MG279Q), you will be able to try the G-Sync support yourself on any FreeSync monitor by enabling the adaptive sync manually. Hopefully, this move on Nvidia’s part will lead to more monitors that support both sync technologies for a lower price, and will make it easier for us to name a single FreeSync monitor recommendation for most gamers.

Mesh network gets a sequel for Wi-Fi 6
Netgear Orbi RBK 152, second half of 2019, price TBD
Photo: Netgear
We’ve been recommending a mesh Wi-Fi network for the past few years, but at CES 2019 we saw a new wrinkle in the networking fabric: Wi-Fi 6. The Netgear Orbi RBK 152 adds Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) to the company’s multi-node mesh-networking kit.
Similar to the Netgear Orbi RBK50 kit we currently recommend, the Orbi kit with a Wi-Fi 6 router and satellite has a new look: vertically oriented white oval cylinders with tuxedo-style black and blue stripes around their perimeters.
Netgear brought only inactive mockups to show at CES, but in the second half of this year the Orbi kit with Wi-Fi 6 will feature a dedicated 802.11ax backchannel between the router and any satellites, as well as full 2.4 GHz/5 GHz Wi-Fi compatibility (802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax) to clients. This compatibility is important because you’ll still need to keep your Wi-Fi water monitor online while streaming video to your 4K TV and 2019-model 802.11ax laptop. Enhancements such as 1024 QAM with a 4×4 Wi-Fi backhaul mean that you should be able to get most, if not all, the Gigabit Internet throughput you’re paying for, not just at the router.
Mesh helps with Wi-Fi problem spots such as that comfy seat in the den where you have trouble staying connected to the router installed on the other side of the house. Interfering Wi-Fi signals from your neighbors compound the problem. Replacing an existing standalone router with a mesh-networking kit makes sense for someone in this situation.
If I were planning to replace a standalone router with a mesh network, I’d seriously consider waiting for the Netgear Orbi with Wi-Fi 6—it’ll work great now, and you’ll be ready for 802.11ax laptops, phones, and other devices in the future.

Smart Fitness Tips to Manage Diabetes
Stay motivated--and control diabetes--with these exercise strategies.
FITNESS TIPS FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES
OK, so you know exercise can do wonders to help prevent or control type 2 diabetes, but the real trick is finding an exercise plan you can maintain. First, focus on all the great benefits: Regular workouts not only help prevent insulin resistance and lower blood sugar levels, they can also improve your cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and even reduce stress. Sold? Try these 6 ways to get moving, stay motivated, and manage your diabetes better than ever.
SET REALISTIC FITNESS GOALS
Make exercise a habit by setting both short- and long-term fitness goals. Sharecare fitness expert Michelle Cleere, PhD, says short-term goals are the most important because they help build confidence and act as stepping stones to longer-term fitness goals while controlling blood sugar. If you want to lose 20 pounds in 6 months, for example, your short-term goal might be to lose 2 pounds a month along with some other measurable goals, such as walking every day and doing resistance training with weights twice a week.
MAKE A DATE WITH EXERCISE
One of the best ways to make exercise part of your routine to manage diabetes is to schedule it. That's right: Make physical activity a top priority, like an important meeting with the boss. (You can even do double duty and ask your boss to walk while you meet.) If something always comes up, do a brisk 15-minute workout in the morning, such as jumping rope or taking a fast walk around the neighborhood. When you can't do your normal workout routine, add exercise breaks to your daily calendar.
RECRUIT A WORKOUT PARTNER
Friends with exercise benefits can make your routine more fun and help you stay on a regular workout schedule. Fitness partners can also benefit from mutual support and some friendly competition. Look for someone who shares and supports your fitness goals. Your fitness buddy can be a spouse, neighbor, coworker, or friend from the gym. No buddy to exercise with? Even a virtual exercise partner -- say, a digital coach -- may boost your output by 24%. And don't underestimate the power of social networking sites to recruit faraway pals who share your goals or at least offer support and hold you accountable.
DO MINI WORKOUTS
The toughest thing about exercise often isn't doing it. It's finding time to do it. If you can't swing a 30-minute walk every day, plus about 30 minutes a week of strength training, no worries! Splitting your physical activity into 10-minute mini workouts throughout the day can be a smart strategy to manage (or even prevent) type 2 diabetes. Just be sure to do a total of at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. For starters, walk wherever you can and -- unless your doctor says otherwise -- always take the stairs.
RACK STEPS WITH A PEDOMETER
Do you know how many steps you walk each day? If not, now is a great time to get a pedometer. It's sure to motivate you to walk more to control your blood sugar level. No matter how much you're walking now, just strapping on a pedometer is enough to encourage you to add another 2,000 steps per day, according to one study. That's an extra mile! Aim to cover 10,000 steps a day for the most benefit. (RealAge cofounder Michael F. Roizen, MD, doesn't go to bed without logging his 10,000 steps a day.) Pick a pedometer model with an easy-to-read display, a sturdy clip, and a loop-on "leash" so you don't lose it.
MAKE FITNESS FUN
Workouts don't have to feel like work to help control diabetes. Try skating, a Zumba class, salsa dance lessons, or all three to spice up your workouts and use your muscles in new, fun ways. Think back to activities you loved as a kid. Were you a double-dutch champ? Buy a jump rope and start skipping. If you have kids, get them exercising, too, by teaching them to hula hoop. Or, play fetch with your dog at a park, or just set up a Wii Fit system and choose your workout (or play date!).

Coastal Carolina joins FBS with the most interesting coach in college football
2017’s 130-team preview series begins by welcoming the Chanticleers to the party.
"My story is 10 times better than the Rudy story," Moglia says. "Rudy's a tough kid in the city, Chicago kid that wanted to go to Notre Dame. That's it."
In 1983, Joe Yukica's Dartmouth Big Green went 4-5-1, playing pretty good defense but scoring 17 or fewer in each loss. To that point, Yukica had gone 23-11-1 in Ivy League play over his five years in Hanover. But the trend was growing negative.
In 1984, with a new defensive coordinator, the Big Green fell to 2-7, allowing 38 points per game over the first four games and never recovering. In 1985, following another two-win campaign, Yukica was fired ... and then unfired. He sued to force the school to uphold his contract, which expired after 1986, and he somehow won. He won three games in 1986 and retired on his own terms.
That Yukica was able to overrule his own firing was the most noteworthy thing about his tenure. He never recovered from losing his defensive coordinator following the 1983 season.
That DC was a 34-year-old named Joe Moglia. He had six years of coordinator experience, but he pursued a different calling, one that actually paid a little bit. He went to work for Merrill Lynch and within a couple of decades became CEO of what is now TD Ameritrade. And then he went back to his football roots.
In 2008, Moglia decided he wasn't done with coaching after all. He retired as CEO and became an unpaid assistant for Bo Pelini. As one does.
Moglia volunteered at Nebraska, became head coach of the UFL's Omaha Nighthawks for a year, then took on the head coaching job at Coastal Carolina.
Moglia has gone from the Ivy League to Wall Street to Nebraska to the outskirts of Myrtle Beach.
He has been the subject of profile pieces from the New York Times, Sports Illustrated, and Grantland, to name a few. If there's one thing he knows, it's taking an uncertain leap. And now his employer will do the same.
It’s rather on-brand for Moglia to oversee Coastal’s leap to FBS. The school didn’t have a football program until 2003, when Moglia was overseeing Ameritrade acquisitions. He is just the second coach in program history, and he didn’t waste a moment proving himself as a program leader.
The Chanticleers improved from 7-4 to 8-3 in 2012, his first season. Since then, they’ve averaged an 11-2 record and twice finished in the FCS top 10. In both 2013 and 2014, they reached the FCS quarterfinals but had the misfortune of drawing North Dakota State. In 2014, they nearly beat the Bison.
So now it’s Sun Belt time. It’s easy for a program to mistime its jump to FBS — you have to call your shot at least a couple of years out, meaning you have time to fall off pace or make a bad hire. UMass and Western Kentucky were successful FCS programs but hit FBS with a dull thud. WKU rebounded, but it took a few years. UMass is still looking for traction.
Others have done just fine. New conference mates Georgia Southern and Appalachian State have been in FBS for six combined seasons and won at least nine games in four of them. Old Dominion and South Alabama were bowling by their third seasons in FBS.
At this point, UMass is an outlier. If you are doing well in FCS when you make the jump, odds are pretty good that you’ll find FBS to your liking.
And Coastal Carolina was doing quite well.
2016 in review
CCU wasn't eligible for the FCS playoffs in 2016 due to transition rules, but the Chanticleers were as solid as ever. They went 10-2, losing only to excellent Jacksonville State and Charleston Southern teams by a combined two points.
On the road against JSU, four different Chanticleers threw passes as Coastal fell victim to quarterback injuries. But Coastal still led 26-20 until JSU scored with 6:44 left.
Against Charleston Southern, the offense wasn’t an issue: The Chanticleers averaged 7.4 yards per play and raced ahead 21-7 after one quarter. After falling behind at halftime, they took a 35-30 lead heading into the fourth. After CSU took the lead back, CCU’s Ryan Granger forced overtime with a 35-yard field goal. The teams traded scores, but after Kenneth Daniels got the ‘Cleers to within 59-58 with a touchdown in the second overtime, Granger’s PAT attempt was blocked. CSU survived.
Average score of Coastal’s other 10 games: CCU 36, Opponent 15.
The Chanticleer offense has averaged at least 34 per game in every year of Moglia’s tenure, and the defense has come around over the last three years. CCU allowed a Moglia-low 5.1 yards per play in 2016, good enough to offset some quarterback issues.
Offense
Okay, let’s back up. “Some quarterback issues” doesn’t really cut it.
I hate to use my one allotted “exploding Spinal Tap drummers” reference this early in the preview series, but it might not ever be more applicable.
Three-star QB-of-the-future Chance Thrasher was lost with a shoulder injury in fall camp.
Sophomore Josh Stilley took over and got hurt in Week 3 against Jacksonville State. Freshman Avery McCall came in and also got hurt. He redshirted.
Junior and career backup Tyler Keane made it 105 passes before injuring his ankle.
Freshmen Austin Bradley and Ryan Lee took over. Bradley couldn’t really run, and Lee couldn’t really pass — he threw three passes while rushing 73 times. He will play receiver in 2017.
You can forgive the offense for slumping to 37 points per game and 5.8 yards per play.
Coordinator Dave Patenaude’s plans to move to more of a pass-first attack went out the window early in the cavalcade of QB injuries. Instead, Coastal leaned heavily (and with great effect) on the run. A foursome of backs — De’Angelo Henderson, Kenneth Daniels, Osharmar Abercrombie, and Jah-Maine Martin — averaged 32 carries and 187 yards per game. Lee provided a jolt as well.
Patenaude’s improv act was good enough to earn him a promotion. He took the Temple coordinator job. In his place, Moglia called in a ringer: Jamey Chadwell, Charleston Southern's head coach. Chadwell won 35 games in Charleston and reached the FCS playoffs twice in four years, but the draw of the FBS leap was strong.
Former BC back Marcus Outlow joins the CCU backfield in 2107.
Chadwell’s 2016 offense at CSU averaged 44 carries and only 17 passes per game. The Buccaneers were prolific, but it will be interesting to see what Chadwell attempts with his two leading rushers and basically 3.5 offensive line starters gone.
Something else interesting to watch: the redshirts.
Per the 247Sports Composite, Moglia’s 2016 recruiting class featured five three-star recruits and three high-twos. Not bad for a startup. Five of those play on offense, and four redshirted: McCall (involuntarily), running back Victor Greene, and receivers Larry Collins Jr. and Jay King II.
These players and Boston College transfer Marcus Outlow could give the Chanticleers a nice boost of athleticism in the skill positions. Plus, returnees like Abercrombie and Martin (combined: 5.6 yards per carry) and receiver Chris Jones (22 catches, 323 yards) could offset the loss of two leading rushers and two of three leading wideouts.
Find the right quarterback — and goodness knows they come in all shapes, sizes, and styles, from the pro-style Thrasher to the dual-threat McCall to Syracuse transfer Austin Wilson — and you might be able to implement whatever style you want.
At least, you can if you figure things out up front. Coastal has FBS-caliber size on the line; four returnees with starting experience (26 career starts) average 6’4, 300 pounds. But depth and experience were both depleted by graduation.
If 6’4, 305-pound JUCO transfer Kenneth Sims is a keeper, and if a three-star freshman or two are ready to stick in the rotation, maybe the line will be alright. But Coastal finished 2016 with 136 career starts and begins 2017 with 26. That’s quite a drop-off.
Defense
Moglia has basically put together an FCS all-star team on his coaching staff. Chadwell's bona fides are impressive, and a year ago Moglia named Mickey Matthews, head coach of James Madison's 2004 national title team, his defensive coordinator. Matthews led JMU for 15 years and won an FCS national title as Marshall's defensive coordinator in 1992 as well.
In Matthews' first season, the Chanticleers allowed 0.7 fewer yards per play (from 5.8 in 2015 to 5.1) and picked off 15 more passes than the year before. Their 19.2 percent havoc rate would have ranked 14th in the country at the FBS level. And a few of the reasons for this successful aggression return in 2017.
A few don’t, of course. Linebacker Alex Scearce (13.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks, 12 passes defensed) was Mr. Everything but ran out of eligibility. So did four of the top five tacklers in the secondary — and as we’ve seen, turnover in the secondary can be deadly for a defense.
Still, there’s a decent base of experience. Injury and shuffling led to nine defensive backs recording at least 10 tackles; five return, and all five are either juniors or seniors, including Kent State transfer Eric Church.
There are also some play-makers. Ends Marcus Williamson and Myles White combined for 15.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks in 2016, middle linebacker Shane Johnson combined 5.5 non-sack TFLs with three passes defensed, and junior Anthony Chesley (2.5 TFLs, two interceptions, eight breakups) immediately becomes one of the Sun Belt’s better cornerbacks.
Plus, like the offense, the defense could get an athleticism boost from redshirts and new signees: 2016 signees Silas Kelly (linebacker), Darrell Malone Jr. (cornerback), and Calvin Smith (safety) were all mid- to high-two-star recruits, and 2017 signees Tay Pringle (tackle), Michael Makins (linebacker), and Cantorian Weems (defensive back) were three-star guys.
Special Teams
It’s a mixed bag. Punter Evan Rabon’s kicks aren’t particularly long, but they are high and mostly unreturnable. And while sophomore return man Ky’Jon Tyler is all-or-nothing, the alls are impressive: He returned 12 kickoffs and punts in 2016, and two went for touchdowns.
Plus, while Masamitsu Ishibashi almost never gets the ball in the end zone on kickoffs, opponents averaged under 19 yards per return last year. There is value in high kicks, and CCU kicks ‘em high.
If Granger hadn’t run out of eligibility, this would be one of the league’s better special teams units.

For a newbie, Coastal gets some respect from S&P+. And really, that shouldn’t be much of a surprise. The Chanticleers ranked 101st in Sagarin last year. The next three FBS teams above them: NIU, Ohio, and UTSA, two bowl teams and a team that finished 5-7 in the MAC. The next three FBS teams below them: Arizona, Hawaii, and Miami (Ohio), two bowl teams and a Pac-12 program.
Coastal is projected 114th in S&P+, and it would be higher if not for the turnover in the secondary and the receiving corps. That results in quite a few tossups — CCU has between a 45 and 56 percent chance of winning in five games. Find a quarterback and establish a run game, and the odds of bowling in Year 1 are strong.
Moglia really is the perfect coach to lead a charge into FBS. It took him virtually no time to build an FCS stalwart, and his odd-as-hell résumé will help to generate a little bit of extra attention for CCU. And his Chanticleers aren’t that many ifs away from hitting the ground running at a pretty high speed.
