Cyornis kadayangensis Irham et al., 2022 (new species)
Tumblr media
(Type specimen of Cyornis kadayangensis, from Irham et al., 2022)
Meaning of name: kadayangensis = from Kadayang [Dayak village in the Meratus Mountains]
Suggested common name: Meratus jungle flycatcher
Age: Holocene (Meghalayan), extant
Where found: Forests of the Meratus Mountains, southeast Borneo, Indonesia
How much is known: At least ten collected specimens are held in museum collections.
Notes: Cyornis is a genus of Afro-Eurasian flycatchers in which males of most (but not all) species are primarily blue in color. C. kadayangensis is closely related to the Dayak blue flycatcher (C. montanus) of northern Borneo, but can be distinguished from it by coloration. Most notably, both male and female C. kadayangensis have a white underbelly, which is not found in C. montanus.
C. kadayangensis is common in the Meratus Mountains at altitudes of 500–1500 m. Given its restricted range, however, its describers suggest that it should be classified as Vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
