Since inception in 1971, it was clear that the R107 series of convertibles was less the exhilarating “super leicht”—super light— performance machine the original SL was and more a beautifully engineered luxury coupe. Even the V-8 models were relatively underpowered, fitted exclusively with automatic transmissions, and rode upon a compliant suspension that emphasized luxurious cruising. In this regard, the independent tuning firm AMG, based in Affalterbach, Germany, saw a massive business opportunity.For a privileged clientele with unbounded checkbooks, AMG—which remained independent until Mercedes-Benz acquired a 50-percent stake in 1999 and then fully subsumed it in 2005—would entirely transform the SL into a true sports roadster with greatly improved power, handling, aerodynamics, and a full suite of attention-grabbing cosmetic accoutrements. Each car specified by an AMG customer was bespoke, replete with à-la-carte options offered from the company’s wide-ranging catalogue.

This 500 SL is the first of eight examples equipped with a five-speed manual transmission reportedly built by AMG for North American customers between 1982 and 1987.

A pair of ported and polished cylinder heads, which house solid mechanical intake valve lifters, and a set of AMG camshafts are the pièces de résistances among its desirable AMG-engineered performance upgrades. This top-end power kit is complemented by a modified air-intake assembly, and custom exhaust system which altogether help this 5.0-liter engine produce a conservatively rated 276 horsepower and achieve a top speed above 155 mph. Considering that the most powerful SL available to a US buyer in 1982 used a 3.8-liter V-8 that produced a mere 204 horsepower and had a top speed of 133 mph, this SL 500 AMG 5.0 is truly a mechanical marvel by comparison.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission from Getrag and a limited-slip differential, which sits upon a unique 3.46:1 rear axle. Close inspection reveals that AMG technicians cleverly repurposed the car’s original bellhousing to unite the Getrag transmission with the engine. A full “Bilstein for AMG” suspension and color-matched 16-inch BBS alloy wheels wrapped in Kumho tires provide more agile handling dynamics and a pleasingly aggressive stance.

The interior is a rather subtle affair by AMG standards, though a handsome pair of Recaro Ideal seats wearing Palomino leather helps convey the high-performance potential. The shift boot and steering wheel have been similarly upholstered, uniting a pleasant aesthetic highlighted by rich zebrano wood trim and AMG’s signature 300-km/h speedometer.

Mercedes-Benz’s Top 10 Movie Cameos, Ranked from Worst to Best

Hollywood and Mercedes-Benz vehicles seem like a match made in celluloid heaven, and not surprisingly, three-pointed stars have been featured in dozens of films for well over six decades. Believe it or not, a Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Gullwing snagged a cameo role way back in the 1958 horror flick The Screaming Skull. Since that role, Mercedes-Benz vehicles have appeared in a ton of movies, some highlights of which we’ve compiled for you here. We also rated them from one to four Mercedes-Benz stars based on which ones were used best in their respective films, (four being the best) and we found a few choice scene clips for your viewing pleasure.

Dude, Where’s My Car? (2000)

1999 Mercedes-Benz SL 500 (R129) 1.5 stars

Where’s my car, dude? Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott star as a couple of hayseeds on an epic quest to find their car—a beater Renault Le Car. It’s a seriously stupid and sometimes hysterically funny movie, but the duo somehow manages to drive around in a black Mercedes SL500 convertible in their adventures, and even gross out Fabio and his girlfriend at a stoplight game of chicken. Sweet!

Liar Liar (1997)

1996 Mercedes-Benz SL 500 (R129) 2 stars

Funnyman Jim Carrey plays Fletcher Reede, a lawyer having a really bad day in Liar Liar where he drives a Mercedes-Benz SL 500 drop-top. The pathologically dishonset lawyer “takes it up the tailpipe” in a scene where he retrieves his champagne painted Mercedes from the impound only to discover a gnarly foot-long scratch on the passenger side door. Hate when that happens. Carrey yells at the indifferent tow guy to no avail.

The Transporter (2002)

1991 Mercedes-Benz SEL (W140) 2.5 stars

Jason Statham stars in The Transporter, a car-movie classic, as Frank Martin, an ex-Special Forces mercenary driver. At the beginning of the flick, he hot-wires a W140-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class to escape a gunfight, crashes it through a gate, and inadvertently kidnaps a crime lord’s daughter to save the day. He doesn’t stay a Mercedes man for long, though—Statham’s character drives Audis in the movie’s two action-packed sequels.

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Convertible (W111) 3 stars

A thirtysomething Renee Zellweger as Bridget Jones gets picked up by her new boyfriend, played by Hugh Grant, who drives a blue 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE convertible. Jones loses her scarf in the wind as the couple drives topless on their weekend holiday, and she later arrives at their lodging with a wild new blown-out doo. [Insert drum beat here.] It’s a silly movie but it features a really sweet ride, too.

Casino (1995)

1975 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL (R107) 3 stars

Sharon Stone’s character Ginger rams a 450 SL into gangster Sam Rothstein’s (Robert De Niro’s) car in Martin Scorsese’s now-classic 1995 film Casino, which is (of course) set in Las Vegas. Stone also drives the Mercedes over the lawn and later backs into the side of a Cadillac before speeding away. Kids, please don’t try this at home.

The Hangover (2009)

1965 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet (W111) 3 stars

In the brah-medy The Hangover, the main characters’ borrowed ride for a road trip to a Vegas bachelor party is, what else, a beautiful 1965 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet. Like the movie’s stars, during the film the car gets trashed in Sin City, where it meets a sad fate that includes a tiger attack, a T-bone impact with a Cadillac Escalade, and lots and lots of dust. Five cars were used during the filming, and two of them reportedly were chopped-up coupes. Thankfully, two of the convertibles survived the production and you can see one of them above as the “wolf pack” cruises towards the Las Vegas Strip.

American Gigolo (1980)

Richard Gere, as the lead in American Gigolo, drives a mean black Mercedes Benz 450 SL convertible over the credits of director Paul Schrader’s crime drama. Probably the best part of the movie is this scene, where Blondie sings Call Me on the soundtrack and Gere cruises on the Pacific Coast Highway in the sleek drop-top. The film also stars actress/model Lauren Hutton, but the car is really the star for us.

The Rookie (1990)

The Rookie is a buddy cop flick in which a veteran detective played by Clint Eastwood teams up with a rookie played by Charlie Sheen. The mismatched pair are investigating an exotic car theft ring in Los Angeles and snag a Mercedes 500SL convertible before driving it out of a giant window, over an explosion, and crashing through a warehouse skylight. “Engineered like no other car,” Eastwood’s character quips, as he reminds his partner to fasten his seatbelt.

A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)

2006 Mercedes-AMG G55 (W463) 4 stars

Bruce Willis reprises his role cynical New York City super cop John McClane in A Good Day to Die Hard, engaging in another series of implausible world-saving acts while chasing a very bad guy. On the topic of Benzes, McClane crashes a stolen G55 AMG off a bridge and lands on top of a transporter truck full of Porsches. Naturally, Willis drives over them in his mini-Merc tank, and then crushes dozens of car roofs during rush hour traffic in pursuit of his estranged son through the streets of Moscow. It’s an incredibly unbelievable turn, even for the rugged G-wagen, but it is still fun and entertaining. The last and seemingly least popular Die Hard movie also featured several Mercedes-Benz G-Classes, Sprinter vans, and Unimogs being destroyed as well.

The thriller Ronin, directed by John Frankenheimer, features some of the best car chase scenes in cinema history. Robert De Niro stars, but actor Jean Reno steals the show, especially when he is behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL during a tire-squealing chase sequence. His copilot even manages to fire a rocket launcher from the car’s sunroof during the wild chase scene, in which the Mercedes joins an Audi S8, Peugeot 605, and a Citroen in an epic run-in with the baddies.

Clássicos: Mercedes-Benz R107, o carro mais longevo da história da marca

Popularizado pelos fabricantes de Detroit, os motores V8 tornaram-se obrigatórios para satisfazer o mercado norte-americano, ávido por carros velozes.

O desempenho foi uma diretriz importantíssima no desenvolvimento da terceira geração do Mercedes-Benz SL, também conhecida pela nomenclatura R107.

Denominado W113, o pacato SL “Pagoda” de segunda geração atravessou os anos 60 encantando seu público com o elegante desenho de Paul Bracq, tão harmonioso que mascarou as limitações técnicas dos enormes cupês W111 que lhe serviram de base.

Seus motores de seis cilindros e a controversa suspensão traseira por eixo oscilante já estavam obsoletos.

Apresentado oficialmente no autódromo de Hockenheim em 14 de abril de 1971, o 350 SL foi um dos últimos trabalhos do Friedrich Geiger à frente do departamento de estilo da casa de Stuttgart.

Sua personalidade inconfundível foi definida pelo designer Joseph Gallitzendörfer: faróis retangulares e lanternas avançando sobre os para-lamas formaram um desenho clássico, sóbrio e atemporal.

Como no antecessor Pagoda, havia duas capotas: uma rígida removível mais adequada a condições climáticas ruins e uma de lona para enfrentar chuvas repentinas.

A moldura do para-brisa era um tratado de segurança automotiva assinado pelo engenheiro Karl Wilfert: suportava o peso do veículo em um capotamento.

A primeira impressão do 350 SL era a de um automóvel rígido e sólido, com qualidade de construção acima da média.

O R107 foi desenvolvido em conjunto com o cupê C107 de quatro lugares, ambos baseados na plataforma do sedã médio W114.

O acerto da suspensão dianteira por braços sobrepostos e da traseira com braços semiarrastados ficou a cargo de Rudolf Uhlenhaut, engenheiro com grande experiência nas pistas.

Os freios a disco nas quatro rodas indicavam aptidão para conter o novo motor V8 M116 de 3,5 litros e 200 cv, alimentado pela injeção eletrônica Bosch D-Jetronic.

Pesando pouco mais de 1,5 tonelada, o conforto de rodagem do 350 SL era similar ao de um grã-turismo: um conversível feito para rodar por horas em alta velocidade.

Com câmbio automático, era ligeiramente mais rápido e veloz que o antigo Pagoda, indo de 0 a 100 km/h em 9,5 segundos e chegando aos 205 km/h.

O desempenho melhorava com o câmbio manual: 0 a 100 km/h em 8,5 segundos e máxima de 215 km/h.

Os americanos só conheceram o 350 SL em 1972, com estranhos faróis duplos do tipo sealed beam e o V8 M117 de 4,5 litros e potência reduzida para 190 cv em função das normas de emissões: ia de 0 a 100 km/h em 9,9 segundos com máxima de 202 km/h.

O V8 M117 deu origem ao 450 SL alemão de 225 cv, sempre com câmbio automático de três marchas e desempenho similar ao do 350 SL com câmbio manual.

O sucesso dos 350 SL/450 SL só não foi maior devido à crise energética de 1973, que forçou a Mercedes a lançar o 280 SL em 1974.

A novidade ficava por conta do motor M110 de seis cilindros, com 2,8 litros, duplo comando de válvulas no cabeçote, injeção mecânica Bosch K-Jetronic e 185 cv.

Continuava rápido: 0 a 100 km/h em 9,5 segundos e 205 km/h de máxima.

Os motores V8 ficaram maiores em 1980: o 350 SL foi substituído pelo 380 SL (3,8 litros e 218 cv) e o 450 SL deu lugar ao 500 SL (5 litros e 240 cv). Nesse mesmo ano, o 280 SL recebeu um câmbio manual de cinco marchas.

Em 1985, o 280 SL tornou-se 300 SL (3 litros e 190 cv), o 380 SL abriu espaço para o 420 SL (4,2 litros, 218 cv e mais torque) e o 560 SL (5,5 litros e 227 cv) tornou-se o topo de linha nos EUA, Japão e Austrália.

Em agosto de 1989, o último R107 (um 500 SL vermelho) deixou a linha de montagem na fábrica de Sindelfingen, totalizando 237.287 unidades produzidas em 18 anos.

Até hoje se mantém como o carro de passeio mais longevo da Mercedes: a quarta-geração do SL (R129) vendeu muito bem, mas permaneceu por apenas 12 anos no mercado.
