  Mexico's Multilateral Vision at the UN Assembly

During the High-Level Week of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, Mexico emerged as a pivotal player in global multilateral relations. Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, emphasizes Mexico's role as a proponent of a new era of cooperation aimed at enhancing well-being and global development. Central to this vision is the pressing need to reform the international financial architecture.  

Strengthening Multilateralism

Mexico is gearing up with enthusiasm to actively participate in COP28 and the TPAN conference, responding proactively to various global calls for action. Secretary Bárcena Ibarra passionately stresses the significance of bolstering multilateralism, expressing genuine concern about the notable absence of certain countries, including some permanent members of the Security Council, at this crucial gathering. Nevertheless, Mexico's unwavering commitment to the success of multilateral efforts remains steadfast.  

Progress Towards 2030 Agenda

In a press conference held at the UN headquarters in New York City, the Mexican Foreign Minister elaborated on Mexico's significant strides in fulfilling the 2030 Agenda and addressed the global challenges shaping the future. Notably, these achievements include the uplifting of 5 million people out of poverty through strategic investments in infrastructure, social programs, and policies such as minimum wage increases. As a result, Mexico has achieved a commendable 69% compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals, according to a United Nations report.

International Collaborations

Mexico's active role extends to international collaborations, such as MIKTA, a group comprising Mexico, Indonesia, Korea, Turkey, and Australia, working together to address global challenges. Secretary Bárcena Ibarra's representation of MIKTA at the SDG Summit acknowledges the global setback in the 2030 Agenda due to financing gaps.  

Global Initiatives and Challenges

The Mexican Foreign Minister also discussed various global initiatives and challenges: - Nuclear Risks: Mexico's stance on the Ukraine-Russia conflict and its commitment to peaceful solutions. - Synthetic Drugs: Mexico's efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking and illegal weapons entering the country. - Global Gateway: Collaboration with the European Union to support investments and the 2030 Agenda. - Feminist Foreign Policy: A commitment to strengthen gender equality in foreign affairs. - Climate Adaptation and Natural Disasters Fund: A seed fund with contributions from several countries and international organizations. - Environmental Advocacy: Pushing for technology and renewable energy access in developing countries, coupled with financing for developed nations. - Migration Policies: A focus on addressing structural causes of migration and a humanitarian approach.  

Broad Engagement

Mexico's active engagement extended to multiple meetings and dialogues, including those on Universal Health Coverage, the Future Summit, digital divide challenges, inequality, and the imperative need for UN reform.
